@CasandChary It was awesome to meet you at AWE, and thanks so much for coming to try out Freeaim VR shoes - Just wanted to mention for those commenting that the shoes are just skates, actually they are much more than that, more like mini Tesla's for your feet: electric with sensors and only move when it's intentional. Thanks
I'm just happy to live long enough to see the progress of VR and AR technology. Baby steps.
Just think how far we would be if facebook didn't kill the VR industry by stealing oculus from valve and crowdfunders, lying about not making it closed source and requiring you to have a facebook account then change their mind, buy out all the VR dev's then abandon them but they can't make VR for other platforms due to contracts etc. and so on. vr would be booming if platforms stayed open. If us on steam index/oculus could play on meta and game dev's weren't stuck into contracts and so on, how much better we'd be. instead i haven't seen a game come out that i was excited for in like 4 years now in VR on steam and my index. Facebook continues to abuse people and people still support them.
Me too! I say that exact thing all the time. Just live ✨️ Don't die Don't die! Lol
@@zengrathNonesense.
I'm pretty sure not 99.99% of world's population is willing to pay $5,000 for a full PCVR + lighthouse trackers, high pc specs just for something they had no idea of, and with all the past useless gimmick techs making them think VR is another overpriced gimmick.
Meta/facebook can sell the device at a loss while making a quality headset that required nothing else is very attractive price for a lot of people including someone who knows VR is great.
@zengrath Vr wouldn't be nearly as big as it currently is now if it wasn't for Meta. A lot of the momentum that vr has you can thank Meta for. They are throwing billions and billions into it.
Congrats on the presentation, 500 ppl is a lot! Excited to see your journey from beginning to now, Cas and Chary.
Thank you so much for the kind words and for being here
Those Freeaim shoes along with the circular barrier could be really helpful in a medical environment - for people rehabilitating after an injury or needing to gain confidence after a knee/hip replacement before stepping into the real world,
All you need to replicate it is just a non electric treadmill the shoes wouldn't be very useful unles for some stupid reason turning while walking matters, well it doesn't.
Thanks for showing the Freeaim VR shoes in your video! It was great giving you a demo and hope we can work together more in the future!
Big fan of what you guys are doing, looking forward to seeing it in its full glory!
that xreal beam pro thing seems waaay better than the rokkid's puck with the dozen of wires. plus that stereo camera looks promising! i wonder what the stereo pics/vids look like
Great video on all the different tech at AWE.
It would be great to learn more about the Simtek VR Hoverboard (2:15) if you get a review unit as this can be a great tool for locomotion in VR to minimize motion sickness, allow your hands to be free to do other things in VR instead of being busy with locomotion (closer to how we do things in the real world), and takes up a relatively small amount of space compared to other locomotion devices. I have some questions, not sure if you can answer any of these from your short time with it at AWE.
1. Is there a calibration phase where you need to stand up straight and press something so it knows where your comfortable non-movement/non-leaning position is?
2. Can you adjust the leaning/dead-zone settings (lean more or less to start moving) to adjust for comfort and precision?
3. How does it feel on your legs and knees (since your weight is there when you lean), any discomfort/soreness or feeling of falling if you lean a lot?
4. Can you adjust the rotation speed and sensitivity (how much you need to rotate your waist to have it spin you)?
5. What if you stop in front of something where you want to reach over but not move forward, what happens? Say you stop in front of a virtual table and you want to reach something on the table, when you lean to reach the object will that make you move forward and crash into/go through the table? Might be interesting if there were a way to turn the lean to move on/off in some cases, either manually (i.e., holding down a button on the controller) or automatically.
6. How does it feel to crouch down or pick something at a lower height/off the floor? Are you able to bend your knees while using it?
7. Any idea on how much it costs?
8. On Simtek's website, they also show other devices like a cycling and an omnidirectional treadmill, are those future products?
Thank you :)
Love your videos.
It's great to see the technology is picking up and growing.
We only need to keep shrinking the devices and make them more comfortable to use for most people.
I feel this will be accomplished in the next couple of years.
Thanks for the excellent coverage, as usual!
As a longtime fan of the EVO 3D stereoscopic phone, a part of me lit up to see XREAL's new Beam model.
And as a recent buyer of an iPhone 11 Pro Max, a part of me was crushed to hear that the Varjo scene scanning only works on 12 Pro and up.
Progress, anyway!
Oh, and I'm impressed by Vive's new whole body tracking, and the new Freeaim shoes look better than I would have expected.
Great video.
