3:08 Höfner lol, I think you ment to say Hohner "The Prinz" ;)
I don't think that Thomann/Harley Benton must fear for legal steps.
Who should take them? And on what grounds?
Fender? NO! It's a different headstock, no problem.
Hohner? NO! What can they say? "Hey, they faked our fake!"?
It's a cool looking guitar with pretty decent pickups, so a pretty decent sound,
but maybe a little too civilised for a Tele.
This is not the guitar for a raw twang.
But at these HB prices, you can buy an entire collection of different Teles.
5 different ones for €900.- is a nice collection:
- this one;
- a 50s butterscotch;
- a 62 Custom sunburst;
- a 69 or 73 Thinline;
- a 73 Custom or a 73 Deluxe
If you would want that all original made in USA, it would set you back 5 to 7.5 grand USED.
That's not inviting for young poor guitarists.
But these Harley Bentons are.
Good affordable instruments are the first step in music education.
And once you see the talent of your kid blooming, it is always possible to make the next step and buy a better used Tele from Fender or a used ASAT from G&L.
H.S. Anderson now makes these guitars. Prince even used em. Made in Japan for $3100
I bought one... Nut and bridge left original... Everything else upgraded,,, Dimarzio's , Gotoh Stagered locking keys , CTS pots , Kaish 3 way , Orange Drop Cap.. Copper shielding though out.. Some time polishing frets... My total Cost including guitar $468.00..... End result is one of my favorite guitars of many that have cost me thousands of $.... It is a very thick heavy swamp ash body , but I believe that is where the Guitars project investment value pays in results... I've thrown in the Dimarzio Air Norton (neck).. and Sugar Chakra (Bridge) and it is simply a Rock Guitar hopped up on Lead Solo goodness..... Peace
Just got one of these, already have it torn apart. It came as a playable and good sounding instrument with decent action. The fret ends and fretboard edges were slightly sharp but not terrible. The tuners are kind of crappy but usable, certainly. My main problems are mostly asthetic, really, even though they are structural in nature. My bridge was mounted well off the centerline of the guitar (and crooked) and the pickguards and tone control plate were not straight as a result. This also caused the strings to not pass over the neck pickup like they should really. This was caused by the heel of the neck not being cut even at 90 degrees. It is close, but not square so the neck departed the body at an upward angle with regard to the centerline of the body (toward the ceiling if you were playing the guitar). It also departs at a forward angle (the direction the strings pull it) from the neck pocket...more than a shim could really properly correct (yet it still took the factory setup and played reasonably well). This odd neck angle not only led them to install the bridge and other hardware off center so the strings would track down the neck properly, it also caused neck pocket cracks on both sides of the neck from stress, occuring in the typical place for a strat or tele. Overall I am still pleased with the guitar because I certainly could not buy a body this nice and a set of pickups, neck etc. for the small price (159)I paid for this "cosmetic b-stock." I have the skills to make it a very nice guitar so with lots of work I can correct it, but it is not ideal obviously. It IS a nice body and neck with some good features but you might expect to live with some warts if you don't want to take the time or have the skills to do some major surgery yourself. I will say this, if a person bought the guitar I recieved and wasn't bothered asthetically and took this guitar for a good setup by a knowledgeable tech, they would have a nice playing and sounding instrument quite cheap. I will detail the guitars construction in another comment.
Thank you but...
It's an ash body with a maple cap and maple neck... like the Hofner. I don't know if the original was one piece or four piece but according to what I have researched so far, the woods are similar so it isn't just 'for looks'. Can I just say also - ash with a maple cap, binding and a maple neck with a dual truss rod for £130 is a fekking amazing foundation - well done Thomann.
You can get the actual noiseless Stratocaster 'hot blues' pups Prince's luthier put in... Kinmans still stock them. Which will beef up the tone. Then Gotoh tuners, Strat hard tail bridge/saddles and a bone nut. Get your luthier to polish / level the frets and add decent quality 11 / 12s rather than the flimsy 10s.
So my point is, this guitar can be more than a Prince fan boy bit of memorabilia if you put a little effort in. You can have a fairly unique tele / strat hybrid (which Prince was chasing) to rival a USA Fender... and for half the money. And it will be flexible - add a decent, clean valve amp like a Laney LC30 -112 (or the Fender Reverb Deluxe it is modelled on) and a Joyo Taichi dumble clone pedal, and you will have an over driven tone and sustain not unlike Robben Ford's tele.
Peace.
I´m definitely considering. Not to play, really, but just for decoration. Like you said, it would go well with a nice Prince poster. Prince was the master.
