    I love one of the comments on Voiceplay's original video, it says, "if your voice is low and rattles nearby objects you are a bass. But if your voice is so low that your friends ask you to stand in for a Viking War Horn.... You're Geoff Castellucci.

Also, “Queen in 5 minutes” is beyond amazing. Queen and Freddie Mercy would be so proud of the job they did with that one. This is going to be a great adventure for you! I can’t wait to see it!!! • @Tryst46
      @Tryst46 2 роки тому +4

      It does help that Layne co-owns a film studio (Pattycake Productions). Eli does lighting, I presume he's an electrician, Layne and Geoff take it in turns to edit the video and audio, although Layne has said that the audio goes to a professional for the final tweaks.

  • @dracorn8558
    @dracorn8558 2 роки тому +31

    He he he... LOVED your reaction! You have been slapped in the face by Geoff Castelluci! He routinely hits the bottom of the keyboard. He also arranged My Mother Told Me. Voiceplay are the "theater kids" of acapella - frequently dressing in costume and acting out the roles.
    From left to right: Geoff Castelluci (base - obviously, pronounced Jeff), Eli Jacobson (pronounced El-ee: tenor), Jose Rosario (guest singer), J None (who left the group: baritone) and Layne Stein (beatboxer, also arranges). The newest member is Cesar De La Rosa in other videos.
    Recommendations: Hoist the Colours (my favorite), Oogie Boogie Song, Dragonborn Comes, Halo, Carry on My Wayward Son, Little Mermaid Medley.
    Geoff also has his own channel (base solos!): Sixteen Tons, House of the Rising Son, Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold, Headless Horsemen, Monster Mash, to name a few.
    Have fun tumbling down the rabbit hole!

      I wibble wobble between VoicePlay and Pentatonix. Home Free has high talent but I'm not much into Country so I just barely ever click on one of theirs. The last several of VPs, in full costume and location, have been MIND-ALTERING. But I found PTX before I ever heard VoicePlay, and I'm a serious Pentaholic, too. There is no "better." They both rank at #1 to me.
      I have seen the video when HomeFree and VoicePlay got together in a tussle (zombies vs. hillbillies? LOL) and MAN, I wish they would do something similar with PTX. PTX doesn't do as much of the costume thing, but they have a few (Making Christmas, My Favorite Things, Love Again, etc.) And a showdown between Layne and Kevin would be so ... argh. Words fail. Ooh - if they re-used the set from "GUY.EXE" they could do something ... intriguing.

    A lot of us have wondered why Disney hasn't asked Geoff to do a villain. Actually, in a recent chat for patrons, he said that he always thought he wanted to be a sidekick, because they are often more funny and interesting. If you follow up with Voiceplay and his solo work, you will definitely see times when he channels his own personal 'bass hero' Thurl Ravenscroft, who voiced many things for Disney and is the one singing "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" in the original TV Christmas animated version from 1966.

    To see the range of their talent, check out We Don't Talk About Bruno, also current lineup plus featured artist.
    Geoff is amazing, but all of them are extremely talented. Voiceplay arrangements are usually done Geoff or Layne Stein the beatboxer, about half and half. Eli (rhymes with jelly) Jacobson, the bald tenor, does their lighting and special effects and designed the set for this one. The black baritone left last year to join the US Navy and sing with them.

    What you haven't heard yet is just how *high* that bass can go. Meet Geoff Castellucci, amazing bass vocalist, possibly an alien, definitely talented beyond reason. His voice spans 5 octaves, his vocal control and flexibility is ridiculous, and did anyone mention that he arranges half of VoicePlay's music? He shares the duty with Layne Stein (the beatboxer), and occasionally Eli (rhymes with 'jelly') Jacobson, the bald tenor in this video. Geoff also has a solo channel where he does cover songs, with his multitracked vocals handling all the vocal lines from tenor down to abyssal bass. You really have to hear those to grasp how phenomenal this man's range truly is.
    VoicePlay's lineup gets confusing because there have been several changes in permanent members since they began uploading to UA-cam, as well as featuring a large number of other vocalists. The members you will always see are the three I've previously mentioned- Geoff, Layne and Eli. When their oldest videos, they were joined by high tenor Earl Elkins Jr. and baritone Tony Wakim. After Tony left, he was replaced by J. None, who is the black baritone in this video. Earl left mid-2020, and hasn't yet been replaced (instead, VoicePlay feature other artists to round out their number). J. None left in 2021 to join the US Navy, and was replaced by Cesar De La Rosa (baritone/tenor). One of their most often featured artists is Rachel Potter (to the point that she's considered an unofficial member of the group).

I like Carry On Wayward Son, Queen in 5 minutes, and later, Hoist the Colours and The Dragonborn comes from Skyrim.. They also have a quirky funny side - try Moana Medley or We don't tak About Bruno. The bass, Geof Castelluci has his own channel and talks about how to do subharmonics, there. He has some absolutely beautiful solo stuff, like The Beatles' Blackbird. He and Layne, the beatboxer arrange a lot of their music.

