I started this channel with the goal of helping people Plan, Design, Build, and upgrade their garage. I'll take you through the process of building my own garage as well as other garage tours and some product reviews. I've scowered the internet and UA-cam for hours on end looking for one single source of information to help me plan, design, and build my dream garage. I was never able to find a single source for that information, so I started this channel to be that one location. I hope to help you with your garage build and after following along with my build process, help give you the confidence to self general contract your build. If that sounds interesting to you, please consider subscribing!
Many people are intimidated by trying to build their own garage. I hope this channel will help take the fear out of designing and building your garage. Garage builds are an expensive dream with many critical building decision points along the way. I hope to help guide you through the decision points of building the perfect attached or detached garage for you!

This is a high grade professional build. I really like how they keep packing the dirt as they go. Makes for a solid foundation and that.
Compaction is KEY! I wanted to have as little settling as possible.
@@DetachedGarageJust wait until you find out that sand is under your house😂😊
well done on the Time Lapse ;-)
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I hope you keep watching the rest of the build. Let me know if there is anything specific you would like to see.
You notice how they tied in the lower level with that piece of ply? That's shear strenf at it's best and smart builders.
I’m in Wisconsin also and as you were building the footings it reminded me of our shed build! All the same stuff for sure! However we went with split face block for the exterior instead of traditional stick build. Well done and I’m in to see what’s next with your channel and garage build out!!
Heyo! Glad to have another Wisconsinite garage enthusiast here! Sounds like an awesome build. Thanks for supporting the channel and garage community!
Perfekte und saubere Arbeit.👍
Grüße aus Germany von Rudi
Thank you for the kind words all the way from Germany! 🇩🇪
Awesome! Now let’s finish this thing!
Haha I know right?!?!
Very much enjoyed watching this speedy construction. I didn't see expansion joint material installed between the block and the concrete. Perhaps I just couldn't see it.
I am looking forward to consecutive videos showing the rest of the build.
Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the build so far. Lots more to come!
There was expansion joint material installed around the perimeter 👍 below is the link to the more detailed review of the prep and pour.
49 YARDS of CONCRETE! // prep and pour // Garage Build Ep. 4

Nice addition. Seems like a good place for ICF substitution for conctete block, or a poured tie beam capping block wall. Ray
Thanks for the kind words, Ray. We were thinking about ICF for the building, but were more comfortable with this method. I hope you are enjoying the content and let me know what you would want to see next.