I've been looking at this one for quite some time now, and I might pull the trigger soon!
It would probably be freaking sweet to throw in some nice humbuckers, in single coil format, and give that bad boy a proper set-up! Perhaps a good bone nut and a fret dress too! ;-)
Happy holidays
Cheers! :-)
I had a Hohner 'Prinz' model in the 90s. It was the only guitar that I gigged with. I was gutted when I had to sell it to pay two weeks rent. When i turned up with the cash a day later the landlord said "no, it's airtight' and I never saw it again. Worth a fortune now!.
I have the newest version of the HB modded out completely and it's awesome.
I think this gidfiddle sounds nice🔝
It is on my to do list.
If you really love the stax sound and really funk and r & b or blues, you will like it.
A good match is if you use the black star amps.Sounds great.Another mans coffee is another mans tea..
Last but not or should i say.....it all depends on the player and thats it. Anyway.Nice review👍🏽
For those who are interested, the body (on mine) is made from two solid peices of ash that sandwich a strip of very dark wood. On the original madcats this was walnut, but this wood looks even darker than walnut to me with a very tight grain pattern. It is also VERY hard. It looks like ebony but may just be very dark (nearly black, even unfinished) walnut of some kind. It has then been covered with a maple veneer that has a centerstrip of the same black wood. This veneer is very thin, maybe just slightly thicker than a playing card. The back has no maple veneer like the original madcats, it is just the nicely finished ash. The bindings are not perfect, with some finish blemishes, but honestly no worse than some gibsons I have seen.
The two peice neck is rumored to have a "fake" skunk stripe because it has the separate maple fretboard. But it isn't fake...it has been routed and filled with some wood that looks similar to the wood in the body. It clearly has been cut out and filled and there is glue squeeze out on mine in a couple of areas showing this as well as an area at the heel where it wasn't filled entirely and a hole where you can see into the neck rout. Why on earth a neck would have a separate fingerboard AND a skunk stripe I cannot say, but it does. And it makes no difference as far as I can see. The neck is very straight and the frets level on mine and the neck is very thick. It is substantial! My feeling is that this helps the sound of the guitar, it has a meaty tone with good sustain.
Hope this helps anybody else looking for details on the construction.
Thanks bro , that thing is kinda heavy , can't believe. ... but man I love the tone !
Mine came with white pup covers , strange
@@michaelworse6034 that is strange...weird.
@@michaelworse6034 if you read my other comment I detail some of the issues mine came with. I have corrected it, but wow, it was a bear. I ended up buying a gotoh bridge and saddles and Gotoh tuners and roller string trees. I refinished the neck, and filled and then redrilled every screwhole in the guitar. The guitars are cheap and it shows. Even the screws are absolute sh!t quality. I broke a neck bolt removing it! And I can tell you it required very little torque to break it. Two other screws broke on the guitar reinstalling them, even in pre-drilled holes. I have been working on guitars a long time and have never broken a neck bolt. It IS a nice guitar now, and it sounds awesome! It comes with good pickups and I love the body construction. And you can't beat the price. I just wish they would charge an extra 75 bucks and built it properly the first time, because fixing their sh!tty work is a lot harder than just doing it right the first time. Actually, if they sold them as kits, undrilled, that would be great. They could even charge the same, just make sure the neck routing is correct and frets are installed well and leave the rest, it would make an awesome kit.
That combo with the Orange hit dead on. The Joyo was a nice match, too.
The first guitar Prince had also sounded bad, you can read that it was hard to get a proper sound especially on stage. But that was his unique sound, later his guitar(s) was modified, so it was not an original Hohner any more
It will make you go CRAZY!
Great guitar!! Would you be so kind to review the Harley benton R-457BK Fanfret? You are awesome and so are your reviews!
Hey, I'd like to see that too…
Alpharius That would be really interesting...
I'd love to see that!
This was a nice fair review, but the Hohner Prince had was a rebranded HS Anderson Madcat. And actually, the wood the HB is made from is very similar. Most of the Madcats (and I believe Prince's Hohner) were ash with front and rear maple veneer and a solid center strip of walnut. The HB is exactly that minus the rear maple veneer, so with the right pickups, you should be able to play Purple Rain, much like royalty. That said, a madcat re-issue is $3,100.00 and this is $200.00 ish, so I imagine it likely isn't quite as good.
I wonder, after reading some stuff about Purple Rain: who played the intro part? In the movie it is Wendy (difficult chords), and gear pages say the album was recorded live (although heavily edited afterward). Anyway, if so, the legendary intro would be played on a Rickenbacker (modified, a.o. with Fender PUs).
