Last time I talked about Breath of Fire, a game that needs no introduction. But in case you do, click here to check that video out first. If you don’t have time for that, here’s a quick recap: Breath of Fire marked Capcom’s first entry into the RPG market. It was an RPG for beginners, by beginners. They made some rookie mistakes that were easily forgiven, and fans wanted more. Lucky for us, we got more.
When Breath of Fire was released in the US, the development of Breath of Fire 2 was already well underway, and Capcom, now wiser and more experienced was catching their stride. Capcom learned from their mistakes in Breath of Fire, and somehow, within a year, unleashed upon the world what some consider to be the best entry in the series. But is it?
I am Super Derek, and this is Breath of Fire 2!
Breath of Fire 2 takes place 500 years after the events of Breath of Fire 1, and once again the fate of the world is in peril. Once again a hero from the Dragon Clan must rise to the challenge. And once again, we are invited into the world of Breath of Fire.
There are a lot of similarities and throwbacks to the original Breath of Fire. Some of these similarities, such as the names and clans of our heroes Ryu and Nina became series staples. Names and themes of towns and their locations make a return from the original game, making everything feel very familiar. But the world isn’t just reused from Breath of Fire, it’s been revamped, and feels much more fully fleshed out. In a way, Breath of Fire 2 feels like a love letter from Capcom to the fans of Breath of Fire 1, and it really, really works.

THIS GAME! I WAS LOOKING FOR THE NAME FOR 10 WHOLE YEARS!
As a kid, I chanced upon this game in a GBA multicart I had back then and was charmed on the spot, but I never remembered the name, except that it had Fire in its name. Who knew, 10 years down the road, I finally found it! Huzzah!
    This is a glorious day!

BoF II really struck me when I played it. The translation could be pretty lousy at times, but I think it says something about the game if the story and atmosphere come through regardless, and they came through in spades. I guess it was the religious aspect that got to me; the organ music, the candles, the priests. And that intro boss? Enigmatic and foreboding. Final Fantasy Tactics had a similar theme to its story, but I was never amazed by it, simply because I played this one first.
Then those endings. Damn, they had a pretty powerful bad end.
On a minor note, the most gorgeous Nina in the series, and some great mechanics in town building and character combining.

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  10 років тому +1

Yeah, BoF 2 was a load of fun man! By the way, did you see those scan lines? It's like a (very) poor-man's frame-meister! Speaking of which, how's that working out?

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews 10 років тому

Super Derek I'm not going to lie, those scan lines look awesome in 480p, but in 720, they seem spaced out too far. The lower resolution and the crt looking border makes em look really authentic.

Well, it did have it's fair share of competition:Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, etc. But like Derek and others, I played the living hell out of this game during my younger years, and the story for this game completely won my heart!

  • @erika_fuzzbottom
    @erika_fuzzbottom 8 років тому +19

This wasn't as in-depth as I would've hoped for. Even though you mentioned transformations, you didn't mention the main character's ability to turn into/summon dragons, which was actually a big selling point for me.
While I prefer BoF2 for the most part, I feel like BoF1 handled the dragon transformations better. In BoF1, Ryu could turn into various dragons for the duration of the fight, which was cool. In BoF2, they were more like one-time summons, which wasn't nearly as cool. But BoF2 at least somewhat makes up for it with the ability to combine characters.
You also didn't at all mention the town-building mechanic. Partway through the game, you decide to help an old man build a town. Depending on which townfolk you recruit, you could wind up with a few different types of towns.

+Draygone RPGMmag You're entirely right. I really should have touched on those things with this review. I think that at some point I'll play through the fan re-translation, and when I do I'll be sure to address these things. :)

  • @livnatkris

I think the game should get a big credit for being created by a company that never handled RPG before (aside of Breath of Fire 1). Also the story was so enchanting, and all the chars loveable, unlike other Snes RPG games of that time, that I never found myself too connected with. The story and the music is great and is filled with it's own magic. I finished the game about five times, and this is the only Snes RPG game I ever played so much, which means a lot about it. I think you are very objective, but it feels like your review was missing a lot of key points. I need to see your other videos to see if you give other games the same treatment. I say it is a decent review, but not very full of depth, which is a shame. I really think it's one of few games that made that made me fall in love with the RPG genre as I only started looking for more RPG after playing this one, yet no other SNES RPG made me fall so in love, expect maybe "Treasure of Rudra" or "tales of Phantasia"
Another important note is that the game was recently re-translated, and I gotta say, that it adds a lot to it.
Thank you for taking the time to do the review, I'm glad this game was given a look on! I shall watch your other videos too :)

This game made me start playing rpg games too. I remember renting this for almost a week and then I got a glitch on my save file and I couldn´t finish it, only years later with the help of emulators. Later I finished it too like 3 or 4 times and I´m still expecting a remake of this like they did with final fantasy 3, it would be great.

