I have a graphic novel series I am making with the estimated amount of eighty books. I have an extremely amazing imagination as well as clever story writing despite my poor grammar LOL. I am trying to learn to draw well and I was making extremely good progress but now when I try to draw my lower pinky and lower index finger get painful, and a top right part of my hand gets rigid even though I am drawing really light, occasionally using my whole arm, and I find that I feel pain after only twenty minutes and I am just 19. I am trying to do exercises like this and somatic exercises so I can someday make my dream come true so I really hope this helps. I also hope this helps cause playing my favorite video games like Hollow knight are not as enjoyable when distracted with random pain XD. Even if it doesn't which would not make sense I do very much appreciate this video so thank you!

Hey Catoboy, that's great! I wish you the best of luck with your graphic novel series. The pain isn't great though! I sincerely hope these exercises help you, they've helped me over and over again. And I came to the point that I had to use a glove to help me out not feeling pain. These days I feel MUCH better.
Besides, Hollow Knight is a mechanically tough game for the wrist and hands, so I can understand that haha! I feel that using a controller helps a lot not feeling so much pain when gaming.
Do consider getting a vertical mouse as well for general computer stuff, it helps the wrist a bunch.
And you're welcome about the video, I'm glad it helps!

very late to the party but
im an artist, recently taking art more seriously
i never had wrist pains before when drawing as a kid but as of now i can't seem to go a month without needing a cast, last time i couldn't draw for 2 weeks due to wrist pain and right now im sitting with a cast on, i was getting confused what i was doing wrong and why do other artist never have these sort of issues
    then i saw your video
somehow i was surprised to find that you're supposed to take breaks every hour instead of binge drawing for 5h straight as well as stretching it before drawing
will use those as soon as my wrist gets healed up
    thank you!

I remember watching this video 2 years ago and thinking to myself "ha, like I'm ever gonna need this! Art is barely a hobby for me, and how can someone actually hurt their hand drawing!?" Now I'm back here having almost snapped one of my wrist tendons after drawing for a week non-stop... things change don't they?
Thank you so much for the advice :3

oh man, i was just having some wrist and hand pain (the mix of drawing and video games tends to make my hands and wrists get double the trouble), and literally just doing the first stretch immediately relieved the pain. i did all the other stretches as well, and i'm taking a break. i didn't expect the pain to be relieved immediately, my first thought was just to stretch to loosen the tense muscles!

I draw for hours straight with my side of my hand resting on my tablet, I think because it's been resting there so long I get soreness in my pinky and in the space between that and my 4th finger on my dominant hand to the point where it's sore to the touch and is sensitive to cold water.
Going to start trying out these exercises more often to see if it'll help that (and also to help with that scary possibility of carpal tunnel!)

    • @DonCorgi
      @DonCorgi  4 роки тому

I hope you get better soon! Do try and make some of those warm-ups and 10 min breaks every 1 to 2 hours, I find it really helps.
Also try and notice the position you are in when drawing, you might have some strange hand positions and it can cause some pain. Get better!

A desk job is honestly very dangerous but not every artist develops incurable symptoms. If you do the same thing wrong for years then yeah but there are ways to go your whole artistic life without anything serious or plainly at all. Somatic exercises and exercises like the ones in this video are things that really help as well as taking quick breaks and moving around. If the way you are holding your pencil is hurting you over time it might be how you hold your body and your shoulders. If you are holding your posture wrong it may affect the way you hold your pencil or move your strokes. The body is meant to be in nearly every position and not just the same one over and over good or bad. We cannot exert energy forever just like we cannot rest forever. It is all about balance in all things that we do in our lives. Also there are people who have made seventy plus books in their graphic novel series and they all have no hand pain so I believe you can cure your hands and wrists too. I only found out about this stuff recently at the early age of 19 so I got lucky but you can change too :)!!
