    Thanks a lot for playing CupCakoon. And I gotta say I felt literal PAIN when you felt close to the end, because every 7th level, is a bigger level (I'll DEFINITELY make it smaller, thanks so much for that, that could ruin everything :O), but you were at the end, and after that is the first boss, and I just wanted to see you fighting him, there's even a little video that I didn't finish, and after that I made a little hack so you can choose whatever level you want in the menu :D
    Thanks again, it is just amazing to see someone enjoying a game you made \o/
    As a indie developer thank you for making these kind of video, really. And as a UA-camr, as soon as I see I have a minimum reach with my videos, I'll do the same to try to also help other!

    Trying to think of ways to make Vermin Hunter interesting and got the idea of changing the setting to Science Fantasy. You are a farmer colonized on an alien world protecting your farm from alien pests. Gives a cool excuse for enemy verity.
    If you decide to sink some money into it to get some extra help, turn it into a semi farm simulator. One part of the game is designing and expanding your farm to harvest the planets interesting wild life. The other part is designing you're defences to make it easier to see, get around, and have extra help from guards that you hire.
    The difficulty for the game gets harder as your farm grows. Bigger farm means more management in recourses and defences, and affects the number and size of the enemies that your farm attracts.

    Okay, Jonas. I've just hit the 4 minute mark, and you asked if you knew farmers who needed to hunt down rats in such a fashion.
    The answer is yes, but to be honest, it's not exactly how it's portrayed in this game.
    When I was young, my stepfather was an avid big game hunter, and would take rich people out into the wilderness to hunt for antelope and rams in Montana. He would always rent a cabin from a particular rancher who had thousands of acres of land. He had cows and sheep and horses, and so he was always worried about his livestock stepping into a prairie dog hole and breaking a leg.
    Therefore, whenever we arrived for hunting season, I would spend every night with the rancher's sons, spotlighting for gophers and porcupine and jackrabbits. The process is simple. Get some guns and booze and a 1000-candle spotlight and ride around with the hillbillies until you see a reflection in the dark. Then, while someone holds the light, the others take turns blasting.
    Now, that is not to say that this all happens under cover of darkness. During some rather terrifying years, there were infestations the likes of which you could not imagine. Fields that stretched for miles were pitted and ruined. We would pretend that we were soldiers in No Man's Land, sweltering in the late summer heat, and eventually, waiting wet and cold in the autumn drizzle. We crouched in terrible plywood shelters with rifles at the ready. As soon as a varmint was foolish enough to show his head, it was quickly rendered into a fine pink mist by the rancher, his sons, my stepfather, and yes, even me.
    To this day, I am torn by the disgusting silliness of it all, and as a grown man, I do not hunt. Part of me listens to the guffaws and goading of the others. "It's a dumb rodent!"
    And yes. They were rodents. They nearly drove the rancher to bankruptcy numerous times, losing crops, livestock, and the respect of his fellows over his inability to handle them. They were the enemy. And they were unstoppable. It's weird, but while I waited, peering through my scope for any sign of movement, I knew that what I was doing was right, but it didn't make it feel any better. If we poisoned them, we wouldn't need to watch them die, but they'd die anyway, death is death.
    The worst part was when the drinking got out of hand in the early mornings. We weren't just shooting rats, we were battling for the future of a family's well being, and it caused a sort of uncanny vertigo. They were always attacking, simply by nature of existing and proliferating. But the way we fought back, it was as if we were constantly in fear of reprisal by an equally human force. You didn't walk around, you stayed down. You didn't speak because they were listening. You didn't wear cologne or even antiperspirant because they could smell you. You learned that there's no such thing as silencers, that suppressors are still quite loud, and you learned that timing your shot to match a gust of wind was your best ticket to mastering the art of stealth.
    To the creator of this Varmint Shooter game, try and capture that feeling, and you'll have something. To Jonas, we have such sights to show you.

