Black Panther Training: Workouts for Reflexes, Agility and Jump Height

  • Links and further reading below! This video will talk you through all the training you might need in real life to become fast, agile and explosive like Black Panther.
    Obviously in the comics T'Challa has superpowers and a vibranium armour - we'll be skipping over that. Instead, I'm focussing on some interesting techniques to boost jump height, flexibility, proprioception etc.
    For instance, did you know that stretching your tibialis anterior (a muscle on your shin) can improve jump height by reducing the antagonistic resistance? Or that training the flexor hallucis longus (big toe flexor) will also improve jump height and running speed?
    I also discuss using eccentric plyometrics (such as depth jumps) and how to learn and use multiple martial arts with quick reflexes.
    Enjoy! And let me know in the comments if there's anything awesome I missed that can help you train like T'Challa!

    I see what you're saying about mastering martial arts, and sorry if this point has been raised previously. However, I believe instead of thinking about it as mastering separate martial arts schools, the hero (Batman, Arrow, Black Panther etc.) would master base techniques.
    Take for example, a roundhouse kick. The base technique of swinging your leg in a curved path to strike a target is found in Taekwondo, Karate, Muay Thai, Savate and a number of other arts. While you're completely right that each style has nuanced differences, we can see from MMA fighters, that the fighter adapts the technique in their own way, and I believe that's what would be the case here.
    You're right in that if you instinctively throw a round kick like a Karateka, you're not going to be a 'master' of Muay Thai, but you can still impliment the similar move to learn the style to a very high level.
    I completely agree with you that mastery of more than 2-3 martial arts isn't really feasible. Mastery of 'martial arts' in a general sense may however be much more likely. Also, in a practical sense, the hero would likely focus on techniques with greater martial efficacy. A lot of high-frequency movements that are used in MMA, would probably be a great foundation for a more realistic superhero to learn imho.
    Love the videos! Always learning something, please keep it up!

    • @TheBioneer
      @TheBioneer  6 років тому +11

      +Alex Donaldson Yeah very true! I guess it's all about the way it's phrased in comics etc. They tend to say he mastered 'all martial arts' when mastering 'martial arts in general' is a bit easier to swallow (though still not really, seeing as this is all before he starts his superhero career too!). But yeah, there are definitely some strikes that crop up a lot and that are generally useful, which would serve as a good foundation. Thanks a lot and cheers for watching :-D

    • @icenic_wolf
      @icenic_wolf 2 роки тому +1

      On one hand, there are several different ways to throw a roundhouse kick; a roundhouse is different in the way you step, which muscles you use to apply force, etc, in TKD vs Muay Thai vs Hapkido (for starters).
      On the other hand, there are only so many ways to move your joints, and lock up your opponent's joints. Once you get to a certain point, martial arts start looking more similar than different. But I'm going to say that getting there takes at least 15 years of serious dedication to an art, so that you can more easily start to see the similarities; you won't really be able to see them until you really, really know why they work and instinctively know how to adapt them depending on your circumstances.

    Something i do that works wonders for me is walk by stepping with my toes first instead of heelfirst... It makes it harder to walk, you get almost twice as tired for the same distance/time... It made my fighting footwork waaaay faster, also it makes my footprints in sand shallow, and made my steps silent... But thats an extra...

    All fighting disciplines aka martial arts are movement patterns: they all have a fighting rhythm; all have more than one style of striking and defending and counter while striking, Wadu Ryu has a Crane wing block as does Shotokan and Khyukushingkai, however they all also have inside forearm blocks too. So you will get interference principle within the same discipline until you master the new technique: or; you slow down focus and think about what you are going to do prior to doing it, taking time will accelerate learning as you focus, the more you focus the more densely branched and permanent your neural pathway becomes! I have a few more points but I don't want to spoil your upload as I enjoy them. Thanks bro :)

    Learning all martial arts is highly infeasible no matter what superpowers of learning a person would have. Time and access to instructors willing to teach would be a whole other issue. The more likely scenario to me after having practiced and taught martial arts for 40-plus years would be to learn the small percentage of techniques that constitute 80% of the value of any martial art. And then doing that with several different categories of martial arts. For example, a basic exposure to two or three different styles of kung fu that are completely different from each other might make sense. A basic exposure to a grappling system like Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Basic exposure to judo for throwing. A basic exposure to Filipino martial arts for stick and knife fighting. Beyond that, a person who is an elite athlete with the ability to integrate does Basics into his own unique use could still be very effective. And then keep in mind that the Black Panther would have also had access to his own tribal systems that would amount to mixed martial arts which I'm sure would include striking, grappling, and weapons use. The key to all usage is partner training and sparring in all categories. That would only be possible in a warrior culture that would give him access to a wide variety of Partners, including different body types and temperaments.

