Alexander Arguelles - Language Learning as Mental Exercise and Discipline

- This keynote address will focus on the many analogies between language learning and athleticism. Approaching language study as a mental sport or game can provide an important and valuable key to successful learning. Just as one needs to exercise the body in order to remain physically fit, so one needs to exercise the mind in order to remain mentally fit, and studying foreign languages is a particularly effective form of mental training. Just as one needs to train properly and progressively in order to get and stay physically fit or one will risk injury, burn-out, stasis, and lopsided development, so also one needs to study properly and progressively in order to avoid similar difficulties in the mind when learning languages. One set of mental muscles that is all too often neglected even in otherwise intense polyglot workouts is the diachronic muscles, so this keynote address will lay particular stress on how the study of ancient and medieval languages can open up lost worlds and enable you to know a culture through the ages and not just as it is now. Furthermore, just as when one starts to take sports and exercise more seriously, one needs to shift one’s attitude and approaches from an amateur mindset to a professional one, so the same is true in the mental arena, and this shift can be carried from foreign language learning to other intellectual pursuits. Finally, just as physical exercise provides benefits transcending the corporeal, such as increased confidence and stamina, so also the discipline and habits necessary for success in language learning can be transferred to other, more creative pursuits after they have been developed in the study of foreign languages.

I wish the professor would post more videos :(
I never realized how witty the Prof. Arguelles could be. Really great, practical information here.
Humor is a sign of great intellect
As I listened to Professor Arguelles I couldn't help but think of Cal Newport's "Deep Work". The Professor is living proof of this deep work concept in practice.
Excellent point - I like professor Alex's quote: "You just have to show up and do the work."
He has such a lovely voice. I could listen to him reading the phone book... preferably in Russian.
I actually agree. He has a curiously inviting voice, a very light baritone.
That as well as his charming, articulate accent.
He did read Assimil Russian in one if his videos
I think otherwise: his observations and ideas are so interesting but he has such a nervous style of speaking that it is hard to follow and not become nervous, too. I was astonished that he spoke about meditation and breathing exercises because this I would have been suggesting him to do
Great sense of humor, great life stories, great ideas for learning languages, a motivating guy.
I am sad professor doesn't do videos anymore. So much quality, very motivational, I rewatch some of the videos from time to time. :(
I'm in this phase of constant planning and preparing. :)
Me too
Same here - I really enjoyed his videos and his explanations are straight forward and so clear. He was one of the first people I heard explain how to do the shadowing method. I like to rewatch his videos sometimes as well.
He started again
Glad someone else feels that same way.
I could listen to Prof. Arguelles all day long. He and Lydia Machová are my favourite polyglots.
this was such an enjoyable speech to listen to
I used to watch Professor Arguelles' videos years ago! I was afraid something terrible happened to him because I haven't seen anything from him in such a long time. Glad to know he is around and about still :)
His discipline is something unachievable..he is kind of a saint of languages or something like that..I really admire Alexander...great speech here..very passionate
He is purring because he is a cat. I am learning languages because I'm a polyglot. So true, but I haven't realised it before. Thank you for giving me this insight!
He's kind of a different guy form what I read in . I'd really like to see more of his appearance! So inspiring !
What a well-sauced professor. Amazing presentation.
Great presentation! Very informative👍
He seems a little cowed. He's a living legend!
my tip for NES that are interested in language learning is to expose yourself to as least english as possible.
Zen and the art of learning all the languages.
My favorite part starts at 28:29 .
love this guy!
Such an inspiration for me!
really informative and need more
I like the message here from 45:44 - 46:16
good video! The most important thing in life is knowledge of foreign languages! Thanks to foreign languages you can realize all your dreams and realize your grandiose ambitions! I would like to recommend all the practices of Yuriy Ivantsiv ''Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign language". This book will be an indispensable helper, a handbook for every person who studies a foreign language! This book contains invaluable tips, questions and answers, and solutions to problems faced by anyone who studies a foreign language! Knowledge is power! And knowledge of foreign languages is your power multiplied by many times! Success to all in self-development!
This way deeper than language learning....
t h a n k y o u
I loved it❤️
love arguelles
:( no CC in any language:(((
summary: he wanted to be a polyglot he resisted the commitment to it for 30 years, even more than that he wanted to be a writer which he started doing after 50 years. he felt that same resistance again but it was pretty easy for him because he had already developed the auto didactic skills needed to pursuit something like that.
How can I add community captions to this? It’s excluding Deaf people.
Are the automatic captions not working? You are very welcome to send them to us and we’ll add them. It’s very kind of you to offer to help us in this way!
@@PolyglotConference Automatic captions are turned off by you, the uploader.
About the stamina and the routine: be a house wife and a mother😂😂, it is typically men that talk about creating routines (in language learning)
What!! It's like his talking about me ouch compiling
This guy is definitely on the spectrum.
