Agree! Tuffers was a fine spinner. He put plenty of revs on it and has had some big performances. He's like for like with Swann in those aspects.

Robin Smith was an absolute legend... in 1991 (5th test v WI) we had Gooch & Smith who were batting 1 & 2 in the world!
Can't believe Mike Atherton doesn't get many mentions he was a quality player

Robin Smith was my favourite england batsman in the 90's, his only weakness was spin, he was england best player of fast bowling in that era
Actually blown out of proportion a bit. He averaged 45 against Pakistan and scored hundreds against India and Sri Lanka. He was a very good player.

The following week i ran into Darren Gough in the Theatre District Milton Keynes. All three of you are "legends" on the field and much bigger starts in the bar. Brilliant video. Thank-you guys. Oh, Nasser I forgot to mention, can you recall the semi final when you were a student at Durham? Lol.
I'm sorry but there is no way, given the spirit of what this video is about, is Nasser allowed to have Anderson, Botham and Gower. I'd even argue Anderson wouldn't get into a Michael Vaughan team. Nasser needs to pick players who were at their best mid 90's to early 2000's.
Same with Gooch. He retired from test cricket after the 1994/95 Ashes.
I love how every single " my all time eleven" comment has Stuart broad in it.....he truly is underrated.

I remember Harmisons first ball on the Aussie tour going straight to 2nd slip . I was listening on the radio and thought a wicket had fallen 🤣That said , his dismissal of Clarke in 2005 was one of greatest balls ever by an England bowler .

Sam Kershaw id have had Marshall in there....best bowler ever....heading into the latter part of his career until 91, but still a fantastic bowler
@@markpalmer7215 He's one bowler I wish I really could have seen. I was only 4 when he retired so didn't really capture my imagination as a kid. I can't recollect anything. It's only in later years with interviews, documentaries and books i can appreciate his talents, skill and genius but as i said, I can't pick players i never really saw (hence why Gooch only makes the bench in my era for a similar reason.)
It's one of the joys of sport. The myths, legends, heroics of different era's lost to time and memory, replaced by new.
Sam Kershaw ah I misinterpreted your post as you had started watching cricket in 87.
I only really started watching cricket seriously in 1990, and although not at peak powers Marshall was still a top bowler in 91 when WI toured England. Such a clever bowler, pace, Seam & swing....such a shame he is no longer with us.
@@markpalmer7215 Yeah my bad, I've amended it now to '93. I remember going to Old Trafford and watching Lancashire before '93 but lets say I really started to follow cricket after the Ball of the Century and my cricketing love began in earnest.
Marshall is just one of those players who belongs in the Pantheon of Greats. Still talked about with reverence. Gone too soon but an Immortal.
Dravid instead of Dhoni, and give the gloves to Sangakarra - this is test cricket remember...if you want another keeper instead you’d go Mark Boucher

Ian is a much better batter than Stokes.
Nathaniel Marshall give it a rest, he even said that he’s picking them on their best days, and you can’t argue that best stokes is worse using that criteria
Bell would get in ahead of Key and Hussain. But they have to be captain of their own team.

How was Cook such a hard pick. Arguably England's greatest ever.
Pre-injury Steve Finn as a strike bowler is worth a shout. They both picked teams that couldn't win away as they are seam up 85mph merchants.

@@mrkipling2201close between Gough and Harmison, if Jones had a longer career he probably would have got in, injuries were the problem for him. As Benedict said - Flintoff only really had one good series.

It would be interesting to have a 'virtual' test match between the 1981 England side v England's 2005 Ashes side. So many good match ups. Botham v Flintoff, Gooch/Boycott v Strauss/Trescothick, Brearley v Vaughan, Knott/Taylor v Jones, Emburey v Giles, England's seam bowlers of 1981 (Willis, Botham, Dilley, Old, Allott) v Seam bowler's 2005 (Harmison, Flintoff, Jones, Hoggard).

@@jamesleslie6830 I do too!! Richie Benaud made the point at the time that all 3 tests that England won in 1981 the tail enders made all the difference batting wise as well as their bowling! Brearley (to me) a far better captain than Vaughan, Boycott/Gooch not as dynamic as Strauss/Trescothick but very dependable. Knott/Taylor far better than Jones and Botham shades Flintoff. Emburey much better than Giles (a far better all round cricketer) and in the seam bowling Botham/Willis one of the best combinations for England in the last 50 years.

I'd put Flintoff in ahead of Broad as a pure bowler in that line up
David Jones great point, Flintoff for a few years was arguably the best fast bowler in the world.
Great selection... Wasn't Beefy playing until 92-93... Also you might want to reconsider including Root now, after his 2021 season to go along with his handy off-spin and slip catching. Trott is just an unfortunate case of what could have been if not for his broken career, such a shame...

Key looks slimmer now than his playing days. Fk he was big. Love all the archive stuff. Shame they cant show similar - post and pre corona era. Most of the time, its england latest matches plus the same old old best of and masterclass repeats...groundhog day. Bizarre they cant show their own footage like they are now,, because presumably icc want revenue for repeats.

Absolutely agree. Tuffers spun the ball hard and could get you those big 5/6 wicket hauls on the last day of a test match. His fielding and batting were a minus 5 though 😀

I don't know about tuffers because i haven't seen him play but Giles is an absolutely terrible selection.Giles was an below average bowler at best. I would have gone for swann,

both these guys making fun about Giles but he was a fighter , he had limited ability but he just loved challenges. 2005/06 tour of Pakistan he bravely faced steamy spells from Sami and Shaoib Akhtar.

On his day he was unplayable, it's just a shame he was a "confidence and nurturing" player in an era and set up where that kind of thing wasn't available for him.
I'm sure there's a video of Steve Waugh talking about him and basically saying "Yes he could be wayward but we were glad when he didn't get picked".

Easy to say from the outside but when you’re in a losing team it’s hard to pick a bowler who goes for four an over and rarely gets it right, no matter how good those ‘right’ days are

Obviously I'd switch the order around to keep a left-hand/right-hand combination, as far as possible. I'd choose Broad ahead of Anderson because of his better batting. Everyone in my team has scored a century in tests.
how could Nasser even think about picking Moeen Ali? He made his England debut 10 years after Nasser retired!

The lack of tactics in making their selections was very disappointing. They should have focussed on the players that overlap between their two eras and chosen them first. No point in Nas wasting an early pick with Graham Gooch as Key could never have selected him.

Why didn't Nasar just pick Phil Tufnell? He also seems blissfully unaware that Stewart's batting form when keeping was usually awful which is a terrible waste - especially when Jack Russell was one of the best keepers in the world at the time.
