I think it's important to mention that Looker, Anabel, and Ingo have ALSO time-space traveled, and I feel a deeper plot is emerging, one that exists beyond the individual game plots
why when a pokemon when evolving looks different modern-day blue aura shift changing form, past a storm swirl spinning around instead of shift changing in the past, now it's slowing changing. not related to the storm exactly?
Another theory; Arceus brought you to Hisui specifically to stop Volo. Volo's plans are obviously sinister. He's ''hunting'' Arceus, is willing to tear apart time and space to do it, but most importantly he is an incredibly strong trainer. Volo is the only one who can control 6 pokemon (not to mention Giratina), the only other trainer who even comes close is Kamado with 4 pokemon. Plus, throughout the story we are told again and again how our player is uniquely skilled and very proficient in battle. This leads me to belief that we are the only one there that can match up with Volo, which could imply that Arceus brought us there because no one else in Hisui could beat Volo.
I came to the same conclusion I also caught the word play Volo is a Pokemon Wielder not a trainer his Pokemon are weapons not partners imagine the kinds damage a wielder could of done to the timeline in the grand scheme of Pokemon "Training" had Arceus not plunked you to show the better path.
I mean, isn't that what they said in the game anyways? "Maybe you were spit out of the time-space rift just to stop me" I'm pretty sure this is basically confirmed.
The thing I find most interesting about Volo is the lines he gives us explaining his reasoning. He implies he suffered many heardships and generally had a awfull live, which motivated him to learn about the old myths. Then there is the way he describes Giratina. "Arceu's discarded child." The way he talks about it, makes it seem like Volo is projecting on to Giratina in that moment. Which in turn makes me believe Volo probably was abandoned as a young child. Which could explain why Cogita and him don't know eachother, if he isn't a time traveler.
This is why I don't agree with the idea that he doesn't care about his Pokémon or that Togepi isn't the same one in the last battle. He wants to make a world without pain and suffering and the way he talks to Pokémon in the game seems genuine. There's also a photo of him with Togepi at the photography place. Why would he go take a picture with a Pokémon he doesn't care about? And he very well could have had a full team aside from Togepi and she was simply the last to evolve. After all the Togekiss has the same traits as the Togepi you fight earlier.
@@friendofjellybean maybe, I can see that. I don't think this game had enough battles in general, one more with Akari and Volo wouldn't hurt much imo, but great point
Theory: Ingo was recognized as a strong trainer by Arceus recognized Ingo as a strong trainer, so he was brought to stop Volo from causing chaos, but he was found in the Icelands by the Pearl clan, he then lived with them and became Sneasler's warden. Arceus realized its plan failed, so it sent the protagonist to stop Volo which eventually succeeded.
what protagonist if you mean the dp protagonist then your wrogn the legends arecues game protagonists dont have the some names as dp akrai is not dawn japen name so so the for it can tbe dp protagonist
@@ssjgotenks2009 the name you are referring to only goes for your partner. You the player are most likely from a d/p/pt bdsp timeline. Why? Easy You are at least 15 years old meaning you beat the champion and explored and probably completed your pokedex. Meaning you who's the strongest trainer in sinnoh with great talent and wisdom when it comes to pokemon where chosen by arceus to fix / create the current timeline helping people and Pokémon understand each other better inspire people and reconfirm arceus trust in this universe and people
Arceus : Hmm..it appears as though the human I kidnapped and threw into a dangerous land with no memories is not solving the problem...What then, should I do ? Arceus :.... Arceus : Eureka ! I shall kidnap a human CHILD !
A lot of your questions are answered by Volo himself: He says he has the blood of the Sinnoh people. In other words, Volo’s ancestry dates back to the time before the Diamond and Pearl Clans, to the time when the Temple of Sinnoh was constructed. That’s how he knew about the Plates, how he was able to contact Giratina, how he knew Cogita, etc. It’s not that he came from the past. He learned of this stuff through folklore. Perhaps Volo’s ancestors moved away and became separated from Cogita’s though, hence why she seemingly doesn’t know him super well. Also, Volo did not use the distortion to come to PLA time. Instead, he opened this one up.
Actually Volo again gives us the answers himself: When explaining his reasoning Volo implies he had a very hard live growing up and then follows this up by calling Giratina "Arecu's discarded child" that's a odd choice of words. I'm pretty sure all of the games refered to pokemon as arceu's creations before that. I think Volo is projecting here. Volo is a orphan who was abandoned by at least one parent. He then got adopted by the Ginko guild and at one point learned about lady Cogita. Most likely due to Ginker, Cogita drops his name and seems to be at least somewhat familiar with him. I think she might be the one who suplies him with the "weird machines" I also think she might be connected to celebie, which is how both theories could even be tied in with eachother. Cogita does have the Pixie plate after all.
@@jyotiarora9988 I don't think you quiet caught what the game was implying here. Cogita isn't a airhead at all, she was on to Volo pretty much from the start. Cogita puts up a front of some kind, she keeps her cards closed whenever she interacts with people and generally isn't a easily trusting person. The cutting board incident was her purposefully railing Volo up and was one of the first incidences where we saw Volo's own mask slip. She clearly knew what the plate really was, why else would she have given it to us as a reward in the first place.
This pretty much covers everything. Volo is well aware of his bloodline and was the only character who knew Arceus. He is not a time traveler, but a person who spend most of his time studying the ruins. He got lost in his way of research and his hunger for knowledge drove him for bad decision.
Volo's statement about capturing Arceus even if it takes centuries makes me wonder if he somehow survived into modern day Sinnoh. We know it's possible to extend someone's life indefinitely because of AZ, and Volo likely wouldn't have any moral issues with sacrificing pokémon to do so. With the player causing Giratina to have a change of heart, Volo wouldn't be able to convince them to open another Space-Time Rift. So maybe he saw an opportunity in Cyrus and subtly guided him, hoping that someone trying to unmake the world would be enough to draw Arceus out
That's what I was wondering. He said he'd wait centuries for finding Arceus and I do wonder if Volo could achieve immortality, making us encounter him later on. AZ found a way to live for thousands of years so its not crazy if Volo found his own way to achieve this. Someone suggested Volo digging up the machine or working with AZ but timelines don't add up. Your idea with Cyrus is a good idea. You do wonder how that guy knew so much which could've been a lot of research. But even then, it's not like there was much to go on. Who would have told him the red chain when only Cogita knew of it before?
