    Wife and I have been contemplating selling our house and property. We can afford to pay a boat off, and I am a disabled veteran so I can afford monthly fees and maintenance. It's your reviews that actually make sense that really help other humans. So many people review things and they know nothing about it. They just review what the counters and couches look like. Thank you for your content. It is really helping us guide our decisions for the next chapter of our lives.

      When you sell your house, don’t buy a trimaran, buy a catamaran. Trimaran’s are junk boats that don’t even have the room that a catamaran has and that’s strange because there’s a third hull. Watch some videos on catamarans then watch some on trimarans and you’ll see what I’m talking about, it boggles my mind, there’s an extra hull but doesn’t have the same room to move around as a catamaran does! I saw all that from my couch.

    I have been an UA-cam sailor for 4 years and I just came across you guys. You are the best I have met so far in English. I love watching both you and I am working on getting where you guys are.     Article from Life of sailing regarding tailing a winch:
    There are ways however to avoid having your hands and fingers sucked into a winch. That comes from how you hold the line. Grasping the line with your thumbs towards you and pulling hand over hand is the safest way to grasp a line. This keeps the finger that makes us human, the thumb, furthest away from danger and allows you drop the line in a hurry if things ever get out of hand.
    Invariably however, some people hold the line the wrong way and that is when tragedy strikes.

    Thank you for this big range of detailed informations. Comfortable way you are commenting. A big minus on the neel 47 is the quality of interiors. Too weak lockers and too hard and sharp edges. Don’t understand why Neel doesn’t change that and gets a bit more shippy as we say. Was nice to be on board with you. Greetings from Europe

    I was astonished how bad the Neel was going up and down through the waves moving upwind. I was also surprised to ear that ''normally'' a cruiser boat would navigate only 5 % of the time upwind. I am from a few decades experience as a beach catamaran sailor more regatta oriented, so used to upwind or downwind, rarely in between which is more risky with a sailboat with a high sail area/displacemnet ratio. Since a few years, I upgraded to a Corsair 760 Sport looking for a dryer sailing experinece without compromising too much about performance. So I am more from the school of thought that Light is Right and that when wind picks up i would rather sail upwind for comfort and safety which is only possible if your trimaran is heeling a little more, the lift is increasing from the ama that is in the water. So if you dive the nose of the boat a little more, you will slice better into the waves and the drift of the boat is reduced so boat speed is increased as well as control as you are slicing the excess wind too but weight must be more centered on the boat to lower the center of gravity. and reduce the drag of the hulls.

    That was fun and interesting. I know it would be difficult to address all the performance metrics to do a complete apples to apples comparison, but you guys did a great job of presenting many of the considerations in finding a boat.
    I probably haven’t been overly observant in previous episodes, but this time I found myself playing “where’s Waldo” during nick’s “drone” footage. The ten foot poll works remarkably well.

    Hello, one thing you missed is price tag.... Lol. I did like the review, lots of salient points. We have the Dragonfly 1200 and store our Honwave 420 cm dinghy on the nets while making way. For a serious crossing we can deflate the dinghy and store it in an ama. This does mean that we store our outboard engine on the stern and drop it onto the dinghy with a block and tackle system. Good Job! = Lori

    The neels are pretty deep drafted.. Are there any tris that are shallow drafted? We live in an area that is pretty shallow and would like the ability to get in close and beach if we so desire.

    Nice that you had the opportunity to actually sail on a Neel for a day to see what it's like. From everything I've seen/read, they seem to behave very much like catamarans, with the only minor differences being very slight improvement in upwind performance and a different main deck and sleeping quarters layout. Unlike other trimarans, where the amas are lifted a bit above the main center hull to allow for more heeling, the Neel's hulls are all level, which probably explains why it acts and feels so much like a catamaran. What would be interesting is seeing you get onto a Rapido 60 trimaran, hopefully with a stiff breeze to play with. Those things seem more like "true" trimarans, with ridiculous performance numbers to match. That's definitely a review I'd like to watch.

