EDIT AGAIN: Hey, I keep forgetting this video exists! I’m grateful for all the views and subs, even though, alas… my account isn’t eligible for monetization 🤣 Ah well! Until the copyright holder gets mad at me, this fine film can stay up. (Even tho I’m not the only one who has it uploaded)
I try to heart or at least acknowledge as many comments as I can. I’m not really stepping in unless I see something really messed up, and me hearting a comment doesn’t necessarily mean I agree or endorse the opinion, just that I appreciate the commenter’s time and engagement.
EDIT 2: Hey again guys! I still intend to figure out a way to get this captioned! I’m in the middle of moving house right now and it’s super stressful, so I’m not able to focus on that right now.
HOWEVER! I found the DVD on Amazon! Shattered Innocence a.co/d/5MQX1Pv it’s only $10 USD and probably captioned. I don’t know for certain but it might be worth looking into.
    EDIT: RIP Melinda Dillon!
Hey guys, I don't know why automatic captions aren't available for this movie. I've set the language settings to English for both the video and the title, I have no idea why YT isn't trying to caption it. Part of the reason I uploaded it was in the hopes that it would have automatic captions, because sometimes I just can't understand the dang ol' dialogue. So sorry!
I MIGHT try to subtitle it myself if there’s any demand. I’ve never done it before but I have transcribed long sound files before so it can’t be THAT complicated (famous last words lol)

Guys this is a typical 80s early 90s movie. Y’all ain’t got no compassion. Things were different back then. There was no internet or « story time « vlogs. A lot of things that movies show now were based on stories back then or maybe you knew someone who knew someone who did. Most small town girls were naive and just like her.Have a heart. There were no cell phones or computers. But, what this young woman had were loving parents and a support system. But, she couldn't see it past her materialism. She wasn't that naive. There were instances in this movie where she lied to get what she wanted even though the porn producers and drug dealer boyfriend tried to shield her from the pitfalls of her decision. Her own mother admitted that she was stubborn to a fault. It's sad she died so young. But, she started at 18 and died at 20. I'm surprised it only took two years for her to get to her breaking point.

I've recently learned that selfish people actually hate themselves, people assume that if you're selfish, you love only yourself, but it's actually the opposite and I've been very selfish. Still learning how to love myself and I haven't gotten very far.

This movie is based on the real true tragic story of Shauna Grant (real name Colleen Marie Applegate). Grant moved with her BF to Cali, started posing for nude magazines, was warned by he photographer who first hired her to get out of nude modeling quickly, because when all of the magazines had used her, the only thing left for her would be hardcore movies. Her and her BF broke up and he went to the army. Before his induction, he informed some residents of her small town that Applegate was involved with pornography, which caused her family much embarrassment. In the Frontline documentary, he refused to speak about his relationship with her, except to say that he no longer cared about her. She started doing movies, but then developed a cocaine addiction, later killed herself by suicide in 1984. Her parents used their proceeds from selling the movie rights to pay for her tombstone.

@@fembotprincess1 - Absolutely! Most kids hit their teens and feel that the grass is greener on the other side of all of those parental rules (not realizing that there are rules no matter where they go or what they attempt to do-and the rules also come with bills). They can't figure out that they might as well swallow their pride and return home because their parents already know what they've just found out: it's hard out there and it's better to be in a place where you can fail but land on a softer spot; where you're allowed to try again with a far less harsher judgment than you would get from strangers.

I've noticed that there's a lot of symbolism using her suitcases. First, as she's packing to leave the family home for California, her mother is tossing the clothes out as fast as Pauleen was putting them in. Then, when she moves in with Nora, she puts the two suitcases on the end of the water bed ready to unpack. Later, she unpacks at Mel's Palm Springs home after putting them on his bed and then finally, at the end, she has them on the end of the bed and is furiously packing them and finaly, just before she kills herself, she kicks those suitcases off the bed. I think they are in this film to symbolize how Pauleen never really had a permanent and loving home, even with her family in Kansas and that ultmately, she ended up with those same two cases holding the same clothes and her high school yearbook that stayed with her from the beginning. Just my two cents, fwiw.

