      its interesting because it seems like Fenriz is one of those guys who just got along with everyone, he was pals with Euro, dead, and Varg, never got into the drama, it seems. says a lot about his character, I think.

      Darkthrone is no where close to being the 'originator' of Black Metal. First Wave Black Metal bands such as Venom, Bathory, Celtic Frost and Hellhammer are the originators. Fenriz merely forged a more refined sound to the music.

    • @Metal-Possum
      @Metal-Possum 6 років тому +11

      There were prototypical heavy metal bands/songs before Black Sabbath. Helter Skelter by the Beatles is commonly referenced there. Mayhem probably were the tipping point for black metal being its own sound, but even Deathcrush wasn't there yet. Darkthrone came in with "black metal" a few years later once they'd given up their death metal sound to be more primitive, but by that point every other Norwegian metalhead was ready to jump on the bandwagon, so to speak.

Sure it's not the goal of the movement and it can be argued it never was (if there ever was such a thing as a "goal", which I would argue there wasn't), but a ton of bands embrace satanism and "satanic" imagery is probably one of the most essential parts of black metal.

    compression is a really interesting topic, and one that most metal heads don't understand. notice how every cd since 1995 seems louder? when they remaster a classic from the 80's or early 90's.... all they do is compress the fuck out of it and make it louder. they KILL the dynamics!!! there are no quiet parts... just loud loud loud... a brick wall of sound. that's fine if you want to mix it that way (e.g. Transylvanian Hunger) but mastering shouldn't squash the shit out of the recording. nice to hear that Fenriz is across it.

    • @sonnenrad8080
      @sonnenrad8080 7 років тому +21

      compression only affects the tracks that the compression is being applied to. Being that I'm an audio engineer I can tell you that you don't fully grasp how compression works. compression is very important in recording music, especially metal.

      I found this funny since all the newest Darkthrone albums are squashed to death with compressors and limiters.

    • @reficul1984
      @reficul1984 7 років тому +6

      Isaac Barton true but you don't have to have it. an it can mess the sound up if you don't know what you are doing. sometimes the raw sound is better.

    • @coldacre
      @coldacre 6 років тому +4

      @ Schutzstaffel - I'm referring to compression and limiting during the mastering process; not the recording / mixing stage prior to that. being a musician, I can see you don't fully grasp the difference between engineering and mastering ;)

    • @sonnenrad8080
      @sonnenrad8080 6 років тому +4

      Coldacre; First of all, in the mastering process, It's very common for mastering engineers to use multiband compression. It doesnt CHANGE the level of your song, thats what LIMITING AND NORMALIZING does, which is apart of the mastering process. You also have to understand that the reason shit has gotten louder over the years is due to demand at radio stations. once you give the radio station the final version of the song, they are going alter the wave forms, etc in order for the level to be correct for it to be broadcasted. Thats completely out of the hands of mixing and mastering engineers. Again, compression is extremely important woth recording, mixing, and mastering. The fact that you are confused about compression and limiting on tje mastering process tells me you know nothing about compression. Compression doesnt make shit louder. When you properly compress something, you attenuate the peaks of what youre compressing whilst bringing up the softer parts. It's all about dynamic control, not level adjustment. compression doesnt make shit louder, lol.

      Wat? they are among the harsher of the bunch. Bands like Burzum and Ulver have atmospheric / ambient parts, whereas Darkthrone and Mayhem are straight to the point BM with little to no variation.

    • @ekmad

      I think "easy to listen to" is due to the more groove-centric nature of Darkthrone. It's lineage is very Celtic Frost-y, the atmospheric stuff from Burzum for example can put people off I think.

That is why things like primitive art is more important now than it ever has been. We are human with natural highs and lows and don't forget that!
