not the interior though, i used to have a r230 sl55. the exterior looks nice but the interior didnt age well

I just realized that we made a big fuss because the Hellcat had 700hp. If this SL was still covered by warranty when it came out of Brabus then we should all be thinking that in 2010 people were crazier than now.
Hellcat is much cheaper though, and built in much bigger numbers.
Hellcat costs 80k instead of 160k
but the hellcat is american and the sl is german

The insanity of Brabus... 730bhp, 811 (I assume Nm) of torque, and 219 mph is still impressive today

The epitome of merc longnose coupe design. It is amazing how 1almost 15 years down the line with technology and wind tunnel perversion, this design still remains timeless and gorgeous as it first came out.

Can confirm, I once drove a Brabus tuned SL , and anytime I went near the gas pedal it would just light up the tires. It was great,but not for the Inexperienced for sure.

Not that much faster I mean yes it has 730 hp but it's still an SL Body and at these speeds every mph is exponentially harder to achieve then the last one

I had the chance to drive an SL55 AMG with 517PS which was already really quite insane. I guess the BRABUS SL is just for absolutely disturbed maniacs, far, far away from good or evil.
The standard SL65 Amg in 06 hit a top speed of 209mph (de-limited) It's also the German agreement of limiting their cars to 155mph. Nothing happens at all when you ECU flash the car (more bhp and speed limit removed) You just get more BHP and go faster.
Usually its because of the tyres, most sport tyres are rated for 250km/h. The car can do 300 or even 400 but the tyres would melt you would tune the car to go 350km/h.
This car is a work of art.
Still looks better than most cars made today and every loser pulls up and wants to race when they could hang if you gave em a head start.

This will always be one of my favourite old school Top Gear features, classic Clarkson. Set off my love affair with the R230 SL and C215 CL from this era, all those years ago.

This car is hugely underated, for it's abundance of hooliganism! So sick
Mercedes claimed the top speed of even just the lowly SL55 AMG was over 200mph from the factory. They said the limited top speed of "just 155mph" was necessary due to no manufacturers making & selling 200mph capable DOT approved tires at that time. Not due to any design / engineering lacking or flaws. 200+mph tires did exist back then of course, but were manufactured for racing, and were not DOT approved for street use. This limitation was also true for every other super car sold in the USA during that period. The car itself was indeed designed for that level of speed from the factory, which is another reason why so many tuners gravitated to the R230 platform.

Limiting a car to 218 mph is the most German thing I've ever heard.
The fastest I ever go was in the audi a6 from my uncle. Quaddro 3.0 straight 6 zylinder turbo Diesel. At 173 I stopped accelerating. Holy fuck the trucks seem to drive backwards.

You can see from 6:37 that the rollover protection has slid into place on the rear window. The same thing happened when Vicki drove the SL 55 AMG around Angel Sea. Over protected lol. I'm pretty sure the Stig was surprised when he turned in aggressively in the 1st corner on his power lap.

Saw this car when I played Need For Speed Most Wanted. Bought it as soon as I could and LOVE IT. To this day, I'm not a Mercedes fan but this is still at the top 5 of my favorite cars.

I think he means 1000 torque-per-tonne, as this car is a hell of a lot lighter than a W900, or any semi, for that matter. Also, with 1600 torque, you could kick-start a new galaxy.

I think he means 1000 torques = 1000 ft-lb of torque actually. It's just easier and shorter for him to say "torques" because they have to say it over and over in the show. That is the same unit as a Kenworth W900 with 1600 lb-ft of torque. It makes sense that you would need that much torque in a transport when you're pulling 110,000 lbs from a dead stop, even up a small incline sometimes. But in a lightweight car, it is a lot.
Or 3500 from a Scania 750.

The normal guy my friends dad has an e63 amg 2007 and it was on top gear once
This car is probably what they used as a base setting for the Pagani Huayra. All those numbers sound pretty interesting even according to today's standards.
