My maternal grandfather was from Carolina. 1/4 black and half Cherokee. He married my grandmother, who was a blonde headed, blue eyed, white girl in Alabama in the 1930's. I know many atrocities were committed in the past by every side but I'm also a US Marine! Infantry! I've fought shoulder to shoulder with Americans from New York Italians to Massachusetts Irish to California Hispanics to Montana Indians to Georgia and Mississippi black men and Tennessee hillbilly crackers! I was born and raised in Alabama. Most folks, just looking at me, consider me a white guy. I'm pale and have blue eyes but truth is my great grandfather was from Carolina. He was half Cherokee and half black. He was so tall he'd have to bend his head to walk through a doorway! He fought in WW 1. After the war he moved to Alabama and married my great grandmother (a blonde haired, blue eyed, white woman and the daughter of the Bibb County sheriff) in the 1920's! In Alabama! And got away with it! He was one helluva man! I joined the Marine Corps and went to Iraq in 02 right after 9/11. Lost my right eye and got an ugly scar on my head but proud to be an American and proud of my Big PawPaw! I was 13 years old in 93' and he was 93 years old. I miss that old man! During the Obama admin it was starting to get bad. I was mentoring high school students that were having difficulty in school during my limited time off and some of those teachers in my old high school tried blocking me from entering the school not because I might be a security risk but because they had issue with my USN dress blue and summer working white uniform worn by all officers in the USN today.

Gentlemen this story is very true. It happened during the War of 1812. It is well documented. The actual flag is under glass on display. It's HUGE! Many of our anthems and hymns are written from personal experiences. They give tours of the Fort McHenry where this battle took place. It is very true. Sadly, hardly any of our American history is taught accurately in our schools. You should check out pictures on line of this Fort and the flag. 😊

As a disabled Marine, it should now be obvious to most why so many Americans became disgusted and upset at the site of athletes taking a knee. For my family, who have served in all the 20th century battles, it was appalling. Nice job on the reaction guys.
Jim, you’re taking it all wrong. I don’t blame you because those with an ulterior motive told you it was disrespectful and you believed them. Look at it another way. The way it was meant to be taken by those who did it. Taking a knee is a sign of respect. Respect for our country. It was also meant as a message from those who felt they were being discriminated against. Not by the flag or our country as a whole, but by those people in our country who, because they held positions of authority, passed laws that deliberately kept a certain segment of our society from enjoying all the rights and freedoms meant for every citizen here, not just some. This is the absolute truth, and it has been deliberately hidden from you by those who don’t want you to know. Here’s an example: Did you know that when our brave soldiers returned from fighting WW2, simply because of the color of their skin, our black and brown solders were denied the right to access the benefits of the GI Bill? That bill allowed returning soldiers to buy homes, attend college, and start businesses. Because the black and brown soldiers were denied those funds, funds they earned by fighting for the US in WW2, they were left poorer and less educated in comparison to their white brothers. And that’s only one example of the unfairness built into our system. That unfairness is what taking the knee was trying to point out, and the message was lost because some people decided to be insulted instead of honestly looking at the reasons for it. Taking a knee has always been meant as a show of respect. We take a knee in church, before kings and queens, and to honor heroes. It was never meant to be disrespectful.
I understand how it was viewed as disrespectful by some. But there are countries in the world where someone doing that in a public venue against their government could actually be imprisoned, maybe executed. As Americans we need to value freedom of expression, give voice to the voiceless. Athletes taking a knee, we may not agree, but that is one of the things that make our country great, that people have the ability to express themselves, one of the things you fought for. Just my two cents.

I am 51 and learned this in American history as a kid. It actually happened. We learned how the song was written after this also. It is 💯. That is why we stand for our pledge and cover our hearts to recite it, why we sing our anthem and why our flag is to NEVER touch the ground. Those people died for freedom from oppression; religious and otherwise. We stood together as a nation. In these times, we really need that again, not to be divided. I wish people could wake up and see that. Everyone deserves to be equal, healthy and happy.

