Bob knew what he was doing. He was pushing Kirk to play a really heart-wrenching, bluesy, emotionally intense solo. This is what a great producer does. It took literally pushing Kirk near the brink to bring this badass solo out of him, much like it might happen with an actor and an especially dramatic scene.
The interesting part about this is Kirk felt really backed into a corner on this. He was so nervous and he felt like the only way to get it to stop was to play this solo. And he nailed it. Most people couldn't perform at all in that situation. He performed at the highest level.

The first bend is what set him up to write this whole solo. Once he figured out thats where he wanted to start, the rest probably came "fairly" easy. It sets the entire mood/emotion he was going for. Sad But True also starts with a nasty bend and its one of my favorite solos as well.
Geez, that final distorted wailing note that he vibrates into a fade is so gorgeous a tone it makes my eyes brim with tears hearing it so clearly like this. That amalgamation of sounds and notes makes for such a nostalgic and regret filled haunting echo…so powerful…
This is exactly what a prestige music producer does. This video is a testament for how a producer can push an artist and coax out of them things they didn't even know they had in them. It's the producer's job to try and develop the artist's full creative potential-to make the song the best it can be
It just shows what a good producer BR is. This take isn't the final take, but it was a great first attempt at it. I'd love to see the process they went through to get that final take that's on the record.

There's a reason that this album is just as strong today as it was 32 years ago and in 32 years it will still be strong. He showed them the value of having a producer.