I think you missed the point, it was a hyperbole statement that he’ll dedicate all his time to finally meet with Arceus. I’m sure Volo as character will change, what drove him insane was his hunger for knowledge, he even saids in the end what he should do about it. Probably the dev will make him interest in another thing he didn’t realize, just how he didn’t realize that Arceus responded to him which was sending the Player to oppose him.
@Chocolatierchick Unless he had kids before he went to Hisui, two thousand years ago in our time people had kids YOUNG, heck even a couple hundred years ago they had kids young, simply because the life spans were much shorter and people were considered adults much sooner. If the same holds true, even if Volo was only 19 or 20 in Legends, he could still have had his share of kids that went on to become the ancestors of Cogita and therefore Cynthia. Even if he were the same age as Akari / Rei, he could have had kids of his own but he's clearly older but point is still there. Of course that's if Toby's right and Volo does come from even further back in time then Hisui.
There are I'm afraid some big holes in the details of this theory though, some I noticed: 1. If Volo was literally one of the ancient Sinnoh people then why would he merely say their blood runs in his veins? That's the kind of phrasing used when such people are your ancestors. 2. If Volo lived back then why is he so intent on being able to meet Arceus? Having never seen it is clearly a major motivation for him. Yet the ancient Sinnoh people did apparently meet Arceus, it's image is even on that ancient temple before it is destroyed. Not to mention the Ancient Hero battled against Arceus. Yet Volo says he had to do a great deal of research before he became convinced Arceus even really existed. He also makes it clear he learned most of what he knows by researching ancient ruins, listening to stories from Cogita, etc. A lot of this he wouldn't need to research if he lived back in those ancient times, they would be things he could readily already know. He wouldn't need to learn to read the heiroglyphs about the ancient hero's journey. 3. The "Hero's Verses" are called only the "Old Verses" to my knowledge, and were most likely written by Cogita. Doesn't change much but I noticed you kept calling them Hero's Verses. Also I don't recall any indication the hero fought Giratina, the hero's claim to fame was fighting Arceus. 4. 11:23 She specifically refers to the shadows being seen on Firespit Island, not the Cobalt Coastlands in general. We are also told a surveyor was attacked by a ghost there. Given the Missfortune Sisters were hiding out on the island, it seems most likely that the "ghost" people saw was Charm's Gengar, and the shadows were simply the bandit sisters trying to hide. 5. I'm not getting the reasoning for Volo somehow convincing Giratina to rebel back in the days of the Celestica people. You state it as being the reason Giratina was banished, but Volo specifically says that Giratina already wanted to fight Arceus when he first sought the creature out, and the reason it wanted to challenge Arceus was out of anger over being banished. The order of events just don't line up right for your theory to work. In other words the violence that led to Giratina's banishment and its resentment happened before it met Volo.
I agree with your 5th point especially. The impression I got from Volo was that he felt rejected by Arceus and as such, then turned towards Giratina in a "enemy of my enemy is my friend" kind of way, and Giratina went along with it because it got an ally against Arceus. It didn't seem like he provoked Giratina, but rather joined the cause since they both despised Arceus.
most points i agree but 4 doesnt add up as much its likely the sisters didnt move tot he coastlands until after we beat them up in the mirelands and stuff like arcenine dying and there being probablems seems to be a longer issue not somethignt hat happend like 2 days ago. So its likely its giratina who lives around there and it becoming more restless. It still doesnt mean much since thats where giratina tends to life when he isnt stuck on the other side
@@pirakax12 Certainly the bandits had nothing to do with the previous Lord Arcanine's death, but I'm still inclined to think Giratina also had nothing to do with it. Giratina's never been associated with causing high waves or storms, it makes more sense to me that what happened was a random tragedy.
Regarding point 4 and the shadows. I dont remember thr exact wordings ingame. But I kept having to think of th Dusklops we catch, that spooked the warden ans was later necessary to make Basculegions food. Dusklops has def been around for a while, making the Warden too uncomfortable to go there. And possibly has been used for a while to make the food. Basculegion is also another ghost, as is the beach filled with ghosts towards the night. The cobald coastland as is already has alot of ghostly presense. The shadows they mention that were seen around firespit didn't remind me of Giratina at the time. And we later see the storms from Thunderus, which I see no reason why they couldn't have been roaming around beforehand just aa much. So this "scary omen of storms and shadows" mightve even been a mix of Thunderus' doings and the many ghosts that call the coastlands their home. Tho just some quick ideas. I would have to read the text around the Lord again
Wow, thanks to your comment. It's a pity, I think it's most carelessness than manipulation, but in these super interesting theories by youtubers they always change slightly what is written or explained in the games. Unless we have the script in front I guess it can happen to everyone… including us the viewers. So thanks for your comment. I like to think Giratina is the shadow they refer to, but I guess it was Arcanine all along.
So here’s a thought… what if Volo is actually a descendant of Cynthia, and Cogita is the true ancestor to Cynthia and thus Volo as well? Him being from the past is likewise interesting, but this could very well be a case similar to Eobard Thawn from the Flash series/comics. Lots of time shenanigans.
The only counterargument I can think of is the presence of Hisuian Arcanine on his team. If he really does come from even further in the future than the player, then it really should be a regular, Kantonian Arcanine, as I find it hard to believe that he'd just happen to own a surviving member of an extinct species-the likes of which have never resurfaced anywhere else. And I don't think it would be very wise of him to time-travel without any Pokémon by his side, only to catch and train up a whole new team from scratch. But then that team of his has also mastered the lost art of the Strong and Agile styles, so... Hmm...
@@ShycoWar I agree, it would’ve been quite eery if he had a Kantonian Arcanine. But then again, all of his Pokémon are in these new Hisuian pokeballs anyway, which means if he did have a team of Pokémon with him, they either had to make the jump to the future with him (if he came from the past) or would’ve been contained in more modern balls first (if he came from the future). Then again, it’s very possible he released them and re-caught them with Hisuian balls in order to facilitate his disguise. Another interesting note is the player and Ingo both use pokeballs because they’re more comfortable with them. None of the clan members use pokeballs. And we don’t even see other members of the Ginko Guild with Pokémon. It’s very possible that both the ability to handle a team of six and using them in pokeballs is a sign of being from the future.
