Amazing tutotrial, thank you! Just a small tip: as you mentioned, when retiming an audio clip it gets distorted. That is because by default FCPX will remain the pitch. You can change that in the retiming menu. Especially for slow motion sound design thats incredibly usefull.
Oh wow, I had no idea....big ups!! Thanks for passing along that piece of info 🤙🏼
I hope you enjoyed the tutorial! Press the 👍 button when you get the chance, and let me know what new sound design tip or tips you learned from the video. I always look forward to chatting.

This was SO awesome to read my friend. Thank you for taking the time to give me feedback not only here, but on a few of my other videos. I truly appreciate it. May I ask, how did you come across my channel in the first place? Was a specific video suggested to you?
@@dylanjohndickerson my pleasure! I also coach/guide, so I understand the value of feedback. I was searching for sound design. You were right there in the results. Top 5 or so I believe. And now after I made those few engagements, you’re being suggested to me. Keep it up! And I’ll be putting my face on my account soon. I prefer that over symbols. Lol
@@realadamkasix Ahhh I'm glad this video was suggested to you. It's one of my favorites. I'll definitely have to create some more tutorials on sound design because that seems to be a topic people enjoy. Thanks so much for the support my friend! Holly Jef! this is exactly what I was looking for. Awesome work!
Awesome 😊 Thanks for watching, Raphael!
So much good info! thanks! one trick I use with reverb is at the end of the audio clip I put a hold (shift+H) then add a reverb effect. Key frame the strength of the reverb accordingly to your taste.
My pleasure Gerald! Ah that's a great idea! Usually I use a gap clip and then make it a compound clip, but that's definitely easier! Thanks for the tip 👊🏼
I've just finished and uploaded my first FCP edited video to YT. I thought my sound was really good. NOW... having watched this...My audio will take a giant leap forward. This tutorial is a game changer for me. Can't thank you enough!

Sick! Glad you liked it 😊
Jaw dropping info.. lol.. @10:30 makes so much more sense to keyframe ambiance sounds. Never knew these tips. TY for your help
This stuff really helps man! Glad I could teach you some things 👊🏼
I just want to say that this video is amazing and extremely helpful! I am an aspiring composer and I have recently found a new passion for the more bizarre side of music with found sound, sound design based on nature sounds, and just stacking and layering everyday sounds to pair with visuals. UA-cam suggested this video to me and I must say, I’ve already played it twice because I never knew there was so much one could do with audio in Finalcut, it’s almost like a DAW in itself! I’m going to be following along to this tutorial step by step and probably creating dozens of projects just with what I learned in this one video for months on end. Thanks for breaking it down to make it understandable for a complete beginner in editing!
That makes me ecstatic to hear my friend! I put a lot of time into this one, so it’s awesome to hear that it’s appreciated ☺️. Let me know if you have any questions when you start editing 👊🏼
@@dylanjohndickerson Awesome, well the clear amount of work and dedication definitely shines through!

That was great. The 18 minutes flew by. Really nicely put together video. Very interesting too : )
Ah that's seriously great to hear. It's my longest tutorial by far and I was wondering if I made it too lengthy for people's likings. I was going to make it longer actually haha. Thanks for the feedback PJ

Dylan! Congrats on 10k by the way.. I had to revisit this tutorial because it was so darn good. I need to spend more on sound design and less on masking lol. Damn Sam Kolder
Yo Tony! Thanks man! 🙏🏼 haha agreed. Masking can offer some cool options for transitions, but sound design can hands down transform your video.
This was very helpful, Dylan. Thank you.
You're welcome, amigo! Thanks for watching.

ARGH! This is the tutorial I need! Just finishing my first film. Or rather, I THOUGHT I was close to finishing... will be studying this numerous times!
Well then sounds like it'll come in handy for the next one! Glad you enjoy it 🤙🏼
@@dylanjohndickerson so.... I'm ASSUMING I should provide all the sounds (film set in Uganda, and I want to use bird song/animal sounds to inflect MOOD-I've done some, but see it could be much more), and then hand it to a pro to make it much better?? Like the difference in your clip of woman running down the hallway, wow, the difference is HUGE. (I'm a pro photog with 6 books. Back in 2016 I thought I'd try something easier like a film. Hahahaha!) I began editing from scratch 3 years ago, with someone giving story feedback weekly. So now I'm like, NOW WHAT to finish it off????
This video helped a ton, thanks bro!
My pleasure brotha! 👊 Thanks for watching and letting me know you enjoyed it.

Excellent tutorial.

I feel the effort, so I've subscribed ❤
Thanks so much for subbing! 🙏🏼
Love all your tutorials and have learned much - thank you, Dylan! Haven't finished watching this one yet, but I'm assuming your suggestion to listen with headphones is in order to appreciate the subtle effects you'll be demonstrating. My experience with editing while wearing headphones is that the resulting sound is not ideal for playback on a laptop, which is how most of our viewers see our videos. I'll be curious to learn what your experience has been and how a filmmaker can optimize audio for the best result in real-world environments. Keep up the great work...!
Thanks so much, Steve! Even if the viewer doesn’t use headphones when watching the video, I still enjoy creating with them because I know there are a few people who do watch videos with good speakers/headphones.
Very good. Thank you.
Thanks for watching, Leena!
One of the best tutorials on sound design for FCPX - This video should have 10-50x the views at least. Phenomenal!
That means a lot Federico 🙏 Thank you so much! I definitely put some work into this one, so I'm glad it shows.