Yes, in her last exchange before she took her life, she declared, "All I have are two suitcases!"
However, I don't think it symbolizes that she didn't have a permanent, loving home (though her home didn't seems to be dripping with love), but that she had nothing to show for her choices and selling her soul in the pursuits of her dreams other than what she started off with: two suitcases. Even with making $200 to over $500 per day/session, she had nothing.
Relationships are most valuable, and other than her family and that guy Mel, everyone else that she surrounded herself with only wanted to keep her on that hamster wheel of that miserable industry.

This is what happens sometimes to children that have been abandoned by a parent during their childhood. She began to debasing herself, and really was looking for a father not a boyfriend. She was very emotionally immature because she was traumatized. Very sad story.
I also had an absent father, who lived in my home as a child. I think my father called me once on the telephone. I’m in my 50s now and that still impacts my feelings but I realize it wasn’t about me it was about their dysfunction. Their parents dysfunction.
I hope people see this movie and have compassion for the young lady who felt so lost in life and felt that was the only way she could get the attention. She thought she needed, but was very wrong that it cost her life. You can’t change those actions they don’t go away.

Pauline's mom not saying "I love you" reminds me of the tv movie The Karen Carpenter Story. It has been forever since I've seen the movie but I do remember a scene where Karen's therapist asked her mom when was the last time she told Karen that she loved her. Mom answered with an irritated attitude, "Oh Karen knows that we love her. We don't need to say it,". She completely missed the point that a lot of us *need* to hear those words. They're reassuring and provide a lot of comfort in this often dark and scary world. Pauline needed to hear those three words from her often judgemental and controlling mother. Would it have changed anything?? We'll never know but it's obvious that Pauline felt unloved and alone in what is a seedy and horrible world full of bottom feeders.
Just as a side note...the actress who played Pauline's friend Nora is absolutely gorgeous.

    • @cellytron
      @cellytron  Рік тому +3

Oh wow… this comment is kind of blowing my mind, because “she knows we love her, we don’t need to say it” is kind of the attitude my own mother had. Not all the time, but sometimes when I was feeling really low, or we’d just had a fight and I just really, really needed reassurance that my mom still loved me, a lot of the times she’d roll her eyes or say “what a dumb question” or whatever.
But then again, my dad never said it either but I absolutely never had any doubt that he loved me. 🤷‍♀️ So it’s a really complicated situation, and it is that way for everybody…
And you might be right, if the mother had made sure Pauline knew she loved her, instead of that “yeah”… maybe she would have felt like she could go home again.
I guess that’s what makes a good, or at least engaging movie, that you can sit and think “but what if this, what if that?”, heh. 😄

I appreciate everybody's comments...I just think that Mom not returning Pauline's "I love you" is cold and misguided. The teen years are hard and volatile enough as it is without worrying that your parents don't love you. Some of us really need that reassurance. Yes, the drug and porn industries are horrible and they prey on the young, lost and vulnerable. They chew people up and then spit them out. That goes without saying. I just found Pauline's mom cold.
Again, I appreciate all comments. That's the beauty of the comment section...it opens up a dialogue and can get you thinking. 🥰🥰

I grew up as a young woman during this time in the 80s. It was so awful, and filled with Decadences. That was only exacerbated when every household had access to a VCR. Methamphetamine and cocaine dominated the scene, and pretty much everyone was doing it, and it completely destroyed who you were mentally. But with the deluge of VCRs came all the video rental stores just bulging at the seams with pornography of young girls that looked just like us. Pretty soon all of our boyfriends we’re addicted to not only the drugs, but the porn and many of us young girls felt we had to live up to these actresses or else our boyfriends wouldn’t be interested in us. I grew up in Riverside, California, and I watched nose drugs ruin so many friends. Many are still not the same 40 years later. When I think of that scene I cringe.