Ok, I read a few comments below and realized that quite a few Americans don't know their history. This story is embellished. This is The War of 1812. The Brits had just put fire to the white house and came down to put fire to Baltimore. They attacked the city with ground troops but were halted by the city defenses. So they decided to send a fleet of 20 small and large ships(not hundreds) to go up the river to the dockside and attack. Had to pass Ft Henry First. The fort was held by 1000 US Troops (unknown civilians). Remember we are a nation at this time, for about 50yrs. Out of that 6 were killed(soldiers)and civilians unknown. They fail to take the fort. The quote that Washington said is actually credited to the Mexican revolutionary Zapata and his men yelling it as they were gunned down by the Federals(look it up). The mission the doctor was on was to get the release of a well-liked doctor who was on those prison ships. He wrote the poem of the national anthem, but it did not become our national anthem til around the mid-1930s. When the lyrics were added. The pastor who narrated and put this all together was called out on his, let's say exaggerations? He has since made a second explaining his video, but what it comes down to is a "what if in your imagination" type explanation. OOH! I almost forgot. Yes, I do love this country. I served in the military like most in my family. I just don't dilute myself, understanding we aren't perfect.

Absolutely! When the whole "kneeling" thing started it made me so angry! My dad joined the Air Force at 15 with a doctored birth certificate. By 16, he was in Germany for the end of WW2. He stayed in 24 years, through Korea & early Vietnam. I told people then, "One day that flag will cover my dad's coffin. If that were the ONLY reason to respect it, THAT would be enough!" He passed away in 2020 & indeed that Flag DID cover his coffin. It was then folded by 2 Airmen & handed to me by a 3rd while 3 others fired their rifles in salute. That was the saddest & the proudest moment of my life at the same time. God bless you for your service & May God bless America always 🇺🇸❤️

In the USMC, over the 8 years I spent in active duty, we were trained to have the utmost respect for that flag. Always rendering a salute, never allowing the colors to touch the ground and presenting all fallen veterans' families with a folded flag for the service their loved one paid to their country. Amazing how much disrespect is shown to that flag. To all my patriots who still stand with their hand over their hearts when this song is played and to all my fellow Marines, Semper Fi.

My American military husband brought me to America. I didn't speak English, but in time I taught myself. When I understood the words to the American Anthem, I cried over the bravery of those patriots. Knowing they would get killed holding the Flag up, they help it up proudly. They had no desire to live under British rule. The courage it took made me cry. I still cry every time I heat it. I hold my right hand over my heart and cry. To me it's the most beautiful song. You and my aunt have basically the same coming to America backstory. My Uncle a US Marine met his wife a Korean woman while on his way back to the United States from a tour in Vietnam as a Force Recon Marine and on his stop in Korea he saw this beautiful young 19 year old girl and he was 21 and he fell in love lol. They married and he promised her he would come back to get her and she believed him and he kept his word. When he returned however long it was they married and came back to America and they’ve been married to this day. She learned to speak English and she became a citizen and my aunt is the funniest person you will ever meet and she was so proud when she became a United States Citizen. They would walk around it and not one person stepped on it. The garrison flag was hoisted at dawn, "By the dawn's early light", as the British withdrew to celebrate the victory which inspired Francis Key to pen the poem. In 2009 my daughter at the young age of 22 became a widow. Her husband-Lance Corporal Jordan Chrobot, a US Marine was killed in action in Afghanistan. I will always love and honor our flag because it represents the land of the free and the home of the brave- the BRAVE that fought to keep it FREE.

And while I have family enlisted and always have and always will support the troops, do you really think our troops were over in Afghanistan for freedom? What's the difference between us going into Afghanistan for 20ys, and what Russian is attempting now to do in Ukraine? The ONLY difference is Afghanistan isn't our neighbor, and we have a military that's not falling apart, in fact it's so powerful, that no one else in the world had the balls or the military to put sanctions on the U.S. for doing our imperialistic think in the middle east for 2 decades. As far as freedom, we fell to 24th last year on the international freedom index scale, so countries like Taiwan, Czech Republic, Australia and 20 other countries have more freedom than the U.S.
My real dad's father had to shot one of his own second to the oldest brother in WW2 in Normandie and his oldest brother on D-Day. All my grandfather cause do was cry and ask himself why. When I found out that was the reason why my grandfather never talked about WW2. I would go and hug him and tell I would not be here if he did do his job. And he would just smile and your right JJ.