    Thank you Adam! Great video :) Aside from propioception, how much would you say familiarity factors into performance when executing some actions? For example, I recall having bad reactions to being upside down or simply unbalanced (panic sets in, brain forgot how things like breakfalls work) and then suddenly things sorted themselves out (brain says "eh, we're the wrong way up again, you know what to do"). From my perspective I had been practicing inversions a lot more than actual techniques, but is there a connection?

    I truly appreciate your videos. I do. And it's clear that you put a great deal of thought in developing a strategy to develop them. I won't take anything away from that. It's a serious, valiant effort. But you're making videos about training as if being an elevated human is possible (physical and mental). Again, I enjoy your videos. I watch them all. But I don't take these videos (comic book training) seriously. Example: Black Panther has a unique agility (like Spiderman) to jump *extreme* distances and heights without effort. When, in reality, Javier Sotomayor (Cuba), in 1993, jumped an incredible 8.03 feet in the air. A world's record. Almost reaching skeptical abilities...and that was 8 feet. Black Panther can easily jump 12 feet high, without effort. With your training, someone may learn to leap 4 - 5 feet with consistent effort throughout the year. Again, love your videos...but perhaps you can ground them into reality.

    I would like to put my 2 cents in on the conversation of Batman learning all (or 120 as you have heard) styles of martial arts. While you are correct that no one can learn ALL the martial arts of the world, some are more practical and adaptable to street fighting than others. Also, some other factors that you have to take under consideration is that not every criminal that Batman encounters knows ANY martial arts. Also when fighting, the skills you possess be it one or 2 or 3 martial arts will determine your victory (look up the 12 minutes of Game of Death that were filmed and see Bruce Lee take on different styles while going from floor to floor). When Ben Affleck was interviewed for Batman v Superman, he said that after achieving a level of muscularity, he went further to become more of a "brawler's" body. As a brawler, you're beating and taking beatings (look at the knife to the shoulder he took in BvS-- also when they show him bare chested he has all these scars on his back and chest).

    I think for super hero training one should learn
    Muay Thai, jiu-jitsu (or judo), krav maga/pekiti tirsia kali , Parkour .
    If u train those u r ready for almost any situation. These covers almost every aspects of fighting.
    If u learn these no other martial arts are needed .
    And obviously u can feel like a super hero (bcz u added Parkour) .
    Now if u wanna learn all martial arts or any martial art (that seems good to u )
    U can try shaolin wushu bcz it's a traditional complete martial art . It covers all aspects including yoga gymnastics ..and obviously punch kick grappling weapons etc
    So if u learn wushu u can learn any other art easily .
    Though I would recommend martial arts I mentioned above .
    I hope it helped u 🙏❤️.

  • @StarlasAiko
    @StarlasAiko 3 роки тому

    On the subject of learning "all" martial arts, the issue is that martial arts tend to train you to internalise specific movements. MMA has found out that particular martial arts types are only really useful against the same type of martial arts (Judo is only good against other Judo practitioners, etc...).
    If you however avoid internalising specific motions, you only need three arts: Capoeira or King Fu for flexibility and to train your brain the flexibility to be able to perform extremely complex movements and movement combinations very fast; Krav Magag or Karate or Tai Boxing to learn quick and powerful moves to hit or kick harder; TaiChi for precision and accuracy. Don't train any of them to internalise their specific motions.
    This way, you should be able to respond correctly even against techniques from arts and styles to which you have never rehearsed a counter.

  • @musiconthego697

    Great video! On the martial arts personally I do Jiu jitsu and Krav maga and I think it's great since it covers most of the aspects all in all that one may use in a street fight or general combat. (This doesn't include weaponry) But I think the main Beat Philosophie is the one from Bruce Lee which is only take the best moves "most useful ones" of a art and adapt them to you. Which I think is propably one of the best methods. Now I think you noticed this too but what I noticed is that in case of martial arts a lot of them are mixes of people who created it and followed the same philosophy like Bruce Lee and that's also how I think Bruce Lee created his Jeet kun do "if I wrote that wright". Like as an example I think Judo, Karate and Aikido are all great martial arts, but I think they lack other moves all by themselves. Put them all together and you get Jiu jitsu... So my philosophy is learn a rather effective and modern martial arts which has went through many cicles of being redeveloped and addapted and you will propably have the most effective Elements from the different martial arts that it's composed of and even then you yourself can adapt it even further to yourself by using the said principle.

    Silly story but it relates to a mode of reflex training I using at the time. For a while I would train by throwing a rubber ball at a wall alternating which hand I caught and threw with. About 2 months into this I was walking down the street with a friend and he tried to throw a bannana peel into the garbage beside me. Without even thinking or looking I caught the bannana peel reflexively.

    When it comes to martial arts I also think its important to take complimentary martials arts so like Muay Thai +BJJ which is what most of MMA is comprised of. If you take martial arts that can easily flow into each other it will make learning eaiser and can help you not so much unlearn techniques but being able to know which one works best for a particular moment
