Watched this for the 2nd time. Excellent movie based on the true story of a strong heroic woman . Her story is an inspiration to all women . Judith Light was fabulous in this role. She is a great actress.
Judith Light was fabulous as her role of Barbara Noel. Step #1 Admit you have an addiction. Step #2 Seek help (most of us can't do it alone) Step #3 Hang on as you go through the hell that it will take to overcome your addiction. Never give up and fight for what you believe in.
1:29:00 Wow! Her statement during the tribunal was so powerful. The way she got up, walked to the doctor and addressed him head on. I only wish the real courts could be like this.
Me too. Our courts are far from providing true justice. If the 1st law office she went in knew about psychiatric health providers they would know that studies indicate 25% of psych providers have a romantic/sexual relationship with their patients. Researchers estimate that the number is much higher but because of the reprocussions psych providers lie on anonymous questionnaires.

I was a young intern in the early 90’s & was trained by a psychiatrist who did ab reactions (sodium pentothal) with patients in the 1970’s. He did one in the hospital and I got to participate. I thought it was unethical the first time I saw it and I wonder how many patients have been traumatized by such treatment. I practiced for 30 years and am retired now. Always keep safe. Thank you for sharing YOUR story Ms. Noel! Awesome. I too, am a victim of child sexual abuse at the hands of close family "christian friend" that my mother refused to believe anything happened, which delayed my getting any type of help until I was well on my own, and an adult. It was in my childhood medical records that my own pediatrician, or MD suspected sexual abuse and confronted my parents, which they strongly denied, and abruptly left the office! I found out this out years later when my MD at Kaiser got my childhood records!! IT confirmed my memories of the abuse. I suffered for 4o years of depression as this pedophile and his son, whom he was grooming to be like him, had tortured me for hours, and had accidentally knocked me unconscious, but thought they had killed me, and were preparing to bury me alive, when I came to. The wife/mother of these two cleaned me up, threatened me into silence holding my hands over red hot stove burners. I developed a fear of being in the kitchen and of hot stove burners for decades! I could not cook until I was well into my 40's. I was 9 years old when this happened to me! I am now 60. I also became an alcoholic. I have not had a drink in 21 years! I am much better now and have finally beat those horrific memories. Thanks for the movie of victory. My tormentors were never punished for what they did to me. Went on to harm others, killing others, were finally caught, both of them died in prison, the wfe/mother committing suicide. They are all gone now. When I remembered fully all my memories I tried to report it to police though it was past the statute of limitations for the law in my State. I found out this other information about my attackers. They eventually got theirs, and the detective said it was not my fault. I did have survivors guilt for a long time, but am finally okay. Again thanks for sharing this story and it is gratifying that this woman had the courage to do what she did. I am proud of her and proud of all victims who survive their initial attack and go on to see their perpetrator punished in some way. Their has to be a recompense for what has happened, other wise the suffering, terror and pain is for nothing. Then the biggest part of healing is forgiving the attacker, and forgiving yourself and moving on. Forgiveness allows a person to finally heal from the pain, sadness and bitterness and angry feelings and let go of all the fear too. Finally once I did that, I could finally live again! My prayers go out to all victims of sexual abuse and rape. IT is tough to survive it, and live. I advise to find a good therapist and pray and not give up on yourself. Love yourself. Peace, Michelle
I’m so sorry about these horrible things that happened to you. Good Lord. It is astounding and awful how absolutely horrific people can be. But. It is also astounding how strong you are. It’s completely normal for it to take many years to heal, or even begin to heal. And, you survived. You got through that abuse, and have been so incredibly strong to keep going, and to keep healing. For years. And then incredibly brave to share with others, like us. Thank you for that, and thank you for being able to love yourself into healing. I hope you are incredibly proud of yourself. You should be.
So sorry you went through such horrible and horrific things.People can be so messed up, glad you wee able to get background info on them m HUGS go out to you,I was a victim also if sexual abuse by a family member, my mother refused to hear the truth. We were nit close.
PTSD is not just relegated to war/combat or acts of physical violence/rape prolonged exposure as a child to a parent or parents who are verbally abusive or emotionally abusive as well as being indifferent to our needs can result in Complex PTSD. What a horrendous act this psychiatrist did to a patient who trusted him!
I have PTSD from watching my Mom on Life Support for 24 hours the machine was worthless she was deceased the entire time .. The hospital had me wait 24 hours to let her go.. 😢
