Issue with government communication also is that they let Vande Bharat get all the prominence. But the biggest achievement of this government is of big transformation in many areas : All ICF coach production halted and now 100% LHB coaches; same with electrification, moving to 100%; DFC was got all the momentum under them.

I just travelled by Vande Bharat Express from Mumbai to Vadodara. Journey was comfortable . About tea , yes the caterers gives tea powder mix, but in doing so , we are also creating plastic garbage . So earlier Chai was tastier less garbage . One thing I have noticed , the caterers collect plastic , aluminium packs etc and instead of safely discarding , they throw the garbage near the Forest in Mumbai - Pune for example . So you will see such garbage littered along the track in the ghat section, when trains slows down. Bring this to the notice of the Govt . So far , no action from the govt.
Construction work on 2 DFC started only in 2014 . Before that it was in planning phase . So now if it’s almost completed it’s a great achievement in itself. That’s despite the political issues at the state level. IMO it’s a positive
Mani Ji has been unhappy ever since he was retired or probably wasn't given due credit. 3000 KM of DFC is a record in Independent India. Electrification is a milestone. Trains reaching north-east will serve everyone. Kashmir will connect by end of 2024 & Freight movement will increase, speed will increase. Imgine containers going directly to Port. Jobs will be created as a result as well. This negativity will disappear after some time, just wait & see how fast people will change again.
88% of land acquisition was done by 2014 March. Only land parcels which were under litigation weren't acquired by the time Modi was worn in. FYI, the first construction contract for DFC was issued in 2013.

Vande Bharat has been a SUPER FLOP. HUGE waste of money. Instead that money should have been used to upgrade current Trains and Stations. It would have generated profit and then we should have brought in Vande Bharat only in sectors where required.

1947 से 2018 तक हज यात्रा में सब्सिडी सरकार देती थी। हज कमेटी के खर्च के अनुसार देखें तो हर राज्य के हिसाब से अलग-अलग खर्च आता है। वैसे औसत के हिसाब से हज यात्रा के लिए 3 से 3.5 लाख रुपए देने पड़ते है। तब कोई परेशानी नही हो रही थी। 10 लाख एकड़ की जमीन वक्फ के पास है जिसमे कोई रोजगार के काम नही हो सकते है और न ही किसी और धर्म के लोग जनरल को छोड़ भी दे SC, ST, OBC को उस संपत्ति से होने वाली आय से सब्सिडी भी नही मिलेगी । जबकि देश सेक्युलर है । और न ही तब ये असंविधानिक लगा । और न ही इसमें पिछड़े दलित के साथ अन्याय नजर आया। पर 80 करोड़ लोगो को अनाज जो की सरकार ने राष्ट्रीय खाद्य सुरक्षा अधिनियम (एनएफ़एसए) के तहत गरीबों को प्रति व्यक्ति प्रति महीना 5 किलो खाद्यान्न मुहैया कराया है. इस योजना के तहत, गरीबों को चावल तीन रुपये प्रति किलो, गेहूं दो रुपये प्रति किलो, और मोटा अनाज एक रुपये प्रति किलो की दर से दिया जाता है. बहुत दिक्कत हो रही है।

It's a delight listening to the honest opinion of Sudhanshu sir. The creator knows the challenges very well. Railway seriously needs implementations and completion of projects timely to achieve targets, rather than announcements. Leadership should review and think about the failures for better solutions where it's lacking. It must be focused on convenience, affordability, and available for average income people as well as the locals too. We need an increase in numbers of more coaches, more general bogies, sitting chair coaches and sleeping coaches in the preexisting trains as well as new local trains with speeding and higher traffic frequencies. Also need more securities, safety standards with facilities and quality of transportation. I hope the near future Railway will improvise more services and bring changes in the life of the common people . Expecting for a positive change. Thanks for the podcast.
I definitely agree with sudhanshu mani sir that until we can transport every citizen of this country with dignity and hygiene with a confirmed reservation, we've failed as a country. Shame on us for 50-60 years after British left, we almost kept the same track length and did almost nothing to modernize railways. It not a surprise that now we have no capacity at all to serve the passanger load. And capacity expansion in a very short period of time is extremely difficult of not impossible

Ground reality is different.. Chinese High Speed Railways are failing throughout and China is successfully hiding the accidents.. Railways is only meant for freight carriage.. Passenger trains aren't that effective
India never had so much money as to invest in the railways alone. There were and are other sectors which need investment: Defence Health Education Science and technology Dams Powergrids And, a constant increase in population has been eating away at the gains.
Even China is unable to ensure confirmed tickets for all of its citizens (China's economy is nearly five times that of India), then India's dreams will remain distant in coming decades. The population of India is too large, and because decades of neglect, the infrastructure cannot keep up with the demands. Other modes of transportation (road and air travel) should be improved and made more accessible in order to reduce the burden on railways.

