The Indian Railways, one of the largest railway networks globally, operates over 126,000 kilometers of track, serving more than 23 million passengers daily through approximately 13,169 passenger trains and 8,479 freight trains. Annually, it transports more than 1.2 billion tons of freight, making it a vital component of the nation’s economy Historical Context and Growth Established in 1853, the Indian Railways has significantly evolved. By 1880, the network expanded to about 15,000 kilometers, primarily to address economic needs such as famine relief. By 1947, post-independence, the rail network grew to nearly 54,000 kilometers, compared to China's 27,000 kilometers, of which only 8,000 kilometers were operational due to civil strife. Since then, China has rapidly expanded its railway system to over 110,000 kilometers, while India has only added around 11,000 kilometers in the same period, highlighting a crucial lag in infrastructure development. Recent Developments Infrastructure Enhancements Between 2014 and 2024, the Indian government has undertaken significant infrastructure projects: Track Renewal and Doubling : 25,000 kilometers of tracks were renewed, and 14,000 kilometers were doubled to enhance capacity and reduce congestion. Safety Upgrades Implementation of advanced signaling systems, including the Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) and Centralized Traffic Control (CTC), at 1,600 stations has improved operational efficiency and safety. Safety Improvements Safety has been a critical focus. From 1995 to 2005, the railways faced 20 collisions and 350 derailments annually. However, under the current government: - Total accidents decreased from 1,711 under previous administrations to 638. - Accidents per million train kilometers reduced from 0.29 to 0.037. - The number of derailments fell from 867 to 426, and fatalities dropped from 2,453 to 781. Passenger Amenities Passenger experience has also been prioritized: - Introduction of modern trains like the Vande Bharat Express and upgrades to existing coaches have enhanced safety and comfort. Over 5,000 coaches have been retrofitted with modern amenities, such as bio-toilets, LED lighting, and charging points. - A robust digital infrastructure has been established through the IRCTC mobile app, allowing for paperless ticketing and QR code-based systems, streamlining the ticketing process and reducing fraud. Connectivity and Economic Growth Network Expansion The Indian Railways has focused on expanding connectivity, especially in rural and remote areas. Recent initiatives include: - Adding 10,000 kilometers of new lines to previously underserved regions, improving economic opportunities. - Projects like the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link aim to connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India, enhancing mobility and economic prospects. Strategic Rail Lines The government has also developed rail infrastructure in strategic border areas: - Approximately 3,500 kilometers of new lines have been introduced in these regions to support defense logistics and regional development. - Dedicated Freight Corridors, such as the Western and Eastern DFCs, have been implemented to bolster the movement of goods, improving logistical efficiency in strategic locations. The Indian Railways has seen transformative improvements over the past decade, focusing on infrastructure, safety, and passenger services. With ambitious plans for complete electrification by 2030, these advancements not only enhance operational efficiency but also position the Indian Railways as a key player in the country’s economic development. The significant reduction in accidents and improvements in passenger amenities underscore the commitment to creating a safer and more reliable transportation system. As these developments continue, the vision of a modern and green railway network becomes increasingly attainable.
Big fan of Sudhanshu Mani ji. The guests are always great on your podcasts, a general observation that the interviewer should be better prepared with better questions.
To increase freight share in Indian Railway, govt need to start RoRo service across India with the collaboration between railway and transporters. It will reduce truck traffic from road and save fuel as well.

Take any drm in the last 5 yrs of retirement allocate them to improve and bring atleast 100 sections or 5 section of 400kms allocated to each to upgrade to min achieving 100kms audited for all rakes to cross over per hr every 400kms in 4hrs inclusive of stops... first redesign the bathroom in trains to help any number to use with less smell and water drainning properly . this should be done first rather than talking about bullet trains . this is utter shame to see that rest rooms in LHB super fast trains which do not drain and smell so bad
Yes that is major issue. However I travelled in Vande Bharat which was fitted with a very spacious closet that too with bio-vacuum toilet instead of biotoilet. It was way better. Toilet design was miles ahead of what we experience in LHB coaches.