There are so many exciting things starting to emerge in the VR / AR space.
I think, aside from gaming, I'm most looking forward to VR allowing destination visits. With the cost of travel being what it is (and the unpleasant side of travel as well), it would be nice to be able to experience a distant location virtually at least.
Similarly, I'm looking forward to AR becoming ubiquitous, like smartphones. I could see the generation after Alpha being as used to slipping on smart glasses/goggles to interact with an augmented reality as we are with just casually taking our smartphones out of our pockets to check something or other, or to pass the time.
Battery technology has been making good strides very recently as well. I could see portable devices like AR glasses having battery life sufficient for a full day of regular use with high resolution and support for AI assistance.
@ThatSoddingGamer Exactly! It's the logical next step, I can see it happening in the next 15 years for sure. I'd jump at the ability to use a lightweight headset all the time instead of a phone, that'd be preeem
Great coverage of interesting new products... thanks!
That is a great idea of XR glasses that let you watch something with someone else also wearing the glasses.
When you started describing that I was so ready to follow a link to buy that.
Amazing video ! Thank you for everything you guys do ! VR Life 😎✨
Great video! Congrats on the presentation!
Been waiting for your review of the event since I bumped into you guys at AWE! Glad you enjoyed the SIMTEK hoverboard too. Great coverage as always.
Some very cool advancements! I echo others who are grateful to be alive to see these things come to life :) I see some potential safety issues for home consumers with the first two items though. The shoes look like they are designed for just walking at a normal pace and not running, but many games may trigger a natural reaction to run. The hoverboard one seems like it might be easy to hurt yourself if you got off balance and fell over, since it seems to lock your legs in place.
Great info as always 👍
Speaking of VR locomotion and the ultimate trackers, have you been able to use the ultimate trackers to basically do VR locomotion by moving your legs in real life while tracked?
So cool to see you're watching UFD Tech vids with the XReal
Very interesting collection of new VR gadgets. Thanks for sharing.
The wrap around handlebars on that first treadmill kinda give it the aesthetics of granny’s walker lol.
Thanks Cas and Chary XR. 👍🏻👍🏻
Great video! Especially excited by the haptic gloves using air pockets; can you do another more in depth video on VR haptic glove technologies? High fidelity minute finger tracking and feeling virtual items is the next vital step for VR!
Thank you for your great impressions, you are two gold treasures in the XR world.
great updates
Hi Cas & Chary!! Hi Bret!! haha You ladies are awesome! Keep killin it!
There's some gadjets here that i already knew before by other videos. But while watching your video, i felt like in '90, when the modern VR was just born. Just like computers that would take an entire block, we're coming back once again, with new and heavy inventions. One day it all will be very light, just like the VR'S we got today.
For me, the ''teleport'' feature is the best one, becaue, if i were a Google's engineer, i would start using this feature for Google maps, so we could start experiencing the enviroments like if we were there for real. This looks like to be much more realistic than being inside a 3d photograph. But like a youtuber said once: ''Never try to prove the best, because you won't be able to have it, and all the past experiences will look like crap''!. He's more than right. I got a Quest 2, a thing i've been dreaming for more than 20 years. And it's great. I'll just let those inventions get older and forget about it for a while! hehehehe
8:05 looks like the exact same concept shown in that Amazon Series "The Peripheral"
So happy the aim VR shoes are getting the exposure it finally deserves
hell yeah! thanks for this!
Cas, with the short time you had in those Freeaim shoes, did you feel like you needed the safety rail by the end of it? Does it seem like a 15 minute adjustment time is realistic to get used to that? Honestly it looked like the VR movement thing I would like the most.
She answered that question during that segment.
that hoverboard looks pretty interesting. how did it feel to have your legs strapped in the supports? it makes me think of ski boots and how they lock the lower part of the leg in place.
I feel like it needs a seat attached. What if something startles a player and they instinctively try to reel backwards or step back? Idk. Maybe it feels good and just works.
You know i find so many of these things incredibly fascinating even though a lot of it also seems pretty gimmicky. I feel like those treadmill shoes are neat though. Those certainly seem to be an upgrade to have the treadmill just built into shoes. Much better utilization of space.
Looking for recommendations on the best VR apps for fitness. What do you guys suggest?
Awesome video! AWE was so much fun!!
Looks like the SHARP glasses use the LetinAR lenses! Glad there's a company adopting them finally, they are super cool.
the xreal beam pro - does it support HDCP , also xreal air 2 / pro - do these new ones support HDCP for DRM protected OTT aps ?
