Great advice from Ed on approaching audio recording that's not filled with location recording headaches!

This is such good advice, and I definitely don't do this enough especially when your struggling to allocate time/budget to the right things to best benefit the video. Another wicked video man!!

Unless you have the SP3s to shoot the interviews - in that case - shoot the interviews!

We did this recently on a mini doc, great for a subject who might be nervous on camera. It made it much more relaxed. Similar I've tried to get out of the habit of doing two camera interviews especially when you know most of it will be covered with b-roll. the secondary angle often just becomes wasted storage space.
P.S These sorts of videos deserves so many more views on UA-cam compared to gear reviews. Really valuable info which can help a lot of filmmakers.

Yes exactly, I tend to shoot most of my interviews single cam these days unless I think a second angle can really add something, or the client requests it. As you often never use the second shot unless.
Re: videos like this yeah I mean my aim is to keep putting stuff like this out - they kinda bomb relative to the gear vids, but I'll keep making them!

Great advice, Ed! I think for shorter pieces (under 3 minutes or so) you can get away with that strategy beautifully! Especially when working in some portrait shots as you suggested.
Recently, I was facing more or less the exact opposite. I was doing an artist profile (a bit like yours about Terry) about a specific series of, let’s call them, "installations". But I had only access to 1 out of 3. The artist didn’t have any behind-the-scenes or in-the-progress footage apart from a couple of still images from the final pieces. So, I kinda had to rely on A-roll a good deal, otherwise it would have become an image slideshow with voice-over…

Yes I know that struggle! Yeah not sure you could sustain long form with this format but there's always exceptions.
Years ago we had chance to interview a bunch of astronauts but they were all over the world so we interviewed them over zoom and got them to record audio locally on their phones. I cut these together and laid them under footage taken from the ISS and the vid has got something like 160K views now, the project was still totally viable without the access to interview them.
It's the difference sometimes between making a project and not making a project.

Thx for this. This is quite useful so long as there is a single contributor on camera. It usually gets pretty confusing if there is more than one. Likewise its a narration rather than an interview and pretty standard documentary form. Its been the preferred form for many docs. Thx for the thought.

    • @EdProsser

It can work with multiple contributors but it's rarer. Have certainly worked on projects where we used audio interviews because we couldn't film with contributors.
In terms of narration, yes technically we would call it "narration" but typically in documentary film we use "voice over narration" which is scripted and recorded with an experienced VO artist - which takes time... your average contributor wouldn't be great at delivering a written script convincingly.
So the point I'm trying to make is not about providing voice over narration but using interview material in a different way - this is the point I try to make at the end of the vid with animation (where typically we would have scripted narration) - recording an interview will give you a more authentic result than delivering something scripted.

Totally agree Ed. I wouldn’t call this narration.
I’m about to start a film for an NHS arts in health project where I’m going to need to do some audio only interviews/contributions with some of the participants who don’t wish to be filmed. The priority is authenticity and sensitivity to the people involved so I’m going to need to go gentle and be creative.

Yeah sounds like it should work a treat! You could maybe even just clip on a lav mic and avoid holding a microphone entirely or place microphones on a table - which might help even more. Good luck with the project!