I agree that vande Bharat train is a good train and a step in right direction, but as Sudhanshu sir said, it's not a world class product. Infact government organisations cannot compete in terms of R&D and product quality with private global companies like alstom, GE, Siemens. The reason developed countries have such advanced trainsets is because private entities are involved. ICF/RCF and other railways manufacturing entities should be privatised.

No big failure 1) earlier even express trains between our locations were used to get late by 2-3 hours . Now all express runs on time. ( Definitely between our location ) Ahmedabad to jodhpur. 2) earlier when I was traveling between 2 major cities, it used to take 4 to 5 hours. Now with vande Bharat it's only 2 hours. ( Ahmedabad to Surat ) 3) The doubling of the track is amazing. 4) pushing LHB coaches is amazing. Smooth rides. 5) all Sudhanshu MANI wants attention.yes he is the big factor for our vande Bharat. But still somewhat I think he is an attention seeker. 6) Railway work is amazing in modi government a) electrification b) modern railway station 7) DFC will give it fruits.just wait. ( Also it is to be noted that , our road infrastructure is also becoming amazing. So good competition) 8) now the main problem is that , overcrowded trains. The main problem is our population. And more and more people are using trains. Still these trains get over crowded only during peak season. And in Gujarat and Rajasthan even in peak season we don't feel this problem. The main thing is that. People can't travel ticketless in buses. And you can travel trains ticketless. So many chidni people are using trains. And thus the crowd.

Very candid discussion. In my view no other person has so much clear understanding of Indian Railway ecosystem. His vast knowledge, vision regarding Indian Railway still remain unutilized. Modiji should've utilized his knowledge and. expertize. As against the present reel minister of railway he could've the real railway minister. The present railway minister under whose stewardship safety,service, punctuality and development have been the great causulties should be remove removed and this great man should be given the charge ofbthe railway portfolio to bring ina quantum change in the whole railway ecosystem and make it a significant driver of the Indian economy.

The speaker did not talk about Amrit Bharat trains which got some hype when PM launched it. Also, I had talked to my father(he’s a railway employee) about using railway data for AI tools. He was unaware of anything happening in this area. Since ashwini vaishnav is both IT minister & railway minister, hopefully try this. Modiji talked with Bill Gates about AI a lot, but AI in railways is a great opportunity.

Would request Sudhanshu sir to write a letter each to Railway Minister and PMO every month on his recommendations. We can leverage his wisdom and the country would benefit.
Firstly I would like to thank Shri Sudhanshu Mani for raising these issues. I also want to acknowledge his contribution as the driving force behind the vande bharat express. It would have been nice if there was more data available about some of the issues he raised. Firstly he mentioned lot of money has been allocated for Railways in the budget in the last decade under the Modi government but has not resulted in higher railway usage for transport. He did not point out any unwarranted spending that was done which had ended up as a waste. Also were there funds that remained unutilized ? There has been lot of positive news about railway progress in the north eastern areas plus rapid electrification. Mani felt tracks had been electrified while there were still hundreds of diesel engines available for use. Some of the losses from the non use of these fixed assets would be offset by the savings on not having to import crude / Diesel while being environment friendly if the electricity comes from renewable sources. In any case this is going in the right direction. He said not enough non-A/C coaches available due to manufacturing of A/C coaches. What has been the growth or decline of travelling passengers in the last 10 years keeping in mind population growth, more disposable incomes etc. Would there have been no overcrowding if only non-A/C coaches were produced. He talked of use of Artificial Intelligence tools. I suppose he meant use of computer systems to improve processes of maintenance making use of some of the live data generated. He could give some of these ideas to startups that can supply such systems to the railways. A lot can be more efficiently done but talk of bringing private players into the railways is a political hot potato with so much fake news around.
Well, I disagree on strong leadership point. Railway had a minister like Mr. Suresh Prabhu. Hello was strong , strict and was taking measures to improve the Railway. But, Railway people didn't like him and made him go away. The people themselves don't want to work like a private institution. The fault lies with railway bureaucracy.

