A Perfect Day in Helsinki, Finland

  • Helsinki is the capital of Finland and a city full of inspiration. In this video, we spend a perfect day exploring some of Helsinki's top attractions. Finnish design is known around the world so we begin at the Design Museum. It's located in the fashionable Design District, which is a vibrant neighbourhood to wander around. The museum used to be a school and it's where Tove Jansson was once a pupil. Tove is the creator of the internationally-beloved Moomin characters. If you visit Finland you will most definitely see Moomin everywhere, as they are a staple of Finnish culture. Our next stop is the Moomin Cafe where you can sip on a latte with your favourite Moomin character on top while cuddling little plush toys and reading Moomin books. Once we're caffeinated we head to Oodi, Helsinki's Central Library. It's a remarkable building that has made headlines around the world for its architecture and innovation. Next we walk to the Kamppi Chapel of Silence which is a small chapel right in Helsinki's bustling downtown. It's a place where people can come to be quiet, reflect, and have an anonymous chat with mental health staff if they need to talk. Nearby is the Amos Rex art museum which has a really cool roof that you can walk and run all over. There are large curved windows that allow light down into the museum below ground. The Amos Rex building was constructed in the 1930s and many of the design details have been preserved. All the exploring works up an appetite so we head to the Katajanokka area of Helsinki which is near the water. Ravintola Nokka is a restaurant located in some of the city's oldest buildings where the chef has been named the country's top chef. The tasting menu is delicious and our server knows where every single ingredient has been sourced. We end the night back in the Design District at our cozy Airbnb which has been the perfect place to call home in Helsinki.

      You guys are inspiring! 😊 not only have you picked the best locations to go (I’ve lived in Inari, Rovaniemi and Helsinki, and have been to most of the cities you’ve been to - Next stop Philippines!), but your top picks and the way you share them with us are so much fun! It’s obvious you’re following your calling. Huge respect for your authenticity and life loving attitude 👌🏼

      Not Helsinki related but I love the British Library in London. The Moomins I remeber being on the BBC in the 1950s so they have lasted well and are still popular

    What an inspiring way to kick off the new year! Fabulous video! You've found yet another place that we HAVE to visit!!! I'd want to spend literally all day (or more) thoroughly experiencing the Design Museum. I love the Moomins, too. I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the public library. It's so refreshing to see a public space that is all inclusive, family friendly, inspires creativity and knowledge. Wow! I was struck to see the beautiful Church of Silence. It's interesting and inspirational that the Lutheran Church teamed up with the mental health association to provide a space for silence, such a valuable commodity that can be easily overlooked. Very wise. Every place you featured, including your Airbnb, and the food you ate - everything in Helsinki- seems imbued with so much thought and love. This has been an all-around inspirational video, guys, and definitely one of your best!

    Really interesting video, definitely a fun day. You guys always manage to find really intriguing museums and attractions. Didn’t realise how many famous designs were from Finland, nor that the Moomins were from there. Used to like them as a child. Have been to Helsinki myself, but just for a short work conference. Would be great to go back and see more of the city.

    You are so smiling and laughing, it's catching, and I smile this side of the screen too.
    I'm a Finn, but I've visited Helsinki only a few times when passing through for cruise ships. So I can't recommend anything there, and am seeing in your video places that I do not know, so it's interesting to me too. Helsinki is good for street arts and concerts, but in summer. A metal live music bar/restaurant there, that would be a Finnish thing.
    Watched a video of natural history museum in Helsinki, and it was pretty cool how they surrounded you with them animals and plants in corridors and rooms. And how in the displays animals were arranged like they were alive, walking in packs, predators chasing them and so on, with sceneries expanding behind them so it was more like watching out from a frozen, back in time window.

    • @EileenAldis
      @EileenAldis  4 роки тому +1

      Hello! So glad you enjoyed the video and it made you smile :) Which part of Finland are you from? We've never been to the natural history museum but it sounds like an interesting place to visit. We'd also love to return to Helsinki in summer weather. I'm sure the city would feel different and it'd be fun to experience some festivals or concerts too.

    • @Aurinkohirvi
      @Aurinkohirvi 4 роки тому

      @@EileenAldis Well, most Finns think summer is the season the climate is wonderful - winter is dark and cold, but summer is easy, not too hot. Although warmer countries' people I hear saying summer isn't warm enough. If you're into Opera, there's Savonlinna international opera festivals in a medieval castle, Pori Jazz is a big jazz happening (and not just jazz) and Tuska is metal concert, to name a few. I'm near Tampere. Big enough city there's not much need to go to Helsinki, and I don't have any relatives living there.

In Helsinki, Tuska metal festival in June, in April ballet festival and Chamber music festival, in July Flow festival (indierock and world music). Then there's concerts next summer in Helsinki at least by Green Day, Judast Priest, Eric Clapton, Kiss, Kim Wilde and Celine Dion.

    We're heading to Helsinki soon, but just for airport transfer! Too bad right? After looking at your video, I guess I should plan a proper trip to Helsinki itself!

      Just read how Helsinki airport has become a busy hub between Europe and Asia, with 20+ routes to Asia (mainly to Japan & China) and now they are working hard to make the long haul travellers to stop in Helsinki for a while. Lapland has become popular, Helsinki wants to do the same :)

    I'm thinking about the cleaning crew in the library. All those little fingers all over everywhere and washing all those curves when kids are sliding, etc.
    Very round and curved areas in this part of Helsinki. Dinner was quite interesting! Miss your replies lately. Enjoy! 😉

      Hi Gina! Hope 2020's off to a good start :) Yes, dinner was delicious and unique and very cool that they know where every single ingredient is from. The restaurant is also located in some of the oldest buildings in Helsinki (formerly warehouses).

    Oh, and Marc, I have (rather loud) continuous tinnitus in ears too. Got it about 20 years ago working in a noisy job, and it was first driving me crazy. But now it's just a bother, missing part of the high pitch frequency, and making speech harder to hear. Not nice to have, but at least it's not an illness nor a serious disability.

    • @EileenAldis
