Company, Guys and Dolls, The Music Man, Porgy and Bess, South Pacific, Candide, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George. Just a few of the artistically groundbreaking shows you might have included with some different criteria.
I think the criteria used has a lot to do with current name recognition and popularity. "Best" shouldn't be synonymous with popular. Cats? Wicked? Hairspray? Hey, I enjoyed them, but, in my opinion, these don't represent "best." But if popularity is a criteria, well then, there you go...
Merrily? Are you joking? Prior to the recent revival Merrily has always historically been considered one of the greatest musical bombs of all time. And yes, while the recent revival was absolutely breathtaking, in order to be considered among the best of all time, I imagine it would take a lot more than one extremely recent successful staging to meet that criteria.
phantom will always hold a special place in my heart, I remember seeing it in nyc before it close and my goodness it was amazing! I’m so blessed and I thank God that I had the opportunity to see it live!
I think Warner Bros. would've done a better job with the musical like they did with the Phantom of the Opera. I love the Phantom of the Opera film. That movie is so underrated when it came out in 2004.

It will blow you away if you ever get a chance to see a live production. I saw it in LA in the 90s with Ted Neeley (Jesus) and Carl Anderson (Judas) in the starring roles and Dennis DeYoung from Styx (Pontious Pilate). It was incredible. In 2015, my wife and I went to see a screening of the 1973 film with VIP passes that allowed us to sit and chat before the film with Ted, Barry Dennen (Pontious Pilate), and Kurt Yahjian (Annas. During the film, Ted sat between me and wife, constantly nudging us and telling us quick behind the scenes stuff about the film. It was a once in a lifetime moment and I was super emotional the whole time. I've been a fan since I was a little kid in the early 70s.
I was in the first UK National tour of "Jesus Christ Superstar" - fulfilling a deeply-felt childhood ambition! Exciting every night - never tired of it. I'm an old lady now, but that music still thrills me to my bones!
@@Shinybuddies that's awesome!! I am very jeaolous. I know Ted still does shows with an international cast of JCS occasionally. Even at 81 he still has the pipes to pull off the role of Jesus. It's inspiring to see the backstage videos of the whole cast standing behind the curtain every night to watch him sing Gethsemane with tears in their eyes.
Sorry to quibble. I enjoyed all of the musicals listed. BUT: West Side Story was not just Stephen Sondheim. Still at the start of his career, he only wrote the lyrics. The incredible music was written by the great Leonard Bernstein!
No way Jose!!!!! By far the best musical ever preformed on stage is Le Mis!!! I concede a very respectable second to West Side. Some great shows not mentioned… Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar (for God’s sake 😂), Little Shop of Horrors, Josep and the Amazig… Man of La Macha)
My favorite Broadway musicals of all time are: 1. The Phantom of the Opera 2. Les Miserables 3. Wicked 4. Hamilton 5. Into The Woods 9. Mean Girls I also love the Sound of Music, Moulin Rouge and Mamma Mia movie musicals but I haven’t ever payed much attention to their Broadway counterparts. I just love the movies so much that I’ve never been dying to see or listen to the Broadway versions. I have seen a live production of Wicked and Hamilton and I’ve listened to the soundtrack to all of those musicals MANY times and I’ve seen the movie versions of Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Into The Woods and Mean Girls (which obviously isn’t a musical) But just from listening to the soundtrack those are my favorite musicals
If this list says anything, it's that Stephen Sondheim is a legend and knew how to write a story and memorable music. He made a massive mark in the stage world that his music will forever live on.
First musical I ever saw was Lion King as a teen. It was amazing! Phantom of the Opera has me a vice grip. I have a favorite song from some musicals. Hamilton's "It's Quiet Uptown". West Side Story's "Somewhere" & "Memory" makes me cry. "Defying Gravity" from Wicked was something I felt in my heart.
The lion king beauty and the beast wicked newsies and Aladdin and phantom of the opera and Hamilton and beetlejuice are my favorite Broadway musicals ❤
I certainly would put Hamilton higher on the list, and Chicago lower. My first Broadway show was The Sound of Music with Mary Martin. I saw Phantom with Michael Crawford and it's at the top of my list too.
Love most of the list, but you forgot the musical that started it all- Showboat. Without Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein writing the first show where the songs actually delved into character and forwarded the plot, we would not have any of the shows on the list.
Sound of music is my favorite movie. I saw it for the first time at nine years old and fell in love with it. I want my father/daughter dance to be to Edelweiss. My dads family is German American and my mom's family is Ukrainian and Polish she loves Fiddler on the roof I want to honor her by dancing to Sunrise Sunset. Needless to say I love broadway musicals. They have been a big part of my life and identity.
I don't know about "best," but as for influential, I do wonder: if it weren't for The Who's Tommy, would we have gotten the likes of Movin' Out, Mamma Mia, Rock of Ages, and all the assorted jukebox musicals?

When it comes to these types of lists, they represent someone's opinion. There is no right or wrong, so this list represents a fair assessment, though for me, I'd change at least half the list. With that said, as we entered the 21st century, Time magazine did a best list of the 20th century of movies, books, etc. For best Broadway musical, they picked Carousel. In my opinion, it really deserves, at the very least, an honorable mention.
No. My top 5 are 1. Les Miz, 2. Lion King, 3. Phantom, 4. My Fair Lady, Chicago. I have seen all of these plays in London, Toronto, New York, Chicago, Nashville, Memphis, and several others. Actually, I think this is a 5 way tie. But Les Miz completely overwhelms me.
