sandfaydontplay if the shadow is on the wall, distance yourself from the wall. Keep moving away from it until the shadow is gone. OR get a work light or two and put them low behind you shooting up at the wall to get rid of the shadows. I’m a good 8 feet away from the wall you see behind me AND I have a light behind me lighting the wall up. What you have is fine, you just have to learn how to adjust them.

Great video Dee. I've been using the Pop Voice lav mic for just under a year. Works like a charm and it's only $12. Great for beginners.
EL JEFE REVIEWS Hey Boss! Sometimes the inexpensive lavs are really good.
Dee Nimmin Got lucky. I'm upgrading my audio now. XLR mic, Audio Interface, and learning basic audio editing. Nick's video made me want better audio since I can't afford better video.
I just went over and listened to your last video, your voice sounds pretty good.
Thanks for checking out my video! I appreciate your feedback. Keep crushing it Dee!
Dee, just watched your first three videos. Great stuff. This year I've decided to really make an effort with UA-cam, and you'll be one of the creators helping me along. I'm a full time Airstreamer (I live in an Airstream....aka trailer trash) so all of my UA-cam work is done with mobile tech. I can sit in the desert running on solar in my Airstream and share videos, or I can be hooked up in a park with full Wi-Fi. When I'm doing outdoor video I use a Lav mic with my iPhone, and I favor Voice Record Pro, so glad to know it's one of your recommended apps! Thanks for starting this channel and I'll look forward to getting some more mobile ideas from you!
Rich Charpentier That’s pretty cool actually. I’d like to see what you’re making once you’re up and running.
Dee, I'm up and running. My UA-cam Channel has been around for years but nothing was consistently posted. Over the years I collected random subscribers so I actually have over 1000 subscribers randomly. This year I decided to make a concerted effort on UA-cam. Covering full time living and working from an RV, running my business, travel, and mobile tech for RV'ers. Still need to zero in on my audience as the bulk of RVers are retirement age, but I'm interested in expanding on working from the road. I'm a "young" RV'er, and there are more and more mobile workers out there, so trying to cover topics for them. Still learning the ins and outs of UA-cam, and I follow along with Nick and TubeBuddy as well (found both last month). Thanks again for your new series, really good so far!
Welcome to youtube man. Will be following this channel
Juan Mera Figueroa Thank you, Juan. 😊
Thank you for the tips Dee. I have a microphone that a rarely use with my camera and I'm hadn't thought about the possibility of using it with my phone until I watched your other video and had a lightbulb moment.
Just make sure the plug is the right one, I cover that near the end of this video.
I'll have to check it out tomorrow and see if it fits.
It can't be any worse than my first attempt to use it with my camera last week. I spent an entire day filming without realizing that apparently I'd failed to get it to actually turn on so everything was silent.
LOL, I won't be making that mistake twice.

UNIQUE IDEA Thank you so much. I’m happy to help.
can u do a video about taking videos on mobile camera which didn't have high quality video ..pls do a video
And how to do a channel banner template
Gotta say, it takes me forever to edit on my iphone using iMovie. When i split music and audio clips they jump all over the place and it is sucha pain to drag and drop them trying to get them where they need to be. I have to drag them with my finger over and over and often it takes many attempts to get a single clip in place.
It’s so convenient shooting with your phone and all but Im leaning to getting a camera soon. I remember editing in the computer (which i did until my camera broke a couple years ago) being a bit faster than this.
Mother Muse I still prefer editing video on my desktop, even if the footage is from my phone, for the exact reason you say. I have large fingers and it’s difficult to make the cuts and move things around on the phone editors. However, the more I do it the better I get. But I’m 100x faster on my desktop when it comes to actual video editing.
Dee Nimmin is it a stupid question to ask how you get the footage from your phone to computer? I am having difficulty with iIcloud for some reason?
No such thing as a stupid question. I plug mine into the computer via USB and transfer the data. If you have an Apple computer you can use Air Drop. For me, I find the cable is the quickest and I bought an extra one that stays plugged in so I always have it there.
i've had the same problem with audio when i'm editing where things will be off. i have even had this problem when not detaching the sound files. or when i decide to download it to my phone after i am happy, i have to go back and redo it because certain parts will be soundless. my friend has imovie on his computer and he can edit so much easier than i can on my iphone. but it is getting a little easier with each video.
Dee Nimmin thanks guys!
This is great I bought a Boya BY-MM1 and was looking at a Boya BY-M1 and you just made my decision thank you.

Great video Dee! I didn’t imagine your content would be so on point. I shoot with IPhone and edit with adobe- so this was 1000% helpful. (Little basic, but I am looking forward to those app / settings tutorials.
Jeff Lotter, Esq. Thanks for the kind words, Jeff, I appreciate it. Tutorials on the way!
I just read that over again and it sounds like a back handed compliment. I thought you were teaching editing on a phone - I have zero desire to do that - everything else about the Iphone and recording i am ready to learn. Specifically settings and what support gear. ALSO please point out when / if we're missing out on something because we don;t have a full camera. (that's going to help me decide when it's time to get serious about upgrading). Sorry for the back-handed compliment.
Jeff Lotter, Esq. Things I would look into if you’re going to shoot a lot with your phone. 1) A solid tripod 2) Some sort of microphone 3) Filmic Pro app (or something that gives you full manual control).
That said, what type of content are you shooting? That would help me suggest things you may need.