Diesel locomotive have 30 to 35% efficiency whereas electric powered are 85 to 90% efficiency in converting into mechanical energy, as 35 to 40% energy coming is renewable and is said to increase more, electrification of railways is need of the hour. Climate change effects will more severe if we not reduce green house gas emmissions.
Rightly said more work on implementation of KAWACH sooner. Common man's expectations pocket friendly fare. Why not speed up solar power production for green fuel. Also can contribute remarkable revenue generation for railways.
On the subject of track speed. it appears even newer tracks in India are laid on the original alignment, thus not supporting faster transit. In that case, electrifying these tracks may result in increasing the cost of a do-over with alignment for faster speeds.
Can the safety and security of the railways be like airports or like metro where u cannot enter the station without going through the security and also you have to show your tickets to enter inside
Here are some enhanced facts about India's Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) with specific details Construction Timeline : The construction of DFCs began during the Eleventh Five Year Plan (2007-2012) after the establishment of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) in 2006. The project was initiated to separate freight from passenger traffic and improve operational efficiency. Routes Key Corridors : The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) spans approximately 1,873 kilometers from Ludhiana in Punjab to Dankuni in West Bengal. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) stretches around 1,506 kilometers from Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai to Dadri in Uttar Pradesh. Benefits Economic Impact : DFCs are expected to reduce logistics costs from 13-15% of GDP to about 8%, enhancing the competitiveness of Indian industries. They facilitate the movement of goods over long distances, benefiting sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture. New DFCs Future Expansion: Plans include three new corridors: the North-South corridor (Itarsi to Tenali), East-West corridor (Andal to Palgarh), and East Coast corridor. These will collectively cover significant distances across multiple states, further enhancing freight connectivity. Technology Advanced Systems : DFCs utilize high-capacity, high-speed electric trains with double-stacking capabilities for container transport, significantly improving transit times and energy efficiency. Operational Status Current Operations : As of April 2024, the EDFC is fully operational while the WDFC is approximately 93.2% complete. Together, they handle around 325 trains daily, with an optimum capacity of 480 trains. Environmental Impact Sustainability Goals : The DFCs aim to reduce carbon emissions by shifting freight transport from road to rail, which is more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Financial Aspects Investment : The combined project value for the new corridors is estimated at ₹2 trillion, with significant investments already made in infrastructure development. The DFC initiative represents a transformative step for India's logistics sector, enhancing efficiency and supporting economic growth through improved freight transport capabilities.

Railways make 50,000 crore revenue from passenger traffic. Here is a crazy idea. Pay Rs. 10,000 for unlimited rail travel. Family of 4 pays Rs. 40,000. Do you think 7 Crore persons (5% the population) will pay Rs. 10,000 for unlimited rail travel. This will give 70,000 crore revenue to railways. The idea can be refined. there will be more revenue from balance 95% population. Like Sir Maniji says do you want the common man travel in train thru 40 degrees temp in train which is like oven with crowd like cattle. that is not vikasit Bharat. All trains should be air conditioned. raising revenue could be from advertisements, rent from commercial areas within stations etc.
If rrts takes 1hr to travel 160kmph abt time india established 240kmph rrts like propulsion ND atempt made nd commitment made to commission such trainsets that will do 240kmph as short run ie 250kms run in 1-1 30 min w 5 stops every 40-50kms and run 360 deg of any major Indian city along with 1hr trains ie 120kms with 10-20kms stops as an adjunct for slower bus lines thr by both freight ND ro ro can also B done in the night or other such specific time slot appropriate and another 2 lines ballast less inserted in an attempt to c that fast trains can B run esp in 200kms inserted to upgrade to hsr like wr 180knph tracks can't B achieved,.... Fast train money achieved shd B employed in a daily basis for track development every 10 vande bharat earnings and B diverted along with railways or rbi interest free loans to infrastructure committnent for transforming railways urgently... Even now simple ❤things like running multiple vb to achieve 3hr advantages on 700km travel is achievable so kindly increase the productivity of vb to 16coach ND 12-15nos vande per month so that in a year approx 5percent trains can B speeded up.... Fast input faster moolah for the railways.. Also hubs for sleeper ND vb dual ticket made available ie options shd B provided for any empty seats to longer traveling express ND other 1,2,3 ac passengers to travel vb for 8hrs.... Thr by decreasing 3hrs for any passenger at single go w complinentary travel in both directions ❤Absolutely all vb must B run 20hrs a day w 4hrs maintenance schedule adhered towards as sop for max utilization of rake strength

The Indian Railways has focused on expanding connectivity, especially in rural and remote areas. Recent initiatives include:
- Adding 10,000 kilometers of new lines to previously underserved regions, improving economic opportunities.
- Projects like the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link aim to connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India, enhancing mobility and economic prospects.
Strategic Rail Lines
The government has also developed rail infrastructure in strategic border areas:
- Approximately 3,500 kilometers of new lines have been introduced in these regions to support defense logistics and regional development.
😊
To increase freight share in Indian Railway, govt need to start RoRo service across India with the collaboration between railway and transporters. It will reduce truck traffic from road and save fuel as well.
Mr. Mani forgot about Superfast Express to all south states started under Railway minister Madhu Dandvate.
Electrification of track is a major change
Yes ...he missed this point
I absolutely loved this episode! Your deep dive into train history and technology was both informative and engaging. Your enthusiasm and knowledge make this podcast a must-listen for any train enthusiast. Keep up the amazing work!