We need 250 to 270 km/ hr trains with minimum stopages. Connecting Delhi mumbai chennai kolkatta delhi and from this metro cities connecting 2 tier cities to travel 3-4 hr journey with speed of 160 km/hr. A night travel and you are from delhi to mumbai or delhi to kolkatta.
Railways cannot compete with airlines over distances above 1,000 kms. The reason is time taken to complete the travel. Railways should try to focus on developing world class rails, trains, engines, signalling system, etc world class upto distances below 1,000 km. It's in the freight that the railways can deliver real punch, irrespective of distance.
Any flight covering 1000-1200 kms distance takes 5 hours from the time one starts from home. On an average 50 minutes to reach airport + the passenger has to reach 60 minutes before departure + 2 hours (120 minutes)flight duration+ 20 minutes for baggage collection + another 50 minutes to reach the city from the destination airport. A total of 50+60+120+20+50 = 300 minutes which is 5 hours. The railway can compete with airlines on any sector where it can reach within 5 hours. In the case of high speed rail where the average speed is 300kmph, even a distance of 1500kms, railways can compete with airlines. Railways also allow more comfort, more leg room compared to flight, and provide Internet connectivity, allowing travellers to stay connected without paying an extra amount that one has to pay for accessing the Internet on planes. The pressurised cabin makes one tired, and train coaches are more comfortable.
Again, the comparison is for upper class for whom time is money. Lower and middle class would still travel where there is money saving rather than time.
As regards to better Roads, credit must be given to PM A V Vajpayee who created National Highway Authority of India and PM Greemen Sadak Yogna which provided good surface connective for cities and villages.
Railways has all the resources but there is no management in utilising those resources. काम की बात सिर्फ तीन श्रेणी होनी चाहिए। 1. प्रीमियम ट्रेंस जो हाई स्पीड पर चले। नए रूट्स डिजाइन हो ऐसी ट्रेंस के लिए। 2. Cost effective AC ट्रेंस। जैसे गरीब रथ। 3. जनरल कोचेस वाली हाई स्पीड ट्रेंस । जिनका मूवमेंट संपर्क क्रांति जैसी ट्रेनों जैसा हो। सभी पुरानी मशहूर ट्रेनों को रिवाइज करने की जरूरत है। इन सभी ट्रेनों में से AC और स्लीपर कोचेस निकालकर । डबल डेकर कोचेस लगाए जाए।
I disagree with electrification issue he brought up; it's just arguing for the sake of arguing. By that logic you just don't do anything and wait for all your electricity source to turn green, but why would you do make them go green if there is no demand for it. So, no electric vehicles, stop R&D on green hydrogen ... etc.

Check which train it was. On which route it was as well. I can guarantee that if you are not lying, that route has had a long history of late trains, and that train itself has a history of being late. You can literally check this using indiarailinfo.

Issue with government communication also is that they let Vande Bharat get all the prominence. But the biggest achievement of this government is of big transformation in many areas : All ICF coach production halted and now 100% LHB coaches; same with electrification, moving to 100%; DFC was got all the momentum under them.

I just travelled by Vande Bharat Express from Mumbai to Vadodara. Journey was comfortable .
About tea , yes the caterers gives tea powder mix, but in doing so , we are also creating plastic garbage . So earlier Chai was tastier less garbage .
One thing I have noticed , the caterers collect plastic , aluminium packs etc and instead of safely discarding , they throw the garbage near the Forest in Mumbai - Pune for example . So you will see such garbage littered along the track in the ghat section,
when trains slows down. Bring this to the notice of the Govt . So far , no action from the govt.
Construction work on 2 DFC started only in 2014 . Before that it was in planning phase . So now if it’s almost completed it’s a great achievement in itself. That’s despite the political issues at the state level. IMO it’s a positive
Mani Ji has been unhappy ever since he was retired or probably wasn't given due credit. 3000 KM of DFC is a record in Independent India. Electrification is a milestone. Trains reaching north-east will serve everyone. Kashmir will connect by end of 2024 & Freight movement will increase, speed will increase. Imgine containers going directly to Port. Jobs will be created as a result as well. This negativity will disappear after some time, just wait & see how fast people will change again.

88% of land acquisition was done by 2014 March. Only land parcels which were under litigation weren't acquired by the time Modi was worn in. FYI, the first construction contract for DFC was issued in 2013.
DFC work started in 2015-16.
Modi should invite sudhanshu ji for help, guidance and truthful ground reality feedback. he's an asset to the country before and after retirement.

