It's when you first enter the Grand Church and witness the "service" by Habaruku. It's just a crazy scene full of insanity and brutality that you don't often see in SNES games.
I remember the promos in Street fighter 2 movie almost 25 years ago, when I see a commercial from BOF 2 some time later in a flea market trading a snes games for a copy, the salesman said me "It's a rpg, if you don't like it bring it again" and since then I still have the same game in my collection
Most memorable aspect to me is Sometimes when a character faints, they somehow "grit teeth" and come back with 1 HP. Happened to me while fighting a boss... Very cool
Building a town was the best part for me. Blending the spirit things to create new characters with different powers and looks was great! And the shocked young me when I got a different ending after saving that one guy that time, crazy.
The most memorable part for me is the World Map. Using Jean to get the dragon puppy upgrade and fighting jellies early. The whale entering Upapu(?) cave Spar walking thru dense forests. One of my favorite games of all time. Easily.
Uparupa! Uparupa! For me the best part was the music, and the final boss. Ooof. I remember grinding ages for the money to cook up the mana restoring items (M.Balls or something they were called) so I could spam the Kaiser Dragon ability in his face. Still remember my final party. :') Also the entire sequence starting from Rand's village, all the way till you destroy Evrai. That whole sequence was soo dark and good, I loved it. It's surprising how this game with it's mature themes even got a localization. Probably the bad translation tricked the censors?
The final chapter. The descent into Infinity. The fight with Barubary. The bleak existential monologue from Deathevn. Ryu chasing him down the concourse and slaying him. The final fight with the offspring of the goddess Myria That final act is one of the most epic I've ever seen in any game. The game overall is so dark and mysterious. Also, watching Ryu's attack animation is the most satisfying thing I've ever seen.
The Township and building it was such a joy, 3 different house types all with a different feel and optional ability, the the cook was clearly the best. Honestly the name of the town was a great surprise when it happens. Also, good on you with the 'eyes' boss in the clips. Completely agree with the the best one is such a truly epic moment.
I had a crazy journey with breath of fire 2 it took me a long time beating this game. I really like the story the characters, the soundtrack, the battles and almost everything in the game. I can proudly say its the best game I've played growing up.
Before the final battle where *the demon* says "Burn to ashes, Ryu!" gave me chills as a kid when I FINALLY hit that point after renting it for a year. Such a classic. BoF2 will always have a very special place in my heart.
Really love BoF 2. It doesn't get enough recognition these days, but for me, it was just as absorbing as FF6, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, and Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past. Now that I look back on it, the combat is what I loved the most. Bosses were TOUGH. And beating them felt awesome. The solo fight against Barubary! (chef's kiss) And those fusions! 😍
My favourite part was the entire sequence from Rand's village to the escape from Evrai. Quite a few characters get their development arc in that big story arc: Rand, Nina and Katt. And none of them feel lazy at all. Plus that part is also one of the darkest parts of the overall story and I loved it. Another short part which really stayed with me was the build up to the final boss battle and the battle itself. I played this about 3-4 years ago, and I still remember my final party XD
"What the heck is a back mountain?" Let me help you. Ever heard of a back yard? You know, that plot of land that's behind a building. Now just take that concept and replace yard with mountain and building with town. She went to the back mountain. Now get yer arse back there and save your sister!
@@irritant623 Fair enough, to each his own, but the translation is so bad that it makes playing through the game without a walkthrough challenging at points.
I've always remembered the Shaman fusions. But playing this game was a revelation to me and my family that I have a very strange sleep issue. My eyes don't always fully close when I'm asleep, especially when I when I do so inadvertently
I'm playing 1 before I play 2 again. I still got my og snes and games. Just went to the first dragon temple in 1, while I do have a save in 2 where I haven't saved mina's pet yet
Three is my all time favorite BoF. And I still rank this one on 3rd place. A few reasons. One was that original translation taking away from the story what I thought was just missing. It wasn't until my adulthood that I figured out it was related to the first one at all. Two I didn't like the characters as much as I did in the first. Again that translation. Third was the change to Ryu's dragon transformations. It was so punishing and AP restoration was so hard to come by. Thanks to that translation patch I obtained a greater appreciation for 2. My favorite part was when Nina from the first game appeared to explain that because she fell in love outside the clan she weakened them and thus their wings shrunk and their ability to transform gone. Also it's why they don't have wings in three.
Man, I had the exact same reaction to Ryu's slashing animation. As a kid I would literally invite my friends over just to show it to them. And I always mention it whenever a retro-rpg conversation comes up with my friends!
I remember BoF2 being a really solid game with a pretty dark story. Don't remember it being such an awful translation though, at least nothing game-breaking. Or perhaps I was just too young to notice.
Me too. Only when it was pointed out, I noticed the shoddy translation. But the story is so good, plus my young amazed self easily filled in the blanks with my imagination, that I didn't notice the fact that the game was doing a poor job with the text.
Breath of Fire II was my real RPG experience before getting into the Final Fantasy Franchise. Even though my first two RPG experiences were Secret Of Mana and Super Mario RPG... I was familiar with the Genre, but I didn't know what an RPG was or what it stood for.
I never finished the game. Hit a wall where I had under-leveled Rand back in the day and there was a section you had to use him, so u kept getting wrecked lol I really do need to try again, because I loved it right up until that point. Also thought the town building stuff was really interesting.
I’m stoked you made a breath of fire video, I stopped what I was doing to watch this. You have to be a fan of the music it’s one of my favorite parts. I hope you do a breath of fire 3 video that’s the best one. I am baffled that 2 is your favorite one over 3!!! That is a conversation I’d like to have
As usual, with this video you have once again not failed to please. Stellar content my friend. I have great memories of playing this game although I never beat it since it was stolen from me 😢 I see this video was uploaded last year and I hope that does not discourage you from replying to my post. Anyway I am curious; in this video you say that Breath of Fire 2 stands out from "typical RPGs" and I was just wondering if you could please give some examples of what you consider to be a "typical RPG" and what makes them "typical". Also in your opinion is " typical" necessarily bad? Thanks for the video and keep up the great work!
Considering the subject matter of Breath of Fire II and the way Nintendo censored games Stateside it's a miracle we ever got Breath if Fire II in the first place. I'm glad we did though as it's one of my favorite SNES games, and my favorite of the Breath of Fire series, the random battles in the game are excessive and the game does a poor job of explaining how to mitigate them, but if you can power through that it's a great experience. I always enjoying shattering the game to pieces after unlocking Grandpa the Whale, and finding Bleu
The build up towards the ending is amazing. Having all of those character moments of growth throughout the whole game, and then.... *Spoiler Warning* ... ... Having the elder make you choose one of your friends to sacrifice to obtain the ultimate power...only for every choice to be wrong, unless you refuse the power instead of sacrificing someone. And then, you reach the final boss, and he straight up murders your three companions. Followed by Ryu's grief and rage. Just amazing.
It's good to see the hard work put into the re-translations by fans, but why do they always insist on completely changing up the font and window style?
I've owned Earth Bound twice, and in all my years I had never even gotten the chance to rent that game. Bad luck I suppose, but emulation of it was a blast, never got much further than the "Bottle fly" or however you spell it but the kingdom with the big dopy frog prince.

