I am a partially disabled combat veteran of the US Navy and my great great grandfather was in that fort that night. He survived that night and his account is still told among my family members today. He fought Britain then. But, his grandson, my grandfather, landed on Omaha beach on D-Day in WW2 to defend Britain. We fought our mother country for our independence. But, we never lost our love for our brothers and sisters in Britain.

Sounds like great history in your family I come from a family of veterans my dad's brother Uncle Ivan killed in 1950 in Korea on a retreat when the Chinese got involved he was only 19 my mom got three brothers went to Vietnam two of them were killed in 66 and 67 her only brother he made it back he was with the Marines first division my brother got three sons and they're with the 10th Mountain went to Afghanistan each of them did four deployments sister two of her sons Iraq two deployment each my daughter deployed to Iraq one tour my two sons five deployments in Afghanistan each they pissed me off when they kept going back

Fact: That very flag still exists. It is on permanent display in the Smithsonian American History Museum in Washington, D.C.

I have seen it and it has the holes and tatters of being in combat. I have also seen fort McHenry from inside and leaving and entering Baltimore Harbor. Today a replica still flys from the flagpole. It still dominates the entrance to the harbor. Today, I think we still have a “special relationship” with the UK or Britain as most Americans would say. In recent times that was best examples between the relationship between Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Regan. However, it was really us joining with the UK and France in WW1 that first reunited us as Allie’s. In 2014 the US Mint issued a coin commemorating the event.

I have to say that the Late Queen of England ordered her band to play our national anthem on September 13th 2001 after we lost the World Trade Center to terrorists, The terrorists did not win. The immense crowd around Buckingham Palace were singing along with the Queen's Band and crying, this shows how far us two nations came together. I still watch that video and cry, I served in the United States Air Force, I had to bury a fellow airman way too early, it is then that I fully understood the meaning of the flag and the anthem. My Grandfather was born in England in 1905 and Immigrated to the United States!! I love both countries, thank for for supporting my country during a bad moment, it means far more than words can convey!!
30+ Years in the Military and it never gets old. It's not a blame song by any means. It's a song of what made this county. We will always be friends and brothers in arms.
When people from other countries ask why so many Americans fly flags outside their homes, I point them to this video. This was a great reaction. Thank you.

The video is completely fake. Only 4 Americans died at the Battle of Fort McHenry...they do not even get the name of the fort right.
A lot of British people think we don’t know the meaning of this song but they teach it to you in school and everyday of school we stood said the pledge and sang the national anthem. It means more than you think it does to us

Our kids sing it every morning in school. We are a nation of crazy brave people, because we had to be. Everytime I see a veteran or a soldier, I thank them for their service and sacrifices. We hold our Anthem close to our hearts.
EVERYONE OF US!!! 😂 Everytime I watch this from a different reactor I put my hand over my heart. It’s second nature. No matter how many times I hear our anthem I still get goosebumps!!!
You know there are very few countries that that has a civilian salute for their flag. We overwhelmingly fly our flag from private residents and businesses more than any other country. I have spoken to many international visitors who quickly notice that they see US flags all over. They also usually mention that and where to buy a soda and get free refills. That too, is rare in Europe.

I think it is hard because Britain and Americans (among others) have died on their feet to preserve freedom. Our countries are so close that we see ourselves in each other. We will continue to fight and die for each other.

That EXACT flag IS in Washington DC in a museum. And the words are from our history not made up . This is just one of the reasons we are passionate about our flag and national anthem! FACT!
The one in DC was the larger one the raised the next day. The flag that flew that night was lost. The video was a complete fake. The flag was not knocked down, only 4 Americans died.
I am sitting here with tears rolling down my face and singing this beautiful song.
I’m not even American but have a DEEP love and respect of the American story and have since I were young. I have watched many reactions to the short video and have tears welling in my eyes throughout.

We wanted the freedom to think our own thoughts, and not be told how to live, or what to believe. We have so much love for that flag because so many of our brothers and sisters died for those colors. Outmanned, and outgunned for so long. Yet we still found a way to pull through. Even impressed france when we went up against insurmountable odds in the revolutionary war.