@@DetachedGarage I like a concluding time laspe episode showing entire build and hope you continue to do this for each f your projects, I just subscribed for this reason. Maybe a finished as used final walk thru if client will allow would be nice. Ray
Very impressive building in the begining I was lost couldn’t fellow but I’m glad a watched to the end good stuff ❤️🙏👍🤕✝️
Thanks so much for the kind words! I hope you enjoy the other videos as well.
I prefer stem walls over cinder block but they did a good job on it so it should hold fine.
Agreed, the price was outrageous for that though.
@@DetachedGarage I hear you.
great vid guys.
Thanks so much!
We do have a 4 foot freeze line in the winter. Backfill is stone and gravel around the foundation to help water move away.
We did not need to even have a frost wall foundation, but thought it was best because we were attaching to the house.
love this!!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you are enjoying the content. There is a lot more to come!
I started a 900 sq ft garage with a ADU above of the same size on 20OCT2024, as of today 29DEC2024, I have a roof, doors, windows and plumbing. I built the garage out of 8” core ICF with 12’ tall walls, dug into a 14’ hillside. It seems strange to me that you’d opt to go for CMU, as it wasted literally weeks of project time and probably dozens of hours overspent on labor.
@@evanolson8819 congrats on your progress! I’d love to see pictures. Let me know if I can help in any way. ICF would have been fun.
Interesting video. Was there any steel used with the concrete? Plumbing for bathrooms? Where is being built? Thanks, from California 😊
Thanks so much for the kind words. No rebar in the concrete. 6” and 5000psi will be enough for my needs. We do have a plumbing line running back to the septic tank. No bathroom right now, but could be added. We are in Wisconsin.
Bruh.! We don’t even get to see it finished wow.!
That’s because it’s not completely done yet. Just phase 1 getting it under roof
@@DetachedGarage would have been cool to see the look of it still, but okay looking forward to seeing it finished
@@Louis_B_creations no worries. Keep following the build series. One episode every Sunday. 👍
Would love to know the price on that bad boy? Beautiful build
Thank you so much for following and watching. Garage is still under construction. Sooooo the price keeps rising unfortunately 🤣
한국식 바닥 난방인 온돌에 착안한 현대식 바닥온수난방을 채택한게 너무 맘에 드네요
We can't wait to install the boiler.
I also noticed no reinforcing in the concrete. Was it fiber-reinforced?
Yes fiber reinforced. We did have rebar at the bottom of the thickened area for the lift.
Would you be able to share the rough cost of materials and labor for this build?
It all depends on finishes. We are looking between $75-$95 per square foot.
I would put money on after a year "i should of had this built bigger"
😂 it is not even done yet and I'm already saying that 😂
Gotta live with your means though. The garage to house ratio is 50:50 right now.
Yup I lost my 2 car garage when we bought this house, so I build a 24x30x12 detached and I'm kicking myself for not doing atleast a 30x30.
Gonna do a lean to off the side then eventually wall that in concrete and blow open the side down the road.
@@jackofall2305 yeah, I feel like 30x50 is ideal side for a shop with a few different work zones. The lean to will help a ton!
the 4 dig holes to the left , and then just por a big slab ower it ?, I thought you were going to have posts there, its hard to see.
can you explain why what it was for ? is the ground unsteady or what? cous the TOProof seams like "floating" over the slab right ?
or maby I just dont see so good :)
@@stefanformgren4978 Great question! Each of the 4 holes is for a post foundation that goes 4' below grade to be below the frost line. I explain this more in episode 4. I've put the link to that episode below. Let me know if you have any more questions and thanks for watching! ua-cam.com/video/C3zx_JPgKUY/v-deo.htmlsi=8zHHCC2caqii-CLj
@@DetachedGarage thanks for the answer
@@stefanformgren4978 you are very welcome! Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks for following along with the build.
Why the ZIP on roofing vs wood? Cost?
Zip makes a 5/8” OSB with weather barrier. We opted for that vs. standard OSB. It is a fantastic product.
question why no footer drain pipe to keep water from eroding the footer french drains should be code in most areas that are not a desert also why no rebar attaching the footer to the block wall
Hey Jimmy,
Thanks so much for reaching out. If this was a full basement foundation we would need drain tile, but since it is just a frost wall, we don’t need it.
There actually is rebar connecting the footings to the block wall, it was drilled afterwards and mortared in place.
Great questions! I hope you are enjoying the build. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Trying to budget for a garage, how much does something like this cost to build?
It really depends on your foundation and if you are attaching to the house. If we weren’t doing that and just doing slab on grade we could have saved 30-50k. We are also replacing windows and residing the entire house to match. So right now I’m estimating between 150-200k roughly $85-$100 per square foot.
how thick is that footing?
@@jasondoza1991 minimum 8” it is thicker in other areas
Gotta truss the process.
😂😂 very punny
I don't understand why the perimeter wall is so deep
Do you mean tall? I wanted it a foot above the concrete slab. I’ll be using a floor coating and having it go up the walls.
Where are you located
We are in Wisconsin
That’s not a garage it’s a complex 😂
The garage to house ratio is almost perfect! If only the garage was a little bit bigger 😂
no rebar in the concrete
Not needed 👍thanks for watching
There is no structure on the floor, no concret slab with welded mesh ? I think you will have cracks
There is fiber in the concrete. We did put rebar underneath the lift area.
Rough cost so far?
Approx $70k
I’d be concerned with quality considering how fast this was built
😂😂
Really should be concerned theres no vertical rebar let any horizontal 1s.
This was pathetic
@@uglyjordanuglyjordan1744 thank you so much 🙏
@@uglyjordanuglyjordan1744 there is vertical rebar.
Что то арматуры две нитки всего!!😂😅
I’m not sure what you mean?
Ha! That's not a garage. That's a flipping hanger.
Haha! 🤣 You can always build it bigger!
Only 2 days of rain!? 😂
We got very lucky!
Nice video. The music is nasty and repetive. Something calm and not so repetive next time!
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll see what I can find on the music for the next one 👍
wow 8 million dollar garage with full bath and pure gold faucets. Them dividend checks just keep coming dont they?
😂😂 Full bath? Gold faucets? Divided checks? Where do I sign up for that?!?!
Я начал смеятся когда на основание под Космодром, начали монтировать каркасник.
Thanks for watching!
Where's the dag?
Don't you like dags?
Man, I can't even imagine how much this cost with the way the prices have been since 2021....
@@acedogg692005 Far less than 2021 actually. Lumber rocketed up and has since come back down.
That being said, it is WAY more expensive than 2019 😂👍
This music is horrible :-) Love timelaps though. Would have been nice with more perspectives.
Thanks for the love! I’ve got a few time lapses in other videos with more rock music. 👍
I agree I switched my off it’s lousy 👍
garage ? ?
Garage indeed!
change the music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
😂😂😂 Sorry only wanted to pay for one license
What a huge waste of money. Could have built this using post frame construction, gotten a better building much faster at way less cost. This is what happens in this video when you only understand one type of construction method.
Christopher, Thank you for this comment 🙏 by leaving it you have truly opened my eyes to another form of construction I never even considered. I wonder if you can help me with any of my other life decisions to give me perspectives I might not have considered?
I’m confused…this garage isn’t even detached.
😂😂😂 See the design video where I explain why. Have a great weekend.
A garage doesn’t have to be, what are you confused about
It's detached from reality.
@@Rubbernecker 😂😂😂 I can assure you, it is real!
