Cover me when I run
Cover me through the fire
Something knocked me out ' the trees
Now I'm on my knees
Cover me, darling please
Monkey, monkey, monkey
Don't you know you're going to shock the monkey
Fox the fox
Rat on the rat
You can ape the ape
I know about that
There is one thing you must be sure of
I can't take any more
Darling, don't you monkey with the monkey
Monkey, monkey, monkey
Don't you know you're going to shock the monkey
Shock the monkey
Monkey, Wheels keep turning
Monkey, Something's burning
Monkey, Don't like it but I guess I'm learning
Shock! Shock! Shock! - watch the monkey get hurt, monkey
Shock! Shock! Shock! - watch the monkey get hurt, monkey
Cover me, when I sleep
Cover me, when I breathe
You throw your pearls before the swine
Make the monkey blind
Cover me, darling please
Monkey, monkey, monkey
Don't you know you're going to shock the monkey
Shock the monkey
Monkey, Too much at stake
Monkey, Ground beneath me shake
Monkey, And the news is breaking
Shock! Shock! Shock! - watch the monkey get hurt, monkey
Shock! Shock! Shock! - watch the monkey get hurt, monkey
Shock the monkey, shock the monkey
Shock the monkey, shock the monkey

I have a feeling this song is about to get really popular again
Seriously
LOL. 😆
I believe you are right!
I still maintain the lyrics are deeper than just the topical expressions. He claims this song is about jealousy, but ... what if "don't you monkey with the monkey" is actually referring to DNA manipulation and cloning? Only a few scant years later after this song, dolly the sheep was cloned. If we are to believe evolution actually occurred, then "something knocked me out the trees, now I'm on my knees" takes on new meaning as well.
Yep!!! Shocking!!
Happy 74th Birthday Peter Brian Gabriel 02/13/1950 in Surry, England.
A living legend in the progressive rock genre.
From Garden Wall to Genesis to his solo albums. Musical perfection.
Cheers Peter Brian and many more..
Thank you 🤗💕🇺🇸
His music has meant the world to me. Listen to SO over and over as a kid
We all love him.
Frankly Peter Gabriel was 10-20 years ahead of his time both visually and musically. These videos still stand up very well, even in 2023.
I’m listening to Peter Gabriel Shock The Monkey early February 2023
@@brandonmoore7497 I remember first hearing Shock the Monkey in the early 80's, still listening to it now and then in the 2020's - that says something! I really liked his Salisbury Hill and Modern Love back in the late 1970's and picked it up as a result. Really like Games with out Frontiers and the album it came off. Peter Gabriel is some sort of performer... 🙃
So true such a well put together song for its time..great jam definatly shocked the monkey.
It's a brilliant song. Too bad most people have no idea what it's about. It has a dual meaning. Gabriel says it's about jealousy, which it may be on the surface, but there's a deeper double meaning that is much more disturbing.
@@mysticaltyger2009 dual meanings, often like many good songs. :)
This song should be very relevant in today's society
I just wish modern musicians had the same level of originality and creativity. 80s bands didn't care what everyone else was doing. They did their own thing, and it made for a truly magical time in music history for those of us lucky enough to have experienced it.
Incredible era of music. These performers were truly and genuinely original with so many different musical genres contributing to 80s music.
Couldn’t have said it better myself maya 👏
I want to go back every day.
Lol. They harvested from those before them. Same as it always was. Though it does seem the music of youth has more "hold". Pretty sure the best band ever to exist, Rush, had a word or two. Lol. Oh and eff that one Phil song that 51 percenters love.
We are a truly blessed generation those of us who experienced the 80's.
Musically, this song does an amazing thing. Most of the song is just two chords - vi and V, changing from the minor chord very seldom. At two points it completes the downward progression to IV, but the majority of the song in just that one minor chord. This builds up a tremendous amount of tension. Then, at 3:16, the riff changes, adding harmonic motion, releasing the tension, and the effect is staggering. Despite its musical simplicity, this is a remarkably sophisticated song. It's a cliche to say they don't writer 'em like this anymore, but generally speaking, they don't. Frankly, they didn't write 'em like this back then, for the most part. The is the work of a great artist.
Wonderfully explained! The video is better than anything my brain could dream up for this song.
Very well said Darren. I am amazed with your wording and opinion of this creatively put together song.
@@JaneFrieman well, I've got to do something with that degree in music composition. It's not like I'm getting paid to compose lately...