I wouldn't trust Wikipedia for definite facts on number of persons that died. Too often they are in error. The story is still there though. Francis Scott Key- National Museum of American History. I am a proud American and willing to die for God, Country and Family and in that order. We also sing the Star Spangled Banner in Church. Thank you so much for reacting to this, and I adore the respect you gave. Would love to watch a history of the Brits National Anthem if one is available that you ae aware of. I have looked for one but to no avail. My deepest condolences to the UK for the loss of a great Queen, Elizabeth. Be at peace and bless our allies!
Unfortunately, just a story that is made up.
According to Wikipedia 4 Americans were killed and 24 wounded and on the British side one crew member wounded. On the morning of Sept'14 (the next day) the storm flag was lowered and replaced by a larger garrison flag which signaled the American victory. the British had exhausted all their ammunition and were not able to penetrate Baltimore harbor defenses.
@@TheJuan72 to be honest I would actually go for like an older Britannia it's like a pedia because that would have better insight than Wikipedia because people can go in and edit out wikipedia and it happens quite often in a bunch of people's pages and stuff like that so Wikipedia is not something to trust sorry a Britannia would definitely be better if you can get a hold of those check out one of the libraries or something like that because those guys are have information about almost everything.

Francis Scott Key documented this whole night. From these notes and sights he penned this song.
He wrote a poem, not a song. Someone else made it into a song.
This is why the Flag is not allowed to touch the ground to this day .
That’s why our flag is never supposed to touch the ground. Anyone who picks up the colors in battle is willing to die for it. And another picks it up. 🇺🇸

This American puts his hand over his heart, or salutes every time this song is played. This song defines us as a nation, and the price we are willing to pay for freedom.

Some believe as you do, but my Dad and I both served in the Air force, I've had two brothers, a step-dad and a brother in law that were Army and my niece is Navy. I've known hundreds of active or former enlisted, but I never heard one of them say that it is disrespectful for a civilian to salute the flag.
Most Americans know every word. We sing it all the time. At most schools we pledge alliance to the flag every morning. Yes, I sang it with my right hand over my heart....Very proud American here & I love your channel. Thanks for taking us on your journey...

i know all the words because we used to stand up in school every morning place our hands on our hearts and sing it to the flag. i think that being removed has affected national pride in some ways but that's why i know it, idk if younger generations do know it that well!

Thanks, guys, for reacting to this story about our flag. Francis Scott Key did, in fact, compose the song. The way the story was told to us is something that was very new to most Americans. In school we learned about Francis Scott Key and The Star Spangled Banner but never the details as was presented here. If anyone questions the accuracy of the story, when he or she listens to the lyrics of our National Anthem they can now understand what some of the words and phrases are describing.
Both of you were very gracious with your remarks and I would like to end my comment on a positive note by saying that with all the tyrants in the world posing threats to liberty and peace for mankind I know that the Brits and American's will always stand together with other peaceful Countries around the world to fend off any threats from evil empires by employing the same motivations and love of Country as the Ukrainians are doing right now.

But, there is no question, the lyrics to the 'song' give validation to what occurred during that period of time. I believe most of us understand what the purpose was to tell us the story, mainly our devotion to the flag. Stretching the truth, although not something to acknowledge as "okay", could be pardoned by many.
However, I do agree with you, presenting an inaccurate account of what happened is not something to be learned in a classroom.

My Old man taught me this story about our National Anthem when I was a boy. I served almost 11 years in the United States Marines....I was medically retired in 2004. I will tell you, that EVERY time I hear the Star Spangled Banner...there is a powerful, emotional response. We are THE LAND OF THE FREE BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE. Happy New Year gents.

@@josefhyatt2780 Yes it is, but the video is about the Battle of "Fort Henry". The makers could not even be bothered to get the name of the fort right. 4 Americans died. The flag never fell. There was 1 American prisoner. Key never went to the fort after the battle. There were 50 British Ships. The Fort was an important military target. It was during the War of 1812, so the narrator talking about the colonies makes no sense at all. There is so much embellishment that this story is historical fiction.
As a US Marine and have worked with British troops I have nothing but respect for them. True warriors. That flag was shredded but is still in able to be seen at the Smithsonian.
Oh and it was a poem before it was a song. This story and song still make me emotional.
Remember these men were mostly British themselves.