Britain didn't lose the war (War of 1812). It was a draw. Britain Kept Canada land ( Canada is bigger land than the US). Remember the war started once the US attacked British Canada in order to avenge the British naval blockade in the Atlantic. Still a huge feat by the Americans to draw up with a superpower ( without much French help this time as in during the Revolutionary war). The British attacked and almost took New Orleans in the South. The US had to enlist some Haitian soldiers to help fight the British. Haitian Offc Joseph Savary was the first black officer in the US military. He was recruited to fight the British during the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Look him up, interesting story..

It was told in a story teller fashion. With lots of descriptive words that emote the fight feelings. This story was told over radios.. without pictures. Which means it needed to be descriptive and emotional. It's old school.
My dad as a 21 yr old Marine watched that flag go up on Mt. Suribachi and even as an old man he would struggle to his feet when this song played. God bless you young men for playing this.
This goes back to the War of 1812, when we were fighting the British. Francis Scott Key wrote it as a poem first. Written on the back of an envelope as he watched the bombing of Ft. McHenry by British ships. It became known as The Battle of Baltimore. The flag in the song is the flag that flew over Ft. McHenry, and it was still standing after the battle was over and the British retreated. Every elementary school kid in Baltimore has been to Ft. McHenry on a school trip. It's a National Monument and Historic Site now, and you can still visit.

Your Gov declared war against Britain to stop the impressment of US sailors into the British navy and to stop the naval blockade of American shipments to France. The burning of your White House and Atlanta was in direct response to the burning of Niagara and York in Upper Canada. American ass was kicked from the northern border down to Atlanta and the British were not stopped until the battle of New Orleans. By that time a peace treaty had already been signed. @@Webber105 First off,you need a history lesson on the cause for the War of 1812.The two leading causes of the war were the British Orders-in-Council, which limited American trade with Europe, and impressment, the Royal Navy's practice of taking seamen from American merchant vessels to fill out the crews of its own chronically undermanned warships.We didn't have a Governor,we had a President of our United States.same as we do now,and on June 17, 1812, the Senate approved a House-passed resolution declaring war with Great Britain, with three amendments, by a vote of 19-13. Yes, the story is true! I actually wrote a term paper about it for American History. A lot of people now point to the 2nd verse where he mentions slaves. But you have to know your history! He wasn't talked about ACTUAL slaves, as many of them were fighting for the US also. He was calling the citizens who were loyal to England "slaves". Because they preferred to be ruled by a King than to be free! I actually get emotional every time that I hear this song. So glad that y'all took the time to learn the REAL meaning of the words! As a Marylander, I love to tell people that Fort McHenry still stands to this day. It's a National Monument in the NPS and an American Flag still waves high above it. Francis Scott Key was indeed a lawyer in Maryland during the war of 1812 (I live in the town that he's from) and because it is a true story, you can also see the actual Star Spangle Banner Flag at the Smithsonian museum in DC.

