Yeah I watched to the end. Again you are an inspiration. There are lots of stupid videos on UA-cam but your videos are educational and you and I are gonna build a garage then I'm gonna setup a big screen tv and watch the super bowl
Doing a solo build 24x40 shop. No longer than 10 foot sections of framing so I can handle it myself. Not a carpenter by any stretch of the imagination, learning as I am going. We have been getting brutal heat the last few weeks so I get a few hours in the morning and a couple hours after the sun goes behind the hills, probably averaging 4 hours per day and it looks like I will have approximatly 60 hours just in the framing. Can't wait to get to the sheathing part of it. Not bad for a man with little carpentry skills I guess. Lots of reading and UA-cam videos have helped. The one thing I found is there is more then one way to do much of this. Hoping to have it ready for Roof Trusses that will be showing up in 2 weeks. Just so they can put them up on the top rails with their crane so I don't need to struggle getting them up myself.
@MyDIYAdventures thank you sir. Funny thing is. I do my corners exactly like you do. Window openings I found really slow me down, over an hour for one 8 foot section with a single 36x36 window. I found if I assemble them separate with double kings, Jack's and the header, it makes it pretty easy to place it where I want it. Always try to use one of the kings in a main stud position to kill 2 birds with one stone, then add my cripples after I place it in the framing. I use double kings just to add a bit of extra strength, code does not require it here. One 40 foot wall left. This one Will get 2 windows(already built, just need placed), exterior door, and a single 9x7 garage door. Supposed to cool down the next few days, so I should be able to make a bit of headway, I hope.
Fellow solo builder here. I am not in the trades, I am a building designer. But, I love doing hands on work as well. The sense of accomplishment is par non when you're finished isn't it. Stay safe
Always like watching your builds, can you show and explain how you square the building before you start framing and show how you snap the chalk lines on the floor after you square it?
I just pull measurements from corner to corner to check square. Most of the time they’re within an inch of square, so I just follow the edge of the slab…no need to snap lines then.
Yeah. On the side walls, how do you go about closing the gap between the top of the wall and the roofline? Thanks for posting these builds. After watching your builds I am going to attempt building my 25x30 shop with upstairs storage for my motorcycles.
Yeah! Structurally, would full sheets of OSB installed on the corners have more structural integrity than half sheets? - 23:30 - Flip-flop the half sheet OSB with the full sheet?
Morning! If I'm doing 2x4 walls on 4x8x16 CMU blocks, should I be running a 2x6 frame on the garage, and then 2x6 inside framing as well? Hope that makes sense! Watching a ton of your videos to get a handle on my own garage build. Thanks!
Enjoyed the video. What size garage header are you using along with the 92 5/8" studs and still maintain 7' 1&1/2" rough opening height for the garage door?
When installing the sill plates do you inset them 1/2” from the edge of the slab so the sheathing ends up flush with the slab? Or does sill plate sit flush with slab and sheathing hangs over 1/2”? Not sure how I should do it and wanna get it right
Do you have your individual home builders license or license through an LLC. I passed my Home builders license in, but now I need to apply for it and I want see if you could suggest a route I should take. I’m not sure of the process in your state, but I’m from Alabama . But all in all, Your vids are EXACTLY how I see myself working in this career, and I would love to hear your opinion on wat routes I can take In this field of work.
Im building a 18w x24L garage and am trying to decide on door size ...some of my research has some people saying a 16w door on a 18w garage can be week/flimsy and recomend going with a single door whats your opinion on this ? Can it be tuff to get a 16w door to work well with a 18w garage? (10 foot walls) if that matters
With only 2’ of framing on either side of the door, it doesn’t have a lot of shear strength…but we build them that way all the time. Just make sure your sheathing spans the side wall and onto the header in one piece, don’t piece it in.
In my area they're really picky about shear walls on the garage door wall. It looks like there is almost no shear wall on this one. Is that just allowed in your area or was there special design work done?
Admire your efforts and teaching, if you were to slow down the proces (show the measurement of each board, type of board and how a plywood is set) you would the best instructor; and fortunately, there would be less people homeless trying to build their own homes. Thanks and God Bless.
I figure the height as determined by roof pitch, in this case 54” (9’ x 6/12 pitch) then subtract for the ridge and birds mouth (usually 4”). So on this one I put my ridge props at about 49-50 inches.
I built a 2 car 30x30 by myself back in 2001. I did get my son to help me hang the 2 garage doors.. Took me about 3 weeks. I used vinyl siding and 25 year shingle roof. Trimmed out with pvc soffit & facia material. It's not a big deal to do this.

I was just discussing that with my HVAC guy (who also flies solo), about the sense of accomplishment you get after completing a job.
Youve done nice work. Ive built garages both ways. 18ft wide is a nice width. Enjoy your work.

If the lean to roof rafters were notch to the ledger would hanger brackets be needed?

I would say yes, but inspectors around here don’t like to see it done that way…they love their stupid hangers!

@MyDIYAdventures no worries, I think I'm overthrowing this haha
Enjoyed the video. What size garage header are you using along with the 92 5/8" studs and still maintain 7' 1&1/2" rough opening height for the garage door?
2x12 set with a single top plate, the door actually finishes to about 83” with the 2x6 trim.
When installing the sill plates do you inset them 1/2” from the edge of the slab so the sheathing ends up flush with the slab? Or does sill plate sit flush with slab and sheathing hangs over 1/2”? Not sure how I should do it and wanna get it right
Doesn’t really matter, I’ve done it both ways
Cool garage thank you for sharing

I used to have my remodelers license, but I no longer have it. And I currently don’t function as an LLC, I plan on doing that shortly actually.
Making me want to just build my own garage..
Let er rip!
From start to finish, everuthing including cement. What was the cost with labor.im thing anought having one built..?
The contractor I framed this for charges around $50/sq ft for a basic garage.
Yeah!

I stay as close to home as possible LOL
I would bring my hedge trimmers and save myself the trouble and trim that shrub back
Good job, more or less how much you spent in this construction, the cost
I was only hired to frame it
How high are the walls ? Whats the garage door size?
8’ walls, 16x7 door
What was the pitch for the porch roof?
3 1/2 if I recall correctly, I don’t think I could get a 4 to fit.
Yeah!
Is there a way to build this garage with a different truss system to have room for a car lift?
They make scissor trusses, or you could just go with 12’ walls
@@MyDIYAdventures Would you think building 12" walls is doable solo?
I sure wouldn’t do it LOL
Hi! Are these walls 8ft studs?
92 5/8” studs
Yeah

What method do you use to determine your ridge height?
I figure the height as determined by roof pitch, in this case 54” (9’ x 6/12 pitch) then subtract for the ridge and birds mouth (usually 4”). So on this one I put my ridge props at about 49-50 inches.
Is that 9’ pulled from the outside of the sheathing?
It’s inconsequential for the ridge prop, but when I lay out my rafters, I do account for the ridge and the wall sheathing.
