The album that defined early Norwegian black metal - interview with Fenriz with English subtitles

- - We wanted the organic sound of the 70’s, while at the same time keeping it cold, says Fenriz from Dakthrone when describing the time when the album “A Blaze in the Northern Sky” was made. The album, released in 1992, inspired a wave of Norwegian black metal groups, which is still celebrated around the world. “A Blaze in the Northern Sky” is part of the exhibition Enlightened. Glimpses of a Norwegian Cultural History at the National Library of Norway.
Darthrone stopped playing concerts in the 1990’s, but is still regularly producing and releasing records.
This video feels like you just found Fenriz walking in the woods by coincidence and decided to interview him
yohohohhoho indeed
I assure you it was planned this way...he is after all the spokesman for "black metal"
That's because they did, that's what I'm choosing to believe
Can't wait to hear "Old-Growth Forest Preservation!" on the next Darkthrone album
you never heard eco-black metal? look up wolves in the throne room
@@MrMatsumoto0 well yeah, they went to school..in OLYMPIA ;D
That album will be called "Bevaring av gammelskog".
Fenriz is the cool metal older brother I never had
Dude is almos 50 and he hasn’t aged one year. God, the metal life stile keep your youthful days intact.
Anyway, I’m pretty sure Fenriz is the guy who rescues all the Norwegian kids that get lost while filming their amateur BM videos in the forest.
coz he sold his soul to Satan
@@kakolykia NO he sold his soul to Manilla Road :D
Well, not touring at all definetly help him not to be tired all the time 😅
@phantom yeah no drugs, groupies or American fast food!!!
I really hope I have hair like that at 50. :3
I still remember when I first hear Kaatharian Life Code, that last part made the hairs on my arm stick up,it was so badass. Blaze is a damn good album.
AGREE!
I remember being so confused when hearing the two different Darkthrones (one melodic death metal one black)
I remember first time hearing the opening. Goosebumps.
Even though I do not understand any Norwegian, I love to listen to their speech. Respect for his efforts to preserve the forests
When man merges with machine, Fenriz is the only human consciousness worthy of being preserved and surviving for all eternity. Fenriz is humanity's treasure.
Absolute chad
not a coincidence that Fenriz is the only person from the OG black metal scene that Varg thinks is a good guy
@@Iriscience Varg is idiot, this means nothing
Bark at the moon all you like. At the end of the day, you're still under the boot of your lesbian overlords. Muh Vikings forests!
@@Difficultfuckhead Peace be upon my lesbian overlords
One of most influential and most incredible personality in music ever!!!! Gylve called Fenriz, pure genius
That sound... pure magic. If only modern music, even the most complex and proggy one, could sound this way... to me the sound of early Led Zep and King Crimson, as well as Darkthrone of course, is still unparalleled. I can barely imagine how amazing bands like Tool or Kayo Dot would sound today if only they would record their music this way.
Can listen to Fenriz for hours
I love his connection to distorted guitar being like most or snow spray, a synesthesia-like thing where the onomatopoeic timbre is like a natural element
These guys are great. Love all the music I've heard. So far circle the wagons and old star are my favorite albums
Would be amazing to get a Fenriz interview as long as the one with Ted! love these guys.
He has already done a track by track commentary on A Blaze In The Northern Sky. Should be on UA-cam. Don't know why he hates the album so much, to me it's a 10/10 album. One of my favourite records of all time.
Fenriz looks like a really cool dude.
Yeeah, like Nikki Sixx or Lemmy or Chris Holmes!
He is
Its always interesting to Hear mr nagell ,
Preserve our forests,
Greetings to norway!,
I too loved when my Dad drove through puddles. The wave of water and the powerful rush of distorted white noise that came with it. That to me is Black Metal 🤘🏽
This guy is simply amazing.
And Darkthrone are the best Norway’s metal band since 30 years and more.
Why is he Amazing? Put aside owning the rights to kick ass band name
it's always great to see Fenriz.
thanks to him and DARKTHRONE I'm a big fan of Darkthrone & Black Metal bands.
as a Dutch guy I always wanted to learn the Norwegian language it's fascinating.
That background makes this interview just that much better
That background covers 39% of Norway.
Transylvanian Hunger was my first Darkthrone album. That is a masterpiece, IMO.
I love him. He’s such a cool guy.