This would be great as a movie, but without a factual predicate, it can border on propaganda. I often encounter this sort of thing and wonder why others are clearly unwilling to sort through some of the noise and access the factual, relative and readily available information. I am as American as anyone, and my own dad fought in one of the most violent, and prolonged conflicts our country has engaged, but it is out of that self-awareness and understanding that my commitment to truth in representation is born. My family (white) has members who came to the colonies as SLAVES. Yes, the first slaves who came to America were white, poor and sold for debts by the Irish government. I never look at color of the skin asan American. These brave men and women who fought the British fought for everyone to have freedom. I have the utmost respect for our national anthem. It does not recognize color or country of origin. We are all so blessed to live here in the USA. My family never owned a slave in all our generations here. 5 of my family died to free our black brothers and sisters from slavery. I just saw a video before this one of a sports match in Toronto between US and Canadian teams where they were singing the national anthems and while the singer representing the US was singing our anthem the mic cut out and the Canadian crowd sang our anthem. It moved me to tears. I was amazed that they knew the words! We learn it in school from very early and it is played every morning when school begins and is followed by our recitation of The Pledge of Allegiance so we all know our anthem very well, but the fact that so many Canadians knew the words truly amazed me and that Y'all banded together so that our anthem would be sung was such a tremendous thing to do. I taught it to my eldest during our state's shutdown. I learned about it during my Civics class she was a wonderful teacher. It was a requirement for us to enter high-school.
The Star Spangled Banner was written here in Bmore. I grew up about 10 minutes from Ft. McHenry. So I've heard this story so many times in school and on field trips to Ft. McHenry. This story is real although dramaticized. The flag kept flying because people were holding it up and kept it up dead and all lots of blacks. It is still there now.
75% of this story is so fictionalized as to be unrecognizable to real historians. Much of it never happened at all, especially the most dramatic parts of the story.

I was born and raised in Alabama. Most folks, just looking at me, consider me a white guy. I'm pale and have blue eyes but truth is my great grandfather was from Carolina. He was half Cherokee and half black. He was so tall he'd have to bend his head to walk through a doorway! He fought in WW 1.
After the war he moved to Alabama and married my great grandmother (a blonde haired, blue eyed, white woman and the daughter of the Bibb County sheriff) in the 1920's! In Alabama! And got away with it! He was one helluva man!

Gentlemen this story is very true. It happened during the War of 1812. It is well documented. The actual flag is under glass on display. It's HUGE! Many of our anthems and hymns are written from personal experiences. They give tours of the Fort McHenry where this battle took place. It is very true. Sadly, hardly any of our American history is taught accurately in our schools. You should check out pictures on line of this Fort and the flag. 😊
Go to the Smithsonian and see the flag. It was one of the incredible times of my life. Don't take anyone's word for it. Learn history. Not just what the left has been telling you for years, then make your own decisions on what you take the time to know for yourselves.

Jim, you’re taking it all wrong. I don’t blame you because those with an ulterior motive told you it was disrespectful and you believed them. Look at it another way. The way it was meant to be taken by those who did it. Taking a knee is a sign of respect. Respect for our country. It was also meant as a message from those who felt they were being discriminated against. Not by the flag or our country as a whole, but by those people in our country who, because they held positions of authority, passed laws that deliberately kept a certain segment of our society from enjoying all the rights and freedoms meant for every citizen here, not just some. This is the absolute truth, and it has been deliberately hidden from you by those who don’t want you to know.
Here’s an example: Did you know that when our brave soldiers returned from fighting WW2, simply because of the color of their skin, our black and brown solders were denied the right to access the benefits of the GI Bill? That bill allowed returning soldiers to buy homes, attend college, and start businesses. Because the black and brown soldiers were denied those funds, funds they earned by fighting for the US in WW2, they were left poorer and less educated in comparison to their white brothers. And that’s only one example of the unfairness built into our system. That unfairness is what taking the knee was trying to point out, and the message was lost because some people decided to be insulted instead of honestly looking at the reasons for it. Taking a knee has always been meant as a show of respect. We take a knee in church, before kings and queens, and to honor heroes. It was never meant to be disrespectful.
I understand how it was viewed as disrespectful by some. But there are countries in the world where someone doing that in a public venue against their government could actually be imprisoned, maybe executed. As Americans we need to value freedom of expression, give voice to the voiceless. Athletes taking a knee, we may not agree, but that is one of the things that make our country great, that people have the ability to express themselves, one of the things you fought for. Just my two cents.
In the 90's my son graduated from high school..he went straight to the US Marines..he was willing to lay his life down so you could sleep in peace at night....that is my little boy

I am 51 and learned this in American history as a kid. It actually happened. We learned how the song was written after this also. It is 💯. That is why we stand for our pledge and cover our hearts to recite it, why we sing our anthem and why our flag is to NEVER touch the ground. Those people died for freedom from oppression; religious and otherwise. We stood together as a nation. In these times, we really need that again, not to be divided. I wish people could wake up and see that. Everyone deserves to be equal, healthy and happy.

