Nasser Hussain says there is no era he would have rather played cricket in than the 1990s! Nas was joined by Darren Gough and Alec Stewart in the Sky Cricket Lockdown Vodcast to discuss the decade and reminisce over their tussles with the great Australia side of the 90s, as well as equally tough tests against the West Indies, South Africa and even Zimbabwe.

yes if the Titanic was the greatest boat trip then the 90s was best English cricket era.
The fact these skysports clowns can even suggest this as a title, is deeply offensive. Deserves a offcom complaint.

I think it was largely down to the opposition attacks. Play a series v Mcgrath and Warne. Next series Pollock and Donald. Then Wasim and Waqar. Then Ambrose and Walsh... Central contracts and selection aside, Stewart, Thorpe, Hick, Ramps, Judge... all would have averaged above 50 if they were playing now. We lost a lot of games in the 90s, but the main reason is that it was a golden era for opposition bowling teams. Every player in the current team would average max 40 against those attacks... We had good players in the 90s. But it was a bad time to be an England batsman... Plus the bowlers had Waugh, Hayden, Richards, Kallis, Tendulkar, Lara etc to deal with.

Uh it was a golden era for every other team than the west indies. Ambrose and Walsh made their debuts in the 80s. And after them, there was literally nothing.

Not to mention in 1994/95 missing the ODI Series finals thanks to losses to Australia A and Zimbabwe.....

You have to feel a bit sorry for the 90's England teams. No central contracts, picked and dropped policy and outstanding players and teams around the world.
The 90's was England's worst decade since the Second World War. Got hammered everywhere. The first test series I watched was against South Africa in 1998 and, while it was a great series, we were lucky to scrape a win. Took Nasser and a new attitude to turn it around from 2000 onwards, with the comprehensive beating of The West Indies that summer to the 2005 Ashes win.
Hugh Masson WI won the first test of that series convincingly. How is that series win “comprehensive”??
@@flch95 Because they came back to win 3-1 and bowled the West Indies out for 50 odd twice. That's how.
I’d say the late 1980s were worse. The 1989 ashes was the most depressingly one sided series that I can remember, especially since the Australians were quite a moderate team, certainly nowhere near as good as their teams from 1993 onwards.
We were lucky in 1998 though. The South Africans had the better team
@@jstreete the period from 93' to 95' , the post Gooch era England was the worst phase in English cricket . Our management was bad, we lacked structure and the rest of the world were far ahead of us .
@@sirlordhenrymortimer6620 93 was a very bad year certainly, but 1994 and 1995 don't seem so bad to me - creditable series draws against South Africa and West Indies, both of whom had significantly better bowling attacks than England, and while England lost the two winter tours, they performed well at times against much stronger teams (e.g. at Barbados and Antigua, and even Trinidad until the last innings, and Sydney and Adelaide). And some good players were coming through - Gough, Thorpe, Caddick most obviously. Of course they were a pretty moderate team, but in 1988-89 they were a real shambles, and while in 1988 they were always going to lose quite heavily, they should not have collapsed so badly against the Australians in 1989 (barring rain, that series could easily have finished 6-0). The real mistake of the mid-90s was choosing Illingworth as coach. Atherton's wish to pursue a youth policy and stick with it would have been the better course .
The top tip when watching England in the 90s was always buy a ticket for the first day of the first match of the series. Reason? Because at 10:59 England were always in with a shout...
The 90’s were the best in terms of the international teams....great fast bowlers, great leg spinners, great batsmen but none of them played for England. Pak, Aus, WI had very strong teams.
And sri lanka won the world cup out of no where.
All teams were very competitive albeit Pakistan Australia South Africa and Sri Lanka were better in mid 1990s than India NZ England and the West Indies
Zimbabwe were actually decent back then too

2010s is the best in terms of limited over cricket and probably generally. They were top of all of the rankings at the same time after all

I grew up watching these guys play for England! I think A Stewart is the best wicket-keeper I have seen. His resolve his stability he was just a rock!!

