I remember meeting Gaahl after Gorgoroth played a gig here in Ireland in 2005. I had turned 21 that weekend, and it was a pretty significant period of my life as my father had just been diagnosed with cancer. I ended up back at a local metal bar after the gig, chatting away with him, and remember being struck by how calm and affable he was. It was around the time a lot of eyes were on him in the media because of his assault charge and numerous other things, but he was very open and down to earth about it all, and wasn't taking any opportunities to dramatize any of it to his advantage. We went back to a party after that and drank some more beers, and I always remember that when we were parting ways he said that he hoped I had enjoyed my birthday and that my father would get well. An absolute gentleman. It's great to see him still going strong and pursuing what he loves. Gaahl - you're a hero!

I've spoken to him personally, about half a year ago. Backstage. Had a few beers. One of the kindest and most inviting men I've ever met, also very honest and he complemented my Judas Priest shirt:)
When the interviewer is knowledgeable of your art, and asks unique questions, artists seem to react much more real and interested to answer rather than the canned questions every single interviewer asks.

My thoughts exactly I'm sure be had to do research onngaal to see how he would respond to certain questions. He asked gaahl all the right ones.
I saw Gorgoroth live once. 2 things I remember:
- The bass was so loud that I literally felt like I was levitating and being massaged in my ribs because of its sound waves
- Gaahl stared at me for a long time, with his dark stoic face in corpsepaint

As an openly gay metal head, I love hearing him say that the metal community is one of the most accepting communities. This is also my experience, as a musician, bringing my boyfriend to shows. There was never an issue at a gig. No one thought twice about it. I was never judged....well until everyone found out that I'm a bass player. That's when I was judged, but understandably so. Basically I'm saying it's easier to be gay than to be a bassist in the metal community.

When the teachers of the course asked him what experience he had with prior jobs, he said he toured with Gorgoroth, hanging naked on a cross.. haha it was so funny

The interviewer had to do a good job otherwise Gaahl would have shut down.
Metal is about being yourself and giving the finger who those who tell you how to live. It's a way of life.
He truly is metal and more power to him. If this is what makes him happy so be it. Music and painting are his outlet and how he expresses his feelings and beliefs. May he continue to live his life his way. Can't wait to hear more music from him in the future.

Met him him walking through the crowd after he had finished a set. I shook his hand and thanked him for a great show. I wasn’t sure what to expect as he is an extremely intimidating figure but he shook my hand and humbly said “Thanks”. Nice guy and it is truly fascinating to hear him talk in interviews.

i think he has gone through enormous changes as a person in the last 20 years, but the interviewer is chilled so thats good. he actually finishes by saying so, which proves my point, but the interviewer does have silly hair, which is never would have been a good idea in the presence of old ghaal.

You can tell he really appreciated the professionalism and the knowledge the interviewer showed. He didn't ask generic questions. He asked very well thought out questions and did his research which made gaahl feel comfortable. Good job

That Vice interview is legendary because of Gaahl himself. I wonder if he is the same person he was then, but from his statements here I'm inclined to think that he might have changed to some extent, in the sense that he might have lost at least some of his misanthropy... Anyway, Gaahl is always a compelling presence, both on and off the stage.
The VICE interview had SOOOOO much fucking potential, and the only REAL part of the entire piece was GHAAL. I seriously hated the crew after it was over, But came to respect Ghaal a Hell of a lot more!!!!

I genuinely have to meet this man before I die one day. He carries himself with a very laidback humble manner which sets him far above most people. I'm stoked that he doesn't have that hey I'm famous and don't you forget it attitude. He's the type of guy you could just walk past him in the street or strike up a conversation in the line at the supermarket and he wouldn't bat an eyelid.
And the new album is really pleasing. It fits your ears and soul like a warm blanket in winter.

It is refreshing, and also satisfying to see such a well articulated and respectful interview. You can see Gaahl's easy going navigation being so confidently calm and calculated while staying authentic and in peace.
I was expecting a hot mess but Gaahl dropped the cheap drama and made a really good interveiw.

BLACK METAL GIRLS REACT TO PINK FLOYD
This video came to me on a strange day. After watching Lords of Chaos yesterday, I started to have doubts about one of the characters in the novel I'm writing. A gay death metal drummer. Perhaps he was not realistic? I was rethinking him.
Then I saw this interview, and I felt happy. I was in metal in the 80:s and 90:s (writer and guitarist in Ice Age), and even if there were homophobic jokes, nobody cared. Our singer was afraid to come out, but that was never about other people being negative, that was because she needed a little time.
Thanks for a very honest interview. I needed to hear those words today. I will not change my death metal character, he earned his way into the story!

Gaahl (Kristian Eivind Espedal) is very respectable as a true norwegian black metal icon and deserves to be honored, loved and revered in all the black metal scene, regardless of what you personally think about gays. even Faust (drummer of Emperor) who murdered a gay man, was actually the first to support Gaahl when he came out and was open about this. Gaahl is a quite cold person and does not give 0 fucks about what bitch-ass trollers have to say.
Nothing beats the Vice interview he did years ago, but I like listening to this weird man talk to any interviewer. He's like an alien... odd, and yet, intelligent.