Hello Weird Heather! I'm happy to hear Nick sent ya over and thank you for the warm welcome and for watching! I hope to see you around.
Another great video Dee, I thought the two Lav Mic's sounded really good, both the Boya and Rode. but that could be because my earing is not the best anyways. Thanks again Dee, Have a great week.
Flash In Your Pan They are both pretty good. I’m just surprised at how well the Boya sounds considering how inexpensive it is.
Just getting into recording for a new Kickstarter campaign - Thanks for this great video! I like your no-nonsense editing style :D I thought the BOYA sounded better indoors and outdoors.
Great video thank you
I am enjoying this series. I only use my iPhone 8 to shoot and edit all my videos and I have almost 600 videos on my channel. I would like a tutorial on the settings for an external mic. I currently use Zoom iQ5 and windscreen. Do you know the Zoom mics? Is the Rode SmartLav mic better than the Zoom ones? Thanks 🙏🏻
Lou Arnold - UA-camr Cristã Hi Lou, I have a Zoom H4 and H5 but I haven’t experimented with your mic yet.
I wouldn’t say one is better than the other, the smart lav+ and zoom are just different and used in different situations.
Are you happy with the sound it gives you? If not, what’s the problem you’re having?
My Zoom external recorders are sensitive and pick up a lot of surrounding noise so I’m not sure I’d use them for my voice unless it was very close to my mouth and I could turn down the gain. You should also be able to adjust the width of the signal it picks up to 90 degrees instead of 120, which will pick up more surrounding noise.
Zoom makes solid product, you might just have to play with it a bit more to make it work for you. If I see one here I’ll pick one up and do a video about it.
Dee Nimmin Hi Dee, thanks so much for replying. Yes, I use 90 degrees and have my mic gain on 5. But I have the other switch set to ‘limit’ instead of ‘auto gain’. I can’t actually hear any difference between the two. Do you know what the difference is?
When I edit, I turn the sound up on iMovie and LumaFusion.
I don’t really have a problem with my zoom mic, I just want to get better quality sound on my vids and I’m prepared to spend money on it. I thought maybe the smartLav was an improvement as it’s newer than my old zoom! Thanks again
Just downloaded the voice record pro,it really helped me getting a better audio
That was great, and your lighting is also good.waiting for nxt one

Mr bonezyp Good to hear, thanks!
Awesome video love this.
Thanks man!
Hi Dee, Awesome video! Is there anything you would suggest that is wireless? Or good for multiple people in the video? Currently we are using a separate device to record the audio and then merging the files (pain) but it works.
The RodeLink Filmmaker Kit. It's not cheap, but it's wireless and sounds great. Boya might make the same thing at a cheaper price, you'll have to look at see. I'm not up to speed on Boya's full line up but they seem to copy Rode when it comes to product releases. I have a review coming of the RodeLink Filmmaker Kit fairly soon, so you can see it there and judge for yourself.
Mr Dee! U making UA-cam easier for us mobile tubers, thanks for this great video🇺🇬👍
Thanks! 👊🏻
I like Voice record pro also. My favorite budget mic is the MOVO VXR10 and the videomicro from Rode. A lavaliere mic is normally my last choice when I choose a microphone. If you are going to wear a ball cap one of the bast places to put the mic is under the brim of the hat near the end. That way you wont get the clothing noise or inconsistent sound when you turn your head.
DIYCameraGuy The true value of a video is usually found in the comments. That is a FANTASTIC tip putting the mic on the rim of the hat!!!! Never heard of that. Thank you. 👍
I have been recording sound for films since the 90's. I may have learned a few tricks over the years. I totally agree about the comment being the most valuable part of videos. There is so much great knowledge out there and I love when people share it.
Hey, thanks for the test. How do you see the difference between a mid-range smartphone (e.g. Oppo A91) and a simple field recorder (e.g. Tascam DR-05X) ? Would the sound quality with the smartphone+ external micro be sufficient for relatively high resolution /difficult sound material like rain sounds, wind, etc. which doesn't just sound like frying fat in a pan ;-) ?
This was very helpful, thanks
You're welcome.
Dee Nimmin can you do a video about mobile editing software, right now I use Viva Video but if there's a better option is love to know
What would you suggest for an app that records true sound. Meaning everything I can hear, the phone records as well. I have tried tons of apps but they are all the same. When trying to record a background noise all the apps filter out the noise I am trying to record like say for eg, the sound of knocking in an engine or rain and thunder in the distance. the phone auto cancels them sounds out. I want to record everything I can hear.
Great video thank you. Is there an update for 2020 on microphones? Or would you still suggest the Rode Lava mic?
Yes, there’s an update coming. I have tested some new mics. However, for the lav mic the Boya BYM1 is still the best budget mic. There is a new company called Deity that makes a good sounding lav. And the Rode is still solid. Only one addition for the lav mics.
Dee Nimmin ahh ok I’m going to get the Rode or deity then. We’ll see what they say in the store. The Boya altho sounded great to me, had a slight bit more treble in its sound than the Rode. I prefer for my speaking voice not to have my high frequencies too high as I have a bit of a high pitch voice. Rode will balance the highs better I think. Thanks so much for this video it was crazy helpful. Off to the music store I go.
very well. thank👌👍👍

Awesome video! Really enjoying your content. I use the Rode SmartLav with my iPhone 6S Plus. The Boya sounds great and seems like an affordable option. 👍of course 😀
USNERDOC Hey hey! All of your vids are with the smart lav?
Dee pretty much all of my vids are with the Rode SmartLav unless I make the mistake of quickly trying to record some content without reaching in my bag for the Rode. I have a Rode SmartLav and extension cable with me pretty much all the time