@@flysoup3607 Nobody has pokeballs, he has wielder in his name for a reason. And if there was hisui fossil’s we should’ve been able to get them in the other games but nobody knew about the hisui forms in the games before this. He couldn’t have gotten fossils. And like I said, he has wielder in his name for a reason, literally nobody really has pokeballs so he couldn’t have traded since most wouldn’t know growlithe exists.
@@erickreyes7902 Honestly? I think it would be utterly hilarious if Adaman and Irida (or their future kids) eventually got together, and that union later down the line spawns Barry. Barry has Irida’s blonde hair and Adaman’s impatience. He’s also always slamming into you, so you could say he has an issue with /space/. Snort.
As interesting as the theory is, I feel like it doesn't quite add up - Volo never mentions getting to Giratina twice, only that he followed old myths of his people. If anything, I feel like he may have travelled to Hisui with the Ginkgo members, and have been a descendant of the original Celestica people who left. The other big thing is that Pokemon has used accents a lot in this game to demonstrate character backstories. Ingo uses a lot of train speak, Kamado uses galarian speak, especially when stressed, and Laventon obviously is galarian in his language. How does this apply to Volo? He uses completely "modern" speech normal of Hisui. Even when he reveals his twist, his speech never changes. So what about the other qualities? Well, tales of Giratina still existed, so he could have gotten them from his people, if he came with the Ginkgo, it would make sense that he doesn't know Cogita, and his outfit, well, I bet he actually got the Galaxy clothier lady to make it - after all, she can make more. He looks to me to be someone trying to mimic all of the past's behavior, while simply not knowing why they behaved in such a way. The Space-time rift is definitely from Giratina's last mishap, but it is never mentioned that anybody helped Giratina. In fact, Volo implies that he had to convince Giratina to try again. If Volo had been with Giratina the first time, I doubt convincing it again would work well. The biggest thing, though, is the speech. The game specifically calls out how multiple characters speak. Because Volo never reverts to an older accent, I doubt he ever had one (and thus, was not from that time)
Volo is an amazing villain and I would love to see him return. Maybe a variant of him that succeeded in his goal will appear as a member of Team Rainbow Rocket.
He could play Giovanni and the other villains like a fiddle lmao and the only ones that are sus of him are Cyrus and Guzma(and maybe Lusamine if they had let her into their team lol) For Cyrus, he could read the history books, but for Guzma and Lusamine, it's a gut feeling(because I headcanon that their ancestors are Adaman and Irida for Guzma and Irida and Volo for Lusamine lol)
Fun mini theory, the statue in eterna city was built by the diamond and pearl clans. Since the city was built on the celestica ruins they likely would have needed to make some room for houses. And with the knowledge that their almighty sinoh was more than one pokemon they could have built the statue to celebrate their coming together and honor the past in some way by creating the almighty sinoh as if it was one pokemon.
I like this, it also explains why in the original gen 4 games, the legendary isn't obviously one or the other, because it could have been designed to look like either.
I actually disagree with this theory, mainly because it takes away a lot of Volo's accomplishments, if this theory was true then Volo didn't really hunt down every piece of information about ancient Hisui and the Legendary pokemon because in his time everyone knew. Personally I think that the first Distortion was caused by Giratina shaking of the chains of Arceus and striving for the first time to kill God himself with his bare hands while Volo in present day Hisui just gave Giratina a path back to our world and a strategy to eliminate Dialga and Palkia from the field of battle allowing him to attack Arceus freely as all of Arceus' allies are gone with the Noble Pokemon and the rest of the Creation Trio tearing the world apart in a frenzy.
I mostly agree, except that from what we know Giratina only developed its resentment toward Arceus and desire to challenge it after Arceus punished it for violence that must have been unrelated to attacking Arceus (a common theory being that Giratina was too violently zealous in how it tried to maintain balance in the world). Even then it simply wanted to challenge and potentially usurp Arceus, it's change of heart to wanting to protect Hisui with the protagonist (as well as the damage it did all having been Volo's idea) makes me doubtful it truly wanted to kill Arceus.
I would like to know where your giratina info is coming from. Also, volo was far superior to giratina he literally mocked him and giratina follows his orders like he was his trainer too.
@@Ryodraco I see it as similar to Susano'O's challenge to Amaterasu. He made a mess of things and his father exiled him to Yomi (why I think Giratina is part Ghost), but he later makes things up to his sister (now the ruler after their father). He even protected parts of Japan at some point.
@@jyotiarora9988 Volo's just being a sore loser there trying to blame his failings on someone else. Pokemon following orders is a matter of partnership, not dominance.
yeah. to be exact, volo and cogita's names also come from philosophical phrases. cogita comes from descartes's famous "cogito ergo sum" (i think therefore i am), while volo comes from the counter phrase "volo ergo sum" (i wish therefore i am). similarly, although cynthia could also fit in the "i think therefore i am" philosophy, her name sounds like sentio, which is used in the phrase "sentio ergo sum" (i feel therefore i am)
Volo is also the italian word for "fly" and "flight". "Io volo" = "i fly". Also in the italian version of the game Volo has a different name: Ethelo. Ethelo is the nintendo variant for the real greek name "Ethel", meaning >
Or you know...Maybe Volo is just...Immortal?Cogita seem to imply that she would potentialy outlive you when she "lend" you the last genie pokemon,so it doesnt have to be time travel.
I sorta agree with this. His bloodline might age longer than the typical human, but it could just be Cogita. Cogita is OLD!!! You can tell how old she is due to the old verses. I found another verse that was literally just a recipe (as I face palmed) lol. I'm curious if he'll make a cameo in future games!
@@George_Gogo01 that's the thing with the very slow aging of his blood line. He wouldn't have to travel. He could still be around. But if he did somehow travel in time maybe it was caused by Arceus to cause him to repent. But also seeing as he had giratina he could've somehow got trapped in the distortion world and if you think about it time often works different in stuff like that so he could very well spend as example 24 hours there and it pass 24 years outside if we put quantum realm logic on it. Its the world of Pokemon many different outcomes are highly possible. And none would be shocking.