If you haven't seen his art, it's worth a look. Somehow his paintings evoke the idea that he snatched an early 20th century expressionist vocabulary out of time and applied it to a postmodern feel. I'm not a black metal fan but It's definitely gripping to me, for several reasons. The crazy history and how it came to be and the depth of it, it's very easy for me to get lost in the different roads in it's bands and people. One of the biggest areas I pay attention to are the interviews. All the ones I've seen the musicians all come across as intelligent and thoughtful. The 2 I've watched the most are Gaahal and the other is the lead singer for Behemoth, both are always intelligent, engaging, respectful( if respect is given to them), interesting, easy to like, genuine, and I always want to hear more about them. I know of Gaahal's prison time but I really believe all they ask for is respect and thought.

Just because I am gay does not mean I am supposed to wear rainbow pride colored shirts and act all feminine. It really pisses me off when someone will actually argue with me and tell me I am not gay because again...I look straight. Not all gay guys/women dress or even act gay.
I have always been attracted to men and had feelings towards men but I love black metal. ...and old school Madonna as well. :) lol, had to throw her in there.
...but black metal is my favorite genre of all music.
But... none of these bands are black metal...

It's really tough being gay. When I was in college, I started being very supportive of a friend who really, REALLY likes men. People who hated me spread rumors about me being gay for going to his parties and even today I hear crazy stories about orgies that (sadly) never happened at my place. After a few years, pretty much all the gays in my area had came out of the close with me, but each and every single one of them thought he was alone. If only they had all been honest to each other!
If you're gay, come out ASAP. And if your family can't handle it, abandon them until they do.
Piggybacking your comment in case someone’s considering coming out: if you’re still living with unsupportive family don’t come out until you have somewhere to go. They might kick you out. As soon as you have a job and a place to live in don’t risk homelessness. After that, if they don’t want to be part of your life because you’re gay, you can tell them to kick rocks.

I love the new songs, sounds totally different from what he has done in the past. Great art he's making for everyone to enjoy.
Ghaal seems to actually be a down to earth kind of guy to me. I think he was honest in this interview and really open about his life. This is one of the best, if not the best interview I've seen with Ghaal. I was disappointed when he left Gorgoroth because I felt he gave the band a strong stage presence than what current line-up has. Since he's left, their music quality IMO has went down considerably and it's just not Gorgoroth to me. Also, as a straight man, Ghaal's coming out and admitting he's gay doesn't bother me whatsoever and for him to be who he is, to come out and openly admit his sexuality I'm sure was a difficult thing to do. Kudos to the guy for doing so. I look forward to hearing his latest work.
What a wonderfully respectful & open interview... It really is a nice change to see something that doesn't drag up the stereotypical ''satanic black metal'' questions. Seeing a genuine interest of Gaahl as a person & not just an image is just excellent. Bravo, Metal Injection!
If satanic black metal artists don't want to be asked about their aesthetic, then they shouldn't put so much effort into it. Black metal is very often just hipster bullshit. Having a real sense of humor about it is the only way to justify dressing up like KISS and growling into the mic.

Russia, for example, is a very homophobic country. Therefore, the metal community is quite homophobic. I’ve seen so many male comments that “Gaal is fag, now it’s disgusting to listen to Gorgoroth” or “Why Faust hasn’t killed him yet.” Some went further: “yes, this is disgusting, but it doesn’t affect the music, so it’s kind of a don’t care.” So the Russian metal community isn’t from the most open communities. So sad for Russians like me.

As soon as he asked him about his artwork & how it impacted himself and helped discover about himself; you can tell Gaahl was absolutely set-back due to how great of a personal question that was. Not many people would ask things like that.. typically just generic title-catching, stereotypical questions.

These days (2023) he is a daily feature in Bergen, as he has a space where he shows his art, and sells merch. Much like the interview, you will always find him with a glass of wine in his hand, but he is one of the most personable and approachable people to ever come out of the metal scene. He will chat for hours at a time, take pictures with fans, and offer autographs free of charge. As he is indeed one of the most popular figures in black metal, I’m sure he is visited by hundreds if not thousands of people a year, and asked 10 times that number of questions. Yet, he takes it all in stride and seems grateful, albeit humble, about his success and notoriety. Hail Gaahl.
This is exactly the content I need in my recommended during Pride month 👌 great interview - kudos for being chilled and just letting him talk at his own pace instead of cutting from soundbyte to soundbyte without giving him time to elaborate.
People can say whatever about Ghaal. In my opinion I don't care if he's gay or whatever but the man is true to himself; says things in your face and doesn't need approval from anyone, and that's what metal is all about.
I worked with him on the last tour with Wyrd at our venue in germany. He is a great guy tbh and very professional. Great interview with some very good questions!