    As a suggestion... I'd suggest you to watch either Halo Theme (INCLUDING the second half of the video... It provides the why's of that one AND a window into who these guys are on their human side), or The Dragonborn Comes (from the videogame Skyrim which I believe you know), or Hoist the Colours (from Pirates of the Caribbean III), or the "trinity" from Nightmare Before Christmas: "This is Halloween", "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" and "Boogie Boogie Song". But I'd also like to suggest you to check "that man", whose name is Geoff Castellucci, own channel, where he does some "low bass covers" that will blow your mind... Also because he plays 4 or 5 singing parts, harmonising with himself and covering about 5 octaves range 😁. I'd suggest to start with "Far over the Misty Mountains cold", or any one among his "non-halloween" stuff: High and dry, Blackbird, Shenandoah, Sixteen tons (and its "twin" Big Bad John), God rest ye merry gentlemen... You choose. 🙂

    VoicePlay competed with Home Free in Season 4 of the SingOff. When Home Free won they went on a USA SingOff tour. VoicePlay was invited to join them along with another group, Filharmonic that worked well with them. Several Home Free members have appeared as guests on VoicePlay's channel and Layne and Geoff have assisted Home Free with arrangements on a couple of their videos. Recommend Dragonborn Comes, Halo Theme, Hoist the Colors, and pretty much anything else they do.
    Geoff sounds Iike a Gjallarhorn (Old Norse “Resounding Horn”). It is one of the most prized treasures of the gods. Heimdall, the gods’ ever-vigilant sentry, keeps watch over their celestial stronghold Asgard day and night with the Gjallarhorn in his hand. During Ragnarok, the final battle in which the cosmos will be destroyed, the giants will march upon Asgard. When Heimdall spots them heading for the gods’ sanctuary, he will let out such a huge blast from the Gjallarhorn that it will be heard throughout all the cosmos. Then all of the gods - and, indeed, all living beings - will know that their doom has arrived.

    This video was also my introduction to VoicePlay and I was instantly smitten. Geoff (Jeff) Castellucci is the bass singer's name and he has a 5 octave range. In addition to singing with VP and sometimes working with members of PTX and Home Free he has several "solo" numbers out there. Does it count as solo if there are four of him, five in the case of Take Me Home, Country Roads? Check out Sixteen Tons, House of the Rising Sun, Monster Mash, and his latest Big Bad John. Be prepared for your headphones to vibrate and your wall to shake. As to the group, there have been several line-up changes, so you're going to see different faces in other videos. When you watch the HALO Theme please keep watching after the song is over. Then go to Boy Bands in 5 Minutes; the big guy who hands off the sandwich at the flaming barrel is the one mentioned. You're going to get a long of different song to react to from others so I'm gonna name some older ones that I don't usually see mentioned. The Phantom of the Opera and Attention are great. ACA Top 10 Movie Themes with HF's Rob Lundquist. Road Trip, The Fox, Wookiee for Christmas, and The Chicken Song are all hilarious. And when you check out Just Song make sure your CC is on for the important subtitles. Enjoy! And welcome to the madhouse rabbit hole that is VP fandom.

PTX is considered the Kings and Queen of the prom, Home Free are the guys throwing a tailgate party in the parking lot and Voiceplay is the theatrical group. Don't think that is the only tunnels running from that rabbit hole you jumped down, it turns into a warren pretty quick. Between other groups and the collabs, not to mention their own channels a projects, you have tons of music and info coming your way. For all intents and purposes you can just throw a dart hit play and the music will always be fantastic.

With VoicePlay everything you see is them. They plan the videos, do the rough cut on vocals and finish edit on videos, and most things in between.

  • @DougRayPhillips

    Voiceplay (originally called 42Five) started around 2005. Like the other two acapella groups you've been watching, there's a core of about 3 people in each group that's been performing together since high school. Which apparently means that being world-class performers is less about native ability and more about putting in the hard work.
    Voiceplay's core was bass Geoff Castellucci, baritone Layne Stein, and high tenor Earl Elkins. Scott Porter was a part of the group at one time, but he left to pursue an acting career. Rather than recruit a new beatboxer, Layne switched to beatboxing and they recruited a new baritone.
    Pentatonix won The Sing-Off, season 3. Home Free won the show in season 4, and Voiceplay finished fifth that year. But HF and VP became and remained friends. The exposure got VP greater recognition. And Tim Foust helped Geoff develop his bass techniques.
    When VP competed on The Sing-Off, the group consisted of Earl, Geoff, Layne, 2nd tenor Eli Jacobson, baritone Tony Wakim, and recent addition female lead singer Honey Larochelle who had also gone to high school with the core trio. That's who you'll see in their oldest UA-cam vids. But by 2015, they were back to just the five guys.
    Tony left in 2016. After a search of a year and 3 months, JNone joined them in 2017. That lineup was stable until 2020, and is what you see in most of their older vids.
    Earl left in 2020. JNone left in 2021. Between that, and COVID interfering with touring, they're concentrating on very theatrical vids, and they have six or eight guest artists (some male, some female) who show up in their vids repeatedly. They've added Cesar De La Rosa as a permanent member and classified him as a tenor/baritone. So, I don't know if they're still looking for another permanent member or if they're just going to go with the four plus keep doing the rotating guest thing for now.
    Also starting with COVID in 2020, Geoff is putting solo vids up on his own YT channel. He has maybe 15 or 20 so far. Almost all of them are just his own voice, multitracked. Be prepared. Well, you can't really be prepared. And he has some vids describing how he developed his growl, fry and subharmonic techniques.
    On VP's "Halo" vid, Scott Porter comes back as a special guest. Be sure to watch his commentary after the music. It's a tribute thing. Also, you'll hear Geoff do a B0 note. That's the second-lowest white key on a standard piano.

  • @Blue-rl5dp

    Voiceplay does mostly theatrical sort of stuff. They're very much into music that goes with plays and stage performances. Geoff Castalucci (Jeff Casta-loo-chee) is their bass, possibly the lowest in the current au capella scene on UA-cam. They frequently have guest singers so their group comes and goes a lot in members and numbers.
