- Many people don't realize how large of a role the baseball itself plays in hitting. So today, we're comparing the exit velocity & distance of 4 different types of baseballs:
-Rawlings Official MLB Baseball
-Rawlings NCAA Baseball (it is widely believed that this ball was juiced in late 2022)
-Wilson NFHS A1010HS1 Baseball
-Champro Practice Baseball

Yes I am a HS varsity coach. The seams are definitely different, along with the core, and leather..not to mention they are sooo expensive but you can tell the second you hit one of those out of a pitching machine compared to the other standard cheap BP ball!!!!

I was playing D-2 ball in 2015 when the NCAA switched to a baseball with seems modeled after a pro ball. I personally can confirm from that point forward they flew MUCH further.
My men’s league just went to pro balls and they fly with that reduced wind drag

They just used normal MLB baseballs with the juiced bats. Hype fire, icon, and some of the gorilla era bats from the 90's.

We have some of those balls for our travel team. At 12U the kids kit 15’-30’ further.
How about for pitching. In the 90's we used Diamond balls in HS, Legion, and D1 (the 3 variations were very similar). They had higher tighter stitches that gave incredible grip and made them feel smaller than Rawlings balls. Anyone remember these? You could throw nasty at all levels w/ those balls, but many like myself couldn't throw nearly as well with Rawlings like the Cape Cod ball.
Now you guys just need to do this same test with the Japanese balls 🥲

Even if they did, it wouldn't be a fair comparison. Sitting around for 20+ years is probably going to affect the ball significantly
I got 2. One that hit me in the arm trying catch it, someone returned it to me after they showed me crying at the jumbotron and a 2nd from when Mark McLemore made the last out and came over and gave it to me
It probably wasn’t really the balls that caused the power surge during that era.

Sport check where im at mislabeled a box of the expensive balls and I have never pulled out my debit card so fast. Just the way the leather connects with the bat feels better
Kinda makes sense about the pro balls being formulated for the differential to really stand apart on the wood bats at a higher rate than the BBCOR bats. Awesome video as always, fellers!

For real. Test a lemon peel ball and a 1900s deadball vs modern. I have a link for both and from experience lemon peel balls may come off the bat softer but they float pretty far with little effort

FINALLY! do more of these but compare the most commonly used youth balls which is the wilson 1010s, diamond dol-A, and the Rawlings ROLB USSSA.

I always believed that we had a variety of juiced baseballs in the Majors since 1994. It was so obvious compared to seasons prior to 1994.

i want to see the difference between a baseball and a cricket ball. not only how its hit but i think a baseball pitcher would be able to make the cricket ball swing/curve more

THE PRO BALLS ARENT MUDDED!!! lol I know that’s probably hard to find. I’d think it would make a difference though! If you don’t know, EVERY major league baseball is covered in a special mud from the south. Reason for it is a pitcher slipped and 💀 a guy. So the special mud is for grip and control. ✌️
unless you use a robotic pitcher AND BATTER, you WON'T get consistent results
I recently started working alot with 14yr old nephew whose a freshman this year and will be trying out for his highschool team. We mostly been using juggs pitching machine balls with and without a machine and some 14u baseballs. I just ordered 4 dozen fsr100-p balls online to use for BP with my nephew. I am really interested in knowing how they will carry in comparison to the jugg dimple balls. A few guys I know that played said they always felt like they hit regular baseballs further than pitching machine balls but I'm not sure I agree..It has been years since I played baseballs. Right now though between the 14u bb and the jugg pmb I feel like it's not even a comparison when it comes to distance. I sent a few jugg balls into orbit because they have so much bounce. We do hit alot more of the dimple balls because we have 50 of them and only 5 baseballs but I'm curious to see how the college bb compare. I searched online but I can't seem to find anything that confirms or denys which will fly further. Maybe a video idea you guys would like to explore?

You forgot one thing though…. You compared apples to oranges as the HS and College balls are meant to be hit with bbcor balls while pro are meant to be hit with wood. Looking at that the MLB is not the max, it’s NCAA at max and on average MLB and N AA were equal. Sooooo 🤷🏻♂️

Not valid because, you always knew which ball you were swinging at, which could have subconsciously affected your swing. Try it with unmarked balls which look identical. Also, were all of them stored under identical conditions?

I wonder if it's a case like in slowpitch, where the USA bats hit the softer balls a little better. The BBCOR bat hit the NCAA ball within 1 MPH of the MLB ball, but the wood bat was well above the NCAA ball with the MLB ball
stupid idea: try making your own wood bat. just grab some wood from home depot, shape it into a bat and swing it.
Do a comparison with batted ball velo off a progression of lower to higher pitched mph
Have you tried the Baden Perfection or the Diamond NFHS HS balls? That’s what we have to use in Texas.
Dye some of the other balls yellow, see if Hittrax (which is known to nuzzle donkey nuts) tracks it differently.

Try using a hype fire with mlb balls and that slow pitch softball bat to get your max exit velocity
So basically, the standard should be the high school ball, and college and mlb are getting a boost. Doesn't seem right.

I coached my son from 9u to 12u, so like most Dad’s that coached I have buckets of balls that I have had over the years. Got to get some college balls!!