I am glad she found that decent guy who loved and took care of her. It’s much easier to recover from trauma when we have loving person on our side. Better together.
Lovely movie!! Love Judith Light's acting in any movie. It's so unfair that the doc didn't get punished with imprisonment for what he did to all those women. But I'm glad Barbara got her life back!!
I LOVE Judith Light! I don't see how a man can truly call himself a man if he has to force himself upon a defenseless woman. This is why I teach self-defense to women! The first thing, always be aware of your surroundings, ALL OF THE TIME -
Good men don't understand the evil that lurks in 50-90% of the male population. Forcing yourself on a woman, or manipulating her to think it's all about love when it isn't, is more the norm than good guys can understand. That's awesome that you teach self defense but you should understand that you are only helping 1% of the population. Most rapes occur after the abuser has gained the trust of their wife, girlfriend, neighbor, church member, etc.
We need to teach women to never trust anyone, identify red flags and avoid being alone with males. Don't go to male doctors. Don't have a male employer.....I am volunteering at a thrift store that is a church's women's ministry. We opened during COVID-19 and it was just church people. Now that we've been around for a few years and tourists are coming back to town, we are experiencing a lot of uncomfortableness when non-Christian males come into the shop. I think we should shut it down. I don't like being vulnerable.
.....(I'll probably stop volunteering.....either way, this is what 50-90% of the male population is doing to women. Whether we get attacked by one specific person or just take an early retirement, shut down our business, quit volunteering, etc - Women are not free to do anything in a man's world. We just get treated like the bedroom and kitchen slave, the minimum wage customer service employee or whatever it is that keeps us completely under the control of the males in our life. There isn't a single woman alive who isn't being abused by patriarchal authority.
😇💜 I was RAPED in a hospital, and was given medication ( I was overly medicated ) and the guy that DID THIS TO ME belonged on the psychic Ward !!! This happened to me in broad daylight, and just what happened to Judith I woke up for a few seconds and I TOLD HIM NO, but I was so groggy I fell back asleep. Even if I went to self defense classes NO ONE in my situation could have defended themselves !!! I'm a STRONG WOMAN, and I can GUARANTEE YOU if I was NOT overly medicated I WOULD HAVE FOUGHT THIS GUY !!! NO MEANS NO !!!
@@jenniferesser8249 Hi Jennifer - I'm sincerely sorry and horrified about what you have been through. I can truly relate. As you can see, I had the same gut reaction to this comment.....(and in the real world - We have a karate studio in my neighborhood that offers free self defense for women. It's in the same building that has a horrible reputation for what goes on upstairs. I live in a backwoods ghetto. I don't know the connection with the karate studio and what's going on upstairs, but the building has that reputation. I think the free self defense guy is fronting or covering for his associate? Because why else would you put your karate studio in that building? I do not trust these "I teach self defense" guys at all!!!
Really good movie but a sad story. I'm glad that Barbara Noel didn't give up the fight and got her life back together. Sadly, the doctor didn't go to prison. That's where he belonged.
@naturalkinkycurlymarie7496 Well maybe now with the advances in DNA technology no rapist or murderer can feel safe if he left a sample of his or her DNA behind. A lot of cold cases are being solved.
This movie is an eye opener ..... Its a wake up call for everyone to those who are a victim of abused, and to those professional who abused in their position.....
So glad that Barbara saw this through to the bitter end. No, the quack calling himself a doctor didn't do jail time, but he has to walk the walk of shame wherever he goes, instead of being the glorified superstar of the psychiatric field. And that's GOTTA hurt!
But he is still a superstar of the APA, unfortunately. He was invited to their annual conferences, they were telling people he "retired" when his license was actually "relinquished" as he allowed that to happen instead of the licensing board questioning him when he was reported due to the overwhelming evidence against him. The DA should have prosecuted him as well.
Once I went to this dirty old man doctor and told him I was depressed. He said its from an affair of the heart. Then he said dont worry you're pretty with lovely hair and he started touching my back and made sort of grunting noises. I froze but then escaped out of the surgery, it was a very creepy experience but I knew no one in Ireland in 1988 would believe a woman. I was only 23 years old at the time. He was disgusting.
So many of us have come face to face with predators. Even escaping one can haunt you. As a young woman in a new city I went to see a GP, it was an evening surgery and deserted. When I saw this doctor he started to ask me about my sex life when I was there for a neck injury. It makes you feel trapped and frightened.