I’d love to see a series where you redo some of these earlier reviews with mentions on how to play nowadays (SNES, NSO, SNES Mini, emulation…) I’ve spent the past year replaying NES/SNES JRPG staples and would love your thoughts contextualizing each game within its era… how they were influenced by other games, and what games influenced them!

there's a certain Boss in BOF3 that has a different color if play'd the US or EU version.
BOF 1&2 originally a SuperNES / remakes on the GBA
BOF 3&4 originally on the PS1.

I first played this game on the Wii U Virtual Console. I never really knew anything about the Breath of Fire series before and I just decided to jump in and try it out. I absolutely loved this game! The story, the music, the battles, the random surprising things that would happen, I almost felt as if I was truly going on an adventure some place far away from home at times. One of the best games I've ever had the pleasure to play. By the way, if you never have, you should try the Golden Sun games. The Golden Sun series is my favorite RPG franchise, but Breath of Fire 2 came super close. Great review.

JRPGs do take some time to play through, but truthfully, the reason this particular review took so long was because I kind of sort of played through Fallout New Vegas and Skyrim... twice.

I also grew up with 1 and 3. 2 was a lot of fun, but I gotta say that some parts just really dragged, and I just couldn't bring myself to like some of the characters (I'm looking at you, Jean!). If the translation wasn't what it was, BoF2 would be one of the best RPGs on the SNES. In my opinion it still is, but that translation is rough. Luckily there is a fan translation for the SNES version you can use. The GBA version not changing the translation is a tragedy although they did fix the encounter rate.

I consider BoF 3 the best in the series, with BoF 2 being a close, close second. Then its Breath of Fire 4, which had some very nice steps forward and a few back, but overall was a fun, challenging and memorable experience. Then BoF 1, which was hugely ambitious for a first attempt at an RPG on the SNES, its just that the next games were such huge qualitative leaps. Dragon Quarter is on the last place, since it had lots of potentially interesting ideas, but where never explored with enough time to develop them.

Of course I respect everyone's opinion but I'm really surprised how many people prefer the first game. I just recently beat it and I was exhausted by how simplistic that game was. 90% of battles I beat by using the auto battle option since a lot of characters can't really do more than attacking (and transforming, which costs MP). The whole thing was super easy and the characters didn't have much of a personality. The second one however instantly offers more possibilities, the characters feel more alive and even bosses are more interesting.
In my mind BoF 1 feels like an NES JRPG while BoF 2 feels like a proper SNES JRPG. No offense, though. That's just how I feel.

Most of my problems with this game came with the history progression and the grinding. Although my main issue with grinding wasn't for experience, but for money. Everything was far too expensive, and enemies left virtually no cah, and seeing as the game sometimes forces in some parts to stick with certain characters (or fighting with just one of them), having to equip everyone with good equipment felt exhausting most of the time.
And for the history progression, Im like 30 hrs into the game (maybe I took longer than other people) and I still don't "know" (in the game) the reason of why stuff is happening, and half of that time was just to get Bo back with me (proving him innocent), to me it seems like Im just exploring with world but with no real porpuse, like fetch quest after fetch quest but nothing to fetch.
Maybe it's on porpuse but I still don't feel safe to buy most use items (revive stuff or whatever) because it's expensive and I need to save it for better equipment.
Another problem was the assignment of magic to the party. None of them feel like a "type" of character (say: healer, attack magic, etc). Nina now has attack magic but doesn't heal, while Bo having little mp gets DefUpX and CuraX and on the other hand Sten doesn't hit that hard and has poor magic.
It all just felt disorganized to me, because I never could figure out how to manage my party.
Graphics and animations are gorgeous tho, the world is big and expansive, there's a lot of new cool stuff and gimmicks that work well (growing your town and searching people is neat).
Im liking it but I don't feel as satisfied playing it as with Breath of Fire 1

BoF2 was the first game I ever played in the BoF series and, you guessed it, I played it on the SNES. It was the game that developed my love for the series. My only gripe with this game and the series as a whole is the enemy encounter rate. It was truly brutal. No lie, I seen times I'd take a few steps and would go into battle. It was something that had me pulling my hair out. Yet, I loved it. I eventually got this game for the GBA but it wasn't much better in that respect. While it isn't my most favorite game out of the series, it is the one I most highly recommend. It is a series that I wish Capcom would bring back but do it like the first four games.

