I often ask myself why do I read, watch, listen to things that I know I will never use or apply and I always come up with the same answer. Knowledge / learning is like a Swiss Army Knife. Thank You Guys for adding to my cluttered mind. Cheers!!!
The one thing this made us realise is how much we miss you two. We hope we can catch up somewhere in the world real soon, whether that is in the USA, Europe or someplace crazy.
When I used to ride motorcycles often I was asked what is my favourite bike. My answer was always the same; the one I am riding now. My sense is it would be the same regarding sailboats. I own a monohull, a big fat bottomed girl, cutter rigged Bayfield 32 and for me, right now, everything considered, I love it. Either the boat suits my sailing habits, or my sailing habits suit the boat, but it works. I’m sure if I owned a cat I’d feel exactly he same. That said If I’m shopping for my next boat, price is a defining factor and would probably take the cat out of the equation, but if the boat has sails and Mother Nature is giving me some wind, I’ll still be thrilled.
My husband and I had this discussion for years. He was a 4th generation boat builder. Our first boat together was a small racing catamaran. The question of speed always made us lean towards the catamaran as our choice to circumnavigate the world. My best friend (husband) went to work one day & at the age of 50 died of a heart attack. My point is: do your homework... but, just go for it! These folks did and I loved their collaboration. ~ Love from a fellow Texas sailor💙
RedEyeOfJupiter 2121 ...I am.... although I’m doing it in a land yacht. I’ve been a full-time rv traveler for over a year now. 20,000 miles so far. Thank you for your kind words💕
A discussion that never gets old! We bought our monohull (Catalina 42) instead of a catamaran, simply due to price. We just couldn’t afford to even consider a catamaran. But, all things being equal, we would have gone for a cat. Just for the room. Offshore, I’d rather be in a mono hull, but we just don’t spend much time offshore. Enjoyed your video!
after watching few of these mono vs cat, i feel most start off with mono then upgrade to cat later when they want comfort to live aboard and have enough money saved to upgrade. either way you have the same experience when visiting islands and same experience sailing in storms.
That wonderful keel on Ruby Rose makes her a my favorite monohull. I like heavy displacement mono and cat sailboats for their comfort in rough seas and their load carrying capacity, compared to low displacement ones. Speed is nice but it rates below a high displacement boat for cruising. If my choice was between a Southerly or a Lagoon of the same length, I would chose the Lagoon. This was an excellent discussion and I cannot wait for Part 2.....thank you, both couples!!!!
As the old saying goes, “One sailboat is sailing, two sailboats are racing!” Thank you for another great conversation. You continue to produce high quality, entertaining, and informative content!
The way I evaluate the relative values in comparing mono-hulls v. catamarans must include price per square foot and/or price per cubic foot. When you do that the catamarans often work out to cost less and are a better value. Also, I believe that all categories are not equal; and therefore, a weighted average to account for which factors are more important than others must be used. This weighted average is highly personal but look to what you do most often and what categories contribute to increasing your confidence in sailing or enjoyment at both anchor or sailing. Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose has videos which use five categories: safety & design, build quality, interior design, performance, and value for money. Their videos offer lots of valuable information. My issue is whether each category is of equal weight. Thanks for sharing.
The combined knowledge of this group is amazing! Gained experience by living full time on a boat is priceless. Thinking back on the RV days seems like a million years ago.
Listening to this conversation I was struck by the experience you've gained since you started. Even better, your ability to explain your experience in practical and pragmatic ways. Well done!
Not something I'm terribly interested in, mainly because I couldn't drag my wife on to a sailboat with a brace of Clydesdales, but informative nonetheless. Personally I think it's basically the Ford/Chevy debate. Everyone on each side thinks they have the better craft but you all did a really good job showing that the debate is really all about 10% and the other 90% is about equal. Good job you two, and keep the videos coming.
And you know his how? Oh yea, because you don't! Please keep your unkind comments to another channel or better yet to yourself because no one cares but you.
This is what the instant media should be useful for!! Great great hands on sharing and experiences! This should happen across the board on all things mechanical!! It would help cut down our human footprint on the eco system tremendously..... Not as many mistakes, turn ins or just shelved and never used! Great job guys!