An intelligent, sensitive and captivating film, with a moving Judith Light. The cowardice of the authorities concerning the eminent psychiatrist-criminal, is predictable, but still so revolting. Male sexual violence, is the cancer of Humanity, which destroys so many women, teenagers, children, as well as other men, from all walks of life. Predators, especially those with a position of authority, always know which women to target, especially those who are intrinsically insecure. We never question the word of people robbed for example, but that of victims of sexual crimes, is always questioned. Always. To protect rapists. Strength to all victims of sexual violence, especially those who have not been able to overcome, the psychotraumatic consequences, of this unbearable violence. 😔💔
Years ago I was introduced by a friend to a Psychiatrist when I was invited along to his apartment to a party he was holding for one of several of his young men friends, who's birthday it was. The party attendees were all young males around 17 or just turned 18. The short version from the mouth of this Dr was he Hypnotised SA young boys to help them deal with the trauma, and had his way with each one. He was in his 60' I was 25. i was the only female at the party. I never went back, but I reported him to the police and certain person's in the profession. They did nothing about it except to cause me problems, adding to a lot of torment. But I'm strong and my mind is too. My spirit never fails me. I felt the actress played a great part in her role. A well written, directed and produced film. Thank-you for the memories !! 😢 Thank-you for putting it out.
Always enjoy Judith Light's performances and I cant say I have ever seen her in a bad film. I am in a different kind of situation at the moment, where no one seems to believe me, not the police of the Housing Association. No one is saying I have made it all up but they all have a different opinion and wont take what I say as the truth. It has worn me down, but i wont give up. Thanks for sharing this excellent film and I must must compliment FilmRise Movies for the excellent quality, no zooming in and out.
Judith Light is an icon from the 80's . I agree with some of the statements below that this movie needs to be shared , as the must be thousands of women out there going through the same story, specially when it refers to powerful and highly professional positioned men. This movie really touched my heart, Judith Light acting is brilliant , as in all her movies ....Also very touching story , as in the 80's and 90's there was a lot of repression and very lack ways to prove stories like this. This movie is a masterpiece, WELL DONE BARBARA !!!
So glad to have discovered Judith Light, she was fantastic in this powerful movie. Sadly countless women all round the world experience this type of despicable treatment at the hands of so-called professionals. Old Boys Networks cover up all sorts of creepy behavior by these men.
Judith light powerhouse! Stoneface when facing adversity. Love her portrayal of that strong woman who continued to fight against a disgusting man who thought he was entitled to a womans body. He had to learn how wrong he was!
This movie came up on my feed at a very important moment in my life. I casually watched it because I admire Judith Light. I am in a fight with doctors at a hospital. It is not a question of SA, but it is about doctors abusing their power against a sick, disabled woman who is poor (by Western standards). I have been inspired to keep being strong and continue the fight for justice. Thank you for uploading this movie. Bless you and all those men and women who do not give up standing for what is right and inspiring others to do likewise.
It's really sad, disgusting,a crime against the law and medical boards for not doing anything with the devil of a psychiatrist, after so many women came forward against him!! There would never be that many women who are total strangers to one another that have the same testimony, facts, story!!
Starting to watch this movie, I found out that rapping is what doctors psychiatrist might do, parallel to his job. I’m from Moldova and recently a doctor psychiatrist was convicted for raping a lot of women in the treatment facility. All women were mentally disabled. It took a few years till all evidence was gathered and all witnesses could speak and trusted!
A lot of powerful agencies protect their own. Look at our Congress and other government agencies that have indemnity against their actions. This is also true for professionals as well.
The main problem people have is not understanding a woman that has been raped suffers from shock. A person in shock doesn't scream. There is no single way a person, woman or man that has been raped behaves or acts. First they are trying to comprehend what just happened. Then how do they want to deal with it, how can they deal with it. There really needs to be more trust and better ways of dealing with the victims of rape.
Not if you are a male victim of rape and happen to live in Ireland" We are in the dark ages with mental health in Ireland. It is also a money-making racket for the unregulated...
It makes a person wonder if rape god as a focal point of worshipping set the stage for the uncertainty when a child or adult mentions a mere mortal did rape them.
'Rape is Not a Recreational Sport!" It is a personal violation of a man, woman,or child! It is very difficult to erase the memory of a personal violation.God Bless and Protect the victim:s of rape.🙏💜🙏❤️