This is why we have so much respect for our flag and it’s supposed to never ever be on the ground, for this reason. Fun fact, there is a depiction of men holding the flag up with the patriots bodies on the ground, and after 911 happened here in America. There were firefighters and police men putting a flag that was on a pole on top of all the rubble when the towers fell in New York. There was a photo of those men holding it the same way, later on it was put side by side, the old and the new. The photo of them doing that right after after 911, during the first days or weeks after was not done on purpose, it was a beautiful and heart wrenching thing to see. Every country has its terrible moments, but it’s what we do to fix it, that matters the most.
Little known fact. There has been a long tradition in the US of not allowing pictures of living people to appear on money or stamps. The photo of those first responders has been one of the very few exceptions.
No matter how matter how many times I hear this story I cry every time!

I knew this song word for word when i was just in elementary school. I'm 66 yrs old. It seems like our kids are dumbed down these days and history is being forgotten in this generation. Our kids may be computer savvy7 , but they are so ignorant about things that really matter.
Just to correct you, with utmost respect, the flag has just 13 stripes for the thirteen colonies.

They were referring to the flag at Fort McHenry. That flag did have 15 stars and 15 stripes. In the early days of the nation, that was the procedure. As more states were admitted to the union, it was realized that adding stripes as well as stars would soon make the flag very unwieldy. So the original colonies/states are the only ones honored with both Stars and Stripes.

But it gives a sense of the spirit that was a part of the early United States ... people from many parts of the world who yearned to be free. I fly a American flag every day in Texas. Just like my late father did. I'm a retired welder from the Houston area.
It really is hard to imagine a time when we weren't friends. These days our two countries are pretty inseparable. It's sad that it took two world wars for it to happen though
Our friendship goes back a little further than WW1. It really started in 1854 with the recovery of England's ship the HMS Resolute. It was ice locked in the north atlantic and had to be abandoned. Some of our whaling ships found it, Congress saw fit to have it refitted and sent back to England as a matter of national courtesy. in 1879 British government had three pieces of furniture made from the timbers of that ship when the ship was decommissioned. The president's desk in the oval office was a gift from England, made from the timbers of that ship. It was presented to President Hayes as a thank you for the return of their ship.

Some of this story is exaggerated (to make it more interesting), but the battle did happen, Francis Scott Key did pen the National Anthem, and the flag that was flown over Fort Henry can be seen at the Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of Amwrican History.

Are you kidding? This is about the war of 1812 not the Revolution 1775 -83. We are citizens of a sovereign nation (U.S.A) not British subjects. The video is pretty much just a work of fiction.
It wasn’t British subjects vs British subjects in 1814. The U.S. won its independence in 1789. It was British against Americans at the time of this war.

The narrator refers to the "colonies" but as this was after the country had already won their independence from Great Britain, they were already the United States of America. This was during the second war fought between our two countries, which was known as The War of 1812, which actually was fought for a period of at least two years. The British had already marched on Washington DC and burned the White House. This battle was for the port of Baltimore, Maryland, which was considered much more strategic than DC itself. The British couldn't come any closer to the fort because the waters surrounding it were too shallow.
The narrator was the late great, President Ronald Reagan.

As schoolchildren we were taught this song and sang it in music class, I can't watch this without getting tears in my eyes.
We said the pledge allegiance to the flag every morning in grade school.
I pledge allegiance, to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
Is why our flag is never to tough the ground, sacrifice, and if flow at night. Its it to be light up

I am from Puerto Rico, proud to be American, my husband serve in vientnan two of my son in the Navy retail, and knot my grandson is in the Marine on Japan. We love are flat. ❤
There are two typos in the words shown on the screen. It is "What so proudly we hailed ..." not held and "... through the perilous fight" not flight. It is also sung at the beginning of all baseball games, so much so that many people think the last two words to the song are actually "Play Ball!" the traditional call to start the game.