Having sailed a 36' McGregor cat in the Marshall islands, three things: 1. No bruise sailing. Boat doesn't heel over anywhere like a mono hull. 2. Most stable position of heavy keeled monohull is on the bottom. Most stable position for most cats is just upside down. We could fill our cat with water and sail away. 3. Speed 4. Watched a long term cruising family jump over the side and swim to shore at an anchorage during a typhoon. Their boat was pitching an rolling too much to allow sleep. (Of course being on the shore watching their boat didn't make sleeping very easy either). Our Cat was just going thru some more gentle pitching motion. No roll. TWO HULLS TO CLEAN. While we had seen 22kts under sail, the normal cruise speed was more like 9kts and even then on some seas you had to watch jumping off the back of a wave into the face of another, risking pitchpoleing. Didn't enjoy passages as they, even with the numerous squalls, were boring. We didn't have an autopilot though so constant hand steering was required.
I appreciate anyone that can have an unbiased, calm discussion about their decisions and beliefs. This has been debated by sooo many cruisers. Thanks for being less "(ding ding ding) LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE!". Too much of that in general lately.
We’ve only had Motor Yachts. I couldn’t imagine being healed over in a monohull while sailing, and/or rolling at anchor all day & night while listening to the rigging clanking & rattling. Plus I enjoy 20 plus knots to get while the getting is good...But hey that’s just me Great Video as Always, and no fists were flying...😂😂😂
I loved listenning to this discussion, especially knowing which direction Nick and Terysa have chosen for their next boat. Thank you for another great video :)
So glad you posted this. As previously commented, I was in the market for a 30-35' cat. Every marina that I want to be in can't accommodate the beam unless I take a 50' slip. So, now I'm looking for a 40-50' mono, full length shallow keel, sloop rigged center cockpit. The one thing it must have is a separate shower stall. Everything else can be dealt with or changed.
You guys should get both your boats in the same pond at the same time and buddy boat, island hop together for a couple of months together, you would absolutely blow up youtube on both your chanels. Great Vid.
This is a great conversation. As much as I’ve watched and read on this topic, there are always new points to take away in each discussion. I’m looking forward to part two.
Hi there this is Sunday the 7th of July. I am here at my desktop watching my favorite family the Wynns. Cleo, Singra, Niki and Jayson. And I prefer the Catamaran. YOU HAVE MORE SPACE LEFT TO RIGHT. PERIOD. YOU MAY HAVE A LONGER FRONT TO BACK ON A MONO HAUL but I prefer the left to right space. Period again.
Not the usual stunning video of seascapes and mountainsides but interesting nonetheless with hearing the different perspectives. Looking forward to next Sunday morning. Till then, you both be safe.
I really did enjoy Nick and Terysa's videos of the week they spent with you. Because of that, I'm now following them, even though I had watched a couple of their catamaran shopping videos. I'm glad you all were able to get together. Now, we just need to get you guys hooked up with Zatara and family! When I win that lottery, I'll be following in your wake!
This was so fun!! We spent about 10 days in the BVI’s on a 2007 Leopard 420 this past Christmas, and we loved it! It was fun to pretend we were Jason and Nikki for a few days!
Great comparison, looking forward to part 2. I noted your conversation on Antifouling and from experience we had a 51 monohull with a 7 foot draft and now a 48 foot Catamaran with 4 ft draft. We use less antifouling on the catamaran as there is so much less surface area below the waterline, even though we have 2 hulls. Keep up the great work guys and thanks.
The backdrop in your discussion about mono vs multi hull boats is just surreally outrageous. The cocktails are a multiplier. The information about which type of boat allows my fantasy to go to the next level because any sailing in the South Pacific I do will be as a visual stowaway on your boat. Great videos, stories. Lots of fun! Thank you.
I loved this video on the Monohaul vs the catamaran.. I agree it is the most asked question when someone goes and buys a boat.. for personally I would choose the catamaran owners hull only because of the separation from the guests or family... I also get scared just looking at a monohaul on its side in the water it looks as though it's going to fall over😊 Thank you for sharing some beautiful pictures and this weeks amazing video... love b.c. you guys along with Miss Cleo and Singa💜💜💜💜💜💜💞💞💞💞💞💞😎😎😎😎😎😎💜🌺🍇🌺🍇🌺🍇🌺
Nice to see you 4 crazy kids together. Good personalities on one boat. When I took ASA 106 one of the guys in my class said "there are plenty of boats to dream about but choosing one will get you out there before dreaming about the perfect boat, there are plenty of hunters all over the world, what does that tell you"... this was after a conversation about how hunters are pretty but we all feel like we wouldn't go off shore in one. We were on an Island Packet 40... that think was like driving an Abrams and we were in a gail for 3 days... It was crazy! But that was pretty good advice I think. As for the storm... It was Wild and I was lucky to be part of the group. The school said they felt like we were about the best students they have so they didn't ground us. We set sail and all hell broke loose as we sailed out of the Chesapeake.