Cricket overall was great in the 90s but certainly not from an English international cricket perspective... it was the dark days
As an Indian I agree...I mean I don’t think anyone here saw those matches as something of a serious challenge even if we didn’t win much in England. Above all no one ever got excited when we won a match against England!

Tuffers would get in probably too due to the lack of quality spinners at present, Ramps was a better red ball player than any of our middle order bar Root too even tho he didn’t succeed in the 90s
Gooch, Beefy and Gower all played into the 90s technically too even if their peek was the previous decade
@@userjim83 I'd hardly call Tuffers a quality spinner! Atherton might get in given how poor the top order is at the moment, but he can hardly be considered a legend with an average of under 40. Only truly world class players in that era were Stewart and Gough in my humble opinion.

Early 2010's was easily England's peak. Strauss, Cook, Trott, Pietersen, Collingwood, Bell, Prior, Bresnan, Broad, Swann, Anderson - what a magnificent side with names that just roll off the tongue!
Agreed thats a great England side, but it ain't a patch on the 50's. Also you could still fit a few in there from the 90's. Id easily have Graham Thorpe in there for Collingwood or Bell. Class player. If thorpey played now he'd average 55.

Great hearing these guys I do think England had a below par decade with shades of momentary progress that was illusory. The 90s had probably the best bowling attack ever with Wasim, Waqar, Ambrose, Donald, McGrath, Warne, Pollock, Walsh...wow a classic combo of pace, swing seam, bounce and spin. The 2010s have probably been the best decade for England.
I have to say I loved the 90s and that team, and remember all of the achievements against the odds of Ath, Thorpe, Gooch, Stewy, Nass, Goughy, Tuffers, Caddick, Cork with enormous affection.
But that's not to say when we finally won the ashes I wasn't delirious and grateful. You never thought the clouds would ever lift...
also best decade for international Bowlers in history, every team had at least 1, sometimes 2 even 3 all time great bowlers.

As a kid i have a memory of watching Stewart open with Nick Knight . Stewart used to cry 'Knight Stay' after pushing d ball towards a fielder.

Love the banter. Whatever anyone says about which era is the better, for me the era that these guys played in cricket had this sense of richness and intensity that doesn't match today regardless of all the media and theatre today.
Memories of Alec playing Waqar and Wasim with more ease than anyone else, respect.

Alec was highest run getter in tests during the 90s, ahead of Lara, Sachin, Steve Waugh etc.

I am Australian born in 1972 so those dominant Australian sides of the 1990s and past the halfway point of the ensuing decade were more or less my peers - in age, rather than cricketing ability obviously, but this is why it means so much to me ... Hussein, Atherton, Stewart. Thorpe and Darren Gough would surely have to be the best 5 players from either side in Ashes history to have played in a significant number of series never to have tasted Ashes victory. Mark Waugh (5 series), Ian Healy and Mark Taylor (6 each) and Michael Slater (4 series) never suffered Ashes defeat. Steve Waugh played in all 8 successive Ashes series victories from 1989 to 2002, but he lost the first Ashes series he played in in 1986-87 when he was only 21. Shane Warne too played in 7 Ashes victories but lost in 2005 while McGrath played in 6 Ashes series victories and technically never tasted Ashes defeat given he didn't play in either of the 2 tests that England won in 2005. Even Bradman played in 2 losing Ashes series, while being victorious in 5, also drawing in 1938 to retain the urn. The most recently retired Australian player to have played in a winning Ashes series in England is Ricky Ponting, who retired in late 2012 and was part of 5 Ashes series victories in total. Although we retained the Ashes last year (2019), none of the likes of Michael Clarke, Mitchell Johnson, David Warner, Steve Smith, Brad Haddin, Michael Hussey, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon have been part of a winning series in England.

Fantastic viewing! I started watching/playing in 1999, I remember the purple patch Stewart talk's about in 2000 against W.Indies and Zimbabwe and these guys too were also my first English Cricketing heroes. Bit of a shame that the infrastructure around the team wasn't so good then, the potential to do well was there. But at the same time, those failings have also led to where the England team is now, well done in hindsight :).
That 2000 W.Indies team wasn't that great, certainly not compared to the one from a few years before.
@@phantomwhite7972that's true. Although in that series in 2000, Walsh and Ambrose were still bowling brilliantly. They nearly won a couple of tests in that series on their own, due to how great they were bowling.

