artists: please, please take all the tips in this video seriously. if you ever feel pain and tingling, stop and rest--even if your piece is due tomorrow, even if you're almost finished. i tried to push through hand pain this past March to meet a deadline and it resulted in RSIs so severe that i couldn't even button clothes or cook, let alone draw. after nine months (including many sessions of occupational therapy) i'm much better, but i'm still not fully recovered. i'm grateful to have regained most use of my hands, but i still can't animate or sew or use any digital devices for long periods of time, especially without assistive tools. i still get bad days/weeks that interfere with paid and personal work. i thought these injuries wouldn't be a problem in my 20s, but if i could turn back time i would beg myself to prioritize my health, even if it meant letting a client down.
@@AlastairGamesI thought that this kind of thing couldn't happen but now I'm going to be very careful because it seems too unreal that you can hurt yourself by drawing if you told someone I wouldn't believe it and make fun of him
I get it too and I freaking hate it. Sometimes it gets to the point where I have my hand wrapped all the time and certain motions will destroy my wrist
Hello, ex retoucher full time here. Suffered RSI for a very long period. I had to stop working and my liver suffered quite a lot because I took too many painkillers. Be aware people, these problems are real and affect your life in a significant way. Do never underestimate them. I cannot retouch full time anymore, I am mainly a photographer but when I have to retouch myself something, I cry :(
i have fibromyalgia. if i make a mistake and overwork myself, i can be out of commission for weeks and months. it's ridiculous. and everything he talks about in this video, i do and recommend. this goes for everyone! please take care of your hands! please please please. i cannot stress enough how important it is.
Another tip that has worked for me is to get thick grips on pencils and pens. The smaller the width the more your hand has to strain to hold it. Because of covid I cant go out much so I haven t bought any, but even just wrapping some cloth and safety pinning it to fit the pencil will make it easier on your hands.
It's a funny coincidence that on the day this video was uploaded I had to start wearing a brace due to dealing with RSI as well. Thanks for the tips. They're very helpful!
Side note for posture: I got a rocking kneeling chair with a back support for ~$90 off Amazon n LOVE how many options there are to sit. You can sit in the regular position, which is just kneeling, OR you can put your knees up on your desk to support and lean back a little if you’re just watching a tutorial or something OR you can spin it around 180° and lean forward on the back part, which also supports your back. Bonus: you can rock! Which is perfect for ADHD or ppl who like to move around a lot.
I think I have something similar on my right hand because of using my phone soo much for years and including for work. I’m hoping to get it healed here soon. My hand would tingle and hurt after too much use. God bless you man!
Thanks I am a competitive console player and am struggling with my wrist when I play and from what u have said it has really helped me and I haven’t got it since so a big thank you!
Oh man bro, thanks for sharing. I had never heard of this injury before. Thanks so much for shedding some light on this. As someone who draws daily whether it's for myself or clients, as well as being an avid pc gamer (typing and using a mouse) this video was very beneficial and informative to me, and many others. Thanks so much for this. Hey well soon buddy! 🤙
I am a game developer and i am plague with RSI and it will never go away when it's start you never get rid of it! It is also a matter of time before you will get it if you work on a computer. I now use a wacom and 3d mouse but still i wake up yesterday and i cannot use my hand since it is hurting too much. We were not conceive to work on computers.
I wisb that we were taught this in aer school or just srt class while in school. No one ever told me this and now both my wrists hurt like hell. Eaven my non dominant hand. My wrists and elbows click very loudly and honestly feel really bad unlest i do click them
My wrist and hand started hurting today and my mom got carpel tunnel in her early 20s. She also has arthritis in her hands so I’m kind of concerned and now watching videos on it. I’m going to ask about it next time I go to the doctor just to be sure and I also might try getting a wrist brace
thx for this video, my thumb starts feeling so sore after drawing, I wonder is it relate to the wrist injury like yours, definitely need to look more into it! hope you get well soon mate!
I had the same wrist brace and I took it off on the last day that I was supposed to wear it and a girl took it and took out the medal part (which looked like a weird spoon) and she threw it to her friend and her friend went up to the teacher and told him that she had a very old spoon.
i got rsi from constantly gaming for 2 years straight, and when i tried to switch out from playing games , i tried the drill for badminton And sword for 3 hours straight, for 6 months
Its been 3 days who nerves of fingers pain all the way through forearms, cant draw for a min. 13 may 2020 its fckd upp, I hope everyone a speedy recovery
It’s been 5 days for me. Pain has slowly gotten more manageable and comes and goes. I’m really just hoping it is a RSI and not arthritis or something else more serious. Hope you’ve gotten better.
I am a card maker. Right now it's a hobby but i do sell them on Facebook, all proceeds go towards art supplies. When inmake cards i can pend between 3-9 hours on them (all hand made). I do have days where I don't do any though which is good as I get a break till my next lot of orders come through. Alao have yoytuve, twitter, insta, tumblr and Facebook. Facebook i use everyday. I do find my wrists do hurt some days. Currently don't a studio to work in et (will have one in a couple of months time). Right now i create my designs on the kitchen dining table. I also practice anime drawing. I realise this video is over 2 years old but though i'd have a look at the video. Xx
I also have that, and that's why when I see videos from you and ZHC saying you drew for 24 hours or a whole month I really worry but I dont say anything. But I know that no gimmick or amount of views is worth being in pain or a brace for a week or two. Breaks must happen especially for those of us who are prone to these injuries
I was here about six months ago and it progressed to osteoarthritis which is feeling so disappointing. I’m an oil painter and I guess I just overdid it and didn’t rest enough
It’s the first time I got it. I do every thing for my webcomic on the phone and now my hand joints are in pain. Especially the thumb part. 🥺 It’s strange cuz I usually use my pionter finger more but my pointer finger is fine. My iphone actually has a decent grip casing and I use my non- dominant hand to hold it. But this still happened. I guess I really need to give it a rest. 😢 I even have a deadline to catch.
Would you still recommend drawing from elbow for smaller surfaces, for example I want to start digital art on an iPad pro which's screen isnt as large as an a4 or a3 sheet
I just learn recently that cutting sugar and coffee is the number one thing one can do. Coffee grab the nutriments that help regenerate tendons and sugar get you into inflammation so that make perfect sense.
The reason for the pain is your inner fear of greatness. Artists will get RSI because they realize that by working 10+ hrs per day they can become greater than any person around them and that makes them terrified. Therefore the mind creates phantom pain in order to hold you back from achievement. Read John Sarno and recognize that all the pain is in your mind and it will be gone. The more power you give to the pain the worse it becomes. Human beings are strong as hell. They are made for all kinds of crazy hard work. Look at people who do manual hard work all day, completely healthy. The reason is because they are servants.

