Thank you for following. :)
Dads done a great job working on stubby in stretching it and just keeping on working with it it’s great to see him occupied
You may not know anything about engines Mike, but you did an amazing job with Duke. You should be able to pull it off with Smokey. All it takes is some replacement parts, and maybe a complete engine rebuild, if possible.
I enjoyed Andrea’s colour commentary!
This is the best episode we have had for a while!!. Is it shagged? Of course. Can you fix it? Absolutely!!. I know you were cold shouldered at Mats, but grit the teeth. A month or so ago Tim featured a Chicago? company who specialise in welded repairs of damaged heads. Good value as well. The rest is fairly easy, nothing you have not already dealt with prior to this.
It's all good, tim was busy and didn't know who I was. I have some ideas so stay tuned...
As a retired Detroit Diesel mechanic, A swallowed valve is a very common problem I've seen with Detroit engines.
Behind every great man stands a woman making sure he gets sh*t done! 😄👍
You got that right!
Mike just pull the engine out and replace it with some thing else. You must have other engines around the yard
It’s good to see you and dad unraveling the mystery of Smokey. You guys will get it figured out and I’m looking forward to being along for the ride!
Sucks about the engine, but on the bright side, it's probably the easiest engine to find parts for. Or a replacement.
I'd live to see you stick a camera on your dad when he's working on the trucks. Even a quick little 5 minute edit within your vids as he's doing something. I'd love to see him drive stubby down the road.
Mike is Andrea the new Camera person/Director of your Channel😅😅😅 love her naration theres a touch of David Attenbour 😊😊😊,lucky guy shes a keeper

Hi Mike i had the same Story like you, 12.7 liter Series 60 , i bought a used 14 liter , this are on outside the same Block not longer not wider not highter. Replace he komlete engine ,,,cheeper and faster!!! On 14 liter you get easy 650HP my K100 Runs like hell now! Greatings Robert from Switzerland
Watching the used prices on the series 60s, might be cheaper to build that one unless there's significant damage you haven't seen yet. At least you'll know what you've got when it's done
That’s why you should “ normal “ size tires on the front so you got more clearance.👍
At least you can still use the piston if you can’t find your tea strainer😂 in all seriousness, you’ll be adding to your skill set again Mike, ‘The Rise of Smokey’ coming to UA-cam this Fall
Well Mike, you got 3 trucks the same. Now is when you combine them all into one good one.
You're right, Stubby is the perfect length for a COE.
Oh, holy cow!!! A ventilated piston!!! 😱😱😱
Mike does the bodywork and interior and “Clint” does the engine work!
Ya have to keep the wires tied back, away from the heat 😊 oh, btw, a boroscope would come in handy
Stubby is looking g0o0o0o0o0o0od. Can't wait to see it pull something. Whole bunch of lights and horns. Real low on chrome spinners. I forgot what I was talking about.
I think it's great your wife is joining in and attempting to learn some of the truck jargon. Cheers friends!
Great video Mike at least you know what's wrong with the top end of Smokey. Ventilated piston O My not good. Head doesn't look so good either. Looking forward to your next video stay safe Mike, Dad and Andrea.
I’ve been waiting to hear Smokey run. It will be a little longer seems.
Great time for a collaboration with Tim Gentry as he loves the series 60 Detroits
Mate you’ve rebuilt the engine for duke this should be no problem for you now
Hi Mike and family, you know so many people, ring around, find the 2nd hand parts you need,it would cost a fortune for a new rebuild, and what you are going to use it for,why spend all that money,it’s more important to end up with a reliable engine,at a price that won’t break the bank, and your viewers will want to watch, good video,do what you can afford,we will be watching, and enjoying,ps keep the mrs on side, very important.
That sucks, poor Smokey still won't be going anywhere for quite some time.
Strip the motor right down and paint the block that lovely Cummins blue
Hello Mr. PAUL Harvey and "The Rest Of The Story". That is going back a few years for sure. Some damage there. You can probably save the block. The head probably BER. ( Beyond Economic Repair) needs more work than buying a replacement head. The real challenge will be for you to remember your disassembly orientation for reassembly. Your Dad had a better idea orientate the parts on disassembly to match the direction of parts as they are located prior to removal. Less mistakes made that way. Looking forward to seeing you complete this challenge. You can do it. Mike.
