I had a friend who was a personal assistant to a powerful man. One day her boss was following a colleague's car with his own when the colleague got into a car accident. He called my friend, his assistant, and yelled, "Bob's been in an accident! Call the police!" and she said, "YOU call the police! You're the one who's THERE!" He was stunned silent by the suggestion for a good few seconds. He was so used to telling her to do things for him, the idea of doing it himself was foreign.

Sadly I think you are on point with this story. She maybe was so used to getting helped out that when she panicked her natural reaction was to call for help. Also if she was drunk, I've stopped friends from drunk driving on holiday myself - they almost crashed us for good while getting groceries. I think that mindset just begs for accidents. The moment you feel safe being drunk in front of the wheel is always cheesy as hell, right? Life just doesn't care about the holiday swag.

You think someone like her can actually do that? She was pampered her entire life. A far leftist from New York and San Fran, and she moved to Texas bringing her leftist politics. She only ran to Texas because NYC and SF shut down during the pandemic so she ran to a Red state. Angela, from what I've read, was also a Chine Communist sympathizer too. Her and her circles are the ones who are trying to tell us to eat bugs and not cows so the planet could be saved. Only if she can save herself from her stupidity.

      YUP👇👇
Chao, 50, died Feb. 10 after having dinner with seven of her close friends on her 4,500-acre ranch in Johnson City, west of Austin. The group had gathered for a "girl's weekend" at the property, which is home to multiple stock ponds, dwellings and out buildings, the police report said.
Chao had invited seven friends to the ranch for a weekend getaway, according to the report. They had attended a Pitbull concert in Austin the night before.
The Blanco County Sheriff's Office ruled Chao's death an "unfortunate accident," according to a report on the investigation released Wednesday. An autopsy was not performed on Chao, but a toxicology test revealed her blood alcohol concentration level was nearly three times the legal limit in Texas, the report said.
"The toxicology results indicated Chao had a blood alcohol concentration level of 0.233 g/100 mL," investigator Adam Acosta wrote. The state's legal BAC limit is 0.08.
The investigative report states "all were in good spirits" when Chao departed from the guest house at 11:37 p.m. for a four-minute drive back to the main residence. Moments later, tragedy unfolded as security camera footage showed her Tesla Model X lurch and then reverse over limestone blocks and into the pond.
One of Chao's guests, Amber Keinan, told detectives that Chao called her at 11:42 p.m. and said she had driven her vehicle into the pond. Chao told Keinan she could not get out of the car and said it was filling up with water. They remained on the phone for eight minutes as the car slowly became submerged.
"Chao told Keinan the water was rising and she was going to die and said ‘I love you,'" the report states. "Chao then said her good byes to Keinan."
The report described Chao's voice as "calm."
Friends got into a kayak and attempted to reach the vehicle. Others called 911 at 11:55 p.m. and spoke with a dispatcher for 11 minutes.
Several minutes passed before law enforcement and firefighters arrived and began rescue operations. A deputy used a tool to break through the driver's side window of the Tesla and located Chao. An EMS worker attempted life-saving measures, but Chao was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:40 a.m.
"Although we are heartbroken, my family and I have the deep conviction - nurtured by our Christian faith - that we will see Angela again, along with her mother and my beloved wife, Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, and our daughter and her sister Jeanette. They are forever in our hearts and our minds," he said.
      2ND REPORT👇
On Feb. 10 at 11:53 p.m., a sheriff's deputy received a 911 call describing how a woman - later identified as Chao - had driven into a stock pond located between the ranch's main house and a guest house. The deputy arrived at the ranch about 17 minutes later and saw a man standing on top of a submerged vehicle about 25 yards from the pond's bank, according to the report.
The report says deputies, who jumped into the pond after stripping off some of their gear, struggled to extract Chao from the vehicle. The deputies attempted to find her by swimming through an opened back passenger door but were "unable to," according to the report.
The report describes a hectic scene. As the rescue effort continued, a group of Chao's friends were "screaming frantically" at the deputies from the pond's bank. They told deputies they knew Chao was inside the vehicle because she had called one of them as the Tesla was sinking.
The phone call lasted eight minutes, according to the report. During the call, Chao told her friend she was unable to get out, the water was rising and that she was going to die. She told the friend, "I love you," before the vehicle went underwater.
The friend Chao called had entered the pond with a kayak to attempt a rescue, according to the report.
Once additional emergency responders arrived, an emergency medical responder and a firefighter joined the deputies in the pond with tools, including a pike pole and a Halligan bar, a multipurpose tool used by firefighters, to force an entry. They managed to break a side window and extract Chao, according to the report.
Chao was removed from the vehicle at about 12:56 a.m., according to Benjamin Oakley, the emergency medical services chief for Blanco County. EMS responders delivered "advanced life support" for 43 minutes to try to resuscitate her.
Chao was pronounced dead at 1:40 a.m., according to the report.

Oh yes, and I do drive the same Model X from 2 years earlier. The only time it does not shift on command is when you first turn it on and it goes through the blinken lights and gives seatbelt warnings, etc. A 1 second delay before you can drive, and a nice nudge to get the seatbelt on. Like any other car you do need to take the time to get familiar. Stick shifts and gear selectors come in a wide variety. The stalks do all kinds of things differently.
The only car that may have let her escape would be some vintage antique with actual roll down windows. However, the back seat in the Model X is dumb. The no power door latch is hidden behind a speaker grille. Better just use the front.