Old Growths Foresaw Perversion
Nice song name Fen! Cant wait to hear it.🤘
Being Fenriz´s age and into Metal for at least the same years he is I can safely say that when I 1st purchased this LP it was the equivalent of listening to Celtic Frost´s "Morbid Tales " or/and Bathory´s "The return ". A milestone indeed. Title says it all.
JUST LOVE THIS MAN
The Album Cover is timelessly awesome so is the music
This man is incredibly chill
That AMEBIX shirt. I knew he has a great music taste.
Rock n roll gas staion!
I created a couple of playlists of Fenriz's non metal albums/artists that he recommended or talked about in various interviews. Amebix is part of it, but there is so much more, the man is a music nerd, and way more open minded than your average metalhead!
Here is the "punk" associated playlist; ua-cam.com/play/PLJr6Uuxf419Y4ww82H5tR5LM_UJpD2yxK.html
Jan Pospíšil - My thoughts exactly. And hell, any other cat(s) who seemingly dig the music of *Death Side / Sacrilege / Puke / GBH & Asta Kask* as much as a old fucker like myself does, always warrants the utmost respect in my books, as well. And most definitely *Fenriz* is no exception to that rule in that regard either.
@@why-why-whywhywhy asta kask sucks
"Its just Radka Toneff, for now, who sets a smaller ecological footprint than DarkThrone. And that is of course because she is deceased"
Hard to argue against that :D
Laughed before he came with the punchline, lol. Radka Toneff grew up in the same place that Darkthrone is from btw, Kolbotn.
@@Vingul Ah I did not know that. That is some cool information. Thx for sharing.
Haha, Im from Bulgaria and I have never heard of Radka Toneff before. Apparently her father is bulgarian
Hehe, he probably made that joke so he could mention a singer he likes.
Got it Fenriz ! Now let us all go and check the music she made ;)
Varg is probably seething in his dry toilet hearing Gylve say that lol. "My kids give my family a larger ecological footprint than him! DAMN IT, GYLVE! YOU WIN AGAIN!" hahaha
God damn i love fenriz. Even More now that i leaned that he likes amebix
for someone learning beginner norwegian, its very fun to watch fenriz's interviews and see how much i can recognise from the subtitles...
Get into radio Fenriz aswell, all in norwegian. shows.acast.com/radio-fenriz-pa-norsk
Same! How's it going now?
Love him even more after this.
what a beautiful unbiased interview.
4:45 big sunglasses not Emperor sunglasses
I was looking for this comment lol
big sunglasses cool band
kinda ZZ Top look))
The underground resistance is so epic! Im very glad I bought circle the wagons in 2010 and again in 2020 after I left the cd in my car when I sold it.
Fenriz is a Genius. Total respect
Fenriz and Nocturno Culto seem like they are the same age always.
maybe check photos from your old Darkthrone albums, or look at the covers of Isengard albums
They probably are. Bands typically form with classmates from, your school in Norway
Great interview! Thanks!
Fenriz is Best-riz
I haven't bought Darkthrone albums since Transylvanian Hunger, but I still love these guys - till the grave!
What a fantastic human being.
IN THE SHADOW OF THE HORNS
Thanks for this! Hail Fenriz!
Amebix t-shirt, Fenriz is awesome.
HELLHAMMER + AMEBIX + BATHORY = PANZERFAUST 🖤🪓💯
Wasn't a fan of Black Metal last year, but lately I've been getting into some of the first wave stuff, like Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer, and (early) Sodom, and I've been creeping ever closer to second wave like Darkthrone and Gorgoroth, so we'll see how it goes!
Three of the best things Norway has to offer, in their respective categories: Fenriz, Darkthrone, A Blaze In The Northern Sky.
he is such a great person!
Legendary album.
It would be pretty cool to walk through the forests with Fenriz
Love it, Beautiful .
Such a great album
Glad to hear that forest preservation thing
We are about to have a baby and are going to name him Fenris (with nods to this guy and also the wolf in norse mythology). The more i see and hear from Fenriz the more i like him, just seems like a really chilled dude.
Oh no. You use black metal to celebrate life? That's travesty! Unless you use it to corrupt life.