It's a deeply moving song, and everyone in the US should be proud of those brave men and women who died that night.

Ok, I read a few comments below and realized that quite a few Americans don't know their history. This story is embellished. This is The War of 1812. The Brits had just put fire to the white house and came down to put fire to Baltimore. They attacked the city with ground troops but were halted by the city defenses. So they decided to send a fleet of 20 small and large ships(not hundreds) to go up the river to the dockside and attack. Had to pass Ft Henry First. The fort was held by 1000 US Troops (unknown civilians). Remember we are a nation at this time, for about 50yrs. Out of that 6 were killed(soldiers)and civilians unknown. They fail to take the fort. The quote that Washington said is actually credited to the Mexican revolutionary Zapata and his men yelling it as they were gunned down by the Federals(look it up). The mission the doctor was on was to get the release of a well-liked doctor who was on those prison ships. He wrote the poem of the national anthem, but it did not become our national anthem til around the mid-1930s. When the lyrics were added. The pastor who narrated and put this all together was called out on his, let's say exaggerations? He has since made a second explaining his video, but what it comes down to is a "what if in your imagination" type explanation. OOH! I almost forgot. Yes, I do love this country. I served in the military like most in my family. I just don't dilute myself, understanding we aren't perfect.

Absolutely! When the whole "kneeling" thing started it made me so angry! My dad joined the Air Force at 15 with a doctored birth certificate. By 16, he was in Germany for the end of WW2. He stayed in 24 years, through Korea & early Vietnam. I told people then, "One day that flag will cover my dad's coffin. If that were the ONLY reason to respect it, THAT would be enough!"
He passed away in 2020 & indeed that Flag DID cover his coffin. It was then folded by 2 Airmen & handed to me by a 3rd while 3 others fired their rifles in salute. That was the saddest & the proudest moment of my life at the same time.

In the USMC, over the 8 years I spent in active duty, we were trained to have the utmost respect for that flag. Always rendering a salute, never allowing the colors to touch the ground and presenting all fallen veterans' families with a folded flag for the service their loved one paid to their country. Amazing how much disrespect is shown to that flag. To all my patriots who still stand with their hand over their hearts when this song is played and to all my fellow Marines, Semper Fi.

My American military husband brought me to America. I didn't speak English, but in time I taught myself. When I understood the words to the American Anthem, I cried over the bravery of those patriots. Knowing they would get killed holding the Flag up, they help it up proudly. They had no desire to live under British rule. The courage it took made me cry. I still cry every time I heat it. I hold my right hand over my heart and cry. To me it's the most beautiful song. You and my aunt have basically the same coming to America backstory. My Uncle a US Marine met his wife a Korean woman while on his way back to the United States from a tour in Vietnam as a Force Recon Marine and on his stop in Korea he saw this beautiful young 19 year old girl and he was 21 and he fell in love lol. They married and he promised her he would come back to get her and she believed him and he kept his word. When he returned however long it was they married and came back to America and they’ve been married to this day. She learned to speak English and she became a citizen and my aunt is the funniest person you will ever meet and she was so proud when she became a United States Citizen. @@BestKCL You can see the garrison flag of Fort McHenry in the Smithsonian Museum of American History. The bombardment lasted for 24 or 25 hours. The Battle of Baltimore, I believe, was when the fort was engaged. This flag didn't fly over the fort throughout the battle, because there was a rainstorm during the siege. A smaller flag, known as a storm flag, flew over the fort. The garrison flag was hoisted at dawn, "By the dawn's early light", as the British withdrew to celebrate the victory which inspired Francis Key to pen the poem.