I recently got a chance to play Breath of Fire II, so far it's good. On another note. I'll tell you a story about my experience with Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter:
When I first played it, I was so put off by the battle system and difficulty of this survival RPG, I made it an hour or two into it probably just a few feet away from the area where Ryu transforms into Dragon mode. I put the game down for a year... Casually, I decided to pick it up again and give it a second chance, I ended up loving the game and the challenge it brought. I made it about 75% of the way through the game my first true attempt and it was so exhilarating when you know you only have one or two healing items left and you have to tread through many rooms filled with monsters hoping you don't get surprise attacked or otherwise trying to take them out via an initiative. I get why a fair share of gamers are put off by it but it truly deserves a better chance. Nowadays people like games like Dark Souls 2 that are masochistic, due to this change in perseptions, I feel like gamers should revisit some older games with some real challenge like Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter (PS2).
What are your thoughts on Dragon Quarter? (to anyone, + Super Derek)

I loved this sequel. Despite the translation not being the best, I still enjoyed the story and especially the characters. I can understand your nostalgia for the first game, but I did like this one better. Either way, both awesome SNES RPG's. I still need to get both for my own collection. Sadly, my Game Collection isn't quite as robust as yours. :P Hahaha.

It's a bit disappointing that you didn't mention the retranslation from the german patch as it's seen by many as the definitive version of the game. This game felt like an attempt to re-do BoF1 with a better plot. I found the first game as boring as you found Lufia, but really enjoyed this one. Not as much as BoF3 but maybe that's just because i played that before i played this - nostalgia makes it a tricky question as you say.
I suspect there are better fan translations available now
The tracks in BoF1 were better than those in 2, but the music was used better in 2

unassumption BoF 2 has a fan translation that's worlds better, and has some other minor improvements (nothing game or balance changing). It even adds in the run button.
The first doesn't get one, but there is a patch out there for the GBA version that corrects certain text and word names to be more clear with the rest of the series.

After playing this game like 2 years ago, and putting it aside because of time, I finally finished it a couple days ago, and i can say I really enjoyed a lot, sometimes one gets a little bit lost wandering around wondering where to go next, that's indeed because of the translation, and encounter rate is a normal one for a game of its time, however at the last dungeon, the encounter rate is REALLY high, all this game needs is patience, its a very good classic RPG game worth playing, the translation patch for it improves a lot the original translation.
Actually as I finally could finish the game and liekd it so much, I did myself a video about it:ua-cam.com/video/Swjnr8KN0Hw/v-deo.html
The game imo was very underrated, which is a shame since it has a lot to offer.

There's nary a single track from the original BoF that I don't love. Comparatively, BoF II has a lot of tracks that grate on the ears-as you said, though, it often did a better job of tailoring its music to suit the game's edgy atmosphere, scene by scene.

I don't really think BoF 2 is better than its predecessor. Yes, the story is better overall, but the characters, the map and the towns are just not as charming. The encounter rate and the grinding required for this game are higher than BoF 1, hurting its pacing quite a bit. Besides, Ryu's dragon transformations are just prettier spells for a one time use on battle, and the shaman fusions, while very creative in design, don't give the expected boost for the characters and are not as plentiful as they cold have been. Also, they are just undone when the character gets low on HP... Like wtf
There are also some other questionable decisions such as 1-) removing items like Marbl3 - which helped quite a lot on BoF 1 -, 2-) making the run option for the battles almost useless as it doesn't seem to work like 90% of the time (maybe the developers knew that the player would need every single battle to grind), and 3-) unbalanced characters. All of this along with the bad translation and some problems from BoF 1 that weren't fixed (such as the lack of some basic battle options, easy menu navigation and item management, etc.) makes some parts of the game a chore to go through.
Despite all this I like this game and the series as a whole very much. Its certainly a game that deserves a remake, but unfortunately we may never see it happen.

breath of fire 2 is the best of BOF series. You are quite underrating this one I dislike this video for that, I'm sorry, BOF 2 story is so epic and tragic, I always be insensitive person for movie and game but there's moment in BOF that really touch me so deeply, multiple possible ending include bad ending, some of the quest is so beautiful and surrealist, you venture in this huge and variety world and culture and you really feel yourselves as an Odysseus in the world of BOF. It is simply Tim Burton on snes. And it has the best Nina. The only downside of it is the romance.