@@MimiSimps Yeah, but i just think making him a time traveler would be kinda useless compared to making him either immortal or slow-aging...plus,that would help connect with some other "immortal" like AZ.
I think he is a "time traveller" myself but more in the sense that he's an immortal, passing through time the long way, given that line at the conclusion of his story arc: "No matter how many years, how many decades, how many centuries it takes me!". I definitely agree that he's from the past around the time of the ancient Sinnoh people. My personal opinion is that he has become unhinged because of his immortality, and being an immortal cursed to wander the earth naturally you might want to have a word or two with God about it going through whatever means necessary. Immortality is an already established thing in the Pokemon universe a la AZ in X&Y. I would love for him to return in a future Pokemon game still alive after centuries, maybe with a redemption arc.
The only thing about this theory is that there is probably still more to see with a potential dlc so whatever we see then could prove this right or wrong although very solid theory
Worth noting (since Toby seems to have struggled with this): Ginkgo is pronounced as "Ginko". The second g is silent, which makes it way easier to say. It comes from Ginkgo Biloba, a species of tree notable for being particularly ancient and having potent medicinal properties.
But they clearly do know each other. Cogita comments on Volo like she has a fully formed opinion of him already. They may have only known each other briefly, but that is because Cogita isn't a member of the Ginkgo Guild. She waited for the Ginkgo Guild, the heirs of the Celestica people and the hero of Hisui, to make their return, to play their part in the prophecy she has guarded. Nothing about this requires Volo to be a time traveler.
@@HairyJuan they're descendants of the same civilization, but even if they have blood in common that doesn't mean they'd see each other as close enough to be real family. Especially if Cogita is centuries old, she may not care if Volo could be some great, great, great, great (and so on) grandchild or nephew of hers, beyond being willing to share some of what she knows with him about Hisui's legends. Indeed that she did share with him may mean quite a lot, since it seems she otherwise kept her knowledge secret from the people living in Hisui, waiting for the protagonist to arrive in front of her.
I dont think volo necessarily rebelled, I think he did live in old celestic town but I do believe celestic town was most likeley killed off. Its probably why he says he's seen terrible things happen to him. I dont think he's nessecarily the person that opposed the hero, I think he had no other choice but to resort to giratina, but hey thats just a theory A GAME THEORY!!
Something I haven't seen a lot of people catch, volo is a Pokemon wielder not a trainer. The kind of damage he could of done with spreading / Respreading that doctrine alone could of had far more reaching consequences than time space distortions. Like rewriting the entire Pokemon are partners not swords of war aspect.
That's just because the modern terminology of "trainer" wasn't used yet. Everyone who battles in Hisui is a "wielder" because battling isn't mainstream.
Its a cool theory, but as a lot of holes. Why do Cogita and Volo look alike, but don't seem to be close/related? To start, they do clearly know one another. They're not strangers. I'd say they do come from the same bloodline. The Ancient Sinnoh people moved away, I speculate Volo himself (or his family) left as well. But Volo returns to seek out Arceus after the Hardship he endured. Perhaps his clan offshoot died, like what happened to Kamado's village. He joins the Ginko guild so he can explore the region/ruins - Being washed up on the coast, this can simply be his journey back to Sinnoh, or something to do with the hardship he mentions (Eg: Boat sinking). This would explain how he'd also know where to find Cogita, where his people come from. Holes in the theory -When were these poke'ball invented? how would he have these pokemon thousands of years ago if the technology didn't exist? He has the pre-evolutions of his final team, there is no reason to think they aren't one in the same. -Volo and Cogita do know one another. They've clearly met prior to the player being introduced to her. -Volo didn't convince Giratina to go against Arceus in the past. Volo himself states this, that Giratina already wanted too face Arceus when he come across him. What went down between the pokemon had already happened before Volo meets Giratina. -Volo, with Giratina, open the portal that is currently there in hopes of bringing Arceus forth. -Volo talks about how much research he had to do, including talking with Cogita. If he was from that time, this wouldn't make sense. Even Cogita mentions he ignores his duties in the Ginko guild to search ruins. -He states the bloodline runs through his veins, implying he's an ancestor. Not that he is one of the original Sinnoh People.
Oh, him having Arcanine makes so much sense now! I always found that to be kind of random and couldn't think of an explanation. Thanks for finally enlightening me. 😅 Also, the Gible line having ties this old to the Sinnoh/Celestica makes for an improved explanation as to why Crawdaunt is in the Celestic Town lake.