      @OldHatefulCracka-zo6sm Місяць тому +22

Yes, you should. Don't stop to look around or go through the glove compartment, just roll down the window. Unfortunately most cars don't have the manual cranks to lower the window, so you'll need a functioning electrical system. So, you should be lowering the window while you have power, before theelectrical system craps out. If you can't get the window down, it'll be nearly impossible to open the car door because of the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the car. This is when you absolutely need to control your panic because you're going to have to be patient. Slow your breathing, take a couple of deep breaths and calm down. If you do you'll be ok. The car is going to fill with water, but that's exactly what you want, that's your plan. Staying calm as the car fills take a deep breath and hold it. Now you should be able to open the door. The pressure has equalized. The door will feel heavy and it'll be hard to push open but it will open. Now it is open and you can swim to the surface. Remain calm, calm saves your life, panic kills you. If you don't know which way is up then blow out some bubbles and follow them to the surface.

Thankfully the computer is smart enough not to allow it to go into reverse while traveling forward at that speed but was still stressful with my wife and son in the car and crazy traffic around me... By muscle memory I grabbed the shift lever at least 10 times this weekend thinking I was activating the wipers! @@beezer370 Chao, 50, died Feb.

Here’s a good tip though. Look at the stickers on your windows and see if they are labelled. Laminate is almost impossible to break. Tempered will shatter much easier. In my car my front windows are all laminate so if I’m ever in water and the electric windows stop working I’ll need to get in the back seat and bust out those windows because they are tempered. A window breaking device won’t work on laminate. I always check the stickers when I get a new car because Ive knows two people to drown in their cars. Some years back after the second incident I researched how to get out of a car. Showed my parents, my kids, nephews, and boyfriend which windows on their vehicle were labelled tempered and bought window breaking tools for all of our cars. Depending on how deep the car is, one can't roll down the window, the water pressure holds it against the door. Doesn't matter if it's done manually or with some engine/button. The window doesn't need to be fully covered in water for that to happen, even at a relatively "low" water level the pressure of that "slice" of water can be quite significant. I'd assume she would have tried that first.

  • @EB-wl9st
    @EB-wl9st 2 місяці тому +20

    1) Quick!! If you see you're about to go into the water, roll down your window fast!!! If there are other people or pets - roll down ALL windows at the same time!!
    2) If you weren't able to get the window down, remove the headrest off your seat and use the metal rods sticking out of it to break the window. Aim for the top corner of the door window glass. The corner edge will break much easier than the center of the window.
    3) The windshield is extremely difficult to break, try breaking the door window instead.
    4) You most likely won't be able to open the car door due to water pressure. However, there is a chance an unlocked door may open (with tremendous effort!) once the car is completely submerged underwater.

None of that works in a Tesla. Tesla uses laminated glass on side windows just like windshield glass, and the headrests aren't removable. You're not going to break *through* laminated glass without something like a large axe, and even then you'd have to chop at it for a while to make an opening big enough to escape out of.

Thank you, Dr. Grande, for an excellent analysis. A couple of thoughts: 1) We don't what measures Angela took, if any, to get out of the car before calling her friends for help. 2) She may not have had many occasions to do a K-turn, a more complex turn than simply choosing one gear. She had apparently owned the car for three years but had made the same mistake before. 3) the pond was estimated by rescuers to be 12-15 feet deep, and her car was said (by someone else) to be farther out than expected. So it's unknown how many feet above her car the water rose. 4) The initial call actually came at 11:56 pm, a @Statesman reporter explained to me, saying the Sheriff's office had to transmit the call to EMS, 7 minutes later. Note the Sheriff's Office listed the date of the incident as February 10, not 11.. 5) By the time rescuers arrived and her car was fully submerged, she may have already been brain dead, and no divers or breaking of glass could have saved her.
Another reader posted a photo of his damaged Tesla with the same gearstalk as Angela's. His car crashed into a Greek restaurant as he was trying to put his car into Reverse but it slammed Forward instead. Also having trouble with the gearstalk as Angela did, he totally understands how this tragic accident could have occurred. In 2016 a girl I knew made national news when her and her kids were killed on I-84 in NY state - she had run out of gas late at night and decided to call 911 while staying in the car and still in the highway lane - car was hit by a truck.

The few times I heard her talk to people I thought she might have a very slight learning disability, often could not understand a story or simple joke - but she was also very headstrong. I thought this was a dangerous combination. This might also explain running out of gas on a planned trip - possibly she was only familiar with highways near her home in Bridgeport CT, which have many more gas stops.

That results in a rather rigid foot to the floor while the brain catches up to the situation.

What I believe is said about waiting for it to sink is that, if it just started to sink, but the water level isn't like, at your knees or below, you just can't open the door because of the water pressure, and trying to do it will just make you lose precious oxygen. Ideally you realize that early enough and roll down the window soon enough, but it may be the case that people instinctively just try to push the door out in vain, and as they do it, soon the water is also pushing against the window, that can no longer be rolled down. There was an episode of "mythbusters" where they simulated some of this stuff, actually sinking a car on a swimming pool with both of them inside, one of them with an oxygen tank to save the other, who'd have died otherwise.
