Fun fact: each carrier strike group has at least 1 nuclear submarine, an Ohio class nuclear submarine can carry 20 Trident 2 nuclear missiles, which each have about 4-5 nuclear warheads that each can target a different city. I'm from the US and I personally believe our military spending is a necessity because China has a stated plan to be the superpower on the planet by 2055. They also are trying to supplant the dollar with the yuan as the world's fiat currency at the same time. They probably will have a hard time doing that because they manipulate their currency. We are not the world's "bully" like some think. We try to prevent other nations with goals to change the world's balance of power. I personally believe we have to spend on our military and I also wish we didn't have to do so.

China already claims to be at war with us. Read the English language edition of the Global Times. It’s the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party. They are very clear about their goals and what they think of the US. They believe they’re the center of the universe, the rightful rulers of the planet, and they even go so far to claim ownership of the sun, the planets and the stars themselves. And the only thing in their way is their enemy, the United States.

I strongly disagree with you but understand your point. I think we could split our military spending in half and still effortlessly be the biggest "superpower" in the world, which i also dont have a problem with other countries being as powerful as us. Nobody will ever invade us because it's almost impossible, and a ton of our military efforts and spending just go to proxy wars and destabilizing small countries governments. If we were doing objectively good things with the funding then i wouldnt mind, but we've used that money to go towards some horrible things that has caused irreversible damage to other countries. Of course having the biggest military in the world has perks, but when it comes at the expense of citizens well-being i think that money could go to better things. (No hate or anything, not trying to argue. Just giving my opinion on it)

The entire surface of the earth has already been platted to within an inch of elevation, already done through GPS and in the database.
You fire a ground artillery round towards the Kremlin, for example, and the round/“missile” reads the topography of the land to tell it exactly where to land. It doesn’t read off a GPS satellite to guide it.
Make a left at the borscht shop (that building is in the database), make a right past the fat old woman drinking vodka, and right into Putin’s lap.

If our allies spent their own money properly on their defense, we could triple every service member's pay and still have 100 billion dollars spare to use on procurement of new jets, tanks, vehicles, guns, etc.

The cockiness is understandable, but it is also a crutch that makes people feel unstoppable and we all know from U.S. history that is not always the case. The biggest thing that works to our advantage is our patriotism, I know there seems to be a divide with American people, but it's akin to how you might treat an annoying relative or sibling, you can pick on them all you want, but if someone else steps and picks on them, the you will defend them to no end. I served in the USA military for 30 years at relatively high levels and can say USA defense (or defence for our British friends) spending is very inefficient, but that's the nature of democracies by design for the sake of integrity and fairness. The USA spends more on defense than the next 10 nations combined. The next closest nations in terms of military spending are China, India and Russia. I have no insight into the efficiency of these nation's expenditures, but I believe whatever advantages attained in efficiency are more than lost in corruption. The size of a nation's military force is of little value if it can't be brought to bear at the point of the fight. The USA is uncontested in it's ability to project military power anywhere in the world--there's not a close second. Although the USA provides more humanitarian assistance than ALL other nations combined, not even considering private donations which would multiple this factor greatly, I wish the USA could divert more resources from defense to humanitarian purposes, both domestically and internationally, but until people can be physically safe, what else matters?

The US spends 2x as much per person on medical care than GB (14% GDP) ... so about half of that is wasted. Switzerland is a good example of mixed public/private care. But given the size of the job, the US is spending one third as much per capita on military now compared to the 1960. More of a quality R*D budget, rather than a quantity budget (3.5% GDP)

We do have universal healthcare. Anyone who cannot afford to pay for private insurance has Medicaid available to them. And anyone over 65 has Medicare available them. And anyone who can afford but struggles to pay has subsidized insurance through the Affordable Care Act. There is no reason to not have health insurance in the US.

@@lookoutforchris i believe he means good healthcare. Around 70% of people in the US will still be financially destroyed if something serious happens to them. I have pretty good health care and have still had to pay ~20k in health bills just this year because of one accident. The government can afford to give everyone better health care, they just won't because they're paid not to.
Also having bad health care leads to a lot of people refusing treatment even if they're seriously hurt. My friend got jumped last month but lives pay check to pay check so he refused treatment and is in bad shape because of our current system (he has insurance).

Britain is pretty much the technological equal of the U.S. In fact the U.S. fields several missiles and precision bombs designed by Britain. The M1A1 Abrams tank was originally clad in British "Chobham" armor. The U.S.Navy still to this day retains many of the traditions it inherited from the Royal Navy. Basically the American and British armed forces are essentially joined at the hip like a Siamese twin. In fact the U.K. was involved in the design of the S.T.O.V.L. version of the F-35 right from the start so that that version of the F-35 could be used by the Royal Navy, as it in fact now is. Additionally the U.k. and the U.S. are collaborating on not only providing Australia with nuclear powered (but not nuclear armed) submarines, they're also helping Australia to build out the industrial base required to start designing and building their own nuclear powered submarines from scratch so that China thinks a lot more than twice before ever trying to threaten or coerce Australia a second time. I could go on, and on, and on again. But I think you get the idea. Which is why there are SIX reasons You Shouldn't Mess With The U.K. (the sixth reason being the S.A.S.). God save the King. Best wishes from the other side of the pond. And may the ravens forever reside at the Tower of London.

As an American I firmly believe in dedicating a large portion of our GPD into the military. The USA is very good at constantly pushing the limits of our military technology. Knowing that we are viewed as the premier military power in the world brings me a lot of peace of mind. Though I do wish our military spending was done in a way that is more cost effective, there is a lot of unnecessary spending due to military contractor jacking up prices for the military when there are hundreds of civilian companies that can produce the same parts for much cheaper.

Re: The immense US defense budget.
It's a common fallacy people have to look at the USA for example spending $755 billion a year on defense and thinking if we just stopped doing that, we'd suddenly have 755B free to spend on other things, doesn't work that way. The US defense complex is a largely self-feeding beast because most of what we use is built here. Every dollar spent creates jobs, taxes, economic activity on many levels. You'd be lucky to reclaim out 1/5th of that money to actually spend on anything else, and you probably wouldn't get anything because of the lost taxes, unemployment, retraining, etc.
This is the result of a defense production advantage that has been accumulating continuously since WWII, 80 years of compounded expertise and advantage. If you ever gave it up, you'd never get it back even if you wanted to. The UA-camr Perun did a fascinating study of this very subject a few months ago, highly recommend you check that video out it's brilliant:

The J-20 is not 5th gen It's farm equipment paper mached to look like stolen US designs they were unable to properly replicate. As evidenced in 2021 by India, we're Indian SU-30 fighters were able to not just to detect but track and follow a pair of J-20 flying near the boarder.
Thats to say nothing of the fragile engines even the CCP has had trouble suppressing news of.