agreed, it's hard to take seriously until you suffer the consequences.
Hope you're feeling better!

Oh no! Don't destroy your wrist. Take breaks. :)
Me too

this is gret! ty, how would i do this for a digital pen that has buttons? do i just wrap a cloth around it?

I'm an ambidextrous artist so I currently have carpal tunnel in both hands and trust me this freaking hurts like hell
Same but i have tendinitis in both :( I've been drawing w my feet lately
Same, it's been an year for me

Those wrist wraps are a lifesaver. Everytime my arthritis acts up I put that glove on to stabilize my wrist.
Thanks I am a competitive console player and am struggling with my wrist when I play and from what u have said it has really helped me and I haven’t got it since so a big thank you!

Yeah how can you use your elbow small things like eyes, nose, flowers…you can’t swing your arm
Would you still recommend drawing from elbow for smaller surfaces, for example I want to start digital art on an iPad pro which's screen isnt as large as an a4 or a3 sheet
That cellphone claw is real artpeeps.
Thanks for this, trying to prevent it :)
With my work I’m gonna do
That happens to me a lot of drawlings
Hey chief, I F*cking love you TvT thanks for the info
I currently have RSI :/ How long roughly did yours take to heal?
Are you doing better?
This video stops playing half way when other videos play fine
How are you doing today? Are you okay today??
I don’t draw That much that’s why I don’t get that type of injury But thanks for the info cause now I know not to draw that much
it does get sore
why u diddnt pu the brace in the bio the heck
Thank you for this video🥰
good video but the audio sounded roboty at times a bit distracting
What do you do when your elbows/forearms/shoulders hurt from drawing too much? Same kind of things?
Take rest
It's been 30 days and I am still having pain can you tell how long it's going to take ?
I’m scared of getting this
Thanks for it I was drawing with a bad position.now I will draw exactly as u have said.get well soon bro
What sort/type of wrist brace is that?
Is there a particular type to get?
u have to stop it all together one day anyways. Any activity consumes ur joints
hey i like drawing and painting i have elbow pain is this more common? for Artist
Amazing?!
I try and draw with my shoulder, but it’s really hard when I have really small details I have to do. Do I just need more practice?
yeah i also wonder if that works on a drawing tablet with no screen. like, the work area is limited and its just wrist only
ty for these tips, really good
Is it bad that I kind of want to get RSI to show off to my friends
LOL That's pretty bad. There's a name for that, when you want attention by pretending or wanting to be sick. It's called Munchausen's Syndrome.
Draw it, Two! I freakin hurt so much in my arm owww whatc do iv do sorry typing with left hand
Ah yes i have reached this stage
Ok😊😊😊😊
Get well soon ramny I am waiting for your drawings
I just learn recently that cutting sugar and coffee is the number one thing one can do. Coffee grab the nutriments that help regenerate tendons and sugar get you into inflammation so that make perfect sense.