the thing with the Arcanine theory is that Volo's Arcanine is female which means she cant be the Lord Arcanine because in the game they use Lord for Male Nobles and Lady for Female Nobles (like Lilligant & Sneasler)
Well Volo is a researcher so, yeah, researchers can know about the things they research. That’s pretty much the job description for them. I would recommend reading the 20 old verses. But still pretty good theory :)
I just wanted to add to the time traveler lore that you have presented. I feel like it is very much possible that Volo is a time traveler from the past and we do have precedence that individuals from the past can be from ancient times. There are no humans that I can cite offhand but you were able to find in the space-time rifts Cranidos and Shieldon. Two Pokémon that have long existed before the Hisui region
Maybe a bit off topic but if it helps, Eterna city in French is call "Vestigion", a contraction between "vestige" which can be translate to "ruins" and "région" which is the same word in English. So litterally "the region of ruins". Made sens that Eterna was build upon the Celestica ruins while Celestic town was build in the last settlement of Celestica people! :)
Such an amazing theory! I haven’t finished the game myself but helped my kiddo with hers so the whole time I was thinking “how does Volvo know this when the clans that were there don’t know all this stuff?” Another great theory! ❤️
after the main story volo directly tells us that he has always been fascinated by ancient hisui myth and legend and has dedicated his entire life to figuring it all out (i could say more but i’d rather not spoil exactly what he says)
A theory i thought about: Cyrus screwing with the legendary pokemon in Diamond and Pearl is the catalyst that causes you to travel through time in PLA, and he might also be the reason for so many timeline inconsistencies between multiple pokemon games
Hmmmmmmm. My theory has actually been that he isn’t a time traveler, but he is particularly long lived. And so is cogita, and maybe so is Cynthia. Like their bloodline has some sort of infinity energy weirdness going on, cogita is the one who has been around since ancient times, and Volo grew up hearing her stories. I think he is her grandson, and I also think that he’s the one who made Cyrus into a protégé. I actually think he might still be alive during the events of DP. But I’m still working on that
My only problem with Volo being from the past is that he's stated that he is a descendant of the ancient sinnoh people. I do think he might have some sort of weird immortality factor since at the end of the battle, he states that he'll wait however long even decades or centuries. Idk of anyone other than ash that could live for centuries
Volo also said “even if it takes me centuries” I think it would be cool, if Volo had a kid, and raised it to seek out Arceus, and so on. Meaning, Cynthia has some alternative motives. Would be cool if Cynthia turned out to be evil all this time
Personally I think that those alternative motives were died down Cynthia couldn't be evil or she'd take giritina in platinum or either the origin duo in bdsp I like to think after a while volos madness ... Died down in the end. One or two ancestors are bound to think that it's not worth it
While playing the post game, I got the feeling that Volo had done all of this before. Practically the minute you get up there, he explains everything he’s done in such a level way and seems to have no trouble owning up to it. It made me feel like he’s done this before. Like he’s gone through this multiple times, constantly cheating the system to come back and try again. Idk how he’d pull that off, I just got that vibe from him. After he loses, he admits defeat quite easily. Even after seeing you get the Azure Flute, he loses his composure and simply leaves instead of fighting you any longer. He swore he’d get his way, even if it took him centuries. It really felt like he really *could* wait centuries.
What if volo was a time traveler that after he saw that his civilization in touch with the gods especially giratina fell and wiped out became angered about how arceus and/or palkia and dialga could let this destruction take place. So he set out to create a new universe where this civilization never got destroyed or where giratina ruled
As of Scarlet and Violet's 4 ruinous legendaries I think Volo used them to use the Crater and the time rifts to go to Hisui and try and capture the three gods of Sinnoh. This makes the third villain that has attempted this.
I see a lot of people saying these characters are all ancestors, but no one's really talking about how they could actually be reincarnations. Volo being reincarnated into Cynthia would be a twist.
@@justiceiria869 Volo said he would meet Arceus one day, even if it takes him centuries. This comes full circle when Cynthia meets Arceus in the Sinjoh Ruins event, over a century later.
@@J43RH You can't prove any headcanon is more canon than anyone else's headcanon, unless the creator says so directly or through the game's lore. So ancestors and reincarnation, so long as Volo only looks like Cynthia and has no actual confirmed relationship to her, are only as canon as you want them to be.
I personally think reincarnation is a bit more likely. And in the true sense of Buddhist reincarnation. Having seen the words of Arceus, he slowly becomes a person who causes less destruction over time. Until he finally is reincarnated as Cynthia, who seeks out truth unlike Volo, who sought power.
While I have a completely different theory of my own that goes completely against this one, I love to see you back and theorizing! Awesome video as always and good luck with the Zelda side of things!
I knew Volo was up to something and not just a merchant, but I got softlocked with the Cresselia bug so I never got that far before seeing this. Glad to see my gut feeling about him was right :)
I love how, when Toby mentions other theories, he starts kinda bouncing on the balls of his feet. It's so clear to see how much he loves this work and is truly passionate.
Just gonna debunk that bit about Volo escaping through the Space-Time Rift real quick: when you catch Giratina then talk to Laventon, he tells you that Volo returned and gave him the Greasious Stone before disappearing again. Therefore, he clearly didn't disappear through the rift. Sorry..
That's not what he meant. The theory was that Volo escaped through the first space-time rift when it opened in the past, not the one you close during the game. Volo is still in modern day Hisui after you catch Giratina, but that doesn't negate the possibility that he came from an earlier point in history.
I want arceus so bad. Family fell on hard times but I feel like I’m living vicariously through tubers like you! Thank you for making me smile with all of your videos!
I definitely think we will see Volo somehow someway again. Maybe we will see him in the next Legends game? Maybe he’s going around the world trying to find a way to defeat and steal Arceus’s power.
I think he was just born there, his family probably has a long line of story telling/history. With him being curious it'd make sense that he's just spent all his life gathering Intel on pokemon.
Ginkgo trees have symbolism in longevity and endurance. The trees can live for a thousand years. Names usually mean something in Pokemon. I love this theory. I agree
That moment when you realize your Pokémon game just didn't play the proper music for the battle with Volo and Giratina...like my game literally just played the standard trainer battle music.
him saying he'll wait centuries kinda read to me like he was somehow immortal ( probably though some help from giratina). it'd make a lot mroe sense for him to just wait and hang around until another space time rift opens than him just so happening to land in the same time period as our player characer too i'd say. This would also allow him to pop up in literally any game in any time period going forward.
I don't think he's a time traveler, but he implied that he can live hundred or thousands of years. I think celestican people don't age, and that's why Cogita looks so young despite knowing so much as well.
Given how Cynthia just loves to show up *EVERYWHERE* in the games following her debut, this theory, as ridonkulous as it sounds, doesn't sound too Farfetch'd since Volo is her ancestor.