In 2009 my daughter at the young age of 22 became a widow. Her husband-Lance Corporal Jordan Chrobot, a US Marine was killed in action in Afghanistan. I will always love and honor our flag because it represents the land of the free and the home of the brave- the BRAVE that fought to keep it FREE.
I am truly sorry for your daughters loss, but what does this fabricated story have to do with honor or freedom? And while I have family enlisted and always have and always will support the troops, do you really think our troops were over in Afghanistan for freedom? What's the difference between us going into Afghanistan for 20ys, and what Russian is attempting now to do in Ukraine? The ONLY difference is Afghanistan isn't our neighbor, and we have a military that's not falling apart, in fact it's so powerful, that no one else in the world had the balls or the military to put sanctions on the U.S. for doing our imperialistic think in the middle east for 2 decades.
As far as freedom, we fell to 24th last year on the international freedom index scale, so countries like Taiwan, Czech Republic, Australia and 20 other countries have more freedom than the U.S.

My real dad's father had to shot one of his own second to the oldest brother in WW2 in Normandie and his oldest brother on D-Day. All my grandfather cause do was cry and ask himself why. Britain didn't lose the war (War of 1812). It was a draw. Britain Kept Canada land ( Canada is bigger land than the US). Remember the war started once the US attacked British Canada in order to avenge the British naval blockade in the Atlantic. Still a huge feat by the Americans to draw up with a superpower ( without much French help this time as in during the Revolutionary war).
The British attacked and almost took New Orleans in the South. The US had to enlist some Haitian soldiers to help fight the British. Haitian Offc Joseph Savary was the first black officer in the US military. He was recruited to fight the British during the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Look him up, interesting story..

It was told in a story teller fashion. With lots of descriptive words that emote the fight feelings. This story was told over radios.. without pictures. Which means it needed to be descriptive and emotional. It's old school.
My dad as a 21 yr old Marine watched that flag go up on Mt. Suribachi and even as an old man he would struggle to his feet when this song played. God bless you young men for playing this.

This goes back to the War of 1812, when we were fighting the British. Francis Scott Key wrote it as a poem first. Written on the back of an envelope as he watched the bombing of Ft. McHenry by British ships. It became known as The Battle of Baltimore. The flag in the song is the flag that flew over Ft. McHenry, and it was still standing after the battle was over and the British retreated. Every elementary school kid in Baltimore has been to Ft. McHenry on a school trip. It's a National Monument and Historic Site now, and you can still visit.
This was 2nd round of invasion of colonies by the British,we ran the British off in Revolutionary war,they came back to attack the colonies again in 1812,burned the White House down,and as in the Revolutionary War we prevailed again.God Bless America!!!

Your Gov declared war against Britain to stop the impressment of US sailors into the British navy and to stop the naval blockade of American shipments to France.
The burning of your White House and Atlanta was in direct response to the burning of Niagara and York in Upper Canada.
American ass was kicked from the northern border down to Atlanta and the British were not stopped until the battle of New Orleans. By that time a peace treaty had already been signed.

Yes, the story is true! I actually wrote a term paper about it for American History.
A lot of people now point to the 2nd verse where he mentions slaves. But you have to know your history! He wasn't talked about ACTUAL slaves, as many of them were fighting for the US also. He was calling the citizens who were loyal to England "slaves". Because they preferred to be ruled by a King than to be free!

As a Marylander, I love to tell people that Fort McHenry still stands to this day. It's a National Monument in the NPS and an American Flag still waves high above it. Francis Scott Key was indeed a lawyer in Maryland during the war of 1812 (I live in the town that he's from) and because it is a true story, you can also see the actual Star Spangle Banner Flag at the Smithsonian museum in DC.

@@75colstonb There are videos online of the restoration work that was done, it's fascinating. Really hard to wrap your head around how big it is without seeing it. And what's left is not even the full flag, many parts were cut up and given away as gifts while the flag was in private ownership.