100% in agreement
Gabriel's voice sits perfectly on the line between Tenor and Baritone, and causes a warbling, a strain that at times sounds so primal - like the howl of a wolf. I think that flexion adds an emotional quality that I find in many of his songs - as if he's 'reaching for it' - and as if he really 'means it.' It's a unique voice for sure. From Genesis to his solo work, his voice adds a definitive touch to the songs that would not be there if a different singer were singing the song.
NPR doesn't need any more music critics, thank you.
That beautiful reedy nature to that voice...you nailed it ! Keep posting away...love it.
Yes but what about the monkey?
You hit the nail on the head that truly is what his voice is like its awesome and unique!
i dont know shit about music, just know the way it makes me feel. you are very good at describing music.
I don't even know where to start with how talented Peter Gabriel is. His Music has a lot of meaning and creativeness to it. My other favorite song is "Games without Frontiers."

Peter was a musical visionary
you will never see music videos like this any more
This video, even more than "Sledgehammer," shows why Peter Gabriel was absolutely made for music videos. His songs are as visual as they are auditory, and his sensibility is so unique, a great song comes together with a fantastically confusing video that, despite being made when videos were in their infancy, comes across just as powerfully 30 years later as it did back then. Moreso, probably. He is the David Lynch of pop: idiosyncratic, brilliant, and totally catchy.
Bruce Jackson I fully agree
B. Jackson: You're right. And a wonderful writer too. (Wish I'd written that.) Thanks!
but late to the party but well said, rather than rephrase I will just like this comment :)
Fantastic five star video but I do think it tops Sledgehammer, Big Time, or Steam.
I haven’t seen this in decades. Totally agree, this hasn’t aged at all.
Peter Gabriel looks like a rebel even when wearing a suit.

That is quite strange, as he always wore one when he was at Charterhouse and he did look like a wee Lord...

I remember when Peter Gabriel said the song was about love and jealousy
and how jealousy can release our basic primal instincts. Not about an actual

the monkey is the addiction holding you down.

Peter Gabriel had to be a theater kid growing up because as elaborate as the video for 'Shock the Monkey' is I can't imagine any other artist putting up with the makeup, location changes and waiting probably necessary to pull it off.
Gabriel was the one of the most artistic recording stars of the 80s. Refused to write formula music. Experimented his entire career. Delivered 3 80s classics. Big Time, Sledgehammer & Shock The Monkey.

Peter Gabriel is an immensely underrated talent. He is a gifted artist.
Superb lyricist. People should go back to his Genesis days and listen to what that band could *really* do.
Underrated???? no way, walk the world.
underrated? what the? hes awesome and most people know it
I just realized he sang so many hits I love; I had no idea. His music is so diverse. He is my new favourite musician.
At this point he must of looked at his old band mates having massive commercial success and thought I want some of that so disappeared for a few years and comeback with Sledgehammer and the album So then bingo he had it.
A mad scientist of music. He takes forever to assemble an album bc he obsessively builds every sound, tries it 17 different ways, never stops trying to work in one more quirk.
To me, Shock the Monkey shows this at its height, in that moment that he and pop reached detente, by meeting halfway in MTV.
You know why Peter is such a profoundly intelligent artistic genius? Cuz he's not a delusional scientific materialist! that's why!
Had this song stuck in my head all day finally gonna listen to it.
Yes it's great

Song is so danceable, doesn’t matter what he’s singing about. Such a fun record.
Agreed. If only I could dance.
The 80's WERE danceable!!
A very subliminal description of the female beauty ...that it would incorrectly take feminists wrong
But a disturbing video.
Thing about Peter Gabriel is he’s talking about something profound.Genius!
Thankyou for helping us survive childhood with your wildness, certainly took our mind off it so we didn't have to ❤
I WILL NEVER GET TIRED OF THIS
Early days of MTV right here. I was 11 in 1982. My grandparents lived in Queens in NYC and had MTV, probably before the rest of the country. We used to go over to their old run down apartment and immediately turn on MTV. This was on in heavy rotation. My grandmother used to say, "He's such a good looking man, why did he do that to himself?"
Me too! NOW LOOK AT US! HA! Times change. Now we look scary.
That's so funny. I can relate.

Most music videos are simply a form of self promotion. Peter Gabriel turned it into art in its most pure and unsettling form.
Simply amazing, German version is awesome
He is such a badass. Compete talent that last decades.

Peter Gabriel is vastly underrated, IMHO. Quite weird around the edges, to be sure, but just raw emotion coming out there.

I don't see how he is underrated? He got plenty of recognition throughout his career and is a multimillionaire.
Nothing wrong with weird...Not enough of that in my opinion.