I feel like you over looked that Volo is a descendant of the Sinnoh People and obsessed with the story/myths of his People. While Cogita just focuses on passing down the stories. Likely they are the last of there people. Even more likely their home was the Sinjoh ruins and its how they spread to Sinnoh, Johto and Kanto
The moment I met Volo, I said to myself "You're going to be the villain, aren't you?" And I'm glad I was right, cause that boss battle was tough! (I was down to one pokemon when giratina appeared, cause I decided not to revive any of them, not knowing that would happen)
It makes sense when you take into consideration Volo’s outfit at the end and how it is weird that everyone has one ancestor in Hisui but Cynthia appears to have two both Cogita and Volo
Maybe he’s more immortal somehow than actually a time traveler? He mentions as he leaves that he’ll take as long as it takes to take over the world. Even if it takes centuries. What if he saved Cyrus as a kid and raised him to do what he failed to do in DPP 🤔
None of this requires Volo to be a time traveler. Cogita is supernatural, she states something to that effect and she suggests that Volo has been grilling her for information ever since they've met. In the Ancient Retreat, there's a Ginkgo Tree; The tree under which the descendents of the Ancient Hero and the Celestica swore to return to do their part. Volo purposefully beached himself in the Cobalt Coastlands as a reference to Ronald McDonald (himself half Scottish, half Chinese) doing to same, learning Japanese and the Ainu language. In the real world, this was done because Japan wouldn't allow foreigners in, so he fabricated the circumstances where he would have no choice but to become stranded until he would be escorted out again. Since then, the Ginkgo Guild must have gotten permission to move in with larger numbers, with western-style wagons that bear the Ginkgo leaves that tie them with a civilization long forgotten. By the way, there's a whole other civilization that this video kind of skips over. I'll be making my own video for that. Either way. This feels really contrived.
I personally don’t think Volo is a time traveler. I think that he was handed down the stories of his people in great detail so he had more of a basis to go off of and more interest. Idk about Cogita. She could be some distant relative or they aren’t related and eventually their descendants have relations. My big theory about Volo and how his final words tie into diamond, pearl, and platinum is that he wrote down his plans, ideas, and how to go about it for them to be handed down but they got into the hands of Cylleene (I probably spelled that wrong I’m sorry) or one of her descendants or straight up into the hands of Cyrus where he then changes the Galaxy Team into Team Galactic and had the exact same goal as Volo (as far as I remember) to make a new world based on Volo’s writings. The only evidence I have for this is that it makes narrative sense and i think it’s a fun idea but I could totally be missing something so please let me know
I found your channel while trying to find a comprehensive video comparing all locations in Hisui to what they become in D/P. I haven't found one yet, but I'll bet if anyone can make one, it's you
What if instead of a time traveler, for playing a part in the events of the long past, Volo is cursed by Arceus to have immortality and be forced to watch everyone he knows grow old and die and to see their descendants be scattered to the four winds until there is only a remnant to remain. This would explain his quest and wanting to see/defeat Arceus. He wants the curse removed and after he fails he simply leaves with no fuss because he knows he will be alive the next time the events are right for Arceus to appear. I mean a precedent has been set for at least what seems to be immortality in the Pokemon world by AZ and the aftereffects of using the ultimate weapon so surely the "Pokemon god" could inflict a similar effect on someone.
Um, I'm not trying to be a party pooper, this is a pretty good theory and all, but the game itself debunks that if you pay attention to the dialogue, Volo admits that everything he knows regarding the hisui legends and Arceus, comes from Cogita, when he takes you to meet her the first time. She even admits that when the player tells her what Volo did. She basically says he always wanted her to tell him more legends and never imagined that his hunt for Arceus and subsequent actions were the reason why he was so interested in her stories. He also tells the player that he's the one that opened the rift using Giratina, he just didn't expect Arceus to pull the player through it, and only let/helped the player do everything because he knew they were chosen by Arceus and that they would eventually lead him to it.
the player wood be form anther game or gen 4 far far future as he cant the player cant be the dp player as the dp female nameis not akari it hakri so it cant be the some paosn
Something I noticed is Volo's ideology, his reveal. It's the same as Cyrus. Whilst Volo is not the ancestor of Cyrus. What Team Galactics more corrupted mind set. Cyrus knows about the red chain. Desired a new unuverse.
Time travel seems enourmously farfetched to me. The way I see it is that Volo and Cogita are just straightup immortal (or capable of just getting really damn old) My reasoning steams from two pieces of dialogue: The first is the one from Volo that you too covered. What leads me to thinking he is no time traveler is his wording. He says he will continue(!) trying for centuries, no matter how long it will take him, indicating he has an intent to actively try for centuries at a time, instead of wanting to do it in a few centuries. Second is dialogue of Cogita. Once you caught her "remarkable pink flying Pokemon" she says something along the lines of only borrowing it to the player, the Pokemon returning to her after the player dies (heavily implied that this death is caused by ageing; This is almost certainly not a threat.)
You forgot something, why Volo has to ask Cogita about the legends and the past if he is from the past? He should know about that. And Volo says that he opened up the space-time distorsion using giratina, so he couldn't travel through it.
Volo knows what he knows because of cogita. He even says it when you first meet her. And he said "I'm not coming here to hear the myths and monsters" or something like that
Volo seems like a corrupting type of person. Able to corrupt Giratina, the main character, and others around him. He promised to succeed in the future. Maybe Cyrus was corrupted by Volo himself. Maybe similar to N in BW, Volo saw young Cyrus power and decided to plant a seed in the main to seek Palkia, Dialga, and Girarina. Forever in the shadows but never revealing himself. I have no evidence of this but it seems like a cool idea
Volo's hair and clothing also looks a lot like how arceus looks. White, with the gold accents (very specifically shaped as well) and volo's hair is even shaped like how arceus' head is. Is this volo trying to upset arceus, or could it be something else?

I think it's important to mention that Looker, Anabel, and Ingo have ALSO time-space traveled, and I feel a deeper plot is emerging, one that exists beyond the individual game plots
Finally someone does this theory
we all know what volo did with mistress cogita.... ; -]
why when a pokemon when evolving looks different modern-day blue aura shift changing form, past a storm swirl spinning around instead of shift changing in the past, now it's slowing changing. not related to the storm exactly?
what is Volo is an ancestor of Cogita!! from so far ago that nobody in her family remember him?.
I too came to that conclusion.
Ingo also uses 6 when battling him in Jubilife, and while he is from the future, he has little bits of pieces of generalizations from his past.
Yea im pretty sure we are supposed to draw that conclusion when we finally battle him atop spear pillar. It makes sense to me
I came to the same conclusion I also caught the word play Volo is a Pokemon Wielder not a trainer his Pokemon are weapons not partners imagine the kinds damage a wielder could of done to the timeline in the grand scheme of Pokemon "Training" had Arceus not plunked you to show the better path.
"Arceu's discarded child."
The way he talks about it, makes it seem like Volo is projecting on to Giratina in that moment.