If the shoes are coming out for 1500, does it come with the arm guards?
I did actually pre-order the Beam Pro, since I own the first generation Beam and the price was actually pretty decent in Europe. So I'm excited what you have to say about it. I mostly am looking forward to learning about the quality and usability of the 3D camera, since that's a feature I don't own any device for yet. And maybe how it stacks up against the original Beam in terms of performance and usefulness.
@@FlorianFahrenberger What do you find yourself using the Beams for?
@@tylerpestell I know all the ads show productivity stuff like extra screens on laptops and such. But I really only use my Beam for entertainment, mostly (3D) movies while travelling. A pair of glasses and the Beam are small, it won't drain my phone battery (which the glasses don't work with anyways), and I can just store a bunch of movies on it beforehand.
The new one, when it arrives, I actually want to use for some simple games for my kids when on the move, and for 3D filming, which I can't do yet.
@@FlorianFahrenberger Thanks! I am always curious about real world usage. It seems like AR glasses will be the future (hopefully)
@@tylerpestell I'm not that convinced that they will be. That future is certainly something that Mark Zuckerberg is dreaming about. But wearing AR glasses in public has a few major disadvantages: You are separated from the world. Yes, enhancement and so on, but generally, you will pay less attention to your surroundings and the people around you, and the people around you will (rightfully?) see you as a little creepy because you are staring off in the distance, can take pictures of them at any time and who knows what you are currently doing. It's certainly a future that Apple and Meta are hoping for, but I would actually like to see people move closer together and emphasize the human element in this world instead of having a virtual world interfere with what is really important. That (in my opinion) is going down the wrong track.
Don't get me wrong, I like AR and VR a lot. For entertainment, and to connect with people who are far away. But the direction AR is currently taking sounds pretty dystopian to me. ;-)
The Hoverboard is perfect! I have a pretty small play space and this would be huge for immersion
0:48 what is that driving in the background 👀i wanne buy my groceries like that
Could you do a in depth video on proper setup and use of the Vive ultimate trackers with quest and PCVR
The SimTek vr hover board review unit would be sweet! How much did they say it costs or consumer release date?
that ultra reality was insane, wow!
Fov of the sony headset is smaller of that in psvr2?
The VR hoverboard looks really cool
I definitely would like to see a more comprehensive review of both the 'hoverboard' and the 'locomotion shoes' if you can get them.
7:15 Will the Sony headset support 3D Blu-Ray playback like the original PS VR?
I’ve been saying that VR shoes are the way of the future for years. I really do think that we’ll end up seeing these being more commonly used, but treadmills will probably still be around to help make them feel even more realistic.
There are two AR glasses I am interested in: Visor by Immersed, and Rokid. The latter is advertising aggressively on UA-cam.
It'll be so great when using AR you could choose to either be part of a public "channel" so to speak where you can see everything in the world thats being augmented by everyone around that they choose & able to legally share publicly. Or toggle it off & just only see what you want. However then yeah you could join a friends session to share things privately between. Homes, workplaces, etc could have their own as well. Since we should definitely be trying to keep connected as much as possible.
mirror mirror on the wall, which will be the best headset of all...?
Greta report Cas, thanks! Have you seen or heard anything about Disney's Holotile? That should be an interesting development to watch also.
I think the beampro is headed in the right direction, and I predict that apple will add additional cameras to the next iphone iteration, so that users will be able to record spatial videos on their phone.
That's what's needed for XR to skyrocket, a way for people to record and share, right now vr cameras are super expensive and only a few enthusiasts have them.
For the XReal glasses I was so happy. There are too many phones and compatibilty is always a problem solution make your own. Plus it's way cheaper to buy the glasses and the phone then most new phones on the market
7:16 I am already imagining if this instead of reverse passthrough, but just a display of a virtual avatar face with probably a depth sensor somewhere on the full mask or visor for face and nearby object tracking, then you can mount it on any mannequin and it will have facial expression yet have eye contact with you. And I am also imagining, if technologies alike to be used on robots like Tesla Optimus or Figure One. I remember a company call Furrhat or something is using projected animated face on robot head, but this looks better, and it can be standalone, because, like I said, it can be mounted on any given mannequin with a human size head, even your teddy bear.
Where is the vario waitlist link?
I'm always disappointed that these advanced devices, such as for locomotion and haptic feedback always seem to be commercial only.