Buen tema me trae recuerdos innolvidables
yes there will be another musically creative decade or era, it's every era.
I agree with ricekevine1970. Not all but most of the newer music is terrible. The overuse of autotune and the fact that we now have 9,000 different music genres really have ruined my opinion of some music. I admire artists with talent, people who really can sing and don't need technology to make it sound good. Or artists that can create a signature sound, that when you hear it you can say to yourself thats so and so. Unfortunately ot seems like everyone just has a packaged sound that is too similar to everyone else.
Actually the 1970's had more variety in totality, but I agree with you to a point. The music of the 1980s was great up until 1987 where it pretty much died for me. Def Leopard, Hair bands, b52s and woose rock permeated 1987-1990. Just terrible!

Growing up in the 1980's amazing music, amazing times.
I consider this the video one of the greatest of the era.
I was a teen in the early 80s and think it was the beginning of the end for the music business. Madonna is a far relation of the Bush cult, as well a number of others. They used the void that happened then, and began to control it with technology, that culminated to down loading. Anyone that experienced the 1970s agrees.
A great video but then he up and did one better with Sledgehammer, arguably one of the top 3 videos of all time if not the best.

Gabriel at his finest.
Every time I watch this, I come back to the conclusion that 'Shock' is one of the best music videos of all time. For so many reasons: Sir Peter's unparalleled songwriting gift and the really fun way he treats a serious subject through creative allegory. The composition and execution of music that was unlike anything else we were hearing in 1982, including that killer drum line with its punchy gated reverb and what critics called "a relentlessly repeating hook," plus the eye-popping video production in a groundbreaking mini-movie directed by Brian Grant and highlighting Peter's own singing and acting with the African influences he was into at the time. The multi-dimensionally creative Artist Gabriel is an unsurpassed legend in our era of rock music -- clearly up there with McCartney and Page/Plant. Thank you, Peter. Shine on, sir. We need you still.
way more creative than McCartney or Plant. Gabriel is Bowie's nerdier cuisin.
With the new "outbreak" 🙄, this song is gonna get very popular.

The dancing floor lamps gave me shivers as a 12 year old child watching this video in 1982!!
The whole video is full of life changing imagery in the eyes of a young person.

It means exactly what you want it to mean.
Whenever I stumble upon this tune, it always sounds 'modern'. Gabriel was way ahead of his time .. incredible.
#genius
It's good but does sound incredibly dated
Larry Fast deserves a huge amount of credit for this song and for that whole era of Peter Gabriel's music. He was doing stuff with digital synthesis that is commonplace with today's computers (even today's *phones* can do digital synthesis that is vastly superior to what was generally available back then) but was just not available to musicians in the early 1980s. Check out his work under the name Synergy - it's not all that great musically but it really shows the sonic palette he had available to him. The fusion of his synthesizer abilities with Gabriel's songwriting really made some magic that still holds up today.
If it was ahead of his time, it would not have been a hit.
This is by far my favorite song of all time. Peter Gabriel is a genius of the highest order. This video truly does it justice, which is rare. His voice has been present in my life for over 40 years. There are two major voices that share this continuum in my life, Peter Gabriel and Paul Carrack. Their is something about their voices that resonates with me like no others can.
...and a wise decision to leave Genesis. Much better alone!
Digg deeper brother
Gabriel reaches deep down!! I had this favorite song on cassette, my "playlist" lol! Remember recording songs off the radio or albums!!!
i think freddy and billy joel do that for me very cool experience
This video was so far and above all music videos at the time that it blew me away as kid. I used to stay up late to watch Friday Night Videos to see this because we didn't have cable. I mean the commitment is brilliant including actually being in the water with a business suit. Unlike Bowie with his clown suit and obviously green screened for his epic video for Ashes to Ashes, which was the best video at the time.
Love him or not, Gabriel is a musical genius. Great song writer; a real wordsmith.
Easily one of the slickest pieces of modern music!!! But then...there is really SO much!! Who can categorize all of it???
Not so modern anymore. Still great, however.
This music video reminds me of Brazil (1985). Surreal and industrial.
One of Peter Gabriel's top 3 songs ever. This video should have way more views. This was an 80's dance club staple.
Yes, but it's so much more than that. Just really great musical composition, and Peter is a genius in everything from songwriting to performing and his sense of the important visual elements for his songs.

Gabriel did some trippy stuff in the day! ..
BESIDES the fact that the song, and vid are absolutely amazing, and regardless that Gabriel has stated it's a song about "jealously", it's way too layered with emotional content, meaning and images that evoke so much more. It runs the gamut from the sad fact of using/abusing lab animals for our sole benefit to modern humanity's isolation from Nature. "Cover me, when I sleep... cover me, when I breathe... you throw your pearls before the swine, make the monkey blind... darling please, cover me". Peter gets so primal... so powerful... illuminating the (dark?) core of whatever it is to be: human.
