I don't think the "cheating"-line from Claire is talking about cheating as in "hacking", just cheating as in not going to get the item yourself but "asking a friend to give you one" (if you would look at it from the character's perspective)

That's almost certainly what it's for, as nowhere else in any of the games does it try to account for hacking, anc trading pokemon and items is a built-in feature, so they know it's possible you get the item from someone else, so they accounted for that.

I’ve heard people say that gen 5 is the last game with actual interesting hidden content, but gen 7 for instance has a surprising amount of hidden things in it. I assume people view newer games as having less obscure content due to the fact that every hidden fact or detail is usually plastered all across the internet day one, if not leaked beforehand.

Something that wounds me about the Ralts knockout is that it's actually a pretty significant time save for speedrunning! That means if someone gets their God run while also getting just the perfect IVs on that Zigzagoon, the category might die for a long time!
Oh! And I believe that Hiker who knows about Arceus to be the same Hiker as the one at Sinjoh Ruins in HeartGold SoulSilver! He also begins his text with "Oh! We meet again!" if you get that obscure cutscene from visiting the ruins a second time. Same as his second time in Diamond & Pearl!

The Clair line was likely because of the held item trade possibility. In the Gen 2 games Nintendo put a lot of effort into fixing exploits and softlocks, they probably did quite a bit of testing for the held item trades. From a programming standpoint it's quite easy to do, when you speak to Clair after she's told you to get the Dragon Fang the game checks two things: your inventory to see if you have said fang, and a flag that's set when you pick the fang up. Games like this use flag values to prevent items from respawning or players from reversing their own progress. Clair has different responses depending on the status of those two checks, I'm curious if there's also dialog for if the fang has been picked up but is not in your inventory (IE you gave it to a Pokémon and either stored them in a box or traded them away).

Kind of like Sinnoh badge checker for Elite 4 won't let you in unless you actually have obtained all badges.
Or moreso all the Sinnoh walk through walls exploits using integer limits and the safari retire flag to activate obscure events

    • @qty1315
      @qty1315 Рік тому +9

I was just thinking that they only coded it so that the only way that Clair would give you the badge is in the specific area in the Dragon's Den after you found the item.
I don't think it's as complicated as you're making it out to be. Since it's not possible for her to give the badge in the actual gym, they just added that line of dialogue if you showed up with the Dragon Fang at all, legit or not. It was probably designed that way mainly because otherwise, if you could get the badge from her in the gym with a Dragon Fang and get the badge from her in Dragon's Den, that could cause issues, and the fix they'd have to do would be more complicated, so they just went with the simplest fix possible for that scenario.

Similar to the Ralts KO, there's a similar phenomenon that can happen in Pokémon Colosseum. At one point, there's a scripted battle between Eagun and a cipher grunt named Skrub. Eagun uses a Pikachu, while Skrub uses a shadow Hitmontop. The fight is supposed to end with Skrub winning and a cutscene playing afterwards that indicates this, making way for the player to battle them. Because Eagun's Pikachu has the Static ability, however, it is possible for the ability to trigger on turn 1, then have Hitmontop get paralyzed for enough turns after that to lose the fight. I remember when I discovered the watching the S.S. Tidal cutscene. I was traveling from Lilycove to Slateport and I went to sleep, but the game didn't spawn me in Slateport and I was like, "what?" so I looked at the Town Map and saw I was on the map just west of Pacifidlog, and when I checked again I was slightly farther west, suggesting the boat was moving across those routes in real time. Eventually it arrived in Slateport on it's own, so I did a run back to Lilycove and went to sleep, which teleported me there instantly instead of waking up mid-journey. Eventually I wondered why the routes west of Pacifidlog were simulated in real time, so I looked out the window and lo-and-behold there was the boat sailing through those routes. Was pretty cool to find. I'd imagine lots of players have wondered why you have to sleep twice going from Lilycove to Slateport without ever realizing that the boat cutscene was the reason.

About the Arceus Hiker, it is theorized by Japanese people that that hiker is actually Volo, who is also popularly theorized to be immortal and lived for hundreds of years.
One reason this was a thing is that Volo uses uncommon first-person pronouns in Japanese. That hiker uses the same pronouns.
Also, Volo's Ginko Guild outfit actually slightly resembles a hiker outfit for some reason. And this is a hiker who is awfully enthusiastic about Arceus.
There are further theories that the hiker in SInjoh Ruins is the same Arceus in Platinum, which will also be theorized to be Volo for the very same reasons.
What adds up is, Sinjoh Ruins is a very specifically used to worship Arceus. And what other person do we see in there? Cynthia, who is supposedly the descendant of Volo or Cogita.
Edit. A lot of replies seem to fail to understand what I actually mean. They definitely won't have the plan of Volo when Platinum and HGSS just came out. What I was saying is, when the character Volo was planned during the development of Legends Arceus, they might took inspiration from these two specific hikers who worshipped Arceus.