When those shoes started with a 6 and expected "sixty dollars" I got so excited... Then the "...hundred dollars" came and I cried inside lol
Varjo Teleport would make cool game environments especially if implemented on Steam Workshop downloads for for vr! Or just level design (make it faster and more realistic!?)
Wildly EXSPENSIVE too
30:56 mauselerimizde kamera ile nereye gittiğini anlıyor imleç ile hareketi algılayan sensörler neredeyse aynı çalışması ilginç
I could see that you have a chain around your neck with those glasses to power them without a smartphone which i think is crucial. But i don't know how small and not warm you could pack smartphone without a 5 inch screen. Maybe it's not good because of the battery...
VR technology is the future of gaming , love my VR2 👌👌
11:42 we have officially circled back to 2011s HTC Evo 3D
Anyone know of good XR meetups/clubs in NYC?
Oh wow !
Xreal should just turn the beam into a high end phone and include the glasses then my wallet would open
I really want a set of AR glasses that will replace my monitors. Most of the offerings thus far have the effective screen too far from your eye, making it VERY difficult to read text. They're great for watching movies and some gaming but I want to be able to read code, eventually replacing my monitors. When will AR companies revise their software and allow the user to control the 'zoom' type range on displays, effectively allowing more clarity for screen data you want up closer (for reading)?
I think the vive xr elite does this. Reviewers talk about reading their cell phones through it. Quest3 does it too, to a lesser extent.
Does the Beam Pro work with the unlucky Xreal Lite?
I'm not sure about the Xreal Light (if that's the one you mean), but I'll ask! Why is it unlucky tho?
@@CasandChary I ordered one from South Korea to Austria when it came out.
While the hardware was great, the software side really sucked.
1. Only support for Android and Unity - windows and OpenXR support promised but never implemented.
2. With the advent of the 3dof Air, the support for the Light was dropped - basically all the initial backers and developers who invested into a headset and wanted to develop were screwed over...
Unity is a game engine and not really a development tool for XR apps. It seems that the guys just missed investing into a good SDK and basically turned their initial demo software into what they considered an SDK, which was actually very limited in it's usability.
A sad story for a potential Magic Leap and Hololens killer :(
Still no BCI VR yet. That’s true VR and the only successful future. No matter how good an HMD gets, it’ll never be adopted by the majority of the general public and have good use time unless it’s completely BCI/Neural VR.
Gotta wait till early 2030’s for it though since VR got a wrong start (a/c to Kurzweil) 😢
Gabe Newell seems to be the only one related to the gaming industry working on BCI VR (Company: Starfish Neuroscience).
That VR hoverboard looks like a horrifying contraption to me. Imagine it malfunctioning and you falling backwards as it spins around uncontrollably 😧
What exactly do you think is in that thing, an engine the size of a truck? It's spinning by your leaning motion. I bet it's unbelievably difficult to get it to spin continously and actually impossible in the matter you mentioned.
If you organize with VirtualRealityOasis and maybe some other Euro VR UA-camrs, maybe it'll be an easier sell to send one Simtek unit on a little European review tour.
1:30 so instead of horror games prompting "Press Shift to Run" it will instead say *RUN*.
ive been a hardcorel pc gamer im ready to be mobile and maintain that level of power exciting
These shoes might be game changing if they're done right. Threadmills didn't cut it and we desperately need something to move naturally in game, joystick movement is the biggest immersion killer in VR rn
To me the treadmill shoes are useless until I can run and jump and they don’t fall apart
For you there are slidemills like the katwalk c2 core and omni one. You can also make one with vive trackers. My. Channels only video is about that.
I think jumping will always be tricky unless the simulation uses 1:1 gravity. Otherwise, there will always be a disconnect.
I bet you can get used to it just like we all get "vr legs" for motion disconnect, but it will simply never feel great.
Unless of course you have a harness that can suspend you to match the gravity difference, like the one they use in Ready Player One.
That hoverboard sounds like some great tech, but I can't lie, it looks like some sort of weird "standing" toilet. 🤣🧻 That aside, it's terrific to see so much more awesome tech coming our way. Thanks for the info! 👏👏
8:13 im getting emperor palpatine vibes. Image the company ceo with eyes on a mannequin head, everywhere.
As a VR games and AR application developer I personally think these platforms failed to be mainstream. My revenue for games is now next to zero but in 2018 it was decent enough to live in LA.
Sometimes, those futuristic things just look more like trash, but at the same time, they are needed to evolve the technology. It always seems they can be done in a simpler way-less is more.