1947 से 2018 तक हज यात्रा में सब्सिडी सरकार देती थी। हज कमेटी के खर्च के अनुसार देखें तो हर राज्य के हिसाब से अलग-अलग खर्च आता है। वैसे औसत के हिसाब से हज यात्रा के लिए 3 से 3.5 लाख रुपए देने पड़ते है।
तब कोई परेशानी नही हो रही थी।
10 लाख एकड़ की जमीन वक्फ के पास है जिसमे कोई रोजगार के काम नही हो सकते है और न ही किसी और धर्म के लोग जनरल को छोड़ भी दे SC, ST, OBC को उस संपत्ति से होने वाली आय से सब्सिडी भी नही मिलेगी । जबकि देश सेक्युलर है ।
और न ही तब ये असंविधानिक लगा । और न ही इसमें पिछड़े दलित के साथ अन्याय नजर आया।
पर 80 करोड़ लोगो को अनाज जो की सरकार ने राष्ट्रीय खाद्य सुरक्षा अधिनियम (एनएफ़एसए) के तहत गरीबों को प्रति व्यक्ति प्रति महीना 5 किलो खाद्यान्न मुहैया कराया है. इस योजना के तहत, गरीबों को चावल तीन रुपये प्रति किलो, गेहूं दो रुपये प्रति किलो, और मोटा अनाज एक रुपये प्रति किलो की दर से दिया जाता है. बहुत दिक्कत हो रही है।

Indian Railways use to spend around 12000 crore on fuel every year, by that a little over two years time will be enough to recover 25000 crore of Diesel Locomotive

. AC seating coaches will accommodate daily commuters and an increased number of AC sleeper coaches will reduce waiting list.
. All coaches should have autometic doors and electronic display system for better safety and convenience.
. This is how trains will become less crowded, safe and aesthetically better being fully AC.

It's a delight listening to the honest opinion of Sudhanshu sir. The creator knows the challenges very well. Railway seriously needs implementations and completion of projects timely to achieve targets, rather than announcements.
Leadership should review and think about the failures for better solutions where it's lacking. It must be focused on convenience, affordability, and available for average income people as well as the locals too.
We need an increase in numbers of more coaches, more general bogies, sitting chair coaches and sleeping coaches in the preexisting trains as well as new local trains with speeding and higher traffic frequencies. Also need more securities, safety standards with facilities and quality of transportation.
I hope the near future Railway will improvise more services and bring changes in the life of the common people . Expecting for a positive change.

I definitely agree with sudhanshu mani sir that until we can transport every citizen of this country with dignity and hygiene with a confirmed reservation, we've failed as a country. Shame on us for 50-60 years after British left, we almost kept the same track length and did almost nothing to modernize railways. It not a surprise that now we have no capacity at all to serve the passanger load. And capacity expansion in a very short period of time is extremely difficult of not impossible

Defence
Health
Education
Science and technology
Dams
Powergrids
And, a constant increase in population has been eating away at the gains.
Even China is unable to ensure confirmed tickets for all of its citizens (China's economy is nearly five times that of India), then India's dreams will remain distant in coming decades. The population of India is too large, and because decades of neglect, the infrastructure cannot keep up with the demands. Other modes of transportation (road and air travel) should be improved and made more accessible in order to reduce the burden on railways.
Really a good meaningful discussion, Sudanshu Mani must be listened by Government, do not mind harsh tone or blunt talk about Government, but an intellectual has the right to express himself, then a peer group of his team from Indian Railways can give insights and validate what he is saying

I agree that vande Bharat train is a good train and a step in right direction, but as Sudhanshu sir said, it's not a world class product. Infact government organisations cannot compete in terms of R&D and product quality with private global companies like alstom, GE, Siemens. The reason developed countries have such advanced trainsets is because private entities are involved. ICF/RCF and other railways manufacturing entities should be privatised.

1) earlier even express trains between our locations were used to get late by 2-3 hours .
Now all express runs on time. ( Definitely between our location )
Ahmedabad to jodhpur.
2) earlier when I was traveling between 2 major cities, it used to take 4 to 5 hours. Now with vande Bharat it's only 2 hours.

Modiji should've utilized his knowledge and. expertize. As against the present reel minister of railway he could've the real railway minister. The speaker did not talk about Amrit Bharat trains which got some hype when PM launched it. Also, I had talked to my father(he’s a railway employee) about using railway data for AI tools. He was unaware of anything happening in this area. Since ashwini vaishnav is both IT minister & railway minister, hopefully try this. Modiji talked with Bill Gates about AI a lot, but AI in railways is a great opportunity.

May be the funds should be spent more on productive part like tracks, coaches, speed and safety rather than station upgradation.
Hats off to Sudhashuji to openly admit no thought was given to common man and that Vande Bharat was only for a targeted segment.

