So........Thanos, who wanted all life in the universe to end, was staging an intervention for Thor. Sure. Makes sense..... Also, Thanos and Odin handling Silver Surfer so easily? No. Just no.
Who said he wants all life in the universe to end? During the preceding events before The Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos was tasked to kill half the life in the universe by Death herself. After Death got salty with Thanos for DOING the thing she asked him to do because of the way he did it, Thanos, after the proceeding events, looked inward and began taking steps to discover his own purpose. Check out "Thanos: Epiphany."
If you read the complete, unedited comic, it is pretty clear Thanos is way out of his league. His durability kept him in the fight, but Odin was in no danger and was mainly just inconvenienced. Thanos lacked the offensive might to do any real harm to Odin.
People don't understand how huge of a feat this is for Thanos. Odin summoned Gugnir. They layed waste to Asgard. Not to mention Thanos just fought Thor with the power gem. And to top ot off Thanos wasn't even there to fight Odin.
So what I’m gathering is that Thanos held back and still managed to stalemate Odin. Which leads me to Believe Thanos was already more powerful than Odin back then. 🤷♂️
Odd how everyone forgot that thanos could not die in this fight. At that time in the comics he was banned from death's realm and was given a new body and amp'd
This fight is a great example of why Thanos is my favorite comic book character. He had nothing to gain from defeating Odin. He needed Odin's help, so he did what was necessary to get Odin to chill out and have some respect for Thanos. If Thanos appears weaker than Odin, that only serves Thanos's purposes. The question of Thanos's true potential was not answered here, as he had no reason to tap and reveal it.

This was awesome! This showcased how truly powerful Odin was. He tanks energy blasts from the Silver Surfer AND Thanos and returns it with extra! I hope current writers of Thor's comic focus on his adventures in Asgard and with other pantheons of earth. Having Thor with Odin power fighting earth super villains seems such a huge waste.
it was by no means a stand still, Thanos was having his butt thoroughly kicked by Odin, after that explosion, Odin was still standing without a scratch on him while Thanos was on the ground smoking. the fight only paused when Odin offered his respect to Thanos and asked if he yielded when Thanos slowly stood and said NO, and then Odin was about to kick his butt some more when Sif and Beta Ray Bill showed up.
I like how literally no one read the comic, they just say things without thinking. It was LITERALLY A STAND STILL until Odin called the spear. No one pays attention to the fact that Odin says their power is similar and is constantly surprised about how strong Thanos is. Nope, you guys just assume Odin is stronger because he's a skyfather, but Thanos is literally on his level. Gungnir amps Odin, clearly, because he had the edge only because of it.
I have read that comic many times, and aside from the fact that the story's authors didn't use the old english (thou, thy) style of talking that the Norse gods typically used in the comics and the artwork itself being subpar, it is one of my favorite battles. if you look at the images, no it wasn't a stand still, from the moment Odin arrived on the battlefield, he held the upper hand. He took out Drax with one attack and the attacks from Thanos and the Silver Surfer barely staggered Odin while Odin's attacks, outside of his initial attack, was knocking Thanos around like a rag doll and took the Surfer out of the fight in one hit as well. do I think Odin could have beat Thanos without Gungnir? absolutely, It would have just taken much longer and may have ended up completely razing Asgard to the ground. by using Gungnir he intended to end the battle quickly.
@@truechaos6927 "from the moment Odin arrived on the battlefield, he held the upper hand." against the whole army, yes, but not specifically against thanos. "do I think Odin could have beat Thanos without Gungnir? absolutely, It would have just taken much longer and may have ended up completely razing Asgard to the ground." i agree, but thanos could've beaten him as well. again, they're equal, so it's 50/50, as far as destructive capacity goes. in hax odin is superior.
How is this surprising? Thanos is more powerful than Mephisto, hurt Galactus, and is on par with Tyrant. Odin being on his level makes sense. Idk why people assume this is plot armor when it just makes sense with the rest of his feats.

@Sith Jawa Yeah I know that now. I typed that comment before I actually read the comic. Odin wasn't able to hurt Thanos until he had the weapon. They both no selled each others blasts and staggered each other with second blasts. Only when Odin had the weapon he had the advantage. The only advantage Odin got without the weapon was when he slapped Thanos aside, but Thanos was still standing and unharmed by that. Plus he was punching through all the telekinetic rocks Odin was throwing at him. They would be relative. Current Thanos claps Odin tho lol
@Sith Jawa What was wrong with him killing his mom? I agree Thanos' backstory is... well, Marvel is weird. He banged skeletons and didnt even like to kill until a stupid girl (Death) kept being a toxic friend.
Basically thanos can be defeated by odin. But it'll take more then just what happened here to bring thanos down. And this is the thing that gets ppl confuse and they start comparing thor with superman, thanos does not have invincibility like superman but his durability is insane. And the odin force isn't really defined as to what it is, it just says its a "mystical force". But does it produce magic attacks, or is it a mystical force that gather energy in it that unleashes a physical attack which may include energy blast or energy manipulation? Cause if the attack itself was magic, thanos should be dead in one hit, remember thanos is not invulnerable. But his durability is insane. But against actual magic he would stand no chance. So this bring that question up again, if the odin force is just a magic source that gather physical energy instead of magical energy, and for magic there needs to be an chant as seen with every powerful magic user in marvel and dc. But in this fight odin doesn't chant so im guessing the odin force is a mystical source that produce physical attacks, not magic attacks. That's y thanos is taking the blast head on. And that brings me to the other part, if thanos had the infinity stones I certainly believe he could defeat odin even with the force, but it just depends how he play his cards. Now let me explain fanboys, odin is powerful but his power is not absolute. He has limits as well even if he's consider to be one of the most powerful beings in marvel, but the infinity stones power are absolute, there's nothing that cannot bend to their will in its own universe which is the marvel universe, and they can only be destroyed by its own power, not even odin have the power to come close to what the stones can do. But the draw back might be the stone holder thanos, it depends how he uses it.

Thanos was literally equal to Odin in this fight. Odin wasn't suppressed at all, why do people keep saying that? He literally never implies he's holding back and says he's surprised by how strong Thanos is.
90's comics Asgardians and Olympians were in a league of their own. Odin and Zeus on more than one occasion swatted away team of Earth's or alien superhumans like mere annoyances. This was the first resurrection Thanos, which Lady Death enhanced beyond his previous power levels, so all of his physical stats and energy manipulation stats were far above what they were when Warlock ended him. Here Thanos survived because he was granted immortality, he could be injured but never destroyed, even an attempt at total disintegration wouldn't suffice because Lady Death won't allow him to die. Regardless Odin had him cornered and shaking. A couple blasts and fists and he would be knocked unconscious. Plus despite the collateral damage here, Odin was holding back, A LOT.

Esse Thanos é sua versão regular (sem IG ou Cubo, etc), conseguiu manter uma boa luta contra Odin que é um Skyfather, porém Odin é um Galaxy Buster, Thanos no máximo é um Planet Buster.

For someone who’s supposed to be “all wise” and all knowing, Odin sure misreads a lot of situations like these.

Why do you say that?

I would make my pants if i saw this battle occure in real life
90's comics Asgardians and Olympians were in a league of their own.
Keep in mind thanos had no stones here and this was before he became immortal.
