You missed the book musical that began the entire modern era in the 20s- tackling racism in a manner that has never dated, packed with fabulous music - Showboat!
i have so much respect musicals because I grew up around them. I worked at a dinner theater that exclusively does musicals- i've been lucky to see the behind the scenes. it's requires a lot of hard work and skill
I think Warner Bros. would've done a better job with the musical like they did with the Phantom of the Opera. I love the Phantom of the Opera film. That movie is so underrated when it came out in 2004.
@@aysada it isn't a terrible musical.. it is well suited for stage, but definitely not the big screen. Tom Hooper got cocky after the success of Les Mis, and it bit him in the @$$
Sorry to quibble. I enjoyed all of the musicals listed. BUT: West Side Story was not just Stephen Sondheim. Still at the start of his career, he only wrote the lyrics. The incredible music was written by the great Leonard Bernstein!
Company, Guys and Dolls, The Music Man, Porgy and Bess, South Pacific, Candide, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George. Just a few of the artistically groundbreaking shows you might have included with some different criteria.
I think the criteria used has a lot to do with current name recognition and popularity. "Best" shouldn't be synonymous with popular. Cats? Wicked? Hairspray? Hey, I enjoyed them, but, in my opinion, these don't represent "best." But if popularity is a criteria, well then, there you go...
Merrily? Are you joking? Prior to the recent revival Merrily has always historically been considered one of the greatest musical bombs of all time. And yes, while the recent revival was absolutely breathtaking, in order to be considered among the best of all time, I imagine it would take a lot more than one extremely recent successful staging to meet that criteria.
@@hab77756 I saw it 5 times on Broadway, still can’t believe it’s gone 😭😭😭😭and the new production that goes on tour/the movie are just not the same for me

If this list says anything, it's that Stephen Sondheim is a legend and knew how to write a story and memorable music. He made a massive mark in the stage world that his music will forever live on.
No way Jose!!!!! By far the best musical ever preformed on stage is Le Mis!!! I concede a very respectable second to West Side. Some great shows not mentioned… Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar (for God’s sake 😂), Little Shop of Horrors, Josep and the Amazig… Man of La Macha)
It will blow you away if you ever get a chance to see a live production. I saw it in LA in the 90s with Ted Neeley (Jesus) and Carl Anderson (Judas) in the starring roles and Dennis DeYoung from Styx (Pontious Pilate). It was incredible. In 2015, my wife and I went to see a screening of the 1973 film with VIP passes that allowed us to sit and chat before the film with Ted, Barry Dennen (Pontious Pilate), and Kurt Yahjian (Annas. During the film, Ted sat between me and wife, constantly nudging us and telling us quick behind the scenes stuff about the film. It was a once in a lifetime moment and I was super emotional the whole time. I've been a fan since I was a little kid in the early 70s.
I was in the first UK National tour of "Jesus Christ Superstar" - fulfilling a deeply-felt childhood ambition! Exciting every night - never tired of it. I'm an old lady now, but that music still thrills me to my bones!
@@Shinybuddies that's awesome!! I am very jeaolous. I know Ted still does shows with an international cast of JCS occasionally. Even at 81 he still has the pipes to pull off the role of Jesus. It's inspiring to see the backstage videos of the whole cast standing behind the curtain every night to watch him sing Gethsemane with tears in their eyes.
Love most of the list, but you forgot the musical that started it all- Showboat. Without Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein writing the first show where the songs actually delved into character and forwarded the plot, we would not have any of the shows on the list.
First musical I ever saw was Lion King as a teen. It was amazing! Phantom of the Opera has me a vice grip. I have a favorite song from some musicals. Hamilton's "It's Quiet Uptown". West Side Story's "Somewhere" & "Memory" makes me cry. "Defying Gravity" from Wicked was something I felt in my heart.
