I remember seeing Biko on tv when he was still alive. What a strong personality full of hope. What a shock him being murdered was. This song was important to get world support to help end Apartheid. Therefore I'm truly shocked to read how some people react. Whatever is wrong now, in SA is not Biko's doing, nor of the integrity Mandela brought to the stage, nor of their ideology. . Whatever corruption hurts SA today, is a new day and new case. It won't be solved by hate against a color or ideology. Power corrupts. All countries need leaders with integrity. And people like Biko and Mandela lived that. And for that they get songs made about them. So you want change? Live a life that gets you songs made about you. And that only happens when you touch most of humanity in a way that shows humanity. (first to check my skin colour to see how they'll respond loses 200 points)
People who have sought peace in violent times, usually get gunned down. MLK was one that you first think of. Biko should be remembered for going against the grain for his country's sake in the throes of corruption. Still, racism is something that you're born into, doesn't belong here, but thrives. R.I.P. This part of history is ignored by many and is rarely ever mentioned in high school textbooks. You can't bring out the black's perspective if one unexperienced; misunderstood is writing.
Another commenter made the greatest observation: Hate killed Biko, but love keeps him alive. That would apply to all pacifists/humanitarians who were murdered working for peace/a better way.
I once heard that "when the heart speaks, the heart hears and believes." This song has incredible power all these years. TRUELY moving. Peter Gabriel has a magnificent way of telling stories with his lyrics. I love his music. Biko is a favorite forever.
Still makes me cry every time I hear this song 😭 RIP Steven Biko, we still remember you and your sacrifice to help bring down apartheid ✊ from NH in the USA
I think that most who live in America who claim "African-American" have no clue about this man's sacrifice. It's a tragic loss in history . I'm Native American Indian and believe you should know all you can about your past elders. Learn the truth not what the government teaches you !!
Public and private schools taught many of us about the suffering of the American Indian. The entertainment industry brought 'Biko' to my education. My wanting to know more sent me to the public library, bookstore and I thirst more knowledge. So many deaths for freedom. So many we never knew about. I was 12 living in Scotland first time I heard this song and learned about Steve Biko around the same time as Bobby Sands...leaves a lump in your throat those were powerful times.
Saw Peter play this song with Tracy Chapman Sting Bruce Springsteen and 175,000 people in mid 1980 in Philadelphia USA, was the turning point of my life. Was so amazing and made me realize I am a person of the planet earth, not only American.
This was an absolute life changing song for me, 1980 age 22 and realised that music could make a difference, I had been aware of Biko's death in 77, but this song told the world.

This song is from so long ago.. Stephen Biko you are not forgotten and you did not die in vain. Thank you Peter Gabriel for your artistic genius. Sadly, I feel the reason I couldn't stop hearing this song in my head and had to look it up is because America is looking alot like South Africa these days... Don't you worry Mr. Biko, we got souljas here that will stand. as long as I got 2 legs I can stand. Only love can conquer hate
I can't answer this.... The I AM is giving permission for this. We must always remember from great men like him that we are co-creators in our reality. 1 person absolutely can change the world. If you have 2 legs, stand
as an artist, I always pray that I will be ready with the skills at the right moment to make a poster, a painting, something to encourage people to keep fighting and not give up. The genius of Peter Gabriel is, without this song, alot of us western kids might never heard of Biko. And he packed the story in the lyrics too!
I was with you until you made the comment about the US looking like Aparteid era SA. That was stupid. Yes, we have racism, but to say we have legalized racism where minorities can be brutalized with no consequences for the perpetrator is an absolute lie. Unfortunately, pseudo-movements like BLM has cultivated a following based on lies and bogus propaganda.
I heard this song for the first time back in 1985. I touched my 4 year old heart from back then.. I didn't know why I felt the way I did. Almost 40 years later I still feel the same impact everytime I hear or watch this video. Everytime.. everytime.
A song that puts chills down my spine and a tear in my eye. For godsake let everyone see the film and do not let the apocolypse of WW2 South Africa be repeated forever more as it is now in Africa and Syria.

Governments don't need a conscience for non violence to work because the world is still watching. The most powerful and bravest soldiers are always the non violent. You will never get more commitment than from the non violent soldier who is will to die instead of kill for what is right.

I love Peter Gabriel's music, voice and the thoughts his songs convey. This is one of my favorites, about Steven Biko who was a non-violent activist before Apartheid was finally a thing of the past. Cry Freedom was a brilliant movie about Biko and this song was written for him.
I was impressed when listening to this song since I had not heard it before, I have it in my head these hours it has produced a very strong emotion and it hurts the situation lived in South Africa and I join that pain of all those people who mourned the death of Steven Biko .... thanks Peter Grabriel for your simplicity you have impressed me .....

It's about the farthest thing you can get from underrated. Only youth or pure ignorance could make such a stupid comment. The tune helped turn the eyes of the WORLD on South Africa and was an anti apartheid anthem. How is that in any way shape or form considered "underrated"? That word is probably the # 1 misused word to describe thousands of songs on UA-cam by people who no clue of music history. Google is your friend
I love PG - and this will become his ONLY song, in terms of what it says , what it has already achieved and what it might yet still achieve ... he won't do it - but he should re-release it ... and raise fresh awareness to the HORROR SHOW that still goes on in 2020 .... 43 years after the death of the great man SB
As one who was 16 when Steven died, this song was NOT under-rated at all, the western radio stations around the world didn't want to play it. There is a difference younguns.