      This was an interesting story. Thanks for sharing it. The way you're introspective about past hunting experiences through the lens of an adult in the modern world reminds me of Tovar Cerulli (he wrote a book called "The Mindful Carnivore").
      If you eat meat, or really eat anything at all that grows on a farm, then you're involved in the life and death of these creatures. It's an interesting and uncomfortable topic, and most people can now go their whole lives without ever confronting it.

      totodaj Currently, when keyboard and mouse is detected I have the cursor hidden and clamped to the center of the screen. When the mouse moves I just rotate the direction of shooting towards the last movement. I initially had what Jonas recommended in the video but I thought it was more difficult to control. With that said, I prefer a game pad for these types of games so I am probably not the best judge for these things. Given this feedback I plan on implementing both methods of mouse movement. hunting rats is funny, not necessarily stupid. you were a bit harsh on the first one even tho your points were somewhat fair. but what i can add to the vermin hunter dev is that you need a community for your games if you don't have a community, you have nothing. start streaming your game dev or share screenshots when you re (say) done finishing a scene or adding a game mechanic. feedback is very important. it guides you and helps you make the right decisions and toss things you don't need (even if you spent a lot of time on them). your game is crap, its obvious but its a learning experience. do it again but this time while you're developing dont forget to share your stuff. get feedback on anything you create/add.

    • @JonasTyroller
      @JonasTyroller  4 роки тому +1

      Agreed. I was a bit harsh. Should have been more respectful.
      I think if you want to lean into the humorous direction you have to overdo it a bit more. Otherwise you land in a weird spot somewhere in between where people think you are serious. Hunting rats with a flamethrower or a rocket launcher would be a different story entirely... Actually maybe that is the way to save this game... :D

    For the very last game you played/reviewed, yeah there are many ways to change up the difficulty for the combat. Here are some of my ideas.
    There could be an enemy that kind of stretches it's arms/limbs/whatever they possess to attack and then it retracts back kinda like a boomerang. And a way to dodge that would be to jump.
    There could be another enemy that flies around and steadily goes towards the enemy, but runs away after receiving a certain amount of damage, and then comes back a while later.
    There could be another creature similar to the one I just mentioned, but instead of steadily moving towards the player, once it reaches a certain distance, it does this dash attack.
    There could be an enemy that actually tries to keep a distance from the player, but from time to time summons multiple minions.
    There could be an enemy that splits into two smaller parts when it dies (like the minecraft slime).
    There could be an enemy that cannot move, but can shoot consecutive projectiles at a time.
    There could be this enemy that is similar to the previous one, but shoots 1 projectile, but it bounces around for a while.
    And there are literally hundreds more ways an enemy can attack. It would be good if as the game progresses, the enemies increases or becomes harder. There could be certain parts of the set of enemies that show up are different. This will make it more diverse and make it that you create much more strategies.
    Also, maybe in certain times of the game, there could be special equipment to help the player. For example, a jet pack would be good for avoiding an enemy that dashes towards you or something. There could be equipment which gives special enhancements to the gun for a while, such as one that gives chance to freeze enemies or something. A slow motion bomb might be very cool and useful when stuck in an awful situation. Or there could even be this potion, when thrown, it creates a splash effect where the surrounding enemies starts to attack other enemies for certain period of time.
    I know, literally everyone can come up with these idea, but I guess I just wanted to share. But anyways, I feel like that game might actually be really fun to play if all these things are added.

      @JonasTyroller  4 роки тому +13

      Rendering that amount of squares is actually no problem at all if you make sure they are batched together into one or two draw calls. The bigger issue for those squares is probably collision checking but there are some ways to optimize that like just having a two dimensional array where objects can check which grid cell they're currently in.

    The way it seems to work is that you constantly gain resources. you CAN place a box anywhere but your multiplier will go down if you spend more then you have, so the idea would be is to make more small boxes that grow your resources faster so you can make even bigger boxes
    Where it fails is either having to "fail state" or no way to prevent you from spamming boxes regardless of size and then making a huge one with huge resources and getting a big score (and then jonas covered everything else good and bad about it)

    I don't think that's what an asset flip is. It's not just that all assets are taken from the store (or somewhere else). It's getting a completed game or game template and just changing (flipping) the assets. As in all you did was replace the existing assets with other assets. If you made the systems yourself or even just put them together or changed them substantially, that doesn't count as an asset flip even if all other assets such as models, music, icons, etc were taken from the store.