The Wiz, Hello Dolly, South Pacific, Man of La Mancha, The King & I, West Side Story, Company, 42nd Street, Bye Bye Birdie, Will Rogers Follies, Beauty & the Beast, Promises Promises
Abso-freakin'-lutely Julie should have had the part, even if she did later get to thank Jack Warner for her Golden Globe in 'Mary Poppins'. They kept the other main characters.
Sound of music is my favorite movie. I saw it for the first time at nine years old and fell in love with it. I want my father/daughter dance to be to Edelweiss. My dads family is German American and my mom's family is Ukrainian and Polish she loves Fiddler on the roof I want to honor her by dancing to Sunrise Sunset. Needless to say I love broadway musicals. They have been a big part of my life and identity.
Little Shop of Horrors was okay on the big screen but Off Broadway was spectacular, if only for the ending which couldn’t be reproduced on the screen. The plant singing victoriously as cloth plant tentacles fell on the audience!!! Still gives me chills 😂
My favorite Broadway musicals of all time are: 1. The Phantom of the Opera 2. Les Miserables 3. Wicked 4. Hamilton 5. Into The Woods 9. Mean Girls I also love the Sound of Music, Moulin Rouge and Mamma Mia movie musicals but I haven’t ever payed much attention to their Broadway counterparts. I just love the movies so much that I’ve never been dying to see or listen to the Broadway versions. I have seen a live production of Wicked and Hamilton and I’ve listened to the soundtrack to all of those musicals MANY times and I’ve seen the movie versions of Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Into The Woods and Mean Girls (which obviously isn’t a musical) But just from listening to the soundtrack those are my favorite musicals
The lion king beauty and the beast wicked newsies and Aladdin and phantom of the opera and Hamilton and beetlejuice are my favorite Broadway musicals ❤
I'm really surprised Miss Saigon didn't make the list. There are others, but that one should have easily been in the top 20 in my opinion for Lea Salgona alone ...
I've performed in 4 of those in the list (sadly not on Broadway - I wish!!) and I have to pretty much agree with the list. I do think that both Hamilton and Rent should be in higher positions however, most likely #'s 2 & 3 respectively. Great list though! Thanks for the walk down memory lane ❤
Sweeney Todd is the greatest musical of all time without the slightest question. The magnificent original productions in New York and London, together with the countless amazing revivals in many forms, testify to its timelessness. It should have been number 1 on this list by a huge margin.
I don't know about "best," but as for influential, I do wonder: if it weren't for The Who's Tommy, would we have gotten the likes of Movin' Out, Mamma Mia, Rock of Ages, and all the assorted jukebox musicals?
Phantom, The Lion King and Hamilton are my favorites i've seen. I've seen Hamilton twice (Detroit in 2019 and Toronto in 2023, was s'posed to go in 2020 but COVID shot that down), saw Phantom in Toronto in 1999, my Phantom was Paul Stanley (yes, THAT one, he likes to Rock and Roll All Nite and party every day) and saw The Lion King in 2002 all in Toronto, Ontario

I’ve seen four Broadway shows - only one of them didn’t make this list: Mary Poppins (extremely reasonably). I’ve seen Lion King, Wicked, and Phantom. Phenomenal shows!! I saw Chicago + Moulin Rouge at an off-broadway touring show in Durham,NC and it was still great. One of my dance teachers was in the original cast of Hamilton on Broadway (you know… Ariana DeBose)
I agree with many. Les Mis #1…. And West side story indeed a solid #2! Groundbreaking story, and incredible music. The overature alone is a masterpiece. I had the pleasure of meeting Carol Lawrence ( original Maria). She told me that at the end of the show there was a very uncomfortably long silence…. Thinking the show was a flop… suddenly the audience jumped to their feet in rapturous applause.
I would for sure add Company. So many musicals of the 50s and 60s took place in "exotic" locations, so it was revolutionary to set one in the world of the same New Yorkers who might be in the audience. I'm also surprised Music Man didn't make the list.
Please! NYt said Carousel was the greatest musical of the 20th century and Sondheim said Oklahoma was about a picnic while Carousel was about life and death.