@@fritsvanzanten3573 I read that it was Wendy and she was only 19 years old. I saw a UA-cam video in which the same was stated. Do I know 100% this is true? No, just what I've read and what others have stated.
The Purple Rain, although the album was mostly played and recorded on Hohner, is with intro played on slightly modified Rickenbacker with Boss CE1 chorus pedal, as stated by Wendy who recorded it.
It was really a surprise for me, but if you listen to intro a bit carefully, you could recognize that Rickenbackers' sound.
"tonewood" related to electric guitars is pointless. It's the electronics, amp, speakers, that give you your sound. This guitar and any other electric, played through the proper rig, is a "purple rain" guitar.
I love Prince!
Weird eh
Henning, Leslie, you guys make my day. Love your show. New fan! Thanks for the great content. Keep rocking!
Yeah, we're fucking talking! For anyone watching this review, 11:06 is where this thing really shows it's a Tele .
lmao loved that intro with the grass robot hahaha
I actually ordered this guitar when I didn't even know that prince had it :) anyway.. The day when it arrived prince died..
btw which pickups would you recommend to put into this guitar? :)
Lina Ivanuta Prince ran both pickups as strat bridge pickups. But Tom Anderson’s would be good.
I believe you are holding a copy of the H.S.Anderson Mad Cat HS-1 which was made in Japan in the 70's. You can get the real deal if you have several thousand spare dollars kicking around. For a lot less money you can get a Hohner Prinz which is a copy of the Mad Cat. For even less the Harley Benton TE80 NT Deluxe is available, but Prince was playing a Mad Cat.
3:08 Prince's Tele was not a Höfner, but a Hohner!
ahah... same thing
Nee.
"It's too thin".
Roll down the tone knob some? It's a silly thought, I know, but it's as much a part of the instrument as the rest of it.
I like the pick guard on that guitar better than the Prince guitar...and those "thin" sounding pickups are so good for funk!
You make that thang sound better than the other Dudes
I actually prefer this over the on with the Filtertron humbuckers. Like the thin clean sound, especially with the Beale street it was gorgeous.
Put a .033 tone cap in and roll it back about 50%>> MAGIC ✨
Nice looking telecaster. Im a sucker for the shape and design. Good job on review
Nailed it ( That's what she said ) with the Joyo Beale Street .
A Splendid Tone And a Guitar 🎸 WOW Gotta Get one
Princes Guitar was a Hohner Professional Series, I used to have 4 from that range in the 1980's, they were all well made guitars, but at that time Hohner were seen as a budget brand, the Hohner Tele now sells for a lot of money, its good, but not worth what it is selling for, the only one I have left is the Hohner SR Heavy, which had a Kahler copy trem, (piece of junk), but the Guitar is very playable, mine is zebra pattern, and had for 40 years, so wouldnt sell it, still gig with it sometime, tbh, the well made Chinese copies are just as good now, their Goldtop is also collectable
mine came with really bad setup couldn t be fixed , sent it back!! goonna try another one later...
I just ordered one and waiting with baited breath. I didn't want one to sound like Prince, but always loved the look of his OG Mad cat. For $159 USD, you'd be hard pressed to get a nicer guitar with a solid ash body.
I Trust you , You Helped me build my pedal Board
Prince's Tele was a Hohner not a Hofner but it's okay :) I mean, you have two German brands with almost similar names so it's easy to confuse...
There was a third german brand with a somewhat similar name: Hoyer, they made some nice teles, still got mine from the seventies.
Nice Instrument, good demo
Phil Strat.
Love it!! (Sqeeeeeeeeeele!)-(No seriously, massive Prince fan). Checked Thomann, they do not come in a left handed version 🙁😥💔
Love the look. As he says though it's "bright and thin" and it certainly sounds like it here. But I wonder how much it would cost me to get it fettled/setup and the pickups, etc. brought up to something decent. But at £165 for the guitar I suppose I would have a large budget for the work!
Good but you forgot to mention that the shafts are definitely rather long... #justsayin
What, no snow yet in DE? Nice lawnmower Henning... 😄
Please tell me where u got that Guitar stand in the beginning of video very nice. I want one
I cannot say I am a Prince fan myself but it's a nice looking guitar. It's does very well with the clean tones and has a great Tele sound too. Nice guitar for the Chicken Picky too even if you do not get the diddle der like they want :))))))))))).
Nice, a nearly orange guitar sounded really good thru your Orange amp!