Great video, I struggled with the cat vs mono as well and decided to build my own cat to get everything that is important to me in my boat. Buy vs build might be an interesting show. Cheers
One thing that SV Delos found with their series on Cat vs Mono was the Cat sailors say you have to de-tune the sails a bit to keep the stresses down on a cat. With a mono it automatically spills wind by healing. The cat won't do that so the shrouds take on a lot more stress. This sounds like a wise discovery and ultimately it means the potential speed gap between a cat and a mono is less.
It seems the comparison is always being made with both types being similarly sized....not fair. Of course a 43 Cat is superior to a 40 Mono except in deep water gale conditions. The comparison I would make is between a 40- 45 Cat and a 55-65 Mono. I think the " at anchor" space and comfort is similar in that context. As far as at sail? It depends on the type of motion you prefer. Regardless..nice video as usual by both couples and a interesting subject.
A conversation on which sailboat is best , Catamaran or Monohull , for that long and not turning into at least one call for a " Man overboard " is simply amazing ! Shows Sailors do have more fun ! I think for the question for survival is that a mono in a really bad storm , can flip all the way around and up again , were as a cat flips , and it is just holding on praying for help to arrive . Although very rare , thank God ! There was a movie about this in 2015 called "Abandoned " which took place near New Zealand . Your video was Great on a never ending subject !
Cool conversation. Couple of notes I’d add. When I compare the two, for space and price its a 40 foot cat vs a 46 foot mono to get comparable value. So, bottom paint, two skinny hulls vs one fat hull the difference isn’t double. Engine maintenance? The quantity of oil is negligible. The real factor is doing the job twice. When it’s a repeatable task the time drops with proficiency which you have more of plus the recent with doing it twice. Plus, with two people, do it simultaneously and you have the benefit of a race or methodology or whatever. Slower if you only have one drain pan. Speed. Compare the happy medium that you actually operate in. Max vs max isn’t usually that realistic in cruisers. What about sailing around weather or a squall? The wind is usually within the sweet spot for either style so better speed with the cat gives you more options and therefore safety. That’s enough iPad typing for now. Thanks for the content and conversation.
Another great video 😊 Nikki, you look so much like Audrey Hepburn in this one. Has anyone ever told you that? You were giving me Breakfast at Tiffany’s vibes🙌🏽🙌🏽
Very good episode. Enjoyed it quite a bit. I am not sure about how delayed are your episodes are but the Zatara (Sailing Zatara) is in Tahiti this week and they did make that change from a monohull to a Cat and Keith has sworn that he would never go back. This is the second time they’re in Tahiti and they started with the same experience as the two of you at around the same time. Perhaps you can search them out and get their feelings and feedback on the move to a catamaran. Your’s and their channels are the two that I look forward to watching. Keep up the fantastic work.
You did a program covering exactly what I wanted to know... My last bit of research is how well the span between the hulls hold up thru heavy seas over an extended period...
I was wondering when you guys would finally mention Ruby Rose. Its great to see because I really enjoyed the videos on their page. I follow about 5 different V-Logs about sailing around the world but yours is definitely my favorite!!
Great discussion, great points touched on, individual consideration price, current planned destinations and anchoring or Marina cruising. Thank you so much to Jason, Nikki, Nick, Tyresa. ⛵🏝️
Fun discussion. I am partial to cats. I've chartered both a sail cat and motor cat. It is soooo hard to beat the room and comfort. I see you guys enjoyed the grand cockpit that a cat affords. Nice watching the sun go down as you talked. Looks great out there. Have fun and rock on.
The one thing I've heard repeatedly regarding the cat vs mono argument is the point of sail. The reason that mono-hulls can sail tighter is because their keel is larger. If you increase the keel on the cat it'll make that same angle, as shown by cats using dagger boards.
You guys rock. Thanks for sharing. I haven't been by for a while but this was suddenly at the top of my feed and I thought, "The Wynns!!! I remember, I _love_ these guys!"
