Trans harbour is another story. It is neither part of MRVC plan or CIDCO original agreement. This line was originally made at the cost of CIDCO for freight traffic around 1983. When CIDCO requested for upgrading it to Suburban standards, Railways demanded entire capital cost including the trains. Navi Mumbai plan was made in 1942, considering the population influx in Mumbai city, to have a satellite city to manage the population. In 1964, State Government created a independent body called CIDCO. Actual ground work started in 1971, by development of Vashi - Sector - 1, construction of creek bridge in between Vashi - Mumbai. First residence were employees of BARC. All mostly Government officials. Parallelly CIDCO started developing other nodes too till Panvel
Travelling from Virar to Church gate takes the train 1hr17mins for 60-70km (roughly the track length, not aerial distance!) journey. It takes a fast suburban train from Watford Junction to London Euston (approx. 30 km) 21 mins. Yes, Metro options in London take 1 hr with about 13-15 stops just like the Mumbai local route. Then Mumbai Local has it beat on speed but considering population density Mumbai needs to have a fast train that can also do Virar to Churchgate in 30 mins! Something an brand new RRTS could do. The bullet train could do that in 12 minutes. (Although, it will only go to BKC and not Churchgate or CSMT at the moment).

Very informative podcast and really enjoyed Mr Jain’s jovial demeanour. Also thank him for some fantastic insights into the working of city’s lifeline and grateful for his service to it. However, I am disappointed that the host didn’t touch the topic of safety passengers traveling on locals. With approx 300 or more deaths due to accidents every year, it is imperative that passenger safety is addressed as the utmost priority. There is no harm in sacrificing frequency or average speed if locals can be made safer for its passengers. People dying falling off trains is pathetic and downright callous of authorities in this age.
Got one clear understanding from Sir's interview is that until we have govt running railways it will always be ram bharose except for trains like Vande Bharat & Rajdhani as they have Babus blessings. Railway is purely meant for socialist purposes. As he said IR has no interest in running suburban trains as they are heavily loss making and IR officials are reactive instead of being proactive given the job security
Bhai do 1 more session how local train manage 3 min gap i mean signalling kaise hota hai. 3 min means a train is there behind on same track and perhaps a train ahead. How they manage gap and running at 45-50kmphi need to understand.
Brings up a lot of good points but should also have reflected on how some networks like Tokyo are vastly superior in terms of number of people carried, safety and speed. Tokyo suburban rail (not considering the metro / subway) is probably the best in the world, and we can do well to learn from them.
This conversation could have been much enriching...there are lot of safety issues with local trains.. cleanliness is big issue..locals are not getting modernized on time...but interviewer seems to be interested only is scoring positive points..
Harbour line not getting the respect it deserves. 1. All the old trains from central and western line gets dumped to harbour line. 2. No fast train or express trains in harbour. 3. Unnesserily many trains are going to Bandra/Goregaon from Vadala leaving very less trains for Panvel. 4. Navi Mumbai region of harbour line is much better than Thane Kalyan region of central line and also much better than Borivali Virar region of Western line but still harbour line is given lesat preference. 5. So less trains from Thane to Uran in harbour line. 6. Harbour line should be extended beyond Panvel (to Lonavala and Mangaon). 7. Express trains going towards Pune should be diverted at harbour line (CSMT - Panvel - Karjat - Lonavala - Pune) as the distance is less than ongoing route (CSMT - Kalyan - Karjat - Lonavala - Pune) and also this new route will connect Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Karjat, Lonavala and Pune in a much better way than the ongoing route. 8. Express trains going through Konkan region should also be sent via harbour line. 9. The elevated stations between Sandhurst Road and Cotton Green should be converted to normal level. 10. Harbour line needs to have more platforms at CSMT currently it's having only 2 platforms because of which all harbour trains are stopping between Masjid and CST for platform clearance. I hope CR makes the above mentioned changes as quickly as possible ❤❤
Most of your demands are logical and justified but there is no one to take it forward. CIDCO having sold most of the properties is not interested in infrastructure development anymore.