As an Aussie without pay TV back then, I only saw the English cricket team when they played Australia, and the 90’s in that context was a grim decade for England. So the title of this video strikes me as a bit strange.
But it was great to hear from Darren Gough. To me, he was a lion-hearted inspiration in an average bowling attack.

The 90s team are fondly remembered because of the characters, Athers..Stewart..Judgie..Goughie..Nas...Devon..Tuffers..Jack Russell...Illy....Bumble..Hickie..Ramps..Gus..Caddick..Thorpy..all came alive through Sky TV with Bob Willis, Charles Coleville, Henry Bloefeld, Geoff Boycott...Ian Botham . Great days..a dysfunctional team but on the journey to better success which came in the 2000s
Stewart is underrated...a great player in an average side
I have been watching England Cricket since the early 60's, and IMO there is no doubt that it has never been better then it has over the last 10 years. england have always had good players, especially in the batting and wicket keeper departments but has never experienced such depth in wicket taking bowler bowlers, fast scoring batsman, and competent fielders. England have always had their moments over the decades, but only over weakened or disadvantaged sides, or on the back of great individual performances. Never in my experience, has an England side contained so many potential match winners, as well as a depth in all round talent, as it does today.

Bowling attacks of the 90s were far far better than now.
All cricket from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 00’s, was magnificent but it’s a different era from 2010 onwards.
Alec Stewart's birthday is 8/4/63. He scored 8463 test runs.

England 90s test team, were outplayed and thumped at home by New Zealand and fell to the bottom of the test rankings in 1999. Atherton, Butcher, Hussian, Ramps, Hick, Stewart, not one of them average over 40 for their career. Even one of the 'perceived' weaker batsman, from the golden generation, Collingwood, is leaps ahead of the the 90s lot. Only world class player from this generation was Thorpe. Gough and Caddick were a nice partnership and stewart a good glove-man, you could say. A few of them have made a good transition into the media world, and maybe that has given us rose tinted glasses, but be under no illusion, this was a terrible period for english cricket.

You have to be honest..Being an English batsman, especially an opener was the hardest job in cricket in the 90's. Players like Alec Stewart and Atherton were facing Akram, Waqar, Ambrose, Walsh, Donald, McGrath at their peak. Then you had the likes of Murli, Kumble, Shane and towards the end of the 90's entered Akhtar and Saqlain.

Present day? We've been average at best for the last 4-5 years. 2005 was amazing yeah but we only really had had a few good years at the end of the 2000s & start of the 2010s.
Used to see Viv Richards wandering around my old little town of Rishton....seemed really odd to see a huge West Indian wandering over the canal bridge on the high street.

This was awesome! The late 80s wasn't great when we lost home series to Pakistan, West Indies and Australia, but that series in West Indies in 1990 was a turning point of sorts. If Jack Russell could have gotten a few more runs then Alec could have opened all the time. The central contracts was interesting, but I think Hick and Ramps had enough chances to shine at test level.
The 90s, i believe was the end of the old boy network that English cricket suffered for so long with! OK, there was the odd great working-class player like Trueman and Illingworth but after look what players came along after central contracts, many of them working class! Anderson, Flintoff, Harmeson, Tuffers etc!
Lost Every Ashes series at home and away, got trashed in India, and the West Indies (1994, 1998), couldn't win a test series at home from 1991-1995 (Nzl at home in '94 an exception), couldn't defeat Zimbabwe in 96/97, Sri Lanka started to defeat them home and away, and yet could this possibly be their best decade? Good that Nas acknowledged that their team was miserable in the '90s in both the major formats of the game. Although I would not consider them to be the worst travelling team in the 90s. That honor goes to the Indian team who did not win any overseas test part from a solitary win against Sri Lanka in 1993.