I am thinking it would be maybe a good Idea to find a reman,at least there would be a warrenty.
That's old age andrea not weakness 😂😂😂...
Dang. You got this Mike
Mike I was looking on Facebook marketplace and found a 12.7 litre series sixty in Inisfail Alberta for $5500 that has been rebuilt
Hi from France, i grew up in Australia driving mostly Detroit 8V71's,later 6V92TTA's,i was never a big fan,but great sounding engines.Every-one was more than surprised when they went "four-stroke",even more surprised wheb they went "électronique".I've never driven a four stroke GM,there might be flaws in différent models, but back in the day "Old Smokey" might have been a pretty cool bit of équipement, great to see you putting her back in shape.Great little chanel.
I may be wrong but I think the 60 serise Detroit was the first computer controlled Diesel engine 1984
😲😳😲😳 omg 😱😳😱😳 mike I hope that you didn't pay to much for smokey cuz that engine is toasted now after all the damage we are seeing I hope that you can find another engine somewhere
Good afternoon 😁👋 Mike. Well, at least now you know what you may have to do to old Smokey’s heart ❤️ Detroit engine. If you can locate a good engine someplace, possibly a CAT 🐱 that would be nice 👍 I always enjoy watching your content on here. Brings back some memories for me when I was a young teenager learning how to work on those trucks at my neighbors heavy duty tow business in HoustonTx.
Your Dad has a lot of knowledge and will be able to help you with the rebuild I'm sure..
You fixed Duke. You can fix smokie
Stubby has always been the truck with best donk. Your old man has done a fantastic job to get it to the condition it is in now. I watched the vlog you did when you looked at it in breakers yard half buried and I thought you had rocks in your head even looking at it. Man now look at it, it best in ya fleet. You need to rename it Phoenix. …. Well actually that may be more appropriate for Smokey 😂.
Nothing 25k dollars can’t fix.
I could buy a 2021 14L reman for 22k... 🤔
@@mikethetrucknut you know how much every belt hose line and fluids cost plus putting a new engine on a million mile radiator is a bad idea so there’s another half a grand to have it cleaned and rodded only ti find out the core is rotten making it 1500$ so your 22k
Dollar ending still
Cost 30k by the time you finish. Oh and a 1500$ clutch because the 14L makes 1850
Torque
I have a line on a used 2005 12.7L with 100k on a rebuild. Thinking that's the way to go
Try marvel mystery oil Mike. Should help free it up. Nm that, I remember you saying that maybe an injector cup may have fell in a cylinder. Yep, wow! Needs a full inframe rebuild.
Bruce Wilson has a 12.7l series 60 for sale. He’s in Tennessee now. Wouldn’t hurt to at least talk to him about it.
Yeah that's a long ways away from me. 4days of driving one way.
Hey mike good video ,glad to see you and your dad still poking along
Look good
Mike, one step at a time. Get her rebuilt you did it for Duke.
Too bad that Andrea could not be your camera girl more often... hell of a lady who is supportive of the hubbies hobby and puts up with dirty socks in the laundry, still goes to work and sometimes is the difference of eating or paying off bills. Once you hit the MIllion subscriber point... your beer bill will go down and dad will get more help from the guy who gave you inspiration to spend more money than anyone cares to share on a needed hobby or possible job when you retire from selling and go to everyday work on junk that no one else would try to do. Very few people understand why we drove a truck, or lived a life of a trucker... did your own repairs and then hoped the wife who was home trying to get kids to school, pay the mortgages on everything you needed to survive. If this is hard for you to read, imagine this seventy four year old guy in alaska explaining what you know already. Just trying to support you in a positive way Mike. Love this whole family as if I were a extension of it in some perverted thinking.... not the best choice of wording but for a guy who never went to school, just a dumb native who has a butt white as rice but never had same opportunities as other kids. Comment is getting long in the tooth, back to the video...
