I have undertaken the honor of organizing 30 years of untouched music for the Lake Country Symphonic Band in Mineola, TX. With no budget and pieces in manilla envelopes, I am working with what I have. I am trading out file cabinets that will not fit the envelopes for lateral files that allow everything to be neatly out of sight. Before, we had 17 plastic tubs. Multiple cardboard boxes. And a few miscellaneous stacks. I am trying to use Excell Spreadsheet for my database, but it is short on search options. I have organized as to genre with each category getting up to 200 storage spaces. HELP! Kathy

My first season was last season in seventh grade (our school is small so the marching band is actually 8-12 grade with selected seventh graders) and I can agree band camp is probably the hardest part about the season but it’s one of the most fun. Like half way through our last week of band camp our towns fire department came and hosed literally everyone off it was so fun.

My audition is in 2 days. I was the feature soloist in this years show. I'll be a junior next year. I was also the only person of my class to make our schools top bands as a freshman. I also was in all state. Our current DM is graduating and our BD asked me to audition for drum major and thinks I would be a great leader and DM. Do you think I'll get it? Ive never conducted before

Why would anyone ever want to do this job? This guy only put half the stuff band directors do on here. Hours of score study, lesson planning, dealing with student misbehavior, hostile parents. Having to learn evey instrument to a more than proficient level. Practicing your own instrument. Practicing piano. Memorizing fingerings and pedagogy for every instrument. Repairing instruments. Writing marching band shows. Working summers while other teachers are off. A lot of these people burn out and there is a high divorce rate among band directors. Unless youre superman or superwoman, its a near impossible job. I respect these people because you have to be a professional level musician and have incredible aural skills to do this, but i think they are insane.

Hi, so Im getting to the point where I'm going to have to choose a college in the next few months, one of the thoughts I had was to literally come up with a few names of band directors or music alumni from the schools Im considering and ask them about their college experiences and if they have any tips and advice...do you think this is a good idea? If you do, do you(or anyone else who reads this) have any baseline questions I can ask them if I do email them

    1. Symphony No. 4 - David Maslanka 2. Traveler - David Maslanka 3. Wine Dark Sea - John Mackey 4. Concerto for Wind Ensemble - Kevin Day 5. Come Sunday - Omar Thomas 6. Festival Variations - Claude T. Smith 7. The Frozen Cathedral - John Mackey 8. Of Our New Day Begun - Omar Thomas 9. Rocky Point Holiday - Ron Nelson 10. Symphony No. 2 - John Barnes Chance There may be some bias in this list, but I feel that all 10 of these pieces truly show what wind symphony is. These pieces all have something that stands out in them, and a lot of them are just fun listens the whole way through. Personally, I don't think pieces like Lincolnshire Posy are all that special (respectfully) compared to these pieces.

I’ve been a trombonist for 10 years (mainly bass trombone) I’m a senior in high school rn and we just wrapped up band camp week 1 and my favorite part of camp is putting everything we learned earlier in the day together and performing it all to end off rehearsal. today we ended off rehearsal with the first half of are show Movements 1-2 with music and body (I also played my solo with 95% accuracy with few mistakes) which really made my rehearsal feel so good as the low brass tech and a lot of the band gave me high fives and fist bumps Coming off of last season as a podium placed band in 4A state finals (3rd overall out of 45 bands) excited as all heck for this season as are show this year is end of the world themed! Good luck on your guys season

What are the scholarship opportunities for my major / area / department? 6. What is the average starting salary for recent graduates with entry level positions? 7. Way to diss a whole genre of music that has rich heritage and teaches technique, balance, articulation, musical form, etc. Sorry that French horns get up beats but percussionists get a ton of rests in certain concert band music but we don’t cry about it 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 we just count and know it serves a purpose. Also Purple Pageant and Rolling Thunder are my two favorite actual marches, not pieces with “march” in the title. 😎

This is how the choir music at church was organized. The numbers made it easy for rehearsals too: "Ok, next pull out 584, O GOD BEYOND ALL PRAISING, five, eight, four." I would HIGHLY recommend this for any large music library for schools, churches, etc. For individuals, alphabet works best.