Donald Pleasence is still alive living in Germany
Lmfao.
hey awesome guitar and cheap price , have some expensive guitars and i consider was not good inversion that i did through the years , but im salivating for that guitar, i got some harley benton ultimate drive and thats an awesome pedal , i used to have millions of brands but this is very functional, congrats good price and for play what do you want more
Hey, can you do a review on the Michael Kelly Hybrid 55 guitar? It's a Tele with humbuckers that does split-coiling and it has an acoustic mode/tone and an electric tone. You can play either way or you can blend the tones together too. There's not a lot of videos out on it, but it definitely has my curiosity peaked and I'd like your expert opinion on it if you don't mind sir :)
I'm a huge Tele nut and this guitar looks pretty cool.
danmar007 bone? or graphite? Lol sorry man, couldn't resist!
:-) Pistachio
Man don’t hate on Prince , I have watched about 5 videos on this guitar -all different players . & I know 1 person who has this same guitar … it’s not the STICK ! It’s always the Sticker , watch when I get mine and run it thru my Hot Rod …Deluxe custom , I’m sure I will change the tuners & the trees …and maybe even thro a re amp in it if I can find a Bertolini
Loved your review
Got one, upgraded the pickguards with the right color Prince stuff, upgraded the bridge saddles with steel ones (and not plated PLASTIC!), upgraded to CTS pots and a 4 position switch. Now it doesn't sound so thin any ore and gets me through any Chic gig without any problems.
Wait... Chic..?
Where'd you find the right pickguards? I'm thinking of buying one and I'm already considering what would go into modifying it.
@@Krisfit138 www.originalscratchplates.com/product/mad-cat-tele-prince-homage/
I like that holo enterprise lamp
Every TN 80 i see in UA-cam is different. Different neck more white, more yellow, the dots different some are more spaced out some more close. So what is it if I order? I like yours more than the one listed in the site.
gee, i could do with a shelf of a quarter ton of amps...nice review, appreciated
was looking at this t-type before this vid. didn realize it was like one that Prince had until this.
Found it: www.rollingstone.com/music/features/tom-morello-on-princes-inspired-soulful-fearless-guitar-playing-20160518
Please listen to some Prince Nelson Rodgers and show the man some respect please. I love your videos and jokes, but Prince is no joke.
indeed, no musician should take the piss out of Prince..he was an absolute legend!
We can do joke with everybody. Don't be fundamentalist ... I say that
Although I'm a fan of The Artist. Joke is not disrespect ...
but the shafts, are they rather long ?
Not sure. Is it a bit bright?
That's what she said
Ok, will this culminate in finally revealing your signature HB on christmas eve? 😉
Didn't Prince have a hat...? Funny. The TE-90 FLT VW did sound better and paired with all of the amps in lovely ways. I want those in between Humbucker and single coil type sounds as heard on the TE-90. Really nice unique sounds with those PUP's.
The TE-80 is a bit too thin as you mentioned.
Are you reviewing an sc custom anytime soon?
I would also like to see the SC-Custom review through all those sweet amp's. TY.
Hello, do you can help to can buy this guitar in lefty PLEASE?? is so much frustrating to can't enjoy it.
Put a set of Kinmans in it and that's Prince's sound
I think you focus way too much on the Prince aspect. I'm looking at it (gonna get one soon) as an unusually good looking Tele style guitar with some cool differences (bridge, pickups). In fact, when guitars like this first caught my eye I didn't make the Prince connection, and I'm a fan. As a blues/soul/funk/r&b/jazz guy I like the thin, glassy tone. This would be an excellent guitar for the types of music I most enjoy playing, at any non-ridiculous price, but for under $200?!? BTW, nobody's gonna fooled by this guitar. The pickguard is tortoise rather than the leopard-y one that the real thing and other clones have. I dunno.. just seems like you're not the right person for this guitar mostly. Not really meant for anything more than mild to medium crunch.
Hey, I worship Prince. Can you teach me to play like him!
If you were properly worshipping the prince you would already know how to play like him
What I love the most about @UCrPHxHPnSvHzNNYbJlYoyGQ videos is that I really respect his advice but I also really, really look forward to ignoring it. It's a lovely Tele with a strat-style single-coil in the bridge for an amazing price! Brilliant idea!
I love harley and put a fender pickup amps or demarzio
Please make Harley Benton BigTone Term review
Prince's guitar wasnt a Höfner, it was a HOHNER
Make more videos on harley bentons
You have to realize that it sounds brighter and thinner because it has strat type pickups. I bought the guitar a time ago and as a tele fan I changed the bridge pickup for saymour dauncan Twang Banger Strat APST-1a now I'm really satisfied :)
Hahaha, funny as usual Henning! One of the reasons I subscribed is because of your wit! Nice to see this guitar in natural daylight, it really shows off the woodgrain. Nicely paired with the Orange! VERY NICE! Nice robo mower by the way lol.