    Rhyming time with the O'Kelly's from Prime Cay. I have so enjoyed seeing your smiling faces once again my friends.
    The recent series you have done, plus this episode on the Trimaran was insightful for the differences between
    your Cat or your mono hull experiences. A You-Tube sailing channel that actually shows sailing in real time.
    What a novel concept approach that is these days among the U-Tuber channels out there .
    Another fine production by you all there Nick & Megan, brought a smile to my face this morning. Music, video content,
    interaction with the owners, the pro's & con's from your salon about this Trimaran experience once again shows
    why imo this is the best sailing channel out there. Well Done guys.
    Hmmm... Lewes, Del. on the transom. U don't say? Nice little beach town in the Mid-Atlantic region just say'n.
    We don't know about Trimaran's but.. we are gonna find out today that's for sure. Knowledge attended.
    The Neel is the real deal. It is Soooooo nice when someone else is doing "all" the work. Yeah pretty much.
    * One of my other long time sailing channels has returned to the Tube network that also made my week
    most enjoyable. If you get the chance check out their channel: Sail Cloudy Bay- HR54 that is on the hard in
    Harrington Harbor North marina in the Bay. I use to sail from Harrington Harbor south marina, back in the day.

    I did a fair bit of sailing in a hammerhead tri. I always found I was more susceptable to sea sickness in the outriggers / arma's. You would have to come in closer to the center and would feel better. I always assumed because you are getting more movement in the 3 axis and with out being able to directly judge a mono or a cat. My personal though on comfort would be sleeping in a center of a tri, > cat > mono > outriggers of a tri.
    The only other issue i have seen with tri's is that they try push the outriggers up and the boat is more heeling under anchor and if they get to high like on preformance tri's you actually start to get hull slap on the water. Seen this so bad on some on a particular boat they will have inner tubes with them to put under the outriggers and inflate them to lessen the a heel when at anchor
    And on the quality, neel seem to be hit and miss, had owners whose boats were perfect had others who where a year later still getting stuff repaired under warranty, ultimately you can only make a determination of the quality in whats presented to you

    Terrific. This is THE review I’ve been waiting for. Smart, articulate Catamaran people sailing a Neel.
    I made a couple of very narrow sea kayaks that needed outriggers so I’m sold on the trimaran concept. I just didn’t really know what the practical and effective difference was with catamarans. Now, I have a better understanding. Basically, quicker sailing, closer to the wind, but wetter.
    So, the Neels seem more for people on the _more sailing_ end of cruising, who really like to sail instead of people all the way on the other end who just want to change the view of their anchorage by going somewhere else. Cool.
    I agree, that dinghy might benefit from bow and stern (centered) tie downs. Those lines wrapped around the middle look like, yep, big seas might roll the dinghy inside those lines.
    One thing I’ve definitely learned about cruising sail boats: it’s almost impossible to get clear, definitive comparisons. The Outremer brochures don’t mention cruising speeds - but the Neel brochures do. So I guess the Neels must be faster.
    I look at the cruising guides and seasonal wind patterns and think, that sort of looks like a lot of people are all going between the same places at the same time...that might not be fun all the time.
    One thing that attracts me to the performance cats is being able to sail 5 knots in a 5 knot wind. I wonder in comparison how the Neels do. I just did the outboard part of my sailing lessons and... motors make a lot of noise. When you’re in a kayak the critters come to visit, but when there’s a motor around they scatter, so for me more sailing less motoring. Thanks so much for this video.

      Exactly. Agree. Believe it or not, Clarity will sneak up on 5 knots in 5 knots of breeze. Buttttttt......it’s got to be totally glassy. The performance boats can do the same in bumpier conditions.

    Its called a Dreadnaught bow. The future of yachting is green with electric propulsion (Oceanvolt) that recharges your batteries while underway, so a motor in each Ama would be a good solution, check out Salona 340E. Also extended angled bow rollers to clear the hull and make fitting the snubber would be an easy fix, maybe suggest it to the Manufacturer, not pleasant in heavy weather I'd expect. Also derrecks for the tender maybe, that would leave your sugar scoop available, or a hinged cradle off the stern to lift the tender. Just a few thoughts. I would have expected a lot more speed for 20 knots of wind??

