Step-by-step Guide to Cutting a Vidal Sassoon Shag Haircut:

Water spray bottle
Hair clips or hair ties
Comb
Hairdressing cape or towel
Hair thinning shears (optional)
Step 1: Prepare the hair and client
Start by washing and conditioning the client's hair to make it clean and manageable.
Drape a hairdressing cape or towel over the client's shoulders to protect their clothing.
Have a consultation with the client to understand their desired length, layers, and preferences.
Step 2: Section the hair
Comb through the hair to detangle it.
Create a center part down the middle of the head, dividing the hair into two equal sections (left and right).
Step 3: Establish the perimeter
Begin cutting at the back. Take a small section of hair at the nape of the neck.
Hold the section between your index and middle fingers and lift the hair at a slight angle (around 45 degrees) from the head.
Use the scissors to cut across the hair section in a straight line, creating the initial guide length. This will be the longest layer of the shag.
Step 4: Cut the layers
Continue taking horizontal sections of hair across the back of the head, working your way up to the crown.
Over-direct the hair slightly upward as you progress to maintain length in the front.
Cut each section using the initial guide length to create a graduated, layered effect. The layers should be shorter as you move towards the crown.
Step 5: Cut the front layers
Now, move to the front sections. Take a section of hair from the front, just above the ear.
Elevate the section to about a 90-degree angle from the head and cut it at the desired length, starting with the longest layer near the front.
Gradually increase the length as you move backward, creating a soft, face-framing effect.
Step 6: Blend the layers
Comb down the hair and check for any unevenness or harsh lines.
Blend the layers by holding small sections of hair at a 45-degree angle and lightly point-cutting into the ends. This will soften the edges and give the cut a more textured look.
Step 7: Add optional texture
If desired, you can use hair thinning shears to add more texture to the ends. Be cautious not to overdo it, as it can lead to frizziness.
Step 8: Check for balance
Comb through the hair again and ensure that both sides are balanced and even.
Step 9: Style the hair
Style the shag haircut by blow-drying it with a round brush for volume and movement.
You can also add some texturizing product to enhance the layers and create a tousled look.