    • @anakay1184

      @@anakay1184 That's just it. GOI is NOT an asset flip even if he used someone else's asset for everything because everything else is Bennet Foddy's. • @JonasTyroller
      @JonasTyroller  4 роки тому

      @@anakay1184 I agree. I should have communicated that more clearly in the video. You can 100% use other assets if you do it well - which by the way Vermin Hunter absolutely seems to do it well.
      My point was that the UI of Vermin Hunter mentally makes me put it into the asset flip category (whether it is one or not). On the Steam page of Getting Over It that's not the case. You are right that HOW you made something doesn't matter for your sales but perception does.
      Hope that clarified my position. If it helps you save some time I 100% encourage using assets from the asset store. Nothing wrong with that. :)

    For Hippoxxus, the camera should tween to the midpoint (or 2/3 point) between the mouse and the character. This would fix the problem Jonas pointed out about not seeing where you're going more so than having exceptions per level, it's a lot easier, and makes the game much juicier and feel nicer.

    Good stuff, fun to see stuff from the #show-off-your-stuff channel on the discord :) Some of the advice might be hard to hear; the first one, where you basically said: the game you created only fits a very narrow audience (mainly the developer himself) can be tough, but it's good to say. Especially when you quit your job and have to rely on your game for income, it can't be just about what you would like to see; it's also a business and you have to make sure you can sustain yourself with the project you created. Doing some sort of market testing (ask people: would you be interested in this game? Would you pay for this game? How much would you pay for this game? Can I notify you when the game is released?, etc.) to get an idea if the thing you are about to create, will work at all, is very important if you are trying to turn this into a business.

    Honestly, I think Vermin Hunter is an interesting base and could be taken and made into something rather cool.
    It reminds me of Scott Cawthon's early games where he tried to make them cute and friendly, teaching Bible stories, fairy tales, and nursery rhymes, etc. to kids, but he got a lot of flack as his models and animations looked very creepy and not cute and friendly. He was told they looked like "creepy animatronics", so he took that feedback and pivoted, making Five Nights at Freddy's, and the rest is history.
    I think Vermin Hunter could be used to make a new horror game. Honestly the graphics look rather good and interesting, except the HUD/UI which is really really bad but that can be fixed. I think pivoting like Scott Cawthon, rethinking the design in a new game, making an interesting horror game could be a viable path for that developer. Try to be interesting and innovative with that design, subvert our expectations. The game needs a hook to draw people in to start playing it. As it stands, Vermin Hunter does not really have a hook, does not look attractive or like anything I'd want to play, but I think it could be retooled into something rather cool.

      The 6 direction shooting would push the game into a more casual direction and probably make it a bit more accessible to a wider audience. It would also make it easier to port the game to other platforms.
      I personally still like the free aim better because it gives me more freedom and doesn't break my immersion as much. A metroidvania like game that is seemingly very focused on exploration and figuring stuff out yourself might not be a great fit for casual players anyway.
      So that one depends on your vision and target audience really.

    An asset flip is not just using assets off the store in your game, that's just using assets the way they are supposed to be used, an "asset flip" is if you took a custom scene that someone else made and just put it in your game without modification.
    Also players on steam usually don't care if it is an asset flip anyways, they just care if it's a good game.

    On a farm, a 22. is a very useful tool in some cases. I use it for gophers mostly because they are harmful for horses (the horse can break its leg from a gopher hole and get put down) in that case, it is the easiest way to rid a field of gophers. And it’s target practice. I am not condoning randomly killing beautiful animals here in any way btw. It isn’t that much of a stretch to sit in a chair and shoot rodents on the property. HOWEVER, what the game Vermin Hunter makes up for in a realistic situation (sort of) it fails at making something that will catch anybody’s attention long enough to consider buying...
