I grew up with Marla. She was a cheerleader, Student Council President and Honor Roll student. Plus she was my friend. She and I graduated from Odessa, Missouri High School in 1979. Things were so different back then. You could leave your doors unlocked at night. We were pretty naive about the world in general. Moving to the big city after spending most of your life in a small farming community was a HUGE culture shock for naive country girls from the Show Me State like us. Marla is a kind and compassionate individual who is always there to always help someone in need. We are having our 45th high school reunion this fall. Hopefully she will be there!

Your comment is similar to mine, I also came from a small town on the Big Island of Hawaii. I graduated 🎓 in 1974 4 years before you. Our 50th class reunion is coming this November. I also left my hometown in 74 and went to New Jersey talk about culture shock 🤯. Then I visited NYC 🗽 seeing the Empire State Building 🏢 the Twin Towers and taking a ferry ⛴ to see the Statue of 🗽 it was something I'll never forget. Now I live in Pennsylvania not far from Pittsburgh. So yes back then was so simple and care free, we had it so good. Now look how time changed, it's pretty scary. Will never have what we had back then, so make the most at your reunion. Unfortunately for me I'm not able to go back for mine, due to health reasons. But my close friends will do a zoom call on the day of the reunion. Hope you also get to see Marla and reconnect God Bless.

The past was only superficially "better", as we were even more blind as to the forces that drive popular culture and tradition. The "good old days" (and long before) consisted of a series of inter-related traps being laid to to pervert and ensnare us all - especially our young.

I had one of these in the early 90’s. He lived in the building next to mine and terrorized me. He never physically harmed me, but was very menacing. I was lucky enough to have a female detective that believed me and saw him as a threat. I filed a restraining order but it was difficult when he lived next door. He would use a ladder to tape notes to my bedroom window, pleasure himself in the window that faced my window, I lived alone and was terrified 😞. Thankfully stalking laws existed by that time. He finally moved away and I never saw him again.

Never, never, NEVER let a stalker, creeper or other abuser know you are leaving. NEVER! If it's a husband, boyfriend or someone you live with, just leave without warning even if it means leaving all your stuff behind. Landlord, coworker, random wierdo in the neighborhood - move without telling them. I thought everyone knew that by now.

To drive and he was driving to fast and hitting every bump in the road and he did drive his car like that so ask him to slow down 3 times and I ask the. 4th time and he said Shut up and he slap me in the face after that I start moving my stuff out the house little by little and I told him he need to see about getting his car fix because my hours on my 1st job was getting ready to change from 2nd. Shift to 1st and so he put the. Car in the shop and his stove broke down. So I went to my Storage unit got my microwave out and. That where warm up and cook our food on so I finally got everything out and stay with my mom and dad for 2 weeks but that first night he was blowing up my phone so I answer it he said when you coming home and I told him I am at home

I was once in a abusive relationship. I left without saying anything with our 2 week old son. Idk how he knew but he came after me with a knife and forced me back to the apartment and beat me. I was stuck in being in that relationship. Long, long story of how I got out of that relationship. I put him in prison. As of today he is out. I'm in a different state. Happily married with my perfect husband. I am very grateful to have him in my life... With 3 kids and another on the way ...
In a way I understand what some women go thru in a abusive relationship... People think it's so easy to get out of.... But it's not that easy. Especially when ur away from family that could help u...

Pretend they are invisible and don't exist. Sometimes it may antagonize them more, but it's better than giving them any attention for their behavior.
I've watched many stalker/abuse type shows, and I can't believe the number of times a victim gives in to the abuser and/or stalker. Like when the stalker calls someone and the phone rings 50 times then a victim picks up the phone. The stalker's behavior is reinforced at this point and will let the phone ring 60, 70, 80 times or more. They believe their victim will eventually give in and answer the phone just like they did before. Back then, all you had to do was unplug the phone. Then you don't have to listen to it incessantly ring. Nowadays, ignore all texts and block their number. Ignore all attempts to reach you on social media etc.

The vietnam vets were foisted upon innocent women and allowed to torture their wives and children. No help from anybody. No support for moms,no food for our children and death if we couldn't escape. The Battered Woman by Lenore Walker was published in 1979. The laws were not passed until 1990's and were always opposed by Republicans (religious) and have had to be fought for until 2013. :( If you young ladies know how to face this our work was not in vain.

That man was extremely creepy from the very beginning. Sadly, there was nothing Marla could do to avoid this guy. I would have remained with her friend who offered a safe place on the sofa, I would not have left the friend for another apartment and being a new comer to New York. I would have wanted to stay with someone that I knew. A year ago, this kind of incident happened to me, but not on the face, but the event has the same feeling of someone stealing something personal to one's body. I feel bad for her too and in NY you have to be a B*** to make it there because there is a lot of thuggish type folks in the pockets of the city. A little of everything. What a horrific way to become famous. I remember this case very well now because this was aired nationally and she did make the talk show circuit at that time. I hope that they served the entire 15 years for this crime.

I nearly forgot this case and only recognised it by the name Marla Hanson. This was a HUGE story in NY when this incident occurred and every woman could relate to the fear of Hanson's plight. I was pleasantly surprised that this was even uploaded. It is rare and hard to find. Those three men were seriously evil to do what they did, but I won't give away too much for those sensitive folks regarding plot spoilers. But Google her name and you will find out the rest of this case and possibly what she is doing now.

I thought it was such a travesty of justice for Marla to one day, be fighting for her life, and the next day be fighting for her integrity, in court. Honestly, if I had been on that jury the day she was asked to show the jurors her scars, I would have already made up my mind to vote them guilty, and I probably would have shedded some tears, for her, seeing her scars, knowing the pain she went through. And she could have died from those injuries. No girl is asking to be sliced up, in the face.
But for Steve to say he created her beauty, and he would take it away, just because he put some makeup on her face. Any other good makeup artist could have done that. Makeup just enhances any beauty that is already there. But I googled the real Marla Hanson and she had a fresh face beauty, with or without makeup, so her mom and dad created her beauty, and it's still there. I'm just glad she was able to recover and move on well with her life, and surprisingly she still love New York. I hope New York has embraced her with love. Just a small town girl, going to a big city, trying to make it, and that happened. Smh.

LOVE this movie especially Kirk Baltz! The more I watch it the more I notice especially with the character of Steve. I.e. when Steve first shows Marla the apt, he unlocks the door and opens it at the same time. I see this as his way of trying to catch the girls off guard so he can maybe see them in a state of undress like he did with Dawn. He did the same move when he wanted to check in on Marla. Notice you don’t hear him unlocking the door, he just opens it right away catching the girls off guard.

Cheryl, the actress here reminded me of when I was in 9th grade, and a new girl came in looking drop dead gorgeous somewhat like Cheryl. She had missed a grade, because she had a baby, though we didn't know all that then. But that explained a maturity she had. My friends, and I were still acting like silly schoolgirls. But when she walked confidently in the room, head held high, like a model, she looked like a queen to us. She politely and kindly smiled at us, and befriended us, because I'm sure she saw we admired her. But she had that model face like Cheryl.

When Marla is asked about looking in the mirror, and she says “I don’t see the scars, I just see myself” I remember not understanding that! As a young teen I had an incident that caused me to have a scar on my face from the corner of my eye very close to my ear lobe! 175 stitches inside and out! It could’ve been a lot worse because I also had no nerve damage and it goes with my cheek line! After a while it just became part of me I guess, because I finally understand exactly what she meant by that!