He has an Aria patch, that band is frickin awesome, it’s like Russian Iron Maiden, check them out if you haven’t
it's actually the favorite band of any drunken wannabe "metalhead" from russian countryside, but I don't blame Fenriz on this one lol
@@weaintfriendsweaintfriends7346 really? but aria does rule though
@@weaintfriendsweaintfriends7346 like Mortal Kombat here in Serbia, a band for “wannabe metalheads who think Slipknot are heavy” type of people
I know already
@@vladimircokorilo8105 I think Slipknot is heavy, Im just aware that there are more extreme stuff
remember, big sunglasses = cool band
damn Fenriz looking well nowadays
Well God damn this is a great video
I love this man.
I like to listen to him speak Norwegian. It's kinda ASMR to me😀
Love the amebix shirt nice to see good bands supporting eachother
Keep it alive ,,,,dark great one
Happy Birthday !!! \../
Transylvanian hunger gives me the shivers!
2:26 So the word to say "cold" in Norwegian sounds like "kvlt", now it makes more sense why we say "trve kvlt" :)
Depends on which meaning of 'cold' you're after. Cold as a noun is 'kulde' and sounds nothing like it, but cold as an adjective is 'kaldt' (or 'kald' depending on the gender of the noun it describes) and definitely sounds a lot like 'cult' now that you mention it. :)
@@skauert Damn i'm getting Norwegian lessons for free, thanks buddy :)
"cult" in Norwegian is "kult" as well btw.. though "kult" can also mean "cool", lol -- only pronounced with a longer "u"-sound. The more you know ;)
yeah I don't think that is why lol
"We" shouldn't be saying anything if its not understood as what it is. Makes you sound like a talking head poser.
God damn that newest darkthrone record rips.
Big sunglasses always big sunglasses cool band
how i love him!!!
Chillest guy of the 90s scene
This guy is the best
I just realized this is the first time I’ve heard Gylve in his native tongue. What a cool language.
Fenriz is the man
love that guy
Kul video, digger Fenriz
Нашивка Ария, это стремно товарищ Фэнриз...
он свободен...
04:45 big sun glasses allways cool
Cool АРИЯ patch on the back!
Nice, Amebix shirt!
Old growth forest preservation is very important.
3:02 Turbonegro is from Kolbotn as well.
THE dude.
One thing I really respect about Fenriz is he simply loves music rather then being a elitest or kvlt about it. I feel the same way about Darkthrone in general... Though every album by them has that dirty bite to it, it still sounds like Darkthrone regardless and they didn't care about being 100% pure. As fundamental as everyone says Darkthrone can be, I feel they are the best black metal band.
Its still my dream to play black metal in a forest, there's no Forest where I live
nice one Aria patch :D
FENRIZ OLD SCHOOL 🍺 DRUMS
This man seems to be wise.
Definitely wiser than the self proclaimed genius known as Varg the 🤡!!!!
Does anyone know the red/white patch in his neck? (4:42)
I love the sound of Norwegian, Norsk. . Is why I wanted to learn it. Progress is slow but I'm proud what I achieved, so far
I tried to ignore the subtitles as much as possible in order to try and understand as much as I can on my own. But damn, he can mumble quite a bit at times
Dont learn from these guys unless you want to scare people here shitless
@@thomasellingsen1755 Is it that bad? I just thought "Hm, that's a funny pronounciation he's got", but nothing more than that. But in that case, I'll just stick to my teacher's clean Oslo Bokmål
@@metalviking974 No I was half joking. When they speak they're average most of them. Just dont copy the growling 😄
That kinda made my night and I'm not even into blank metal.
I was promised English subtitles by the video's title
My favorite Dark Throne album is Transilvanian Hunger. Pure Darkness.
R.I.P Radka Toneff she commited suicide from sleeping pills ! she was a norwegian jazz player
With that long beard, sunglasses and hair tucked under the baseball cap, Fenriz looks more like a lumberjack than black metal legend. That is why I like Darkthrone. They don't give a f... about opinions and do what they love.
Yeah fenriz is amazing.
Big sunglasses, not emperor sunglasses
Lumberjacks love Black Metal. It sounds like a chainsaw.
@@donaldcady3839 American Black Metal sounds like a chainsaw running at full speed with a drum machine. The best Norwegian Black Metal bands is more melodic. Black Metal were never about playing as fast as possible. Real black metal is dark melodic music.
Anyone have any footage of this guy playing drums?
I've seen interviews with this guy and he spoke english
I would not have guessed any Black Metal album to be deemed culturally relevant by Norway.
Check out the computer video that was on the reissue cd

Skiing and blackmetal and deathmetal go very well together. But not so much with clouds of dust from sweeping.