    Thanks for a thoughful review. All boat types have advantages and disadvantages, though I'm struggling to think of many advantages for monohulls other than easier berthing (i.e. narrow berths are far more common than wide or end/side ties) and lower costs.
    Trimarans are generally more stable and therefore safer than catamarans, which in turn are more stable and safer than monohulls. Both are less likely to sink than monohulls. Trimaran is generally the most stable boat form.
    Most trimarans are more performance oriented than the Neel: Corsair, Farr, Farrier, Dragonfly, Marsaudon, etc. For even more performance biased, see the new Rapido trimarans, which are almost cruising racing boats. And of course there are pure racing trimarans converted to cruisers for even more performance and less comfort. And there are older more Polynesian inspired trimarans that are far slower but highly seaworthy. In any case, there are a wide range of interpretations of all boat types.
    The 28+ knot Rapido 60 is priced about the same as the magnificent and relatively fast Balance 526 catamaran.
    The Neel seems to be more like a variation on a cruising catamaran with the large single level saloon and master cabin on the deck level. It has some interesting design ideas. I'd personally be concerned about the well documented construction flaws of some Neels, such as the transom separating from the hull sides on some models. Presumably that's been corrected, but it's a legitimate concern that it even happened in the first place.
    The hobbyhorsing diagonal ride motion on less performance oriented catamarans is probably due to hull shape, as Nick noted, and more performance oriented trimarans may have a smoother ride upwind than the Neel, just as the Outremer catamaran has a smoother ride upwind due to finer hulls compared to more cruising oriented catamarans.
    Finer hulls with less flare or chine (straighter more vertical sides) may also be wetter since there's less to deflect waves and upward spray.
    The hulls of the Neel flare out relatively quickly above the water, resulting in relatively narrow and shallow tunnels. That suggests it would do better in flatter waters, though it does give more usable internal hull volume. Judging by the hull shapes alone, it may not be able to maintain higher speeds in higher seas, and 9 knots in 22 knots of wind, while faster than cruising cats and monohulls, isn't very fast.
    For comparison the Rapido 60 does far more than wind speed in a beam reach.

    You guys are such characters. A lifetime of weather reporting and riffs, and inside jokes, and maybe some dirty jokes to report the weather, actually makes for an engaging "weather report"...about yachts!
    If we are standing on dry land, we know as much about yachts as we know about the weather. And sometimes not even then. 😉
    I don't know if you guys would willingly tolerate the stress, but I hope a part of your "yacht consultancy" consists of inviting people to live aboard and experience the trials and joys of yacht life. There is a technical and physical and emotional aspect that I don't think most couples or families are prepared to handle. You guys are uniquely positioned to educate people about those factors before they commit.
    That may entail a literal bit of un-wished for marriage counseling, but....I didn't even know what a bowsprit was, before I started shoving my bow into a windward red-haired Irish wave, that was moving in a circular motion: downwind at the top, upwind at the bottom...you get the cut of my jib.

    I really enjoy your videos and I found this one quite interesting. There were only two cats that I considered, the Fountaine Pajot and the Sunreef but in the end I went with a monohull. As with any boat, go for what fits your plans and where you want to sail.

    the snubber also take the pressure off the windlass, but yes also centers the boat better as well. nice job you guys great detailed break down of the neel and comparisons.

    As always stock traders look at all the data available, assess the risks and benefits before making any assessments.
    There is plenty of data in the web regarding the speed and the comfort including the seesaw effect , both are influenced by the physics of vessel design including the sail area, weight, dimensions of the vessel but mainly but the length of the vessel

    The issue I found with those from Neel is that they have issues with quality. Seen several at boat shows that had cracks in the gelcoat, hardware that was broken / ripped out easily, screws not aligned or in a bad place, etc. Way too many small flaws that lead up to big issues when inspecting it up close.

      Huh, that wasn’t my experience. Looked the boat over very closely and didn’t see anything jump out at me. And spiderwebbing in gelcoat on multihulls is not unique to Neel. Our boat has some, and in my direct, first-hand experience with my own two eyes....Lagoons have them, Privilege has them in some spots here and there, Voyage has a couple areas but less so....gosh, even seen a bit on an Outremer. And while there definitely can be over stress areas in some designs, the most common cause of gelcoat cracking is too much gelcoat in the mould. And all this me saying the Neel appeared to me to be high quality....I got no skin in the game.

    We “raced” Vis on our 30 ft monohull just outside exuma land and sea park to Big Majors Spot a few weeks ago. We were motorsailing going 4.5 knots, and Vis quickly had our mouths gaping as it passed at 8.5 knts without the engine. Beautiful boat! Really cool we got to see it maybe it was you guys!

    Hey guys, love your channel! This episode was especially personal for me because I hung out with owners the day they bought their Neel-big shout out to our yacht broker Tommy Smith!-because I was partying at Tommy’s house just kicking off my boat purchase journey and they stopped by for a bit. I was fascinated with the Neel. But alas, I settled for a Leopard 48 (which I love!!!) and you are always welcome aboard if you’re ever in Key West where I keep her.

    Thanks for the video and review of the Neel 47. One reported advantage of a trimaran over cat is the ability to carry more weight with less hull displacement penalty and loss of speed - similar to a monohull. Do you have any information about that aspect with the Neel?