*an awful life
*Arceus’ or Arceus’s
@@BriarValley
Well a full team except togekiss and garchomp.
Remember he uses a gabite in an early game encounter as well.
Reminds me of Silver from HGSS.
Would've loved more battles with him throughout the story, went from Togepi and Gible to the Lord of the underworld and 3 phases
Fnf phase be like
I think that may give away that he’s a villain, especially since you tend to fight those types of characters throughout regular pokemon games too
@@friendofjellybean maybe, I can see that. I don't think this game had enough battles in general, one more with Akari and Volo wouldn't hurt much imo, but great point
While I agree, I think if that were the case it would've been more obvious he was the bad guy.
Nah, it would give away the twist
Theory: Ingo was recognized as a strong trainer by Arceus recognized Ingo as a strong trainer, so he was brought to stop Volo from causing chaos, but he was found in the Icelands by the Pearl clan, he then lived with them and became Sneasler's warden. Arceus realized its plan failed, so it sent the protagonist to stop Volo which eventually succeeded.

Actually
Volo again gives us the answers himself:
When explaining his reasoning Volo implies he had a very hard live growing up and then follows this up by calling Giratina "Arecu's discarded child" that's a odd choice of words.
I think she might be the one who suplies him with the "weird machines"
I also think she might be connected to celebie, which is how both theories could even be tied in with eachother.
Cogita does have the Pixie plate after all.
You say cogita having pixie plate prove something despite it being her cutting board , cogita is too much a airhead to be have a complicated role.
YES thank you
@@jyotiarora9988 I don't think you quiet caught what the game was implying here.
@@GamerGeekCentral but au steel becoem in old man will volo is not old so volo most down some thing better then az
@The Akaka I remember seeing this guy in the past, he has some sorta disorder that makes typing difficult
There are I'm afraid some big holes in the details of this theory though, some I noticed:
Because Volo never reverts to an older accent, I doubt he ever had one (and thus, was not from that time)
According to another UA-cam comment I've read, Volo actually speaks in a very unique way in Japanese.
Volo is an amazing villain and I would love to see him return. Maybe a variant of him that succeeded in his goal will appear as a member of Team Rainbow Rocket.
That is horrifying
He could play Giovanni and the other villains like a fiddle lmao
and the only ones that are sus of him are Cyrus and Guzma(and maybe Lusamine if they had let her into their team lol)
For Cyrus, he could read the history books, but for Guzma and Lusamine, it's a gut feeling(because I headcanon that their ancestors are Adaman and Irida for Guzma and Irida and Volo for Lusamine lol)
I mean tbf he basically used Cynthia's team, except for arcanine. So, we can make the inference that Volo is Cynthia's ancestor? not confirmed though.
I'm hoping we get DLC with large amounts of lore, possibly about mythical pokemon who don't have much lore/backstory
I'm so ready for this
@@mco7478 our body is ready
He even protected parts of Japan at some point.

yeah. to be exact, volo and cogita's names also come from philosophical phrases. cogita comes from descartes's famous "cogito ergo sum" (i think therefore i am), while volo comes from the counter phrase "volo ergo sum" (i wish therefore i am). similarly, although cynthia could also fit in the "i think therefore i am" philosophy, her name sounds like sentio, which is used in the phrase "sentio ergo sum" (i feel therefore i am)
@@WintrBorn Cogito is the Japanese name I believe...
Volo is also the italian word for "fly" and "flight".
"Io volo" = "i fly".
Also in the italian version of the game Volo has a different name: Ethelo.
Ethelo is the nintendo variant for the real greek name "Ethel", meaning >
The fact that Volo just got to walk away scott free proves he will be back I wonder if he would be in future titles.
@@erk8520 Also here a better question...why would Volo need to travel to the future for?
@@George_Gogo01 that's the thing with the very slow aging of his blood line. He wouldn't have to travel. He could still be around. But if he did somehow travel in time maybe it was caused by Arceus to cause him to repent. But also seeing as he had giratina he could've somehow got trapped in the distortion world and if you think about it time often works different in stuff like that so he could very well spend as example 24 hours there and it pass 24 years outside if we put quantum realm logic on it. Its the world of Pokemon many different outcomes are highly possible. And none would be shocking.
@@MimiSimps Yeah, but i just think making him a time traveler would be kinda useless compared to making him either immortal or
slow-aging...plus,that would help connect with some other "immortal" like AZ.
True
Worth noting (since Toby seems to have struggled with this): Ginkgo is pronounced as "Ginko". The second g is silent, which makes it way easier to say. It comes from Ginkgo Biloba, a species of tree notable for being particularly ancient and having potent medicinal properties.
Great theory bro, loved getting to put these together :)
Thanks for being part of it man :D
I always thought it was so strange how Cogita and Volo acted like they didn’t know each other despite both being clear Cynthia ancestors!
Right!!!!v
But they clearly do know each other. Cogita comments on Volo like she has a fully formed opinion of him already. They may have only known each other briefly, but that is because Cogita isn't a member of the Ginkgo Guild. She waited for the Ginkgo Guild, the heirs of the Celestica people and the hero of Hisui, to make their return, to play their part in the prophecy she has guarded.
Nothing about this requires Volo to be a time traveler.
@@dvklaveren Yeah but it's still weird that they never directly refer to each other as siblings or family members
@@mrbubbles6468 They already both look exactly alike
This makes so much sense as to why Volo would have spiritomb despite spiritomb existing now. He has spiritomb from hundreds of years ago
This was an excellent theory! Thank you for sharing
Holes in the theory
-When were these poke'ball invented? how would he have these pokemon thousands of years ago if the technology didn't exist?
Also, the Gible line having ties this old to the Sinnoh/Celestica makes for an improved explanation as to why Crawdaunt is in the Celestic Town lake.
the thing with the Arcanine theory is that Volo's Arcanine is female which means she cant be the Lord Arcanine because in the game they use Lord for Male Nobles and Lady for Female Nobles (like Lilligant & Sneasler)
What if she's the partner of the prior Noble and the New Noble Arcanine's mother?
@@k2basior that could definitely be possible
I always figured that Volo had a crush on Cogita. Never really thought of any familial lineage there. Interesting take on that
Well Volo is a researcher so, yeah, researchers can know about the things they research.