I'm a veteran, nothing warms my heart more than the young men learning just what we stand for.
I learned about this in school. It made me respect our country even more. I have family that are veterans some that died. Will always respect our flag and vets.
Freedom is something we take for granted but those men knew what it was to not be free… they thoroughly believed that freedom was worth dying for. Hard times make strong men, strong men make good times, good times make soft men, soft men make hard times. America was once full of real patriots that didn’t fear the government and those men penned the 2 greatest pieces of governing literature in history, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. We as a nation and a society have forgotten the importance of the sacrifices the founding fathers made for our current freedoms, freedoms that our government are constantly trying to to strip us of.

@@legendg219 So, here is what I am responding to. I happen to be very well versed in this history. This is a fantastic telling and it hits all of the emotional triggers, but facts are important. This would be great as a movie, but without a factual predicate, it can border on propaganda. I often encounter this sort of thing and wonder why others are clearly unwilling to sort through some of the noise and access the factual, relative and readily available information. I am as American as anyone, and my own dad fought in one of the most violent, and prolonged conflicts our country has engaged, but it is out of that self-awareness and understanding that my commitment to truth in representation is born. It doesn't take much to research this history, and people can disagree on certain facts, but it clearly takes a lot less to simply take everything at face value. Blessings to you.

Jimmy Hendrix did a guitar version of the Anthem at Woodstock which most Americans don't know about. It's absolutely brilliant. Take a listen if you haven't yet. Great guitarist.
Wyclef did a pretty good rendition at Woodstock '99 as well. But he was being pelted with bottles while he performed it.

My family (white) has members who came to the colonies as SLAVES. Yes, the first slaves who came to America were white, poor and sold for debts by the Irish government. I never look at color of the skin asan American. These brave men and women who fought the British fought for everyone to have freedom. I have the utmost respect for our national anthem. It does not recognize color or country of origin. We are all so blessed to live here in the USA. My family never owned a slave in all our generations here. 5 of my family died to free our black brothers and sisters from slavery. It’s not as simple as what politicians say when they set races against each other in order to control us.
We fought for this Country. We fought for this freedom. We fought for a free way. Let’s not forget. And Remember.

It isnt true though. Not this version of the story. This version is a myth. At least 80% of what is said here is made up. The lawyer got on the boat to make a deal, battle happened, he saw the flag after battle and it touched him. All the rest is completely made up. It is sad people have to invent extra shit to make it sound more amazing than it is.

this story is a work of fiction. key was in baltimore to secure the release of a single civilian prisoner, not a bunch of soldiers. he wasn't on a british ship during the bombardment.

I just saw a video before this one of a sports match in Toronto between US and Canadian teams where they were singing the national anthems and while the singer representing the US was singing our anthem the mic cut out and the Canadian crowd sang our anthem. It moved me to tears. I was amazed that they knew the words! We learn it in school from very early and it is played every morning when school begins and is followed by our recitation of The Pledge of Allegiance so we all know our anthem very well, but the fact that so many Canadians knew the words truly amazed me and that Y'all banded together so that our anthem would be sung was such a tremendous thing to do. Canadians are great people! ❤

It shocks me that there are so many Americans who have never learned the history of our American flag and so many of our battles and wars. It just blows me away. I must be old or something, or just got lucky with where I went to school.
I’m like you though, I don’t know how many times in my life I’ve felt tears flow freely and quietly when I heard our National Anthem at sports games. I seem to connect this song with baseball and hockey, not so much football, but then that just shows my interest and geographical areas of where I lived. And I still put my hand to my heart and make sure I’m not wearing a hat no matter where I am when I hear it.

I taught it to my eldest during our state's shutdown. I learned about it during my Civics class she was a wonderful teacher. It was a requirement for us to enter high-school.

The Star Spangled Banner was written here in Bmore. I grew up about 10 minutes from Ft. McHenry. So I've heard this story so many times in school and on field trips to Ft. McHenry. This story is real although dramaticized. The flag kept flying because people were holding it up and kept it up dead and all lots of blacks. It is still there now.
75% of this story is so fictionalized as to be unrecognizable to real historians.
Much of it never happened at all, especially the most dramatic parts of the story.