      Yes! I was just going to say that. Someone did a review at a boat show, and it was horrible, shotty craftmanship.

      Chronic problems actually, one time almost causing the demise of the crew due to faulty workmanship. Great concept but shoddy and unsafe.

      Well, the one we were on was solid. Can’t say much about the rest or maybe they are better now. They seem to do very well in the ARC. Do some googling.

    Lovely vid thx. If I saw correctly the Neel 51 seems to have entry to the other hulls from inside, so perhaps keep an eye out for one of those on your travels!

    Thank you for the review. A couple of things spring to mind. How constraining do you think it would be to find slipways that can handle a vessel over 25 ft in beam? Also do you think the outriggers would be suited to conversion for sewing rooms or workshops? Finally you didn't mention it but you need a bit more water just like in a mono which might be annoying at times.

    Great video, they keep getting better. I think there is a boat for everyone and for every type of cruising. I think you need to figure out what you want to do then narrow your search. Also, ask people with experience on what you want to do. I love your videos and plan on using your consulting options when I get closer to cruising in the Salt Life. Right now I thank my fortune for the being on the Great Lakes and work on my sailing skills.

    Nice review. Great salon layout, and ama's setup. Surprised the mention of one engine vs. two in a cat wasn't mentioned, for maneuverability and redundancy. Owner of a Simpson cat. :-)

    Great episode ! Enjoyed. The Neel looks great for lazy warm anchorages but Marinas can be a problem with manoeuvring with all that windage and also lifting out options more limited ! Also I agree that dinghy and transom look a bit exposed to heavy following seas. I want one though...(I spent so much time loitering at the Neel factory at La Rochelle - I think I was close to being reported).

    Very objective conversation & observations. Does the Neel pound upwind and what are your thoughts on catamaran bridge deck pounding vs the ride on a trimaran?

      Hmm. To be honest, would need to see it in a greater variety of conditions to give a really good report, but I’d say in smaller chop, the Neel is louder with less ama clearance than Clarity (nearly three feet) and it gets a whole lot more “slap.” In bigger chop/waves, you aren’t going to have that huge “bomb” sound when two waves crash up into the bridgedeck at once in the Neel.

    The compromise between mono hull, cat and trimaran is interesting. A mono hull will have the least amount of hull square inches compared to a cat and even more than a trimaran. The mono hull needs a keel and structure to handle it. The torque loadings on the cross beams of a cat and tri must be enormous going through a sea. It will be cool to see what trickles down from the foil designs coming out of the Vendee Globe, Americas cup and other development races to the leisure boat market.

    I would look into replacing the single engine with two jet pump engines and get rid of the screws on the trimaran. Great video, very informative.

    What about the beam of the Neel 47. Would this cost when having to go into a boat slip? In relation to that what about hauling out? The rig would have to know what they are doing or there could be problems.

    Hey! Yet another great informative video! I remember I've seen in one of your episodes you mentioning getting boat from Moorings. Can't remember though whether you said you would do it again or not.. I'm starting to search for my new to me monohull, and Moorings have few of them.. any advice would be greatly appreciated!

      Would boil it down to this. Buying out of Moorings CAN be an excellent value. I would encourage a buyer to use a buyer’s representative when dealing with the Moorings brokerage. Our experience was painful and we have heard mixed reviews from others...some good, some bad bad bad. I would do it again, but would use a buyer’s broker.

    The model matters, at least to me. The 51 solves a lot of the things you guys didn’t love. It’s also nice to here that you thought the build quality is good. It all depends on what you are comparing to. To me, compared to a lot of production cats, it’s really good. Compared to maybe a Balance or something that, well, you get what you pay for. The problem is, good luck picking up a used 51 for even what they sold for new 4 years ago. The 43 seems like an interesting option for a couple and more cruiser and less racer than the 47.

