Everything about this is phenomenal, but one thing that stood out was how *hopeful* Orpheus seems here. It makes Doubt Comes In hit different, because we see him start out with the same hope he had in the first version of Wait For Me, only for it to be crushed when doubt does eventually come in.
@@dignature123I saw it on Sunday for the first time, I knew the myth so I knew it was going to happen, but the gasp that came out of me was as if I’d been punched in the gut!
Yes, when we begin a love relationship, we hold so much faith and hope. I definitely saw that in this scene. I ache for them. I remember when my husband and I started dating, I felt the same hope and doubt. He was so good looking that I was afraid he had unresolved issues stemmed in insecurity that might manifest in infidelity. Of course, that didn’t happen but we lived in so much poverty. There’s nothing wrong with having a small wallet, but it was tough at times. We also had so much love for one another and for life. I see now we were very fortunate, just like this youthful, energetic love. I feel my husband may have liked back once too many because we’re now separated. He disappeared from our path three years ago. I’m walking by myself now, and I’m waiting for his reappearance.
Shoutout to Grace Hodgett-Young (Eurydice). She pulling double duty. Because not only she had a cameo in Sunset Boulevard performance with Tom, she was also nominated and still had to perform with her current show Hadestown. Good for her :)
To the people saying he was weak for turning back: this is Orpheus. If he wasn't the kind of person who would turn back to make sure Euridice was walking with him, he wouldn't be the kind of person who goes down to Hell to get their love back. This wasn't a test. Hades always knew he would turn around. That is just the hopeless romantic he is. He was never going to be able to save her :(
Yes and a completely like different view is that this is Greek mythology. The heroes always have some fatal flaw: Odysseus’ was hubris, (most of them are tbh. Their egos are too big) but orpheus’ was doubt
Each character has special moments of delivery, and it is amazing to see and hear. From Persephone’s delivery of “you let them go” with hades, to the Fates (special shoutout to the 3rd fate who sings the part so hauntingly and powerful), to Hermes who I could listen deliver any of their lines with such conviction, to the hope in Orpheus’s hope. It really is amazing
The pure diversity of the people in this show is insane. Jamaican, Irish, British, Mexican, African, a person without an arm, a trans person, and so much more.
It is really cool! I had no clue Hadestown did both race and gender blind casting but its really nice. It makes every cast actually feel unique in a way you cant get when you have to go for the exact same gender, race, body type, and accent. The Jamaican lady who plays Hermes does a great job and her voice scratches the same itch that OG Hermes'' accent did. Although I will say it is slightly funny hearing "Im coming" in such a heavy British accent when youre used to the American version XD
I will always love the line: "The dog you really got to dread Is the one that howls inside your head It's him whose howling drives men mad And a mind to its undoing" It's not only the general foreshadowing, but also just how true that line is for people.
Saw this on Friday and the casting is just impeccable. Hades in particular was phenomenal I honestly couldn’t imagine a better one. But everyone was phenomenal. The production was beautiful too. I want to go again so bad. This cast is incredible.
@@ellien-w619 Patrick Page did it on Broadway. No hate to this guy, he's certainly better than the US National Tour Hades, but to come out and say some dude did it better than Patrick Page ever did when he was with the show for years and years and truly defined the role and how its cast is a step too far for me.
I've seen it twice live including with the original Broadway cast, it never fails to deliver plus how it ends and just starts again makes it an instant replay. I just wish they'd do a live shoot and upload it somewhere like they did with Hamilton and Waitress and a few others
Same here except the Broadway version in early January with Jordan Fisher and Solea Pfeiffer - won the lottery - wow. Hoping to see it again next month in NYC before Jordan Fisher leaves. Finally gave up on the Broadway lottery as the show got even more popular. The west end version also is so strong...
I've just realised why I found this performance so baffling on TV - they cut out a tonne of context at the beginning! I get it now. Looking forward to seeing this cast tonight.
I watched this a few weeks ago and Eurydice was an understudy (she is playing the second fate in this clip) and I honestly could not tell one bit until I was looking closely at the program later. I cannot believe this didnt dominate the Oliviers this year, I saw only one nomination. It is hands down the best theatre I have ever seen, even my partner who is not bothered by musicals was blown away enough that he wants to see it again with better seats.
I think we had a few understudies too but honestly you couldn't tell until you compared them closely to the programme and even then we weren't fully sure because they were all so absolutely insanely talented!
you guys need to know this persephone is the absolute best, seen her as persephone twice now and she blew me away both times, absolutely incredible! show stealer for sure
Donal Finn was phenomenal, my family and i were transfixed by his powerful performance, but there was not weak member in the whole cast- what a show! Thank you all.
I got the privilege of watching this cast, it was incredible in all senses of the word. I was reduced to tears by the emotion on the faces of these wonderful actors.
This is the first time I've seen anything from the London version of 'Hadestown'. I like this interpretation. I'll have to listen to the entire West End soundtrack.
Its amazing. Im so happy more and more musicals are doing this cause it adds so much to the viewing experience. It also allows you to actually get the best actor for the job, instead of going for an aesthetic copy of the OG actor, which risks you losing a bit in the voice or acting skill.
I saw them about a month ago. Absolutely phenomenal. I sat sobbing at parts that never struck as hard before (Epic III, y'all... I'm still recovering). This cast is unbelievable.
Saw this cast at the weekend and i was absolutely blown away by the show. Irish Orpheus, Trinidadian Hermes with a lone American Hades bring so much to the storytelling. Orpheus and Eurydice are just gorgeous together but Hades and Persephone stole the show for me. Perfect casting all around
doesn't matter what cast, I get chills every single time I hear this song. The way it builds, and the growing feeling of dread and passion as we get closer and closer to the moment that Orpheus let's his doubt's cloud his mind and his love for Eurydice cause him to turn, WOW
I saw them live a few weeks ago and I honestly prefer this Donal as Orpheus as opposed to Reeve. I mean I LOVE Reeve, but Donal has such incredible emotions when he sings. He had me sobbing
I love that so many of the principle actors have strong regional accents. Irish, (edit, was wrong about actor’s origin, She’s Trinidadian!) . Just awesome.
Seen it in London, Lyric theatre. Awsome actors! All of them! They absolutely stunned me! I love the Eurydice (Grace Hodgett Young), the Hermes with dreads (Waylon Jacobs), the amazing lady of the underworld (Gloria Onitiri). Let’s shorten this: holy crap that was lifechanging! Can‘t stop watching videos, singing, humming and whistling the songs to myself. Thank you all for fulfilling this masterpiece! ❤
It also works with the story because the residents of Hadestown are desperate people/the first to die in the natural crisis following Persephone’s absence. People with disabilities can struggle much more in times of trouble than people without them. It makes sense that someone with a disability would take the deal to save themselves.
And geez- Anything from this i could not believe- and now I have a reason to go! Persephone is BEAUTIFUL and has a great, GREAT voice! Same for Euridice, Hades, and Orpheus. The amount of emotion in this is so controlled, you wanna cry, but its also so happy!
Going to see it in the west end this weekend, gutted to have not been able to see Donal and Grace but also so SO excited to see Madeline and Dylan take it on!!

this west end cast might be my fave after the original. the accents add SO MUCH to the show wow
SOOO MUCH
This cast gave me goosebumps. They’re AMAZING! I wish I was in England right now.
I hated it. I dont care about the speaking accent but it really hindered the singing specifically for Grace Hodgett young and Donal finn.
The west end knocks it out the park with casting