❤❤️🙏Around Delhi, mumbai nd Salem, bhopal, Indore, Jaipur, Ahmedabad 700-800km vb train must B run to decrease time constraints ie reduce 3hrs for passengers esp in the morning ie 4am,5,6,7,8 am slots it shd B inserted say
Ndls-ratlam, ratlam panvel, Ndls-bpl, bpl-nasik, bpl-warangal Nagpur-jhansi, Nagpur-vijaywada Tirupati-thrissur, to get rid if overcrowding till all passengers get ready to go tickets ie 20percent train travels empty at start of journey... Slower trains removed ie under avg speeds of 80kmph those who don't travel 60kmph ie can't cover 100 in 1.30min must B removed instead of congesting or jamming tracks all trains must B brought to min 120kmph runs ie stops restricted to 5 for local 1hr 2hr trains by either 10/20kms per stop ie 5 mins allocated to stops n 55 min run..... Take any drm in the last 5 yrs of retirement allocate them to improve and bring atleast 100 sections or 5 section of 400kms allocated to each to upgrade to min achieving 100kms audited for all rakes to cross over per hr every 400kms in 4hrs inclusive of stops... This one adherence to this simple achievement will restart India in 1-2yrs
Bahut informative interview tha, sudhanshu ji ka bahut bahut dhanyabad 🙏
I had 2 questions -
1 - we heard about hydrogen train will be launched in January 2024, what about it?
2 - we heard 3 years ago about R260 rail roll out, is there any development happened on ground level?
🙏🙏
Knowledgeable... Thank you so much.... 🇮🇳
🙏
Sudhanshu ji one of the best officer of railways.
Lot's of respect for you sir 🙏🙏
🙏
Bahut he acha podcast...bahut kuch janne or sikhne ko mila..
🙏
first redesign the bathroom in trains to help any number to use with less smell and water drainning properly . this should be done first rather than talking about bullet trains . this is utter shame to see that rest rooms in LHB super fast trains which do not drain and smell so bad
Yes that is major issue.
However I travelled in Vande Bharat which was fitted with a very spacious closet that too with bio-vacuum toilet instead of biotoilet.
It was way better. Toilet design was miles ahead of what we experience in LHB coaches.

Climate change effects will more severe if we not reduce green house gas emmissions.

IR should aim for that!!

DFCs are important.
Here are some enhanced facts about India's Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) with specific details
Construction
Timeline : The construction of DFCs began during the Eleventh Five Year Plan (2007-2012) after the establishment of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) in 2006. The project was initiated to separate freight from passenger traffic and improve operational efficiency.
Routes
Key Corridors : The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) spans approximately 1,873 kilometers from Ludhiana in Punjab to Dankuni in West Bengal. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) stretches around 1,506 kilometers from Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai to Dadri in Uttar Pradesh.
Benefits
Economic Impact : DFCs are expected to reduce logistics costs from 13-15% of GDP to about 8%, enhancing the competitiveness of Indian industries. They facilitate the movement of goods over long distances, benefiting sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture.
New DFCs
Future Expansion: Plans include three new corridors: the North-South corridor (Itarsi to Tenali), East-West corridor (Andal to Palgarh), and East Coast corridor. These will collectively cover significant distances across multiple states, further enhancing freight connectivity.
Technology
Advanced Systems : DFCs utilize high-capacity, high-speed electric trains with double-stacking capabilities for container transport, significantly improving transit times and energy efficiency.
Operational Status
Current Operations : As of April 2024, the EDFC is fully operational while the WDFC is approximately 93.2% complete. Together, they handle around 325 trains daily, with an optimum capacity of 480 trains.
Environmental Impact
Sustainability Goals : The DFCs aim to reduce carbon emissions by shifting freight transport from road to rail, which is more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
Financial Aspects
Investment : The combined project value for the new corridors is estimated at ₹2 trillion, with significant investments already made in infrastructure development.
The DFC initiative represents a transformative step for India's logistics sector, enhancing efficiency and supporting economic growth through improved freight transport capabilities.
Gauge conversion and electric traction have been missed in this discussion.
Mai yeh puchna chahata hu ki railways trains ka coach position pehle sei update kyu nhi karta railway app mei jaise New Delhi Jalandhar SF hai toh uss mei 2 ac ke coaches hote hai ab jaise Maine train gzb sei pakadni hai aur 2 min ka stop hai toh it is very difficult for people to board ac coach as ya toh vo last mei hota hai yaa toh engine ke peeche toh railway jab train originated station sei depart karte hai toh railway ko coach position app mei update nhi karna chahiye jisse ki logo ko koi problem naa ho railway aesa kyu nhi karta

Let's get this straight get railways to give broad Guage tracks to pvt metro people including rrts etc to deliver trains running 240kmph trainsets that can nd shd run them on mainline... Let the developers develop n innovate to deliver the products.... If u can't let others utilize thr innovation ND expertise to do what is need of the hour....

Thanks, this when VB is not even running at full potential due to track limitation. As for ticketless travel, yes, it must be tackled strongly; no excuses.
Sudhanshu Sir, why can't Indian Trains have onboard Take away Restaurants and also Pantry in the coaches. Some Trains like Rajdhani and Sampark Kranti could also have sitting arrangements in the On-board Restaurants.
...Just a Suggestion 🙏🙏
Yes, I too favour that 🙏
@@ManiSudhanshu Sir , I think you can take this proposal forward to the Authorities. We as common citizens, neither have access nor resources to take it to the Decision making Body of Railways.

If there is no issue regarding money then why Konkan railway is still running on single track after 25 years & after massive demand from people in that region....
Better ask the ministry 😀🙏
Do the Railway officers have to stay in such opulence. Railway bungalows are british style bungalows... Is it required in present age.
👍

Thr by decreasing 3hrs for any passenger at single go w complinentary travel in both directions