7:10 That's a reference to the Gyaoon statues in Gen 1's gyms (which remained Gyaoon-shaped in _both_ remakes for some reason).
i was expecting Volo's betrayal, but it still broke my heart. can i just.. have my sweet and cheerful, history-loving himbo back?
Such an amazing theory! I haven’t finished the game myself but helped my kiddo with hers so the whole time I was thinking “how does Volvo know this when the clans that were there don’t know all this stuff?” Another great theory! ❤️
after the main story volo directly tells us that he has always been fascinated by ancient hisui myth and legend and has dedicated his entire life to figuring it all out (i could say more but i’d rather not spoil exactly what he says)
Lmao finally a parent who appreciates this stuff
Volvo lol
Idk of anyone other than ash that could live for centuries
i miss volo, i stand outside the photography shop to look at his photo with togepi
Volo also said “even if it takes me centuries”
I think it would be cool, if Volo had a kid, and raised it to seek out Arceus, and so on. Meaning, Cynthia has some alternative motives. Would be cool if Cynthia turned out to be evil all this time
Personally I think that those alternative motives were died down
Cynthia couldn't be evil or she'd take giritina in platinum or either the origin duo in bdsp
I like to think after a while volos madness ... Died down in the end. One or two ancestors are bound to think that it's not worth it
You can get Volo’s outfit and its called the “Sinnoh outfit”
What efficiency! No other youtubers i know can release 3 videos in 0.5 seconds! Seriously though good to have you back.
ahaha thnaks :D
I got two hearts back to back from you and Hybridhero! Im winning the internet rn
Volo is the reason Lord Arcanine died? That alone makes him unforgivable.
I see a lot of people saying these characters are all ancestors, but no one's really talking about how they could actually be reincarnations. Volo being reincarnated into Cynthia would be a twist.
Twists like these need evidence in order for them to be considered.
@@justiceiria869 Volo said he would meet Arceus one day, even if it takes him centuries.
This comes full circle when Cynthia meets Arceus in the Sinjoh Ruins event, over a century later.
I mean you can't prove reincarnation but Riley/Rye/Sir Aaron would be good evidence for a reincarnation theory
Please write your theory.
I knew Volo was up to something and not just a merchant, but I got softlocked with the Cresselia bug so I never got that far before seeing this. Glad to see my gut feeling about him was right :)
I just wanna say how good the editing is. The transitions are so sick!
A theory to disprove this theory in one go. He's not a time traveler he just doesn't age.
This is a fun theory and some people are making theories on the comments, I love how pokemon is becoming really interesting for me
Ginkgo trees have symbolism in longevity and endurance.
Man don't be idiot and use the neurone, this is a metaphorical way to say he will be carry on that desire of knowledge to his descendants (Cynthia).
@@LeocaprioDinardo Cynthia isn't trying to kill Arceus, your theory was debunked in seconds.
Really? Even Pokémon isn’t that unrealistic.
Personally, I believe that Sinjoh could actually be a region of it's own. But that is just my take on it.
This was my exact theory as well. I think it makes the most sense and opens up the possibility for future plots.
This theory makes too much sense! Finally, someone puts it out there.
Imagine return of Volo in a futur pokemon game....
Volo: *Time Travels to meet god & inevitably smash Cynthia’s ancestor*
Arceus: Two can play at that game!
Also Arceus: *Isekai’d us*
Given how Cynthia just loves to show up *EVERYWHERE* in the games following her debut, this theory, as ridonkulous as it sounds, doesn't sound too Farfetch'd since Volo is her ancestor.
(I was down to one pokemon when giratina appeared, cause I decided not to revive any of them, not knowing that would happen)
i think volo might of destroyed the ancient citys with his giratina back then, being only some of the few from old sinnoh who survived the attack
Makes sense!
It makes sense when you take into consideration Volo’s outfit at the end and how it is weird that everyone has one ancestor in Hisui but Cynthia appears to have two both Cogita and Volo
This is SUCH a good theory! Can't express enough how good this is. Thanks, Toby! :D
This game has more questions than answers. Insert Sheldon "I don't need sleep, I need answers" memes
what if instead of a "time traveler", he's a "space traveler" from another dimension
glad I’m not the only one who thinks volo isn’t from hissui or whatever just a time traveler
this is an example of one of those videos where its title makes me go 'yea sure..' but then after watching it being absolutely convinced!!!
Awwww yey ^_^
Would still be a good opportunity to see what Giovanni has been up to.... hell he could be watching all of these events unfold in secret.
This is why Volo is my favorite character in all of fiction.
Maybe he’s more immortal somehow than actually a time traveler? He mentions as he leaves that he’ll take as long as it takes to take over the world. Even if it takes centuries. What if he saved Cyrus as a kid and raised him to do what he failed to do in DPP 🤔
not to mention with his arceus based attire in the final battle, Volo's hair style also resembles arceus
I used to watch this channel all the time, but I forgor the name of it (somehow) 💀. I’m so happy I found it again!
I haven't found one yet, but I'll bet if anyone can make one, it's you
Great first video to see of yours. Definitely gonna watch lots more.
Love from America,
Great video Toby. This theory holds a lot of weight
Going by your logic in this theory, shldnt Cogita be the one calling Volo grandpa? And not him calling her grandma?
Looking forward to an updated timeline video lol
My hot take about Volo is that his form of time travel was the slow one; he's immortal, like AZ.
Something I noticed is Volo's ideology, his reveal. It's the same as Cyrus. Whilst Volo is not the ancestor of Cyrus. What Team Galactics more corrupted mind set. Cyrus knows about the red chain. Desired a new unuverse.
This is probably Volo and Cyrus being slowly possessed by Giratina.
Time travel seems enourmously farfetched to me.
The way I see it is that Volo and Cogita are just straightup immortal (or capable of just getting really damn old)
My reasoning steams from two pieces of dialogue:
The first is the one from Volo that you too covered.
Another thing about the word "Celestic", thats what the people of the region are called. Not "humans" but "celestics"
I thought the Shadows Palina was talking about is the Arcanine's ghost, not Giratina.