England's test side was the best from 2009-13 they won ashes series in Australia 3-1 after 24 years and in 2012 winning series in india after 28 years
England in the 1990's were a good side actually. But like they say they lacked central contracts. Headley, Gough, Fraser and Cork all average less than 30 in tests and if they would have been managed better all of them would have got 300+ test wickets. Also Hick and Ramprakash averaged 50 in FC cricket. Considering back then the players playing county cricket were internationals. Those are incredible stats.
The selection policy hampered us hugely in the 1990's as well. Someone would get picked for their debut and if they didn't perform, they weren't picked again. I think that Hick and Ramprakash didn't fulfill their potential in test cricket because of a fear of failure. They were picked for the test side, played a couple of games, then they were dropped, and that happened about half a dozen times. If they were told to relax and that they would be given a run of games and wouldn't be dropped, I think that they would have done much better for England. In fact when Ramprakash was given an extended run in the test team in 1998, for the West Indies tour, then the 1998/99 Ashes series, he performed a lot better than at any stage beforehand.

Newer fans will never know the joy of a back to the wall draw, the odd moment of glory. Headstrong cricketers like Athers, Nas etc. Loved the 90s.
I often feel that Nasser doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Most people are agreed that the era under his stewardship wasn’t a particularly good epoch in English cricket, although, the results often didn’t reflect the individual performances and at times the collective team effort. Nasser, in my opinion was the catalyst for the change in mindset and the more professional approach adapted to keep pace with the fast evolving landscape of world cricket. Australia were the first side to start playing in a manner that is now the norm. The improved run rate and the introduction of dedicated fitness coaches, combined with advances in dietary requirements and modern training methods that took advantage of technology in the form of bowling machines and the ability to study footage to assist technique and identify a players weakness.
Well done Nasser, and thank you for your dedication and your service to English cricket. Thank you, Sir!
Not that greatest decade but I grew up loving Gooch, Athers, Smith, Hick, Lamb, Stewart, Thorpe, Hussain, Gough, Caddick, Malcolm and a few others! Really carved my love for the game.

In 90s England had 2 players I loved to watch Gough and Robin. Selectors did well in case of Gough,but destroyed Robin. Both used to approach their game like a Pakistani, aggressive and passionate lol.
I think the 00’s and 10’s were the best era even though England didn’t do well in couple of ashes and the last tour of the West Indies.

2010s easily. Won t20 World Cup and World Cup. Won an away ashes and a couple home ashes. Beat India in India Became world no1 test team. Built a absolutely world class test team. Cook, Strauss, trott, pietersen, bell, colinwood, prior, Swann, broad, Anderson, tremlet.

90s was great for every thing
Highlight of the 90s for a Pakistani: Pakistans two consecutive away test series victories in England in 1992 and 1996.
No, it wasn't the greatest decade and England cricket was boring at times but always loved watching Gough bowl. He was aggressive and entertaining. Stewart had a unique technique and so it was fun watching him too.
The 2010-2020 era has been by far the greatest decade of English cricket. Beat australia india away from home and went unbeaten in 3 series away in south africa also notable wins away in sri lanka and of course 2 one day trophies to start and end the decade in amongst a lot of pain and anguish but this is still england lol it wouldn't be the same team if they didn't make it hard for themselves aka 2015 world cup and the 5-0 and 4-0 test debacles in australia but watching england lift the 2019 world cup was the sporting highlight of my life

Not only England struggled against Australia in 90s and early 2000s ,I reckon every one had a tough time against Aussies. SA re admitted in 92 and when they when the first series against Aussies in 2008, after 16 years. Pakistan too, after win in 94 had to wait for another 20 years to win a series. Sri Lanka had to wait for 17 years after 1999. West Indies and New Zealand fared no better. Sides have to wait for 15 -20 years, incredible! Even in India too they were by far the most convincing side to visit in that era lost hard fought 1-2 in 2001 only to win in 2004 2-1. They were the strongest side to grace the cricketing field!

This was my teen years and fondly remembered but after Bazball, 2011, 2005...how is this even a debate? Maybe characters like Malcolm, Gough, Robin Smith etc were bigger. Flintoff, KP and Stokes are the talismen for me...true athletes and legends.