I’m an armchair UA-cam sailor. For some reason I luv watching sailing channels and dreaming of living the life that you guys are living. For me I don’t think I could deal with being healed over all the time when on a lengthy passage. For that reason I would have to go with a catamaran and also having so much additional space. Damn I wish I hadn’t pissed so much money away in my younger years and saved more so I could afford to buy a cat and see the world. Maybe in my next life. 😢
so buy a Monohull if you want to sail and be safe(r) in rough weather, big waves and strong winds and buy a Catamaran when you are more planning of living in a huge area in the tropics and pray there is no hurricane? Cats have for sure more space but no, i just dont trust them on long hauls enough... thing is I actually never see a cat in the the North Sea or the Baltic sea but a lot here in Asia. Stay safe
im sorry you don't feel they are very stable. We feel they are very stable. The reason you don't see cats in the north sea orr baltic is because the marinas are not meant for cats. we have sailed over 10000nm in rough weather and big seas and run from hurricanes. Enjoy your monohull x
@@helenbell1715 I am just thinking and try to collect as many infos i can get Helen. I did not mean to offend any Cat-Owner. During the past days i am more and more convinced of this ships ;) happy sailing
In a nut shell, cats sail ON the water, mono’s sail IN the water. Cats are faster, more spacious, better to entertain on. Monos are cheaper to own, safer in heavy weather, and Point marginally higher. They also cost less. After a Cyclone/Hurricane, you may see monos washed up on beaches, but you don’t see them flipped upside down like a turtle on their back. Cats are faster, much more spacious and deep down, I think 98% of us mono owners have a deep secret fantasy of owning a nice cat one day...
Pretty much it. But when I get my nice cat, it will be when my heavy weather sailing is over. Also Cats have shallower drafts. Also I've heard that Cats are not good upwind - and the difference is more than marginal - but I don't have my own experience on Cats.
Hi I've been on a Catamaran before several years ago and prefer Catamarans as a passenger, long hauls are great as long as you don't mixed tides and lose a mast, and yet I'd ride again.I think catamarans will be the ride of the future.
I’m a fan of both your channels, and have really enjoyed this whole cat vs mono storyline. Re. The comment about ‘how much boat the engine is pushing through the water.’ Remember, cats tend to ride on top of the water, and monos go through the water. So even though you’re pushing 2 hulls instead of one, overall, I would imagine there is less surface area ‘in the water’, especially if you take into account the heavy keel. Also, regarding hauling a cat out for emergency repairs, if you get the right cat (daggerboards, etc) you can beach it. Lastly, I always feel like sailing in a mono is like 5 people living in a pup-tent on a hill. Whereas, a catamaran is more like a London apartment (flat). Obviously this is subjective, and not all monos are that small and claustrophobic, but you get the idea. Looking forward to part 2.
The two types of personalities displayed here. Type A Nicki and Nick lead the conversation and Type B Jason and Terysa follow occasionally. Interesting civil conversation. 😎
@@ericl1166 That's definitely possible. I have a suspicion that off camera, she's a real handful. I'm being as gentle as possible, but you probably get my drift ;)
Another aspect of the debate that seldom gets addressed is the issue of beaching. Very, very few cats seem to be built with beaching in mind, but a number of the shallow-/swing keel monos come equipped with twin rudders so the boat can be beached and dried out. Their Southerly is one such boat. On the cat side, boats such as the Maverick and Antares are both explicitly designed to enable beaching. I suspect your Leopard, with its skegged rudders and shaft drives, would beach just fine, even if it isn't expressly encouraged.
We have a cat in Thailand and haul out every year. The yard we use is too shallow for mono hulls. Mono hulls have to go up to the other end of the island. So in our case there are more yard who can haul out a cat (they haul out by trailer not a lift) and the price is more competitive. As for emergency haul out. There are plenty of tidal beaches or sand bars that you can beach a cat on and do maintenance or repairs that would be a lot more difficult to do on a mono hull. Great video as always. Lots of information to think about. Thank you for the hard work.
This may come up in the comfort discussion, but here is my take. I'm looking to buy a boat to cruise with when I retire in 1706 days. I'm looking specifically at mono halls. My plan is to single hand or sail with 1 additional crew. My issue with the catamaran is that there is too much room. My friends will want to come and stay, and stay, and stay..... You get the idea. I'm going to cruise to get away from everybody! As always, a great video! I really enjoy watching you two. I only started watching you when Nick and Terysa were posting their videos from being on board for a week. I've been following Yacht Ruby Rose for awhile now. Sail on, Rick
To put the money and maintenance thing into perspective when trying to convince my wife sailing is in our near future, I think I broke through to her when I explained that this winter alone, I have spent 60 hours removing snow from our driveway on our acreage, and the snow blower cost $23000. This process repeats itself every year with nothing to show for it except a road that can be used without getting stuck in the middle of it. (Canadian)
Lots of stuff to consider when taking off to sail around the globe. I would think durability of your vessel should be a major thought. Personally i would be sailing a dingy vause thats all i could afford lol yall have fun and stay safe
I guess the living at an angle conversation will be in the comfort video. Although I like the look of a monohull, the 2 engines and flat sailing surface (okay, semi flat sailing surface) would sell me on the cat. 🐈 And the trampoline. Because it is a great place to sit.