That man violated his trust with her and took advantage of a defenseless woman. He has lost his license. Good. True justice was served . KC Comanche tx
He is not the only male psychiatrist who has not been up to no good. UK a Paedophile I think he was and he was high up in education oversight. Another one in other country was in affair with fellow married psychiatrist woman, and was jailed for murdering his wife. Makes you wonder.
That has been my experience. Some in my life went to their graves being idolized by people who knew them and yet they almost destroyed other people's lives. EVIL!
She deserves a Special Award for her lead roll in this movie, womemn Don’t ever let a male doctor examine you Without a NURSE present , even with your kids too ,very important
Exactly. That creeped me out too, how there was never a nurse present in any of these sessions. The lech had complete monopoly over the place. I'd never entrust myself to any doctor in those circumstances.
This film is real, Some Doctors are very Uncoth in their behaviour towards other sex patients. Bcuz this happened to my wife, who went with our sons to 64 years Doctor as i was late with my office work. I reached just 5 minutes,,i heard her shouting from the doctor's clinic. I rushed to see her, this doctor was putting his hands on her thighs. I got angry & give his sound beating & phoned the police, the police took that doctor to precinct,Lots of ladies patients lodged against that disgraceful Doctor. the I.M.A had strpped of his doctor's degree.
I’ve had many encounters with many physicians , mostly because I’ve had bad luck with my Heath m many surgeries . And I’ve only had one doctor say something that I would call mildly inappropriate .
I am french and I just love Judith Light. The french mostly know her because of "who's the boss ?" which was hugely popular over here. I didn't know she sang too, her rendition of "Skylark" is so beautiful I had goose pimples listening to it. A very talented lady. I recognised Amy Aquino (in the role of Jeannie Wilcox) straightaway, she played Tess McGill's (Melanie Griffith) secretary when she finally gets her dream job at the end of "working girl" : 2 other gifted actresses. I think Barbara Noel was a very courageous lady and a real inspiration. I hope she's still doing well.
Brilliant movie. All the more because all of it is true. Sickening though how men and even women can't be regarded as serial abusers because of their standing in society etc. Things seem to be changing though thanks to other very strong suvivors. 🎉
Jules Masserman settled 4 malpractice lawsuits out of court in the late 80's. This film is based off of Barbara Noel's book "You Must be Dreaming". Dr Masserman also wrote a book "Sexual Allegations and Social Turmoil: What Can Be Done." The Massermans said that medical and police investigations had proved the allegations by Ms. Noel to be false. Jules Masserman died in 1994 without ever being criminally charged.
As a student doing Bachalor in Phsycology , this movie was so well done and should be showed to students as it explains the inappropiate unethical procedures that are carried out by the health care system and including community services. Here I live in Australia and have heard so many those who clients who are supposed to trust have been abused andthe drug dillema with therapist and client is the same except they use LSD. Our Australian Goverment has a top secret somewhere. it's totally against etithics and criminal. Brilliant movie which leaves you , Who can you Trust.
What do you mean they have a top secret in Australia? Are you referring to "The Family" cult headed by Anne Hamilton Byrne? Julian Assange's family were involved in it. I always believed it was a CIA operation. The CIA had a lsd operation in a Canadian hospital involving drugging, helpless psychiatric patients in mind control. The family in Australia never really got any real punishment for the abuse of patients and minor children for the drug abuse or other abuses that occurred.