For people who've played it over and over, this game is great to re-visit (with a better translation). For people playing it blind, it's a living nightmare. I would put it up as being one of the worst first experiences I've had in a RPG. Granted, since then, I've played much worse games but overall I hated my first run of this game. Is it a great rpg? Not as good as some of the other BoF but it's okay. Most memorable part is doing all the wrong things the first time to destroy my whole experience. It's been fine for every other playthrough because getting and doing the right things is key to a more enjoyable experience.
Lol, what was your biggest blind walkthrough mistakes? Mine, was NOT finding flying township, Bleu, the emperor sword, the final fishing rod, maniro sold equipment, cooking good stuff in township, giant Island and optimal tenants... Most memorable aspect to me is Sometimes when a character faints, they somehow "grit teeth" and come back with 1 HP. Happened to me while fighting a boss... Very cool
That is actually based on a character stat called Guts, represented by flames.
what i liked most was the combination system that lets you play as and advanced version of the character.
Building a town was the best part for me. Blending the spirit things to create new characters with different powers and looks was great! And the shocked young me when I got a different ending after saving that one guy that time, crazy.

This game was so far ahead of its time...I have no idea how they were able to sneak its plot past Nintendo's censors at the time.
Probably because the localization made so much of it incomprehensible haha.

The part that really stands out for me is when you save the Big Wise Tree from a nightmare.