Your suggestions are just sounding like Mumbai in a wonderland when you speak about making Sandhurst Road and Cotton Green stations at ground level. That was mainly done due to already having existing live lines running below and many important roads running below. Making it at ground level is next to impossible and will result in loss of an important heritage. Secondly you spoke about having more trains towards Panvel, while that already exists my dear friend. I stay in Goregaon and to travel from VT makes me wait for almost 25 to 30 minutes for the next train to arrive. While you have a train going towards Panvel very frequently from VT and Vadala Road stations. Trains towards the Western side are clearly not “unnecessary” as we need more east west connectivity in Mumbai
Also, you can not increase the platform on the Harbor line from CST to Kurla to Mankhurd, I guess, due to space constraints, so there is no question of express train running on Harbor.
@@sandeep1194ra exactly you can never run express trains on Harbour line it should only be for suburban for maintaining punctuality of the locals and frequency can only be increased by upgrading the signaling system to the latest technology (CBTC)
@saamirsyed4261 yaa that's what if you need to make additional lines till CST either you need to make elevated line or you need to clear slums on one of the sides and looking at current situation clearing slums also cannot create additional lines as main road is very close to these lines so overall there is no viable option for making additional lines unless gov comes with very strict laws and which is also not possible due very unstable form of our government at present. Edit: also elevated line can come from mankhurd till wadala or so but not beyond till CST where will it go as CST is one of the UNESCO WHS so you cannot change the structure of it if at all you need then lots of paper work and clerance needs to be done. In short, Harbour cannot extend beyond present 2 lines atleast till wadala from CST
If you want to understand what is wrong with Mumbai Suburban and city planning, just look at the statement of this expert on Virar being the next important station after Borivali on the Mumbai western line. The population density between Borivali and Virar is much higher compared to that between Andheri and Borivali but this area simply does not get the required attention.
26:46 48 kmph is nothing to be proud off! 26:54 & 1:02:20 I don't think these claims for Metro and suburban speed is correct. The average speed of Metro is 80 kmph worldwide. However, I have personally noticed that local trains and at least some Tier 2 Metros in India run much slower than e.g. London or Paris. If we talk of new Suburban rail/Airport Express/RRTS then we can reach 160 kmph.
Invite people like ashwini bhide MD of MMRCL when talking about mumbai because IR babaus never want to improve services or introduce any changes AC locals are so popular nowdays they are filled but still IR is in denial to improve AC service and resuce fare
One more thing that sucks is that amount of automated booking counters These are not well marked, often low in number Usually put in one part of the station Instead more of these machines should be put on stations and put near every entry exit point, even parking spaces
55:00 its not like metro and railway has to compete End user will only choose one over the other because of convenience, be it for a college going student or a young graduate going to Andheri / Saki Naka for his job or a fisherman travelling to Dadar Metro lines are an alternative
Suburban railway system is very good, but speed over safety is a priority. Many people do still lost their life during commuting which is unacceptable in 2024.
Sir forgot to add - 1. Group of 4 uncles would play rummy by using briefcase as a table. Settle the account at the end of month. 2. Girls sell various kind of ornaments, accessories. A hot humid local train journey made enjoyable but adding value by these ways. Not to forget, maximum fights happen ladies compartment only. Haha Irony is ladies prefer travelling in gents compartment. Instead of ladies. This is another feminine mystery.
26:00 Bro even Mumbai has similar levels of pollution as Delhi We are just lucky to have the sea by our side Railway is very lethargic and bureaucratic in nature, bitches couldn't even start proper rail services to Uran in like 15years after the new airport was conceived.
Har Sunday mega block lene ke baad bhi central railway ki locals kyon time pe nahi chalti? Hum apne aap ko top 5 countries ke ginte gai. To hum chodke baki 4 countries me bhi aise hi har Sunday me mega block liya jaata hai? Un countries me train late nahi chalti, par hmare yaha locals 15 to 30 min late chalti hai. 15 saal pahale central locals 5-6 min ke gap se chalti thi Aaj bhi voh 5 min ke gap se chalti hei. Ye time 3 min Tak kya Kam nahi ho sakta hai. Jab kuch bhi kahi problem hota hai, to train cancel kar di jaati hai, ye nahi hota ki jaha Tak jakar vapas aa sakti hai vaha to train chalani chahiye?
If you want to find out where this gentleman’s theory fails, just visit Hong Kong and check how the MTR has completely eliminated any thought for any suburban service. Hong Kong MTR average trip length is 11.2 kms