Months later his picture was in a front page of a Chicago paper for being accused of sexual assault of a patient. I always wonder.

She had no physical proof. Since she was a psychiatric patient they could attack her mental state. The psychiatrist was a giant in the medical field. He was the authority other doctors used. Watched this for the 2nd time. Excellent movie based on the true story of a strong heroic woman . Her story is an inspiration to all women . Judith Light was fabulous in this role. She is a great actress.
A person can be a "giant in their field" and still be mentally unstable. There are many accomplished sociopaths and narcissists in the world.

Great advice! 🇺🇲

There are good psychotherapists out there. Like me! Trust your instinct always.
There are good ones, but LOTS of bad ones. I will never see a mental health professional again. Many of them have worse problems than their patients.

It's a major gamble seeking mental health assistance. A coin flip between possibly helpful or possibly damaging. "Oops all my grades were C+. I think I might know what I'm doing. It might take years to work out. Pay my sliding scale fee. NEXT!"
I' m so sorry about what happened to you. I'm glad you are better now. Thank you for sharing. It may help someone else.
I just don't understand how people can do this! Good for you for getting that information. That is your closure. I'm glad you are healing.
I'm sorry that happened to you Hugs
So sorry you went through such horrible and horrific things.People can be so messed up, glad you wee able to get background info on them m HUGS go out to you,I was a victim also if sexual abuse by a family member, my mother refused to hear the truth. We were nit close.

PTSD is not just relegated to war/combat or acts of physical violence/rape prolonged exposure as a child to a parent or parents who are verbally abusive or emotionally abusive as well as being indifferent to our needs can result in Complex PTSD. What a horrendous act this psychiatrist did to a patient who trusted him!

Lovely movie!! Love Judith Light's acting in any movie. It's so unfair that the doc didn't get punished with imprisonment for what he did to all those women. But I'm glad Barbara got her life back!!
There was no need to punish a doctor as she was unconscious and didn't get pregnant.
@@fahadmustafa8694Wrong WOW!!
@@lorileew2337 There are people just like the doctor who go on SM to get off on defending like-minded predators.

You are so right!
Today a psychiatrist would loose his license simply from keeping such.poor medical notes.
HA HA ! Absolutely! "Ain't " it glorious!
❤🎉😅
Good for you dear
Eeeeeew !!
I believe you.
Bless your heart I'm glad you didn't freeze to the point of not being able to run away and escape..

Betrayal of trust in any situation is horrible but betrayal of someone you are close to is even worse..

I can't believe I never saw this movie it was excellent. I love Judith Light she is so good.

😇💜 Do NOT quote the Bible especially when I to was RAPED IN A hospital. I was given medicine in a treatment center. I was in my hospital room a sleep in broad daylight, and I woke up for a few seconds and saw this guy ( a patient ) and I SAID NO TO HIM !!! I was so groggy from the medication I was given ( in pill form ) and I fell back asleep.😔💜 I ended up getting herpes from this guy. I'm married have been for 30 years. You quoted God is faithful, and basically saying so we are not tempted, who in the HELL do YOU think YOU ARE by saying something like this ??? I later found out that this guy had NO business being on this side of the hospital ( I found out that he was a patient that belonged on the psych ward !!! ) SO TAKE YOUR HOLIER-THAN-THOU ATTITUDE, and SAYING that this wouldn't happen to someone if they only knew the bible, and saying that if someone has been RAPED they deserved what happened to them ( because we tempted someone !!! 😠😞😪😔
YOU ARE FULL OF SH 💩 T !!!
I was sexually assaulted by a doctor. Took five years to see any justice.

WOW. Trauma from such an early age that was blocked. As for the Psychiatist what a low life. Should have been barred for life but again they protect their own, What a brave lady who today I am sure lives a happy carefree life after so much early trauma, Thank you FilmRise movies for posting this.Well worth watching