Thank you for the support means alot 🙏
@@mikethetrucknut Your replying to our comments means a great deal to me as well Mike. After watching the entire video, I do believe the engine still has life left in it... its how much the difference it costs to do a total rebuild or just toss another engine in it. Its not going to be on the road working in a short term thinking of my part so rebuilding what you have may make more sense. The costs of finding and shipping prevent a cheapest way, import and export taxes on the stuff makes so much difference. Maybe its time for a "Vacation drive" to your neighbor .. the usa, and see if a "A hole" Gentry can find you a better deal. I unsubscribed from his channel, he is just a fake company who is dragging down from the men who are busting butts to make a living as a sole owner trucker. I know, too long a comment but just so much to say in a short way
Oh wow dropped a couple of valves that sucks
Those treddel valves are a pain
Give Edison motors a call. Would love to see a cabover hybrid
That would be cool
You should rebuild one of the cat engines n put it in smokie
Well that stinks. But at least now you can say when you’re done. You’ve built a Detroit as well. Great job to you too
Watching now
Well that is depressing. I guess install the sleeper windows, make it watertight, finish the interior and any other fixings that need done, put the engine back together and then pull it outside and park it and start on something else. Some opportunity will pop up on repairing the engine just be patient. It's not like you need to work this truck on Monday. It's a hobby and it's supposed to relieve stress not cause it. Put that toy to the side and play with one of your other ones. No deadlines to meet.
I was shouting but you didnt hear me. Sad to say but that looks like a lemon to me. If the crank is done you are back looking for a new lump. Engine out time me thinks.
i love the way your dadover looks things
oh my goodness
Nice to see you get stuck in again
Hey Mike, I haven't commented on one of your videos for quite some time I would call that engine cooked mate. Good luck with the rebuild looking forward to it
HOLY CRAP.... I was hoping you were going to luck out and have a simple fix. Wasn't expecting to see that 😧☹
Are you having flashbacks of Duke LOL... Listening to you and Andrea while you are working on the engine
reminds me so much of how my wife and I were. I miss her every day but the reminder makes it harder.
I do have 27 years worth of a lot of good memories that I'm thankful for though, so I try and focus on those...
Okay, that's enough of being a downer. Back to the trucks. I still live and breath trucks even though I'm retired.
Always have. I'm probably the only 4th grader that got kicked out of school for reading truck magazines during class LOL.
Sorry for your loss. Yeah I was hoping it wouldn't be that bad ... a rebuild would mean I have to replace oil cooler, oil pump and turbo. 😬
@@mikethetrucknut Thanks Mike. A replacement engine would certainly be a lot faster program,
but if you rebuild then you know exactly what you have. You did a really good job on Dukes engine,
and that was your first, so this one should be a lot easier. I've never priced replacement Series 60's before.
Are they cheaper than Cats ?
Hey Mike. If you decide to rebuild boat anchor there so many Chinese knock offs out there you know what your getting! Didn’t you buy a Cat engine not long ago?
Wrong vintage
@@mikethetrucknut could you trade it for the right vintage
That tends to happen when they go to long in between overhead adjustments
Hi mike 😊
Hi Mike, the in side of the cab looks good,,do you think if you paint the fibreglass on the inside, it will take all the smell away😊,,,keep it up ,live your programs, ❤
Well if you went around the other side and put your socket bar on and pushed down on it that be much easier the trying to push it upwards just my thoughts on it think about it first save your health
Mike,
I hate when that happens. There is always a better way of looking at things when restoring it. Start with the engine, electrical and body. It's a lot of what ifs, but you need to use your resources of what you have versus buying unnecessary stuff and wasting your time. The point is restoring it to running condition first. Then , I would have swapped K2 cab to that chassis saving time. I'm no paint and body guy. Just using what I have accumulated to make it work.
Bonjour Mike, comme beaucoup disent, vous avez réussi à refaire Duke . vous pouvez refaire Smokey 😊
Get in touch w Tim Gentry he uses a shop in East TN that can make that engine like new.
awww man Mike Houston we have a problem that looks bad poor smokey someone was mean to him but it s fine as a man I know would say hahaha
Mike never argue with the boss
Well that sucks Mike, on a Happer note there's a video out from a guy in San Deigo Calif that is installing a 427 B/B in C8 Vette doing everything himself don't know if he's going to do a kit, course there also Lingenfelter performance, think they got a kit......🙂
Hey Mike have you ever tried PB blaster it seems to work better than WD 40 keep up the good work brother can't wait to see Smokey running love what you do on the channel can't wait to see what is next good luck my friend
I like the content of your channel so keep it up
Thank you for that 🙏
💯
That looks like an insurance job to me, blew the motor up and tried or did collect insurance.
