Great layout. It does get me excited. I do agree that it is disappointing that there were more well-rounded scholars in the past. If anything, I would have hoped technology would have augmented our ability to far outshine them. But these days we are very good at specializing, as you say. On this point, I'm reminded of the John Adam's quote that goes along the lines of "I do A, so that my children are afforded the ability to do B, so that their children are afforded the ability to do C and D." I wish we were better at reaping the benefits of our ancestors. But in my own estimation, true or not, the average person still finds themselves essentially trapped with near-meaningless work. But your ideas of an institute are right onboard with what I envision for the future: more time, resources, and space cleared up for pursuits that hitherto may not have been as accessible. Really the trick is, as you are already aware, getting people to even realize and care about the possibilities that lie in front of us. Entire fields of study, tracks of knowledge still yet to be founded or conceived.
Thank you for this. Someone else recently mentioned that it seemed as if we might ultimately separate into those who can and those who cannot conceive of deep work and focus.

The field linguistics path matches my own studies very closely, perhaps just swapping the "Arabic" family for the "Chinese" family of languages. You've even included Basque, Tagalog, Quechua, and Māori (though in my case, it's another Polynesian language, Hawaiian). I really hope this materializes some day. I loved hearing your excitement and passion as you talked about it, especially as you went over the two sample curricula.

A lot of your advice and ideas have been influential on my learning for a number of years now. I don’t think your academy in its current form quite fits my current studies, but I’m excited to see what comes out of the broader community in terms of integrating language learning and other kinds of broader learning. I think there’s other people/organizations with related goals and it’ll be interesting to see how more can collaborate together to make advice and resources more broadly available.

Fantastic video. You really do make a good case for how scholars of polyliteracy are a valuable asset in their own right and how they are valuable resources to scholars in other fields too. All that remains is acquiring some sort of institutional backing.

Thank you for the video, it’s exciting to hear of what can come of the academy in the future. I enjoy hearing the potential tracks and plans per year, though the field linguistic path does seem overwhelming with so many different languages from different families, though I’m sure there are people out there willing to put in the time to accomplish that. You may be interested that Luke Ranieri just put on his website for sale the Gospel of John in Greek and Latin. He makes Audiobooks and creates material to help teach Latin and Greek. Happy Easter

As someone who was born in a Kurdish household and then living in a Persian dominant culture and environment, and then going on to learn English. Thinking I knew enough in those languages. Until my major(or passion?) forced me to read more in those languages and realizing how little I know, even reading contemporary Persian books are a relatively steep process. Just to thought of learning any more language and even at the level of being able to read literature, scares me to death. But the thought being able to read French and Greek books in the original langauge is a truly exciting and mostly unrealistic goal at least for me in my current situation.
Learn enough French to read Simenon and from there little by little start reading harder books.
I think your fear itself may be what is making this most unrealistic. Can you try to reframe it?
Very interesting as usual. I can say in my experience as a Fine Art graduate the standard in the art schools is horrendous. Now completely taken over by woke nonsense and the celebration of art that's facile and currently what the market requires. Gone is any connection with western heritage; that's now all considered colonialist etc. So the students have no foundation in basic aesthetics, can't name any classical aspect of the visual world. Also no ability to draw to any basic level. The national galleries however don't seem worried about all this. So all the art of the past will eventually be bereft of supporters and comprehension. And you know what comes next? The destruction of that past.
I am saddened but not at all surprised to learn that the Fine Arts may have been undermined by the last century in a fashion parallel to what has happened in the Humanities.
@@ProfASAr Yes sadly. I really don't think doing a Fine Art course now would give you a decent visual education. I like your approach. You aren't being elitist (a criticism easily banded around) but aspiring to high standards.

Thank you for this extremely interesting and detailed plan! I so wish to be able to attend something like that!
Everything sounds absolutely lovely, although, I must say, I would definitely want to put the Ancient Languages (Norse and Latin) up front, say, year 2 for each, because they would both assist the modern ones immensely, and starting early means that one develops proficiency in them sooner, which is paramount for accessing older materials. One could also adapt this course structure to other areas by swapping out languages, allowing for one to focus on Slavic languages, Arabic languages, Canaanite languages, languages of India, of the Sinosphere, and so on!
Very curious idea about the field linguistics course.
One thing I noticed though is that knowledge of English seems to be presupposed. Is that so or did I misunderstand? Do you think that in an ideal world there would be adequate materials for the study of all the foundational languages in every language?
Hello Yan and thanks as always for your substantive comments. Of course I could envision more "tracks," and the historical sequence one you mention would certainly be one. Yes, I am presupposing an English base, but would modify any sequence based on existing abilities.
Do you have any opinion on the Librivox project (libre/public domain audiobooks of old/copyright-expired texts)? Have you done any talks regarding this project?
I not only know about Libivox but am very happy it exists, but no, I have never done any talks about the project.
Have you read Schopenhauer's 'Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung' professor? I'd love to know what you think of it if you have
For most of my life, if you had asked me who my favorite philosopher was, I would have said Schopenhauer. I haven't read him much in recent years, but he is probably still among them. One of my revisions to Adler's canon would certainly be to include "Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung" in it.
I'm learning English right now and I'm college student my aim is to be fluent or in a good conversation level in six languages:germany korean Chinese Russian English as I'm still learning and anthor language I'm not sure about that but for now I want to end my journey with English as soon as possible for many reasons and for having time to other languages too I must say I'm not learning these languages because I'm just like it but it also because I important for me and my future to do that . Well I have time if I want to actually but my problem is time management for that and how to keep up along the journey.
You should aslo check out the work of Steve Kaufmann. These two polyglots are my favorite ones.
Time management is something it takes a long time to master!