The Quest 3 is AMAZING and doesn't require any leg trackers because it automatically tracks body movements within the stand alone headset.
No need to attach something to your legs so why bother.
Screw it I guess I will spill my guts on this since I'm not going to be the one to make it happen. Regarding Teleport, Ive had this vision for going on 7 years or so except the application I had in mind was for use with Real estate, it was not long after covid kicked off that I wanted to "scan" homes and other types of property to allow say real estate agents to be able to tour WAY more properties SAFELY when they wanted to purchase a home. Commercial real estate could greatly benefit from this as well. However, I'm just one dude with a vision, I wish I was capable of securing the resources that were needed to make that happen.. Ah well.. Can't win em all
14:23 what are these glasses?
If I remember correctly, that's a Qualcomm AR glasses reference design, so not one that's publicly available.
Wish the beam pro had a screenless version the same size and general design as the Beam 1. I don't really want to need to look at the phone or wave it about when using it somewhere like laying down on the grass or in bed. With the current Beam i can hold it in my hand while laying down and not have to move anything other than my thumb to use the physical navigation and media buttons. The beam 1 just about does the job so i'll stick with that, but it is pretty slow and laggy and buggy, i feel like the processor in a 2 year old $100 xiaomi phone beats it.
Cas it is unfortunate that you didn't mention the Quest 3 which offers everything you reviewed in one stand alone headset.
Meta is the ONLY WAY TO GO.
Vive: now making house arrest game look more fun. LOL
I can walking without with this special shoes with Meta Quest 3 in my room, this shoes is not needed😅😅😅
samsung will announce a ar glasses with google and snapdragon on Q4!
PS5 needs a wireless VR headset with other functions extending accessories and extra battery pack, maybe?
The QUEST 3 offers everything the Beam does without problems. It also lets users open multiple screens and dominates the Beam at every turn.
Quest 3 is the most advanced VR+AR headset available at a very low price. Best of all you don't need to buy a phone, change operating system and buy a Beam headset.
Thats true what you typed there but the weight of the Meta Quest 3 and its bulky and weirdo/nerdish look will not be usefull when you want to use them in a cafe or in a park in public. People still laugh about tech nerds with awkward headsets on their faces in public. It´s okay for home use , or may be even in the office, but in public !? No way !
That´s the reason why the AR feature was miniaturized and is accepted much more by people as those smaller AR glasses almost look like a regular pair of sunglasses.
I'll wait till my kid grows up then.
Future is now.
not the flying cars, but the Holodecks and Simulations and artificial intelligence.
Got my first VR Headset (Meta Quest 3) a few days ago and the only reason to get out of VR is because iam sweating in my 30 degree rooftop apartment to much while wearing and moveing around.
Ready Player One type shii XD
What impresses me the most is that we still on a baby level with no significantly breakthrough or leap forward. Except ofcourse that we don't have to deal with the solely outdated and unusable Augmented Reality tech anymore and have now made the big step forward to Spatial Computing. I mean that's really a HUGE thing.
for marketing.
Can't wait to see what happens when they get the help of AI or AGI in development. I still aren't able to closely grapple onto the fact that they had those black and white crap cameras inside the quest 2. And now inside the quest 3 it seems it still are crap cameras which happens to be able to project the bare minimum on what you would expect. Not to mention the lying down mode which only arrived a few month ago and is still experimental. I mean fuck put good cameras inside and make 200$ more what the heck...
I mean don't get me wrong "Heeeyy yeaahh teeech" but ...pfff...örfgskljingfs
oh and those quadrillion $ non consumer products don't count because nobody can afford them plus they look inconvenient.
I'm btw still super excited with the quest 2 and their update policy etc. don't get me wrong...
Quest 3 + decent head strap and facial interface is a couple hundred less than a vive xr elite, which has good passthrough and more ram.
There is no apostrophe when writing plural words. VRs and ARs - although it makes no sense to say VRs and ARs to begin with. It's just VR and AR.
Just when you think you start to get a grip on this world, Sony announces a new VR headset? NOW I am confused 😂
How are they running half life Alyx on a laptop? What am I doing wrong with my desktop!?
Whats wrong with Alyx for you? What are your PC specs?
I run Alyx on a 2016 Alienware laptop. Admittedly I have to turn all the settings down. But play, enjoyed and completed it 😅
If I'm strapping and buckling multiple things to myself it needs to be for an exhilarating experience. Doing it just to "walk" makes the product feel more like a disability product. I reckon VR accessory makers should aim for more extreme sports experiences.