The shafts are rather long?
Henning, can you tell thomann to redesign the harley benton lettering? The gear is great but the "logo" is just awful.
they already did... watch Prototype 5 of my Signature!
Haha...thanks! I didn't saw that video jet.
Here is the link if anybody else is curious.
ua-cam.com/video/nG0i0QMk-IM/v-deo.html
Don´t you still owe us a full test of the beautiful Vox AC-30 head? There was something ...hm...
So, what amp was Prince using for his lead sounds? I`m just curious. Some Fender probably?
BTW Henning is a fan of Nickelback, and he doesn`t know any Prince songs... omg... what a dilettante.
Jestem Genek Prince used mostly Mesa Boogie MK IIC+ & Lonestar. Also Soldano SLO, Orange.
Mesa lonestars and boss ce5 and boss flangers and Digitech whammy pedal
Mesa Boogie Amp run clean with Boss DS-1 for distortion
He used Messa Boogie amps in the beginning.
Question...... when you are planning to play some serious guitar ... do you put importance on the pick you chose ? Also .. exactly what type of pick do you use/prefer ?.. I ask because I'm ready to invest in some good quality picks ... thanks man
Chicken Picks, Badass 3
EytschPi42 ... t.y. I can always count on your honest input.
Isn't this a little late? I think someone else on UA-cam already modded this guitar to death and then sold it on ebay... I'd replace so much on this there would be nothing left from the original but the body and neck... Harley Benton has better T models for less
Good review though 😊 the shafts are rather long... It would be nice if they were shorter... It's a little on the thin side
Can you do a new Harley Benton series please!
Hey Henning, I want to ask something general about the Harley Benton guitars, do they have a single or dual action truss rod?
Dual action, starting on the cheapest models. It's super rare to find new guitars that don't. Come on, the HB are affordable, but not junk.
I'd love to see a review of the Harley Benton FanFret FBB 2018 DLX!
I'll probably do one 2 weeks in the future....
But I'd still love to hear your opinion on it!
P.S.: You are a big inspiration for me as a "producer", guitarist and musician!
The MadCat (Prince-guitar) is about 3000 dollar
Summer?
We are all UA-camrs!
Nice guitar. Too bad it’s not in the Harley Benton line anymore.
What do you mean ? It's on the site
The shaft is rather long.....😂😂😂😂
where is that riff from? 6:07
You either shot this a long time ago, or your part of Germany is unseasonably warm... I mean, a lawn mower in the intro? :-)))
I was thinking the same in the last video too. My mind was like: "Whhaaaatt?? That's unfair! He had such nice weather lately...?". And I live in Germany too! :' (
Must've been some time ago. Weather has been shitty here the pas few weeks and I don't live that far away from H.
Animals at the... beginning? What have you adopted now???
Hohner, not Hofner.
Actually it does sound a lot like Prince's H.S Anderson Mad Cat.
It weighs a ton
I'm guessing that if you are a UA-camr then we are UA-cames. Maybe. It's a theory.
Wroxhawk Youtubbies?
Can you demo the epiphone Les Paul SL please
you would have to talk to Gibson about that!
I dont think they would listen to me XD
Your neighbour must be from the balkans when he didn't put the facade on his house. Bare brick FTW
MAN I LOVE YOUR JOKES :)))))) YOU HELPED ME IN MY DEPPRESSIOOON :)))))))
lol i couldn't past the shafts are rather long either hah
Why not compare Harley Benton to its real competition: Squier and Epiphone?
Because Fender and Gibson would never send me guitars for a comparison like that!
Really? That sounds kind of petty. Strange. I suppose Thomann wouldn't go for it either. Oh well....
Haha you make me laugh, “Leslie” who I guess is your missus in the background “The shafts are rather long” “are you stupid” Like a low budget two Ronnies sketch. Great reviews, I guess I’ll get the FLT not a telething
He doesn’t know about the two Ronnies he’s German.
that lawnmower seems to have a mind of its own :) Beware Skynet scenario :) PS great guitar, kinda gross pickguard. a sort of cheetah pattern would have worked much nicer and impaired more of a Prince-y overall funky sexy feel to the axe...PPS did you just say "it seems the shafts are ...rather long!"?! nice touch, keeping it classy! :)))
I've been saying 'Hofner' wrong for over fifty years....
the shafts are rather long