I'll throw in my two cents having spent time on both. If you plan on living on it with more than two people Catamaran is hands down the best option. More stable, faster cruise on sail and it's basically a floating condo, can't beat it, no monohull can compete. If you're going bigger than 55ft you can probably get away with either
When you come to New Zealand its is the South Island that is achingly beautiful - the North is lovely(just) the South is stunning. And I have lived in both.
I often ask myself why do I read, watch, listen to things that I know I will never use or apply and I always come up with the same answer. Knowledge / learning is like a Swiss Army Knife. Thank You Guys for adding to my cluttered mind. Cheers!!!

Cheers
Can't everyday be a Sunday with a new Wynns video? Great shots on the dive and the trip out of the atol! ....Wait, how did I get on this video???
Great discussion with Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose on marinas, haul out, and more!
Great! I'm a fan of both The WYnn's and SYRR so it was a great discussion to see and learn from. ALso, I loved the backdrop :) Life is good!
Yes! I already have seen all the Ruby/Wynns Videos on their channel. :-)
I like a Cat due to the comfort and space 😎. Nice vlog xxx
Great fun and info....I have been watching Ruby Rose ever since they visited you. Love their comparisons on cats.....so informative.
Excellent advice, comparisons and information. Thankyou so much guys for making this very informed video 👍💯😊
I really enjoyed this segment! Best wishes to both boats and especially the crews! Thank you!
My two favorite sailing channels, what a treat to see you all together! Happy to say I support both and enjoy all of your videos. Thanks for sharing
Even though I’ll most likely never go on a catamaran or a mono all around the world, it’s cool to learn more about boats
Probably the best cat vs mono discussion I have seen. Thank you.
GREAT TO SEE YOU TWO COUPLES TOGETHER- I HAVE WATCH THE RUBY ROSE VIDEOS
The Wynns are no longer in French Polynesia but I'm sure they'll bump into each other at some point. Just not literally we hope. :)
Curious Minion
480 is fine just happy to watch you guys do great work thanks
Finally Jason and the other chaps wife are trying to be apart of the conversation.
That sunset makes a nice backdrop.
Moorea was my favorite place I've ever cruised to. Like Heaven on Earth.
During the past days i am more and more convinced of this ships ;)
happy sailing
👌👍
fucking millennials and their catamarans. mono for life.
Finally! Been waiting forever! Good conversation!
No curse words needed - other than that it’s very informative... thanks for your hard work!
I have zero desire to own either one but found the discussion fascinating.
Great episode.. lots to consider.. haul out.. especially..
The two types of personalities displayed here. Type A Nicki and Nick lead the conversation and Type B Jason and Terysa follow occasionally. Interesting civil conversation. 😎
But Nick sometimes couldn't really start talking because all 3 others were so busy :D
Nick was clearly being deferential. He is an extremely intelligent, polite type A. There's no doubt about that.
All 4 are type A... Nicki just talks more than the others :)
@@Frindleeguy got the feeling Nikki didn't care for him much and he was biting his tongue. Which is unlike Nick.
@@ericl1166 That's definitely possible. I have a suspicion that off camera, she's a real handful. I'm being as gentle as possible, but you probably get my drift ;)
GREAT, GREAT, GREAT conversation! We watched Ruby Rose a few weeks ago aboard Curiosity and was glad to see you guys follow that up. Fair winds!
Great Discussion! Really good vibes tween you’s sailors.... Looking forward to Part II.
Hands down the two best sailing channels on youtube.
Hey, now that is interesting local info. Thanks for sharing!
Sail on,
Rick
😆
To put the money and maintenance thing into perspective when trying to convince my wife sailing is in our near future, I think I broke through to her when I explained that this winter alone, I have spent 60 hours removing snow from our driveway on our acreage, and the snow blower cost $23000. This process repeats itself every year with nothing to show for it except a road that can be used without getting stuck in the middle of it. (Canadian)
Great video guys. My wife and I are planning on becoming sailors this video really shows pros and cons, awesome job😁
i love this, so honest and fantastic lighting might I add!
With all the knowledge gleaned from excellent vlogs such as this there is no doubt that we'll be going cat with our 3 x cats!! Thanks guys!
What amazed me most was that y'all got through this conversation with (less than) one drink. ;) Talking always makes me thirsty.
Good comments. Two engines - one sailor big plus.
Suckage Zone ... LOL :D Kidding aside, this was one of the most enlightening episodes I've seen yet. I'm looking forward to Part 2.
Loved this vid, thanks guys, you have the best channel on you tube
❤❤❤
First time here, just subbed, due to Nick saying "this is the go-to for catamaran" comment. Thanks for the content!!
I love Niki as she always steals the show!!!!