    Nick, love your channel, wife and I have been hooked for some time ...especially as we live in the outer banks of NC and tracked your movements when in close proximity. Wife was particularly interested in your simple and easy-to-understand explanation of shelf clouds. Both she and I would like more weather topic explanations similar to that as I am sure that all current and future sailors would gain immense knowledge from your vast experience in this weather field. Now to my specific question. Currently trapped on the Atlantic ICW in the Waccamaw River (at a marina that was under water the day I arrived) due to flooding from the Waccamaw and Little Pee Dee Rivers. USCG finally closed the AICW as the water was in excess of eight feet higher than normal (medium to tall masters could not transit under fixed bridges, and more specifically, they instituted significant transit restrictions as the wakes from any type of marine vessel caused further water intrusion into homes and businesses along a stretch of the channel from just north of Conway SC to several miles south of Wachesaw SC). Anyway, I need help. Can not wrap my head around water levels and stacked water bodies close together, yet different flood water elevations. The Socastee fixed and RR bridges are about 6 miles upriver from me. Since last Saturday I have noted the water level on the day marker 20 yards from my boat drop 12 to 14 inches. I call the Socestee Bridge operator daily for their bridge clearance readings. Todays reading was just over 2 feet better than my gage, in other words, their bridge clearance was about 3.5 to 4 feet better since Saturday than my 12-14 inches during the same period. Do not understand why the mathematical difference and could use your expertise in understanding. Bill and Jon Sv ANEVRLU

      Going to be straight up honest with you, this is way over my head. If you think meteorology is complicated, hydrology is 10x more so. You've got gravity waves, currents, basins, bathymetry, tidal effects, inflow, outflow, precip and tidal-bar effects...and it gives me a headache thinking of how the wind itself is affecting the whole thing. Long answer....I don't know. All I do know is that they close these waterways for good reason. The boat won't fare well in an encounter with a bridge. Be well, this too shall pass....

    i own the very first neel 45 , all in all i do agree with your assesment ,fun,wet and extremely easy to manage alone at sea...not so much in port. the 45 is a cutter so tacking isn’t easy. and it s an older design and philosophy than the 47. one point though..it s a tri one hull 2 amas not 2 hulls like a cat so no need for an anchor bridle on the amas.

      @@TheOKellys yes but the sprit came afterward...it wasn’t designed on the first 2 neel 45. i ´d say coming from 30+ years of monohulls that i still sail very much close to thewind and that the neel for me is less confortable than a cat..because we are going sliglthly faster and so hit waves faster. but all in all it s a sailor’s boat...tons of fun

      @@teknotikpointbiz sur le mien le bout dehors a été rajouté apres, au début il n’y avait que le davier inox. autre difference sur galene et a partir du. numéro 3 le winch a tribord sur le roof pour hisser la GV qui n’existe pas sur le mien. c est en pieds de mat ( sorry kelly’s had to revert back to french as i believe tek otik is from quebec and my english isn’t sail technical enough)

    Loved the review! The Neel is a great boat and loved the speed which kind of opens up new destinations and what a great shower! Internal helm was fabulous.
    Food for thought there and all things considered I personally still prefer the cat, mainly because of the wider hulls and the perfect level sailing.

    Interesting!------------was a bit surprised to find no comparison of side-wind forces on the rigging...............I expect that tris have no need for quite such severe triangulation of the spreaders...? giving better downwind boom angle to a following wind.......and also less severe jarring/wear and tear on the rigging generally. Because tris have a bit of heel and are not quite so rigidly set up, it seems they might absorb side-wind forces better..
    Am i wrong?---did you notice any/much difference?

    I took a very close look at the Neel before just committing to the Leopard 42. There is a new 43 Neel out that I considered but only one bathroom and really just one bedroom. Also with two dogs no way they would use the front of the boat between the spray and layout. Neel aft is just not a place you would hang out so I felt you lose space on the boat compared to the Leopards or other cats. I did get a change to talk with Joren who was a great guy and gave me lots of info. A few others have complained about craftsmanship/quality conreol on the Neels. There are a few youtube videos out there about the many issues folks have had with new boats that I hope they are taking care of. Looks like a blast to sail though but for dog owners it s not the best boat which is a small group of folks but probably children as well there might be issues.

      If I was in the market for a multi-hull and was looking at Neel I would not get the models smaller than the 51. The amas on the smaller Neels are way too narrow for my liking and not the most convenient to use being separate. On the 51, there's internal ama access and the amas are appreciably more spacious. It is a big boat though.

    The issue of Vis vs Clarity sailing upwind into chop and Clarity slowing down in waves has to do with the greater displacement/momentum of Vis and possibly aerodinamic foil of the amas. Also a tri has greater flotation with three hulls. You guys are just great!! I'll meet you in the Exhumas one of these days!!! Vasco.

    So how do gusts work on a catamaran? On a monohull, and it seems on a trimaran as well, gusts will cause the boat to heel which reduces the effective sailing area seen by the wind and at the same time heeling increases the keel's leverage. So we have an equilibrium of forces. On a catamaran, are you just pushed more sideways?