Several times the narrator sites the colonies. This battle was in the War of 1812 so it was the United States not colonies He calls the fort Henry. It's Fort McHenry. The release was only one prisoner a doctor and the British didn't have hundreds of ships maybe 3 dozen (I just googled there were 19 British ships) but the story about keeping the flag up was true and Francis Scott Key. The original Star Spangled Banner is in the Smithsonian Museum in Washigton DC and its huge 30x 42 feet.

We had to sing this daily, along with the pledge every day at school for the first 4 years of school, so most people know the words by the first month of Kindergarten. That was just my school though, every single school is different.
I think many people fudge the words because whooo, it's a hard song sometimes and you just don't have the range and those difficult moments you drop the words. I always just mouthed "And the rockets' red glare." line because I always cracked when I tried to reach it, until I was older and my voice could do more.
And I think singing such a difficult song, at an event, in front of dozens, hundreds, thousands of people is quite a bit of pressure, especially since mistakes can violently offend certain kinds of people.
Like, it's a song, and it's hard, but they get treated like traitors. Every SuperBowl performance gets carefully mulled over by every citizen as if it was a trial that would determine the fate of the rest of their carrier. It's a heck of a lot of pressure.
I first saw this a couple of years ago. As a 67 year old American I'm embarrassed to admit that I always knew the words but never the story of how the song came about or the real meaning of the song so I'm grateful for this wonderful video. It should be used as a tool in every school in the US. This is the story now being played out in real time in Ukraine. Our families are in Britain. Much love. We don't do royalty but it's interesting. My uncles and dad fought in WWII. We still feel passionately about our flag and country.

Actually it was 15 stars and 15 stripes at the time. In 1814, they were still adding one stripe for each state and, at that time, there were 15 states. It was decided later that adding an extra stripe for each state would have been too much, so they reverted back to 13 to represent the 13 original colonies. The video is inaccurate in that the presenter refers to the US as colonies, but this happened during the War of 1812, when the US was already an independent nation. Still a great video though.

We say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Christian Flag and American Flag every Sunday at our church here in America and both Pledges still get me every time we say them. Never gets old.❤

As an older American who learned this in school , I love this version It makes me proud ! But it is embellished , There were 19 ships that fired between 1500 - 1800 cannon shots , and there were not that many POWs . But you have to put into context the time when this recording was made in the mid 1960's at the height of the cold war . Jack Webb of Dragnet fame is the narrator.

There is a song called “My Country ‘‘tis of thee”, set to the tune of God Save the Queen, though It’s not sung much today.. Even though we fought each other, many of our customs, traditions and values come from the British. Most of us love all things British because ultimately we were founded by the British.

PLUS most of our States, Counties, Roads, Highways etc are Named after British Kings, Queens and Areas over in the UK. 😆😅😂🤣 We got mad & separated but we weren't so mad that we didn't name almost everything over here as "reminders of our original home" so to speak.

Not an accurate telling of how the poem came about (not initially a song). I believe this was from a radio broadcast by some religious minister in California, and I have no idea where he got the idea that this was the actual chain of events. The poem was, indeed, written by Mr. Key in 1814 (The War of 1812) about his witnessing the attack on Fort McHenry from where he was being held in the hold of a British ship though, and he titled the poem "The Defence of Fort M'Henry." Key's brother-in-law saw that the poem fit the music of a then popular British drinking song titled, "To Ancreon in Heaven" by John Stafford Smith. The poem was turned into the song "The Star-Spangled Banner" which was adopted as the American National Anthem in 1931.

Francis Scott Key wrote it to the melody because it was published in a Baltimore paper a couple of days after the attack also he wrote another song 9 yrs earlier using the same melody called When the warrior returns

I was taught this in elementary school and I am 74 yrs old. I don't think it's taught in our schools anymore 😢. Francis Scott key wrote everything he saw and heard down on paper. So he documented it. His paperwork is in the Smithsonian and so is the very flag that the song is about.
Now y'all need to do Whitney Houston singing it. She sang for the Desert Storm war. Also, there's video where a singers mic went out & the enormous crowd started singing it. Also, we don't just sing it at NFL games. It's basically ANY sporting event. Great reaction 🥰🥰
