First Impressions of St. Petersburg, Russia

  • With 72 visa free hours in Russia, we hit the ground running in St. Petersburg! Waking up in our cabin on the ship, opening the curtains, and seeing our first view of Russia is something we'll never forget. We disembark, clear Russian customs, and join a guided tour around the city. This is a great way to get an overview and see the main sights right away, like St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Church of the Saviour on the Spilled Blood. You can quickly get an impression and decide if you'd like to return somewhere to spend more time. We cannot believe the enormous scale of St. Petersburg. This city of about 5.5 million people is truly vast with buildings that stretch for blocks. We feel overwhelmed at its size and by how much there is to see and do. Not wanting to waste a single minute of our 72 visa free hours, we head straight to the famous Hermitage Museum. It's the biggest museum in Russia and one of the biggest in the entire world. We visit the main building, which is located inside the Winter Palace. Each room feels more opulent than the last and we're left breathless and overwhelmed. At the end of our first day of sightseeing, we grab a Yandex taxi home (think Russian Uber) and head to our hotel. Check out the rest of our videos to see how you can visit Russia without a visa.

I lived and worked in STP for almost three years. Your video produced great nostalgia, and for a second I even saw in the background the building I used to live in. However, the very first thing I noticed in your video was the weather. You really lucked out with your first day in the city. You can go a month in STP and not see the sun, especially in the winter, and here you had bright blue, mostly cloudless skies. I hope you took in as much as possible, as it is a great city. I enjoy your "tourist's eye" to see the beautiful there. I have many memories of someone who lived there, when it wasn't always glamorous. That said, the architecture there is always beautiful no matter what. I hope to see more of your STP trip.

There's an old saying in Finland from the 1800s: "to build something like Saint Isaac's Church". It means building or doing something that takes a really long time, or will never be completed. It took 40 years to build the cathedral and as we see there are still scaffolds on the roof. It never ends.

Yes, there are so many huuuuge buildings that seem to go on forever. The Hermitage itself is so incredible and I like to imagine what it was like as a palace. The art inside is obviously amazing too - overwhelming how much there is of it!

Try everything fermented food and beetfoot soup (borscht) with the famous sour cream. Russian fermented pickles does just beat any others with hands down. (If I'm not too late). :) Some of those actually explode when cutting them for grilled sandwich where they do belong and well in goulash soup and well, for everything.

I was in St-P for 2 weeks, and I love Museums, even after 2 weeks I could not visit all the Museums I wanted. But contrary to you I was in the first 2 weeks of July, every night I saw what is called the "White Nights" this is when the sun doesn't totally go down and get back up. It was magical, I have 2500 photos from St-P because of all I saw. I will go back there maybe in late May or early July again in 2024. Something funny happened when visiting the Hermitage, you can not use any flash when taking photos I was with my brother and I had taken many photos already, I went into a room where they had a painting by Leonardo Da Vinci. On both sides of this painting, you found 2 Russian guards, my flash went off, I was like "OH! F@@k" I am in trouble here. I think turned many deep shades of red, they almost took me out of the Museum, because of this. I was showing them my camera indeed the setting was no flash, but a wonderful Russian Lady spoke to them on my behalf and they were fine with me after.

Wow, the White Nights experience sounds amazing! Would love to see that. No wonder you took so many photos...we do the same! That's a great story about nearly getting kicked out of the museum haha. Very kind of the Russian woman to help you out. Love travel stories like that. We made other videos about our trip to Russia if you'd like to see more by the way. Curious if there's more crossover of our trips. They're here: bit.ly/russiaplaylist :)

@Aldis You are asking if I enjoyed your videos????? "HECK, YES, WE DID!" Yes, it is in caps. What you do not know about me, or might I say my couple, is that we are a gay couple. Since you travel a lot, I am telling you this, I know you will not be acting weird toward us. After my first visit to St-Petersburgh, I chatted with different people on the net, and a younger, sweet, kind man told me many things about St-Petersburgh; he would gladly be my guide. We chatted many times, and what happens Pomah is now my husband. Pomah in English translates to Roman. Pomah and I watched your video, and he froze the video and said things about what we just saw in your video. Sometimes, he would speak so fast that he would switch to his Russian mother tongue, and we laughed about it. I do not know if your guide told you this detail; all the palaces or houses etc.. in St-Petersburgh may not change the colour they are painted. Thank you so much for your videos.