fun fact about that arceus philosopher/hiker guy! he also appears in two other events between Pt&HGSS, and there is a very popular theory in the japanese side of the fanbase that he is actually Volo from Legends Arceus! the reason is that the philosopher speaks in a very (VERY) specific way, which is the exact same way Volo speaks in Japanese.
Japanese has a lot of different ways you can speak, like having polite/casual speech, many different first-person pronouns, and sentence enders that can make the vibe of your speech change.
Both the hiker and Volo speak with polite speech, friendly speech, and both use two different first person pronouns, which is already rare for a character to do (it's very common in real life tho), but BOTH pronouns are also very uncommon.
It's also supported by the fact that he's so knowledgeable on plates and sinnoh history, and appears around ruins which volo is known for doing. and the fact that he's a philosopher when Volo's name comes from a philosophical statement (volo, ergo sum). (cogito's name comes from the similar "cogito, ergo sum") Additionally, Cogito is hinted in game to have lived for way longer than normal human lifespan, and if Volo is related to her like he appears to be, then maybe he can too.
Or maybe he's just a weird reference to this random hiker guy!!!!!!
anyway if anyone's ever seen fanart of volo in a hiker outfit or in present day sinnoh, that is why 😇

For your trivia about the Pokémon that appear in the credits of Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, they are indeed mostly randomly pulled from Pokémon in the Pokédex...except for one! The last image is always the player's starter Pokémon. I think it serves as a reminder of the player's humble beginnings as a trainer. Come to think of it, I suppose that's why for the credits in ORAS, they inserted images of the player's Pokémon throughout some important battles.

I actually got the "Sit on Guzma's Thrown" cutscene as well as the "Executor Island sun/moon bathing" cutscene in my playthroughs of the the Alola games. They were really interesting and fun to see little easter eggs like that, especially when knowing nothing about them beforehand.
I'm curious if the last one is purely because you guys hacked the game. I have seen solo play throughs before and don't remember seeing the same pokemon get flashed like that multiple times (Alpharad's Mudkip only video for example). I wonder if that is something that would be different between an original cartridge vs an emulator, though I feel that is highly unlikely.

I actually knew a vast majority of these this time!
When I was a kid, I saw the emerald boat cutscene because I inspected everything I could. I also sat in Guzma’s throne once he left in gen 7, and the Ralts one is well documented in speedrunning circles. I knew the trainer card ones, though I have never gotten them myself. I also got the exeggutor cutscene while shiny hunting around midnight. I got the Toys R’ Us Arceus as a kid, and learned about the Arceus cutscenes after the fact, but I never went back for the cutscenes. I probably should. And lastly, I knew about the Pokédex one in gen 3, because I did a nuzlocke and ended up with a mostly empty Pokédex.
These weren’t as obscure as the others in this series, but I also know I have played pokemon more than most, so I’m sure a lot of people have never seen these before.

Knew a bit of these, like the event with the Skull Grunt and how the RSE credits work. Few of these are really interesting though such as the lost animations.
I do wonder if that event Arceus is in the Mystery Gift DNS, so that people can experience it as close to legit as possible still.

And also I hadn't grabbed the Bugnium Z the first time I was the Guzma's room (pro though it was just decor) and when I came back to grab it, I also inspected the chair. Had the little cutscene play out and now whenever I'm in that room or see that room from SM/USUM, I remember that cutscene.

The arceus event is triggered by how you obtained the pokemon. You need to edit save data and specifically have it obtained through the mystery box to set the flag off for the ncp.

I have a pokemon fact that i'm 100% sure nobody here knows.
So, did you know that in Emerald there is an unused event for a surfing Pichu egg, that was only discovered a few years ago, and can be triggered with pomeg glitch arbitrary code execution?
Oh, you did? Good. But there is something about this event that you actually don't know.
See, the way this surfing Pichu egg works is the game just gives you a regular Pichu egg, and then after you receive it it looks for it inside of your party and teaches it surf. It actually runs checks to see if it's in 2nd slot, 3rd slot, 4th slot, 5th slot or 6th slot.
... but it doesn't check for the 1st slot. Because obviously under normal circumstances a pokemon you just obtained can't be in the first slot of your party, as you can't just walk around with no pokemon on you. However, with a pomeg glitch subglitch known as instant pomeg glitch it's actually possible to have an empty slot as the first slot in your party, and if you do the Pichu egg will be in the first slot. And so... the game will fail to teach it surf. That's right, what's even more rare than an undistributed surfing Pichu? An undistributed surfing Pichu that can't surf.

I think I have a good idea for what that special effect was for.
It didn't flash like that on level 6, but level 7 is also the level Caterpie evolves. So, it could be informing the player that this is a special level up, and that the pokemon is going to evolve this level. I think it would've been really cool to have, personally