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Sir. Why did u allow the slums around tracks
Invite people like ashwini bhide MD of MMRCL when talking about mumbai because IR babaus never want to improve services or introduce any changes AC locals are so popular nowdays they are filled but still IR is in denial to improve AC service and resuce fare
❤❤❤❤
The first motor cars didn't start being sold in 1905 as the man said, but rather 20 years ago in 1886.
Maybe you are right
@@subodhjain6809 Nevertheless, amazing walk the talk through history. 🙏🏼
I would like to interact with the person who is giving information in this pot cast.
The "lifeline of Mumbai" takes many peoples... "life"... every year. 🙃
ehhh ? 😂. I ended up nodding to every point after listening to it.
Mumbai trains seriously need to have a overhaul
it was eeehhhh good podcast😅
One more thing that sucks is that amount of automated booking counters
These are not well marked, often low in number
Usually put in one part of the station
Instead more of these machines should be put on stations and put near every entry exit point, even parking spaces
Missed contribution of Nana Shankar Sheth in development of Mumbai
Agreed
I know many people who take the journey daily even after retirement.
KY INDIAN RAILWAY LHB COACHES OR ICF COACHES KO BHI MEMU TRAIN SET ME CHANGE KAR SAKTI HE ? AGAR HA TO IR KE MULTIPLE PROBLEM SOLVE HO SAKTE HE
55:00 its not like metro and railway has to compete
End user will only choose one over the other because of convenience, be it for a college going student or a young graduate going to Andheri / Saki Naka for his job or a fisherman travelling to Dadar
Metro lines are an alternative
Suburban railway system is very good, but speed over safety is a priority. Many people do still lost their life during commuting which is unacceptable in 2024.
Nothing can complete with Mumbai Local
Yeee OP
Nice info
Sir central line ke karjat khopoli ke local trains ki badao sir

Sir forgot to add -
Haha
Irony is ladies prefer travelling in gents compartment. Instead of ladies. This is another feminine mystery.
Poor maan still choose local...
I am worried about safely in peak hours
26:00 Bro even Mumbai has similar levels of pollution as Delhi
We are just lucky to have the sea by our side
Railway is very lethargic and bureaucratic in nature, bitches couldn't even start proper rail services to Uran in like 15years after the new airport was conceived.

Har Sunday mega block lene ke baad bhi central railway ki locals kyon time pe nahi chalti? Hum apne aap ko top 5 countries ke ginte gai. To hum chodke baki 4 countries me bhi aise hi har Sunday me mega block liya jaata hai? Un countries me train late nahi chalti, par hmare yaha locals 15 to 30 min late chalti hai. 15 saal pahale central locals 5-6 min ke gap se chalti thi Aaj bhi voh 5 min ke gap se chalti hei. Ye time 3 min Tak kya Kam nahi ho sakta hai. Jab kuch bhi kahi problem hota hai, to train cancel kar di jaati hai, ye nahi hota ki jaha Tak jakar vapas aa sakti hai vaha to train chalani chahiye?

If you want to find out where this gentleman’s theory fails, just visit Hong Kong and check how the MTR has completely eliminated any thought for any suburban service.
Hong Kong MTR average trip length is 11.2 kms