It’ll be interesting what you will do with k2
I enjoy your videos a lot!
I am looking for a Peterbilt 362 or Kenworth K100 year 1980-1987 in good original condition. If anyone in this community knows anyone who sells these I m happy to hear from you. It is a big dream of me. I live in Switzerland and dont know where to find one.... Thank you for your support :)
C&C equipment did a test on milwaukee against snap on impact tools and they put a half inch drive snap on against a three eighths drive milwaukee impact tool. The results are in and it literally backed the snap on backwards, smoke was evident, the milwaukee impact was stronger and some damage done to the snap on impact was obvious. Snap on has to warranty their tools regardless of how or why it happened. Clints pockets are much deeper than yours Mike, you need to convince Andrea to let you purchase a few more milwaukee power tools. I was really surprised at these results myself being a snap on tool guy myself. Now if Milwaukee were to sponsor a few tools then these tools which cost a kings ransom might fall into affordable category. You are not Robbie Layton who is spoiled like a cat that doesn't hunt, just lays in your way and you keep feeding it or the wife will kill you/LOL. I think that our economy may turn around and see lower prices on everything after our election is over. I would not count on anything being cheaper in the short term but just maybe if your government sees us have a better economy, then your over taxed economy will be reflected in a similar way... not a political comment, just praying for things to get better for all of us. I really wish that our two countries could of got off on a better foot a heck of a long time ago because, we have a border between us that should not be there. I love canada just as much as america.... we are all americans if we look at the map and see we are in north america... I guess we need to rename the whole shebang and call it Ameri Canda.... just some combination of the two countries.... no need to lose any sovereignty.
Canada doesn’t have any culture left. It’s so full of foreign people. Yes USA should take it over. USA still has a chance. Trump 2024. True dope has ruined it. Like he was hoping.
JUST BUY A REBUILD KIT FOR THIS MOTOR IT COMES WITH NEW LINERS PISTONS RINGS BEARINGS AND GASKETS ,,WAY CHEAPER THAN PULLING THE MOTOR OUT OR REPLACING IT,,THEY DO THAT OVER HERE IN OZ ALL THE TIME LOOK IN TO THAT,,WAY BETTER PLAN FOR THIS MOTOR
Isn’t that a typical Detroit oil everywhere except inside the engine
Told you Smokey was a moneypit that deserved to get scrapped.... (you might not remember that)
I would have done the ether trick.... 4 cans of ether will geet it working and another 16 to diagnose it and you wouldnt have to take it apart cos it would to it it'sself.
Saves time and money.... That's what i would have done before repairing the burnt stuff. cos likely i would have turned into a Blazing Curbsniffer :)
Hey mike you got that parts truck you can rob the motor out of
James pretty found a Detroit and got it running a little while ago , perhaps it’s for sale
Sadly james is a long ways away from me.
@@mikethetrucknut just mentioned it just in case . Don’t know the distance but sound far away
Also Bruce Wilson is digging one out I saw last nite , he brakes them for spares
Hmm what's more worthwhile rebuild or just get another secondhand engine
You don’t know what you’re getting! Left that important word out
Chin up you can do it
If you have to build the engine anyway, a 14liter or cat c15 would be awesome.
looks the same as my Excavator cat 225b 3304 engine
Just remember dads know best
Oh!
You will get it Mike!! Love the channel
Now go to Richie bros and buy you a forklift lol 😂
That engine is poooched I'd be yanking it out doing an out frame on it, no easy fix for that one.
Well there's your problem
Where’s the bore scope
She dropped a valve
Think you need a big tool box on wheels
Hey, don't be rude to the Mrs.
Get a hold of tim Gentry hey the best at building Detroits
Well use what you learned from rebuilding Duke's engine to rebuild Smokey's engine.. This ain't your first rodeo!!
you deffinately have some work ahead of you
Problem with motor is it starts with series and ends in 60
If you rebuild that you better put a bull gear in it.