Therefore I'm truly shocked to read how some people react. Whatever is wrong now, in SA
is not Biko's doing, nor of the integrity Mandela brought to the stage, nor of their ideology.
When they can do this to a man who advocated peace they could do it to anyone. RIP Steve Biko. And every other person who has died for peace.
So be it! For the sake of humankind!
When they can't control you with their violence and hatred, they hate you even more. Never stop trying to change the world with non violence.
Another commenter made the greatest observation: Hate killed Biko, but love keeps him alive. That would apply to all pacifists/humanitarians who were murdered working for peace/a better way.

Thank you for teaching me about Steve Biko when no one else would.
I read the books and I watched the movie, plus all the reporting being done about apartheid in general.
I once heard that "when the heart speaks, the heart hears and believes." This song has incredible power all these years. TRUELY moving. Peter Gabriel has a magnificent way of telling stories with his lyrics. I love his music. Biko is a favorite forever.
Dieses Lied begleitet mich seit über 30 Jahren. Das ❤️ spricht,hört und glaubt!!! Dankeschön Peter Gabriel
Was at the amnesty international Wembley gig in 88 when he performed this. Brilliant.
Ditto.... I went for Mr Gabriel's performance. Still got the tee shirt and the amnesty booklet of human rights.
Every time i heard this song i must cry because its beautiful. The story behind the songs.. Truth
Neddskorg, South Africa is still very racist. It's mostly the white who are rich and in economic control. Everybody is not Mandela or Biko.
I cry too!!

Why no song for the poor blacks who died with a Mandela flaming tyre around their necks?
He's racist's against whites, a white actor's career would be over with this asshole rich twit acting as poor Biko, he'd turn in his grave having a rich twit racist representing everything he fought against disgusting rip Steven biko

In memory of Steven Biko and Nelson Mandela forever in my mind
His voice is amazing. This effortless surge of immeasurable strength and power.
His passion and anger are palatable. Thus, making the song align with your astute comment.
I cant help but cry when I hear this as a South African citizen
Whose here in 2024 and for eternity songs Biko and asimbonanga always lingers in thoughts and be a sign of encouragement in days of hardship ! Long live ancient azani tha I love so much Freedom is coming tomorrow ❤

They murdered BIKO But His Spirit Shall Live Forever On
And its stays the same. Godverdommo

Peter Gabriel is a very courageous and powerful artist! This song had to be made!!! I can't imagine being beaten to death!! Basically murdered by police in their custody!! Patrice Lumumba, George Floyd, Rodney King, and Stephen Biko, Nelson Mandela Rest in Justice!!
We have not forgotten the atrocities committed against all of you by the corrupt, cowardly police/military!!! In 2020, really nothing has changed!!
BUT, THE FIGHT AND STRUGGLE CONTINUES!!
They are so stupid. By doing their stupid actions, they created a martyr. They will go to HELL for their actions.

A song I grew up with because of my amazing parents. Still brings me to tears
@Glamore Beauty Bar Peter Gabriel Biko is of my favorite song
Always found this song powerful. Came into my head with events of recent weeks. I see others are finding the same connections. "The eyes of the world are watching now".
I was 12 living in Scotland first time I heard this song and learned about Steve Biko around the same time as Bobby Sands...leaves a lump in your throat those were powerful times.
God rest them both
Just been to the concert, this song is still so powerful after nearly 40 years ❤❤❤
Saw Peter play this song with Tracy Chapman Sting Bruce Springsteen and 175,000 people in mid 1980 in Philadelphia USA, was the turning point of my life. Was so amazing and made me realize I am a person of the planet earth, not only American.
Lucky you did!

REMEMBERING STEVEN BIKO 💯
I remember the effect this song had on me in my late teens and still brings a tear to my eye the way the most beautiful and powerful works of art do,.Greatest protest song ever and to this day I get a kick out of sharing it with new generations of music lovers who are also blown away by it .
I came from a country where police brutality is rampant, Argentina, so this song moves me, too.
Was just thinking this.
Your right. But then why is South Africa worse off than ever? It's bleeding rich whites.
Such a powerful song that will echo thru the ages
We need more like this that will stand for what is right no matter what the cost.
Peter Gabriel was threatened for this song.
Saw him twice in the 80's, and he closed both shows with this song, and it's still so powerful .
I heard this song for the first time back in 1985.
I touched my 4 year old heart from back then.. I didn't know why I felt the way I did. Almost 40 years later I still feel the same impact everytime I hear or watch this video. Everytime.. everytime.
This song give me goosebumps every time. Eternal song for justice
A song that puts chills down my spine and a tear in my eye. For godsake let everyone see the film and do not let the apocolypse of WW2 South Africa be repeated forever more as it is now in Africa and Syria.
I am feeling the same!
2024 and it still delivers the message and power!! Peter Gabriel what an incredible musician you truly are!!!

janesgems7 USA was obtained through violence. We were escaping England's tyranny and being tyrannical towards the native Americans at the same time. Picked the wrong example.

Such an Underrated song in Gabriel's Career.
defo underrated
It's about the farthest thing you can get from underrated. Only youth or pure ignorance could make such a stupid comment. The tune helped turn the eyes of the WORLD on South Africa and was an anti apartheid anthem. How is that in any way shape or form considered "underrated"? That word is probably the # 1 misused word to describe thousands of songs on UA-cam by people who no clue of music history. Google is your friend
@Brandon Moore….you're an idiot too then
I love PG - and this will become his ONLY song, in terms of what it says , what it has already achieved and what it might yet still achieve ... he won't do it - but he should re-release it ... and raise fresh awareness to the HORROR SHOW that still goes on in 2020 .... 43 years after the death of the great man SB