Firstly I would like to thank Shri Sudhanshu Mani for raising these issues. I also want to acknowledge his contribution as the driving force behind the vande bharat express. It would have been nice if there was more data available about some of the issues he raised. Firstly he mentioned lot of money has been allocated for Railways in the budget in the last decade under the Modi government but has not resulted in higher railway usage for transport. He did not point out any unwarranted spending that was done which had ended up as a waste. Also were there funds that remained unutilized ?
There has been lot of positive news about railway progress in the north eastern areas plus rapid electrification. Mani felt tracks had been electrified while there were still hundreds of diesel engines available for use. Some of the losses from the non use of these fixed assets would be offset by the savings on not having to import crude / Diesel while being environment friendly if the electricity comes from renewable sources. In any case this is going in the right direction.
He said not enough non-A/C coaches available due to manufacturing of A/C coaches. What has been the growth or decline of travelling passengers in the last 10 years keeping in mind population growth, more disposable incomes etc. Would there have been no overcrowding if only non-A/C coaches were produced.
He talked of use of Artificial Intelligence tools. I suppose he meant use of computer systems to improve processes of maintenance making use of some of the live data generated. He could give some of these ideas to startups that can supply such systems to the railways.
A lot can be more efficiently done but talk of bringing private players into the railways is a political hot potato with so much fake news around.

Well, I disagree on strong leadership point. Railway had a minister like Mr. Suresh Prabhu. Hello was strong , strict and was taking measures to improve the Railway. But, Railway people didn't like him and made him go away. The people themselves don't want to work like a private institution. The fault lies with railway bureaucracy.

We need 250 to 270 km/ hr trains with minimum stopages. Connecting Delhi mumbai chennai kolkatta delhi and from this metro cities connecting 2 tier cities to travel 3-4 hr journey with speed of 160 km/hr.
A night travel and you are from delhi to mumbai or delhi to kolkatta.
Railways cannot compete with airlines over distances above 1,000 kms.
The reason is time taken to complete the travel.
Railways should try to focus on developing world class rails, trains, engines, signalling system, etc world class upto distances below 1,000 km.
It's in the freight that the railways can deliver real punch, irrespective of distance.
Any flight covering 1000-1200 kms distance takes 5 hours from the time one starts from home. On an average 50 minutes to reach airport + the passenger has to reach 60 minutes before departure + 2 hours (120 minutes)flight duration+ 20 minutes for baggage collection + another 50 minutes to reach the city from the destination airport. A total of 50+60+120+20+50 = 300 minutes which is 5 hours. The railway can compete with airlines on any sector where it can reach within 5 hours. In the case of high speed rail where the average speed is 300kmph, even a distance of 1500kms, railways can compete with airlines. Railways also allow more comfort, more leg room compared to flight, and provide Internet connectivity, allowing travellers to stay connected without paying an extra amount that one has to pay for accessing the Internet on planes. The pressurised cabin makes one tired, and train coaches are more comfortable.
Again, the comparison is for upper class for whom time is money. Lower and middle class would still travel where there is money saving rather than time.
As regards to better Roads, credit must be given to PM A V Vajpayee who created National Highway Authority of India and PM Greemen Sadak Yogna which provided good surface connective for cities and villages.
Railways has all the resources but there is no management in utilising those resources.

3. जनरल कोचेस वाली हाई स्पीड ट्रेंस । जिनका मूवमेंट संपर्क क्रांति जैसी ट्रेनों जैसा हो।
सभी पुरानी मशहूर ट्रेनों को रिवाइज करने की जरूरत है। इन सभी ट्रेनों में से AC और स्लीपर कोचेस निकालकर । डबल डेकर कोचेस लगाए जाए।

I disagree with electrification issue he brought up; it's just arguing for the sake of arguing. By that logic you just don't do anything and wait for all your electricity source to turn green, but why would you do make them go green if there is no demand for it. So, no electric vehicles, stop R&D on green hydrogen ... etc.

Check which train it was. On which route it was as well. I can guarantee that if you are not lying, that route has had a long history of late trains, and that train itself has a history of being late. You can literally check this using indiarailinfo.
Vande Bharat isn't that costly. I love it. It's much cheaper than the travel by car.

The Current Rail Minister is a complete Failure. He should resign immediately and focus on MEiTY. Except some Photo OPs and Modi's Sycophancy, he has done nothing. Every 2-3 Months, there is a major rail accident occurring. Time table is again worst, the ticket reservation system is in worst state, Cancellation charges are shamelessly high, cleanliness is again getting worse..etc.etc. Better to give the charge to the leader like Gadkariji, rather than a Sycophant. !!
