Professor, is your Q&A page still active? Would that be the best place to reach out for more specific advice?

    • @ProfASAr

You shame me in a good way: yes, my Q&A is active, but you are right to ask because I haven't posted anything new there in a while. I mean to post one a week, the way I post a video every Saturday morning, but no one holds me to this by asking as you do, so it slips under the carpet.

    Dear Prof. Arguelles,
As youtube videos go, this one has not been seen by many people (1.3k as I write this). This makes me feel like I am specially privileged to have seen it, because it has contained invaluable insight. Thank you again, from Budapest.

If I may add two cents. Take advantage of the opportunities you have. At the least read the best books you can find and try to find people to share them with. I listen to audiobooks and started a book club with the headmaster of the classical school here. I love that you have utilized the GBWW. That has been the main format for audiobook choices.

I've been watching your videos for at least 10 years now. As an aspiring academic, I can only agree with everything you've said. I finished my PhD studies a year ago. It was a challenging, yet highly enriching, experience. The quest for a position within academia is now the main challenge. However, it can be quite discouraging in today's academic world, characterized by many hurdles in the name of competitiveness and prestige, which can lead many scholars to be in a precarious situation. Nonetheless, thank you for your advice, as I would probably be unhappy if I did not pursue my dream of a scholarly life.

Hi Alexander, thanks for this video!!
I'm 22 and currently majoring in Latin and English at Universities. For these past several years languages have become my life passion -- I'm currently studying Latin, Greek (ancient), Sanskrit, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Danish, Russian, and recently Arabic. I have a lot of time (and am evidently a bit of a monomaniac), and so when life flows smoothly I have time each day to work on each of those languages. My primary goal for them, at the moment, is just to develop reading ability and immerse myself in their original literatures, which I'm currently able to do fairly well for most of them.
I struggle most with Sanskrit. I can read the Ramayana well, the Gita too, but struggle, and become very frustrated, with more advanced texts. Is there any particular advice you have for reaching proficiency in a language like that? or anywhere you discuss approaching an old, intricate, and expansive language like it?
I haven't found academia, or the university, a hospitable or helpful environment for developing my own learning, personally. So I'm not sure if I would like to continue with a PHD, although I intend on at least doing an honour's year. My heart's set on a writing career, which I might do in conjunction with teaching in a high-school. If I attain some erudition, I'd like to share it, or try to share it. Oh well, I'm young and confused.
Thanks for making your videos and sharing your experience and expertise; I resonate a lot with your devotion to study and literature.

Thank you for your substantive comment. Regarding your Sanskrit question: time and experience, time and experience. You shouldn't expect to read "advanced texts" with ease until you have spent a cumulative total of years reading other texts. But beyond that, yes, stimulating your mind to actually think in the language will hurry the process along, which is what I am trying to do with my current Tuesday circle.

Professor, I've developed a fascination with the Persian language over the past year or so, I plan to buy some readers etc, but
I just to ask if you would recommend the assimil Persian course?
Like yourself I'm a huge fan of assimil and your shadowing method.
My French is at a level where the teaching language wouldn't be a problem.
I slso wanted to ask if the advanced level Arabic course be worth it, I've gone through the old(awful) edition and the new better version plus linguaphone.

    • @ProfASAr
      @ProfASAr  27 днів тому

Yes, both the Persian and the advanced Arabic are well worth it.

I am quite new to the channel so I don't know if you actually have a PhD or not but if you do, in what subject did you do it in because everything that you talk about on this channel is stuff I am interested in so I would naturally want to know what have you done academically which gives you deep knowledge in those things.
