How Useful Was My UCT Degree for My Career? | trying2adult

- A degree was an incredibly useful thing to have during our parents' time... but that was 40 years ago. Today, it takes more than just a degree to make it in this rough economy.
If you go and search for tech jobs on LinkedIn or other job sites, you will notice that a good number of those positions do not have a degree requirement at all. Graduate and entry-level positions appear to be the only positions are strict on the degree requirement, the rest have a strong preference for good work experience and skills in specific technologies that don't come with a degree.
In this video, I share my experiences of how useful my degree from UCT was and I talk about how UCT actually helped me with my career.

“Wherever there’s rich people, money just tends to follow” 🔥. Stanning the content Tino. Also #Consistency! Keep it up.
🕺🏾 bruhh UA-cam requires a serious level of consistency thanks for noticing!🕺🏾
The sad part is that it’s a different ball game for certain humanities students. Great content! 🔥
Haha it's a rough world out here 😅. Thank you 😊
This was a very useful video Tino. I'm a final year IT student who may probably need to go find work next year and your experiences have been quite insightful
That's really cool man all the best in your final year I can only imagine how rough things are with the lockdown.
hey man. how is it going? have you landed a job yet?
I didn't realize that foreigners faced these types of problems in South Africa, thank you for making me realize that
Great video Tino! I'm also a UCT engineering graduate. My take is that a degree is important for getting your foot in the door as most well paying jobs in engineering have a degree as a requirement. After that first job though I think work experience becomes more important. However one shouldn't overlook the difficulty involved with actually finding that ideal first job. Your first job is important because it lays the foundation for the rest of your career.
The set up behind you is sick🔥
Agreed! His set up influenced me to get my desk in order 😂
True, He should do a desk-setup video 🙈. He is our very own Casey Neistat, John Fish, Jake Wright, Matt D’Avella, Ali Abdaal & Anas Nuur Ali. Hahahahaha, just kidding.
😂😂 ya'll should have seen it before I decided to make it my backdrop! I do need to add more RGB lights though.
@@StalkerBulele right I SBWl his background 🤣

Good insights bru
Thank you Francois! 🙏🏾🙏🏾
@@trying2adult Welcome...where u at these days?? I am still stuck in Philippines...awful...
Tino 🙌🏽 your videos are amazing and insightful! In the real world, how much of a difference would you say there is between an undergrad and honours degree in CompSci? Loving the content, keep it up 👍🏼
Thanks a lot Zane! 🙏🏾 To be honest when it comes to jobs and career growth in most IT careers in SA, honours degree doesn’t give you much of an advantage. The major reason honours degrees exist is because a lot of countries consider an undergraduate degree to be four years, hence why three year degrees at UCT have an “honours” year. I want you to do a small exercise though, do some job hunting (focus on the types of jobs you would actually want to do after graduating) on sites like LinkedIn, Indeed, etc. take note of the degree requirement they have. A lot of jobs in IT these days don’t even have a degree requirement. Most positions listed at AWS Cape Town (including mine) don’t have a degree requirement too. However, if you ever plan on furthering your studies (postgrad studies) or work abroad then an honours degree will be helpful because some Masters programs require a four year bachelors degree or honours degree and the degree requirements for certain visas and countries might require a four year degree (this is an area I have little experience and knowledge in so I’m speaking from conjecture here)...if you plan on leaving SA then do some research into this if you contemplating doing honours.
You doing the Lord's work Samanyika, We wait for that R500. Nzara Nzara!! I have watched all of your videos.lol
😂😂 haha don't worry ichauya. Give it a few more days now. Thanks for the support wangu.
UCT took us through the most dude shuuuu, it only lands you the job then haiii I'm not sure what it does after that. I'll come back to you after 5 years. Companies want to see what you were involved in previously
Yep UCT will do a lot to get you hat first job. After that you're on your own.
I've also noticed Careers Service is only accessibly to Alumnis for 3 years after they graduate... so basically you lose a lot of the good benefits within years after you graduate.
keep going man thanks for sharing
Thank you fam, will do!
Your videos are so informative 🙏🏾💫
Do you plan or have you considered going overseas? Why or why not? Please make a video if you can. Great video as usual.
Thank you Nico!🙏🏾 I actually would like work overseas at least for a couple of years at some point in the next 5 years if my career can hopefully take me there. I'm not sure if I would settle there permanently though but I guess I need to experience life out there first... How about you? Where are you from and would you move overseas?
trying2adult thanks for coming back to me. It depends on various variables. But generally at this point it wouldn’t be feasible. I’m 34 years of age and I’m not a skilled worker, I have a degree in Business Management but no real technical or special skills. I stay in Polokwane in SA in Limpopo Province. I’m afraid of unemployment and come from a low income background. That has unfortunately shaped my thinking and made me very comfortable and stuck; mentally, financially and career-wise. I think that’s why I find your channel so refreshing. You are a lot of what I wanted to be but wasn’t courageous or resourceful enough to pursue.
That’s quite profound. Indeed there’s many variables that come into play when one is considering moving overseas. That’s definitely something worth looking into and I look forward to sharing any interesting things I come across.
Totally agree with you
Fire content man🔥🔥🔥. Keep it coming. I'm an about to graduate matric. I want to pursue a career as a data scientist. Will it be sufficient if i pursue computer science as my first major and stats as my second major? UCT is my next destination 🥂👨🦯. Well hopefully.
I'm interested in cloud computing I wanted to know if doing IT can help me get in the field
How difficult it is to get a job in IT as a foreigner in SA.
Bro, any sense of how much an LLB at UCT costs? Confused
LLB tuition is about R60,000 per year for 2020. You can review the fees in the Fees Handbook (search for "LLB") - www.students.uct.ac.za/sites/default/files/image_tool/images/434/study/handbooks/2020/UCT_Handbook_12_2020_StudentFees.pdf
Aaaaaaaay💃🏿💃🏿💃🏿 “These jobs came to me”😂
😂😂 bruh I never realised the massive privilege until I started working on this video. UCT really did the things in ways I didn't realise.
New subscriber, love your content ❤️
Who’s still watching his vids in 2024✔️
Would you ever start your own start-up?
Yes I most certainly would! I dream of starting my own business some day. I don't think I'll ever get the types of money that I want if I solely rely on a salary, and I also want to have more free time in the future so starting my own business seems like the next best thing.
